Using an external editor (e.g., photoshop) with photos for mac

Hi,
I'm just trying out photos for mac. So far it seems to make life a lot easier in terms of syncing libraries. However, I have been using Lightroom 4 and photoshop before and I am missing out on some of their combined functionality (not much I have to confess). What I want to know is this - is there an easy way to open files with an external editor e.g., photoshop so I can use it (photoshop) to stitch together panoramas or merge HDRs?
I'm surprised this functionality isn't included in photos from the beginning. I can see there is talk of plugins but can't find ANY online at the moment.
Thanks.

Mr Ben,
I am having similar difficulty finding programs that offer 'extensions' within the Photos App.
I think that gone are the days when we could perform an 'Edit with...'
My understanding is that Apple has only opened 'Extensions for Photos editing' for IOS.  It hasn't yet made it available as an option for OS X.
I hope this changes, as many serious photographers migrating from Aperture and now using Photos on OS X will want to perform additional edits with third party software without having to export and then re-import images - as seems to be the only solution at the moment.
Hopefully, behind the scenes there is a mad flurry of activity by App producers to create extensions for OS X that will eventually be switched on by Apple.
I would love to know. Can anyone from Apple please advise?

Adobe now hides the editor - what looks like it is not - you want the editor hidden in the support folder - see http://forums.adobe.com/message/3955558#3955558 for details

  • Is it wise/ok to use and external hard drive that requires Tuxera NTFS for Mac.dmg to be installed?

I had a white screen issue twice recently and freaked out.  I got everything back but worried now that my imac will crash and I will lose
all my files/pictures.  I purchased an external hard drive, a Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Plus with 1TB to install to backup my files.  I went to
install it and it says that for Mac you must install Tuxera NTFS for Mac.dmg, which says it enables read/write support for the NTFS
partition on your Mac.  Is this a good way to back  of files on a Mac?  If not what is better?  Is there an Apple product for back up?
Please help I am clueless and worried about the dreaded white screen!

Depending on whether you need to use this as a boot drive and what model iMac you have (PPC or Intel) you will need to reformat the drive as a GUID or APS drive with Disk Utility. OSX Tips:  Using Disk Utility: Format,  Erase,  or  Reformat  a  Drive

  • Problems with Photos for Mac

Last night, I upgraded to Photos and I've noticed three problems for which I'd like help.
First, Photos seems to have lost about 10 percent of my photos.  When upgrading, it asked me which of my two iPhoto libraries I wanted to upgrade and it only gave me the option to select one.  Now, I can't find any option to import my second library.  How do I do that and add my missing photos?
Second, I spent months organizing curating my iPhoto library, which consists of 35,000 photos, into various events.  The new Photos app has completely obliterated that hard work by removing "events" from the organization and then by jumbling photos into what seems to be, at times, a random ordering.  Is there any way to resurrect my events and the prior chronology I had established for my photos?  I am absolutely fuming at what occurred.
Third, even though I turned on iCloud support for my Photo library, and purchased additional iCloud storage for my photos, no additional photos from my Mac's photo library seem to be appearing on my iPhone or iPad.  Is anyone else having that issue?
In sum, I'm not sure what benefits this supposed upgrade from iPhoto actually provides to consumers.  It destroys consumers' prior work, replaces it with chaotic organization -- especially for consumers with large photo libraries -- and its most compelling feature -- iCloud support -- doesn't seem to work.
Apple, I have been a loyal customer for many years but I must say that the quality of your software upgrades, both on the Mac and the iPhone/iPad, is deteriorating sharply.  It used to be that when a consumer bought your products or loaded your software, it worked with few apparent bugs.  Now, I increasingly find that major features don't work well or don't work at all.  I am beginning to feel the frustration and irritation with Apple that I felt with Microsoft and that had made me flee Windows for OS.

Use the feedback form to let the developer team know:  Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback
This apparent mess is intentional. Photos organization of the library is automatic. It will structure the library by Moments - grouping the photos by location and date.
The only organization you can add are albums and smart albums based on keywords, etc.
However, your events should have been migrated. You should be seeing a folder "iPhoto Events", with albums for each event. Is this folder missing?

  • New Photo in OS X option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!

    Hi
I have just updated my iPhoto to Photos in OS X and i have noticed that the option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!
Its now a pain to send a photo directly to my favourite photo editing software.
    Ross

    Thanks Terence
Totally understand being a new app and not an update.
So i'm a ammeter photographer and i like the way i can view my photos in iPhoto and i'm happy with the new App for this also, however i like to edit my photos in PS from time to time and i shoot in raw. As i can no longer select edit in external editor from the photo app i tired to drag a RAW photo to PS but this didn't work. i then tried dragging to desktop but this then made a jpeg so i loose my raw advantage. I would like to be able to find my original raw photos easily so i can edit them in PS.
    Hope that makes sense?

  • Sluggish problem with using an external editor

Whenever I use an external editor (CS5 now) and also Nik software, when I return to Lightroom with the edited file, the problem occurs if I want to do further editing on the picture back in Lightroom. The resonse when I click on something (contrast, saturation, or anything) is sluggish. The screen blinks momentarily, as though blacking out, and then comes back on. If I switch ot a new picture, unedited, it's fine. Can anyone offer any solutions?  Thanks in advance

There is a Windows based utility that will allow one to change the location of the 'My Music' folder, but you appear to be running a Mac.
You may find more appropriate help in the iTunes for Mac Discussions.
If you are running Windows, post back and some info can be provided.

  • Is anybody use LR with Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac ?

I've just bought Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac on a PM G5 (OS 10.5.2). PSE works but LR don't find it as external editor. I have done what is the Knowledge Base, I've deleted all adobe products (and all related files in /Library an home/Library) and reinstall only PSE 6 and LR 1.3.1 .
In KB, they tell that LR uses a com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist but PSE 6 creates a com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist (without a dot between Photoshop and Elements). I've tried to duplicates this file but that does not work.
I don't understand why LR does not provide a way to specify where Photoshop (or Elements) is. I don't know what to do now.

For some reason Adobe decided to change the bundle name for the PSE6 application from com.adobe.photoshop.elements to com.adobe.PhotoshopElements. This change is also reflected in the Preferences file names.
Lightroom (1.3.1 and 1.4) seem to use the MacOS core services to find PSE - but use the com.adobe.photoshop.elements (and com.adobe.photoshop for full PS) bundle names.
The immediate fix, if you're handy with a hex editor, is to go into the Lightroom application bundle, find the file AgEditExternally.lua and patch the string "com.adobe.photoshop.elements" in the file so it becomes "com.adobe.PhotoshopElements" (remember a null terminator and make a copy of the file first!).
If that's Greek to you then either live with it and wait for an official fix or set up Elements 6 as the 'Additional External Editor'.

  • Why use an external editor?

I have done a search on this basic question, but everyone is at least one step ahead of me. I found lots of questions about using external editors, but none on why to use one if the first place.
It's self-evident that the basic answer is to extend Aperture's capabilities. So let me narrow the focus of my question as follows:
    1. Just out of curiousity, there must be at least some overlap in things that Aperture does and what the external editor can do, correct?
    2. Can you share some guidelines as to when you would stay in Aperture itself and when you would  use the external editor through Aperture?
    3. An obvious question is why use Aperture when you have an external editor?  The most likely answer is that Aperture does some things better, and the external editor does other things better. So does it come down to experience in deciding which program to use for what? As someone whose post processing has, for years, been limited to cropping, that's a pretty daunting reality. Any advice anyone can offer to offset my inexperience would be appreciated. For example, someone on a share-your-image type forum just blasted me when I posted something labled as my first effort at using a RAW file. I made "local" changes here and there in the image. He told me I'm doing things "totally wrong" and I should make global changes, and avoid making local changes. I don't know if he's right or not, but if he is, how was I to know that? So again, any advice for a PP newb would be great.
    Thanks!
    Ben

    Good questions, Ben!
And probably the answers are a matter of taste and personal preferences, and depending on the workflow we are using.
    2. Can you share some guidelines as to when you would stay in Aperture itself and when you would  use the external editor through Aperture?
For me, the escape to an external editor is an occasionally necessary evil, if I really need to do things well, that Aperture cannot do.  The problem is, that using an external editor will break Aperture's lossless workflow; it will create an additional original image file, and Aperture cannot undo the edits done in the external editor. And the additional original files will be gigantic 16bit tiffs or PSD files. So I would never use the external editor without a pressing need.
I use an external editor, if I need to create images with transparency or do advanced retouching that requires the composition of two or more images. That are things that Aperture cannot do.
Or, if I have images that need lens correction or perspective correction.
    3. An obvious question is why use Aperture when you have an external editor?
I use Aperture first of all, to keep my images organised - my Aperture library is my database of all photos I have taken during my lifetime.
And I use Aperture to edit the images and to keep track of the edited image versions and how they relate. For 99% of my image processing needs Aperture is sufficient and great.

  • How To Integrate Photoshop with Photos

I'm trying to get Photos to use an external editor (Photoshop) but I can't see how to do it.  Any clues?
So far, I'm not a fan of Photos.

There is no way except by exporting. Apparently we're waiting for developers to write extension scripts that would allow external editors to hook into the app.

I keep receiving this error and then Photoshop crashes. Has anyone encountered this issue and if so how did you resolve it? You need to update your video driver from the website of the manufacturer of your video card.  You cannot rely on Windows Update or Microsoft, which typically have outdated drivers.

i have switched from PC to Mac how do i use my windows version  of adobe photoshop CS3 on my MAC?

    rebel1568,
All Photoshop versions through CS6 came with platform-specific licenses, either Windows or PC.  You could get a cross-grade of platform swap at a nominal cost but not for older versions, only for whatever Photoshop versions was current at the time.
CS3 is totally out of the upgrade or cross-grade loop.  You'd have to buy a new license for CS6 Mac or subscribe to Photoshop CC, as Trevor points out.
Curt Y is correct in that CS2 will not run on current Mac-Intel machines.  You would need a used Mac G5 or G4 with a PowerPC (IBM) CPU, which have been obsolete since mid 2006.
Of course, you could run your Windows  on your Mac if you installed and ran BootCamp or Parallells.

  • Using an external ethernet hard disk to store photos

I would like to use an external hard disk to view my photos with iphoto from different macs connected to the ethernet external hardisk
Is it possible? and how should I set my machines?

Are you wanting each machine to view those photos thru iPhoto? There are several ways of sharing and others can fill you in more on the conventional ways. Some are:

Let me suggest another possible way.
That is use iPhoto in it's alias mode on each of the machines. Then store your source files on the external HD and let each machine create an alias based library of those files. Each machine will have an independent, unique library whose edits, slideshows, etc will be unique to that machine. Those machines can only delete the alias files from their library, they can't touch the original source files. The only caveat is if the external HD is not mounted the library will only be able to be used in a limited way, viewing thumbnails, adding comments and keywords only. You can put a few photos in a folder on the external HD and create a test alias library to experiment.
I've created some Tutorials to assist users in converting over to an alias based system.
