Why Can't I use an Apple Gift card to buy an ipad!?!

So, I received an apple gift card for graduation from college. It was $500 and I wanted to use to buy an iPad.
The person at the apple store said I was not allowed to use a gift card to pay for more than %50 of an iPad.
My question is...WHY? They got their money when someone purchased the gift card, what does it matter?
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or knows why this is apple's policy. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

That is a very, very big assumption.
Apple could simply check the gift card and see if the purchase of that card was valid. They would have to Do that anyway to verify the amount on it anyway.
Not wanting to pony up the cash could be a sign of naughtiness.

Unfortunatly, no. This is becuase in order to prevent fraud and people from buying more than 2 iPhones per customer, they require credit card or debit card, which has customer information by credit card companies. Apple store gift cards, on the other hand, has no customer information in the card, which is essentially the same thing as paying with cash.
However, credit or debit card policy is in effect for first couple of days, and after the demand dies down, Apple will let you buy iPhone with cash or gift cards, as long as you set up your iCloud account in store (if purchasing iPhone at full price) or setting up your celluar service.
If, however, you have no credit or debit card with you, then Apple might be willing to grant you a special exception, however, this is only avalible at the Apple Retail Store.

I've looked online for an answer, but only found other people asking the same question:
Why can Canadian Apple Store gift cards not be used online? They have to be used in a brick & mortar store. This seems very strange to me. Even stranger is the fact that no one seems to have a reason as to why!

Sorry, but we're all just fellow users here and have no insight into Apple policies. All we could do is guess, and speculation, particularly about Apple policies, isn't allowed in the Communities. (I actually don't see anything in the Apple Store for Canada that offers gift cards at all other than for the iTunes Store, but that might have been a holiday thing).

My daughter (under 13 years of age) just redeemed her iTunes gift card she got for christmas, but there is seems to be no way she can pay with this in App Store. Can this be true? App Store says that her credit is 15 $ but my credit card is used for payments all the time...
And yes, we use Family Sharing - and yes my credit card works. But it is just no good that my credit card is being used when she has credit of her own (it was actually the point of giving her the gift card...).
