Using an external Blue Ray Disc Drive/Burner with an imac?  Can I?  Brand?

I have a blue ray player in the living room and I'm just starting to research burning blue ray discs using the imac.
I have an intel based imac, 2.8ghs intel core 2 duo, 4gb sdram, 1tb hard drive.
Should I be able to safely use an external blue ray burner?
If so, recommendations as to a product?

there is no official support for blue ray drives in leopard. Steve jobs said blue ray is "a bag of hurt" referring to the licensing issues for blue ray.
As a result there is no recommended drives as they are not officially supported.
I can't recommend either as I don't use Blue ray yet.
A quick google brought up this
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/25/blu-ray-arrives-for-the-mac-wheres-hd-dvd/
Judging by your list of gadgets below your post, it won't be much good as it is for the Mac Pro
All I can say is that Snow Leopard may bring better support for Blue Ray, all you can do is hope!

  • My iMac Keeps on try to boot on my external Blu-ray disk drive

My iMac Keeps on try to boot on my external Blu-ray disk drive and not the hard drive. Therefore when I turn it on, it boots up and then it go pass the sound and the apple logo come up on screen but then it frezzes and noing happens; even if I hold down the power button.
    System Software Overview:
    Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
    Boot Mode: Normal
It should not boot off the Blu-ray read/wrigt.
    iMac from 2013 Q1
Blu-ray is LG read/wrigt for Blu-rays, HD DVDs, DVDs and CDs pluged in by USB

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those 3rd-party items that Roger pointed out, one at a time, and restart. Continue until you determine which ones are causing the problem. If KP while in safe mode, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • External Blue Ray Disk Drive and T61, Or is one available for the Ultra Bay yet?

    Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone has a Blue Ray Disk Drive connected to there T61? Can the T61 handle a Blue Ray Disk Drive? The reason I am asking is because I was thinking of getting one for my T61 and then playing Blue Ray movies thru my LCD TV, the LCD TV being monitor #2. Would the quality be as good as a normal Blue Ray player that is hooked to the TV? My graphics card is Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M. Thank you for in advance for any advice on this.
    Cheers,

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • Instructions: Create Blu-Ray disc in Compressor with Final Cut TImeline

I searched mightily for simple instructions on how to do this. The Compressor help files are woefully inadequate in providing a simple walkthrough to do this. Burning a Blu-ray directly from Final Cut does not allow one to optimize the conversion like compressor does. So:
    1) Right click your chosen sequence in Final Cut
    2) Click "Share" The Share dialog box will come up.
    3) Choose "Blu-Ray" in the destination drop down in the top-left corner of the Share window (don't forget to choose the destination location of the files at the top of the dialog)
    4) Click "Send to Compressor" in the bottom-left corner
Compressor will open and a job will automatically be created with Blu-ray video
and Dolby ac3 audio. Set options and submit as usual in Compressor

The send to compressor option occasionally creates problems. Most people would recommend exporting as a self-contained movie, then bringing that into compressor and using your workflow from there.

  • Is there any Blu-ray Player Software compatible with my iMac OS X Mountain Lion?

I want to watch a Blu-ray Movie on my iMac(OS X Mountain Lion), so I need a best Blu-ray Player Software.

You need third party software, Macgo Blu-ray Player can deal with the work you mentioned. As for the Mac Moutain Lion(10.8), I check their website and it is said that the Mac OS 10.8 are supported.
Refers to their product page: http://www.macblurayplayer.com/features.htm

  • What Blu-Ray Burners are compatible with Mac?

Any suggestions on what type of external blu-ray players are compatible with the iMacs?

Same Samsung SH-B123L Blu-Ray player has worked for me in Windows 7, Lion, and Mountain Lion. So, if you had this connected and dual-booted using Boot Camp, it would be a one device solution. Use MacGo Blu-Ray software. The player is a powered USB connection. OS X DVD player also thinks it is an internal Apple device and just works without a whimper. Fast device. 16x DVD burn. 48x read. Take it out of the box and plug it in. The operating system just recognizes it.
If you point the MacGo Blu-ray software at movies stored in your local network, it will play them too.

  • If there ever was a NEW update for iMovie, will iMovie have the ability to burn projects onto a Blu-Ray disc so that customers don't have to pay for additional software like Final Cut Pro or Roxio Toast Titanium/Pro?

It would be helpful for those who are familier with iMovie to use Blu-Ray discs for burning and playing back their iMovie projects in HD. However, iMovie '11 doesn't have that special feature yet. I hear that 'Final Cut Pro X,' 'Roxio Toast 11 Titanium' and 'Roxio Toast 11 Pro' can copy projects like iMovie onto Blu-Ray, but it would take long periods of time to do that. Professional software, like FCP X and Toast, can be pricey.
I'm hoping that iMovie '11 will burn projects onto Blu-Ray, but will that ever come true?

Will iBlu-Ray be an upgrade? OR and update of iDVD?
If it's an upgrade, then that means you'd still pay for it from the Mac App Store. I wish it would only cost between $20-40.
If it's a free update of iDVD, but with the new name, that would be better than to go out and pay for things!!!
However, external Blu-ray recorders would still be required if you were going to burn an iMovie project onto a blu-ray disc.
Is there a way to put in a request for 'iBlu-Ray?'

  • How do you get Chapter Markers to work when burning a Blu-ray Disc in FCP7?

I created my first-ever Blu-ray disc yesterday, using FCP7. My edited video was 95 minutes long -- it took 10 hours to encode and burn the disc, using an external Blu-ray burner.
The Blu-ray disc looks and sounds great -- but my 21 chapter markers are nowhere to be found. When I play back the disc in my standalone Blu-ray player, clicking "next" on the remote simply advances the video in 30-second increments (instead of taking me to the chapter markers I'd carefully created in FCP -- because this was a music concert performance, the markers are important and I need them to work.)
    Somebody please help ...

    Hi Larry,
just to clarify in the 'edit markers' dialogue box you have clicked 'Add Chapter Marker' button and this has added the text '<CHAPTER>' to the 'comment' box.
as in the 5th picture on this tutorial

  • Can I re burn a rewritable blue ray disc that has been burnt on?

I am using FCP X and using a panasonic blue ray burner to burn my products. When I use Verbatim Rewritable Blue Ray discs, the first time used....no problem with a great result. When I try to reuse same disc, mac does not recognize burnt disc so does not ask me to reformat disc so it can be reburnt. Is their a way around this? I also have Compressor 4 running if this helps? Thanks

    I'm using a Pioneer BDR-206D.
    Firmware version: 1.56
I have burned and re-burned Verbatim BD-RE 25 GB 2X discs. Although I think all the times I used these discs was in FCP X for viewing/testing. I don't think I tried them with Compressor.
I have burned BD-R 6X discs with FCP X, Compressor, Encore and Toast with no issues. While Encore burned 6X BD-R discs at 2X, Toast burned the 6X discs at 6X.
The only issue I ran into with this drive was with some Lightscribe discs. Which at the time I didn't even realize they were Lightscribe. The Pioneer drive would not even recognize these disc. They were DVD I believe.
I simple installed the Pioneer drive and used it.
    I'm running Lion 10.7.2.

  • Does the USB apple SuperDrive allow to burn blu ray disc?

Apple USB SuperDrive support blu ray disc?

No. You have to have an external Blu-ray recorder to burn Blu-ray discs.
OWC have quite a few of them.

  • Once and for all: Can DVD SP build Blu-Ray disc content or not?

    Maybe I’m crazy, but…
Everything I’ve heard to date has Apple backing the Blu-Ray format. Believing this, I just spent $900 on a new Lacie D2 external Blu-Ray burner (which IS Mac compatible). I also purchased Toast 8 (which IS Blu-Ray compatible).
All I need to do now is build my disc content (assign H.264 1920x1080 content, build menus, etc.) then drop it all into Toast and burn Blu-Ray video discs… right?
So what is all this I’m reading here about DVD Studio Pro supporting the HD DVD format and not Blu-Ray???!!!!!!
Am I going to be able to do this using DVD SP or not, and if not, can anybody tell me a program I can use to build my Blue-Ray disc content? (All of my HD content is H.264 (1920x1080) rendered directly from Adobe After Effects).
My deadline for this project is fast approaching and I’m hoping somebody can shed some light on this. If I can build Blu-Ray discs and burn them on my Mac using Toast 8 and the Lacie D2, I’ll make my deadline and justify the $900 spent thus far.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks, SM

    Wait a minute,
Maybe I don’t need to buy PC to run DVDit Pro HD. I have a Mac Pro! With Boot camp I have a PC! Any reason I shouldn’t try running DVDit on my Mac via the Boot Camp beta? That way I'd also be using my Lacie D2 Bu-Ray drive. And with Roxio's 30 day return policy I haven’t much to loose...
I'm calling Roxio tech support. Let you know how it goes

    A LITTLE LATER:
Just got back from digging into Roxio's discussion forum and here's what I found:
I have travelled down the same frustrating path my friend!
But I did succeed doing it all on my new mac Pro, finally...
Install BOOTCAMP (free beta). Install WINDOWS XP ($269 from AMAZON). Install ULEAD BD RECORDER, which comes with DVD MOVIEFACTORY 6 (free trial, $80 to buy).
BDAV worked well from SONY V1-U burning to MATSHITA BD-MLT SW-5582 and played perfectly in new SAMSUNG 1200 palyer on my 57" DLP.
TIP - install BOOTCAMP et al on its own HD, and use NTFS... This will come in handy when doing a BDAV from a file such as HDV1080 that is larger than 4GB.
To do BDMV, you'll need SONIC DVD-IT PRO HD ($499) which I have yet to try...
Frustrating process, but kinda cool to figure it all out, especially when NOBODY in sales at any of these places seems to have a clue.
So there you go - must be possible

  • Blu-ray discs don't seems to write a 'lead-out'. Help!

    Hi,
I am using Premiere Pro CS4 with Encore CS4. Up until now I have always used DVD's and not blu-ray discs and have never had a problem. I now film in full HD and would like to be able to build blu-ray discs in Encore.
I import to Encore through dynamic link, and set my blu-ray project to PAL 1980x1080, 25fps - the same as my original footage and premiere sequence. The disc appears to burn ok, and you can see there is data on the disc. However, the disc is rejected by my sony blu-ray player, and both the blu-ray disc drives in my PC. It keeps telling me that the format is unsupported. I have tried lowering too 1440 and even 720 and it makes no difference at all. I made sure the region was correct too - region 2 (as i'm in the UK).
I have tried importing very short sequences so that I can watch the process, and I have noticed that unlike my DVD discs, the blu-ray doesn't seem to write a 'lead-out). It says it's complete but it's almost as if it doesn't finialise the disc for playback.
I am so confused, and at this stage rather frustrated! Has anyone got any pointers as to what may being going wrong here?
    Thanks,
    Cath

Have you applied the special update?

Can you suggest a good external blue ray player drive that is compatable with Macbook Pro and avaiilable in the United States?

Define compatible. Actually, define what exactly you want to do. Play back a Bluray on the display of the Macbook Pro? Not possible. Or do you just want to record things onto a Bluray disc?
