Using an Extended Airport Express

Suppose I have a newer Airport Express which has been successfully extended from an Airport Extreme via Wi-Fi.
Which features of the Airport Express ( Wi-Fi, USB, Ethernet, Audio Out) can be used simultaneously-- Or is it one feature at a time?
For example, can I both extend my Wi-Fi range with the AE and connect an Ethernet cable from the AE to another device?

I would like to ask a question.
So I could use the following setup?
Cable modem (wired to) Airport Extreme <--wireless--> Airport Express (wired/ethernet to) Slingbox.
The Slingbox will be able to connect to the internet via an Airport Express communicating wirelessly with the Airport Extreme that is connected to the internet.
Basically, to use the Airport Express as a wireless adaptor to provide internet for the Slingbox. Is that possible?

Help? I keep getting "Unexpected Error" everytime I try to use my new Airport Express to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule.

I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error. Try again". The Express is still flashing Amber. I cannot get it to turn green. What am I doing wrong here? Please help me.

Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
Power off and restart the Time Capsule
Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible.
Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend.

Can I use an old Airport Express to extend the range of a new Airport Express?

Hi all. I have an old Airport Express 802.11g (First Gen?) that is starting to fade. Still works, but not what it used to be. So I am going to buy a new Airport Express. I'm not interested in the Airport Extreme.
Question: If I use the new Airport Express as my main wireless router, can I plug my old Airport Express into another room as an extender? In other words, with the old Express and the new Express talk to each other or will a new Express only allow extension with another new Express?

Sorry, but the old AirPort Express 802.11 b/g does not have a setting to "Extend a wireless network", so it cannot be used as a extender with the newer AirPort Express if you plan to connect wirelessly.
If you plan to connect the older Express using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then it could be configured to provide additional wireless signal coverage in that manner.

My two airport express base stations are 802.11n and i am triying to use them extend my wireless network which is using a D link wirless router as supplied my my ISP connected to TalkTalk network.
Unless the D-Link wireless router has Ethernet ports for each of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) to connect to, they will NOT be able to extend the wireless range of the D-Link.
Instead, when directly connected and reconfigured for a roaming network, these base stations CAN extend the range.

The key is to have both AXns configured as follows:
As a bridge.
Each having a unique Base Station Name.
Both using the same Network Name (or SSID), wireless security type and password as the D-Link.
Each AXn to use a channel at least 3-5 channels apart both from each other and that of the D-Link.

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

I have an Airport Express that's working flawlessly as a wireless router via a cable modem. Problem is, I have a second computer ( a desktop PC) that's too far away from the cable modem to hook it up via the ethernet. Is it possible to use a second Airport Express to extend the wireless network and thereby connect to my desktop with the ethernet cord? I guess this would be kind of using the AE backwards. If this is possible, could you please tell me how I might do it?

Here are the basic steps in setting up a WDS:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs (not the Ethernet ID) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID and is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.
I suggest that you also perform a "factory default" reset on each of your AXs to get them to their original "out-of-the-box" configuration.
Finally, for this WDS, AX#1 (the AX connected to the Internet modem) will be the main base station, and AX#2 will be the remote base station.)
Main Base Station Setup - AX#1
o On your MacBook Pro (MBP) click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by AX#1.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the /Applications/Utilities folder).
o Select AX#1, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then, choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS, and then, choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox.
o Click the Add "+" button, and then, enter the AirPort ID of AX#2.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AX#2
o On the MBP click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar, and then, choose the wireless network created by AX#2.
o Open AirPort Utility if not already running.
o Select AX#2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS, and then, choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of AX#1.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

IPod Touch not picked up extending Airport Express

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and two Airport Expresses that are both used to extend my Wi-fi. My problem is that my iPod Touch 3 - running IOS 4.1 - fails to pick up one of the extending Airport Expresses. My laptop and an iMac pick it up just fine, but I get no connection from my iPod when I am very close to that Express. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated??

You need to begin by configuring the AEX to Join an existing network (Bridge Mode.) You can then connect to it using Wi-Fi, but the AEX will not extend your existing network.
If you can connect the AEX to your existing router using Ethernet, then you could use it to Create a new network. Otherwise, if you want to extend your existing network you will need to get a Wireless Access Point - WAP - from a non-Apple product like D-Link.

Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.

I have an Airport Express unit connected to my amplifier and my modem in order to listen to music wirelessly. I would like to use my Cannon ip4300 printer the same way. Can I use a second Airport Express unit to connect the printer to my modem? If so, how is it done? I am concerned about a conflict between the two Airport Express units. Thank you.

I do just this with a ip4200 printer - you "extend" the Airport network with the second Airport then plug the printer into the USB port, (you could plug it into the USB port of the first Airport as well)
In the Airport utility (use 5.6 or 5.6.1) select the Printers tab and it should be there.

AirPort Express - Can not connect to "extended" AirPort Express

Two trips to the Genius Bar tell me that I should be able to Extend my network from a new AirPort Express (n/g/b) to an older AirPort Express (b/g) using the "extend network feature". The two devices are communicating (both lights are green and the wireless channel will change on the remote device if I change it at the base station), but my MBP Core Duo 15" seems to only be connecting to the AirPort Express Base Station (n/g/b) and not to the Remote "extended" AirPort Express (b/g).
This forum seems to indicate that you can only use WDS between the newer AEX (n) and the older AEX (b/g) but the folks at the Apple Store have told me twice now not to use WDS. They said that as long as the two devices have green lights that it is working, but when I click on the Airport Symbol up in the menu bar w/the Option key it tells me the MAC address of the base station only - and when I get very far from the base station, the signal drops out even though the remote AEX is near by.
I did try setting it up using WDS and that works fine, just very slow.
Anyone know if there's a way to be sure that my MBP connects to the remote (extended) AirPort Express?

This is correct....since the older b/g Express does not even have a setting to "extend a wireless network".
If you require confirmation, open AirPort Utility, select the b/g Express, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Now look at the available settings for Wireless Mode.
"Extend a wireless network" is not there.
but the folks at the Apple Store have told me twice now not to use WDS.
They are likely telling you not to use it because the performance on your network will drop dramatically if you do use WDS. Or, they mean well, but they are just wrong on this subject. Here's why:
The only way that you can use an older "g" and newer "n" device together to provide more wireless coverage is to configure both devices for WDS. It's a Catch 22.
WDS operates only at "g" wireless levels. So when you configure the newer "n" Express to operate as part of the WDS (which you must), it becomes a "g" wireless device. You lose any "n" capability on the network
Worse still, every "remote" or "relay" in a WDS setup cuts the bandwidth of the entire network in half...50%. That's huge. In effect, with WDS, you may have a bit more wireless coverage, but you will have a "g" wireless network that operates at half speed.

Your only option, (unless you add more hardware):
Configure both AX devices to "Participate in a WDS network" setting one up as a "main" and the other a "remote" . The big downside, as mentioned previously, is that you will have a "g" wireless network running at half speed.

Problem trying to extend airport express network

I added brand new airport express to my network, Set it up to be my primary base station, clicked to create an extended network, and now my computer can't see the airport express. How do I get my computer to see the airport express again? I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, I've tried a soft reset , and I've tried a hard reset (Which I can't seem to do because it requires AirPort Utility to be able to see it so I can click the correct option, If I'm understanding the directions correctly). The message I get is "No configured Airport base stations have been found. AirPort Utility will continue searching." I am running OS 10.8.4--but I see that none of my devices with Airport Utility can see the airport express.

Thanks for the reply Bob! OK--I'll never understand what the heck just happened. All is working again, but through no logical sense that I can make out. Here it is in a nutshell: Yes, I have two airport expresses, the brand spanking new one and an older gen. 1 version. I thought I'd try to make the new airport express the primary basestation and use the older airport express as my extended basestation (just seemed easier to move the older one to any socket in the house without any extra wires involved). When that didn't work and my computers suddenly wouldn't acknowledge the very existence of the new airport express, I reversed the configuration. After having my old airport express also go AWOL, I was ready to heave it all out the window, but miraculously, my old airport express suddenly popped up in my list of wi-fi networks I could join (even though it still didn't show in the Airport Utility). I clicked to join, and suddenly the Airport Utility saw it again and allowed me to create a new network from scratch--though for some reason it only wanted to connect using PPPoE. I couldn't get the option for DHCP, until I plugged my new airport express back in and then voila, not only did my computer finally recognize the new airport, but I had the option to change my setting back to DHCP. Once I did that, everything worked--not in the configuration I had hoped, but I'm not going to mess with success.

In theory, you might expect better performance. Apple added two additional antennas and moved them up to the top of the "tower" in the "new" Extreme.
But my "new" Extreme really performs about the same as the previous version Extreme. It might be a bit better range wise, but nothing significant here. If you are looking for really noticeable improvement, you will likely be disappointed.

Yes, it can, but in order to do this effectively, it must be located where it can receive a strong signal to be able to extend it. In this regard, the device can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives.
You lose a portion of the network speed with each device that you use to extend wirelessly, so adding another device to extend wirelessly may not help at all. It would be much better if you could connect the "new" Extreme and "old" Extreme together using a wired Ethernet cable.....since there is no signal loss that way.

You should be able to setup WPA / WPA2 access, rather than WEP - which is old an less secure. (Unless your devices are too old for WPA??)
