Using an external display with the macbook air

hi, i wanna know if i can use an external display with the macbook air as the tunderbolt is a bit pricey? i was thinking about buyin a LCD moniter wih a VGA port. many thanks

Yes.  You can use VGA DVI or HDMI monitors by buying a  Minidisplay port to xxx adapter and the the appropriate cable (vga, dvi or hdmi).
The MiniDisplayport adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.

Here's a sample HDMI adapter.  All these available in the Apple online store.

I am using my big flat screen as an external display with my 2009 13" macbook.  I want to be able to close the macbook.  But when I do, the external display goes off.  is there a way to configure my macbook so that the external monitor doesn't turn off.

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Can you use any external display with a macbook?

    hi all,
I was just wondering, can you use any external display with a macbook? (i.e. gateway, and dell displays?)

    To original poster:
    Yes.
Provided you have the appropriate ports and cables, that is. Some monitors do not have all vga, dvi-i, dvi-d, hdmi, etc. ports, and it can be misleading that all those technologies appear to be compatible via conversion cables (they aren't all meant to be compatible, so look it up on the internet before buying).
    Cheers,

  • Will using a 30" display harm the MacBook Air?

I know it will not run it at it's 2560x1600 resolution, but will it do the MacBook Air any harm to have it connected to a 30" display and set the settings to mirror? I have tested this and know it works and the picture quality on my 30" is fine for the intended use.
(I am looking to use this set up as a looping iPhoto slideshow at wedding receptions.)
    Thank You.

I had mine running on a friends 52" LCD TV, using the DVI connector. It worked fine, and we were impressed with the results.

How are you connecting your MBP to the Sony TV?
Which model MBP do you have?

I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.

I would like to darken my Mac Air screen, so I can use may external display and the keyboard on the notebook--it is possible on a PC-does it work on a Mac?

    Sure it's possible.
Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo on the top left of the menu).
Choose "Display".  There's a slider bar for the screen brightness.  Adjust it and you're all set.

do you have to have a wirelss router with the macbook air if you do not have internet in your home

If you do not have internet at home - MacBook Air works perfectly fine offline.
It is advisable to connect it to the internet ocasionally to update it.

  • How do I use my Studio Display with my macbook while closed?

Just wondering if its possible to use my stuidio dispaly and an external keyboard & mouse while my macbook is closed, and if so how do I do that?

In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the monitor and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131  When you disconnect from the monitor your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
