Using an external hard drive on Windows 7 with Boot Camp

Is there a SIMPLE way to store and use all the files and software on my partition Boot Camp with an external hard drive (apart from Windows 7 itself)?
I heard that it's difficult to make a bootable Boot Camp on an external HD, but my partition in my internal HD is too small.
I am looking for a way to keep Boot Camp and Windows 7 on my Internal HD, and to set Windows 7 to save everything rose on a dedicated External HD (using Firewire or USB).
By the way, will I be able to use this External HD on others PC to access m'y files and run Somers software (like iTunes)?
Thanks,

Yes I need to run Windows natively (to play games).
The first option that you gave me was what I was looking for. I just need some details:
    - How do I edit Windows 7 to store automatically everything in my External HD?
    - Will I be able use this External HD as a big USB key on other computers running Windows:
. accessing the files stored in it?
. running the software stored in it? (like iTunes, Spotify, or Office)
Thanks,

  • How can I use an external USB drive on my Macmini with Boot Camp and Lion/Windows 7?

I have a MacMini (Last model with a disk drive). The Mini has Lion and Windows 7 installed using Boot Camp. I want to attach a 350GB, USB, HP Personal Storage Device (Hard Drive) to the computer and be able to use it in both Lion and Windows 7 mode. The USB drive is formatted for Windows 7. I only want to use it for storage and back-up purposes for both operating systems. It would be nice if I could access the total disk from either system without having to reboot to change operating systems to view Windows 7 files and reboot again to view Lion files. Can anyone offer any guidance or any informational websites to help me? Thank you for any help!!

Yes, you’ll be able to do that.

Yes. Windows supports external USB drives.

  • I was using an external hard drive to store video with my MAC. I absent mindedly connected the external drive to a Windows PC and now my mac will not recognize the video files.

What did you do to the drive while connected to a Windows PC?

  • Trouble using an external hard drive

Here's my situation: I have a fourth generation iPod touch with about 1700 songs, 10 or so podcast subscriptions, and my apps all set up with ratings, etc. Due to size of my PC's hard drive, I have to use an external hard drive to run iTunes with my supporting music and podcast files. This is the G: drive. I do NOT want iTunes to use my C: drive for any purpose. In Preferences, I have the iTunes media folder location set to G:\Music and would like all of my music, podcats, and apps to be stored in that location.
The problem I'm having is about once every two weeks or so, the external hard drive will get bumped or jarred and disconnect during a sync. Instead of stopping the sync and failing, iTunes will automatically move everything over to the C: drive and blow up my memory, create a new library, etc.
I have to delete this off my C: drive, which clears everything out of iTunes, and go to File > Add Folder to Library to restore all of my music and podcasts. It loses all of my ratings and I have to resubscribe to all podcasts (and delete the list of episodes I've already listened to). If I sync the iPod, it will delete all of the music and podcasts on the iPod because it thinks it has been synced to a different library when it just synced to a different drive. How in the world can I prevent iTunes from using the C: drive, and if it does, how can I transfer music and podcasts from my iPod to the iTunes library without losing 1,700 ratings?
Next question, when I a File > Transfer Purchases From iPod without syncing to get my Apps back, how do I make the apps go to G:\Music instead of C:\ drive?
    Thanks

When you first opened the catalog on new Win7 laptop, was it the same catalog that you used on old laptop?
You may indeed have permissions set for the catalog folder. They could belong to the user of the old laptop. Did you try checking the permissions on the new Win7 laptop?

Migrate an iTunes library from one computer to another
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entireiTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one, with ratings, play counts, playlists etc. preserved. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library and unlike copying with Windows Explorer the process can be resumed if it is interrupted and it will continue to the next item if there are any read/access errors.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • When I installed iTunes 11 on a windows 8 system I get the music, but the screen dosn't have te library on the left.  The left side of iTunes is the name.  I got the songs by using a external hard drive.  What have I done wrong?

When I installed iTunes 11 on a Windows 8 system the installation did not seem to work correctly.  There is no sidebar and no ribbon w/ File, Edit, etc.  I tried to use an external hard drive to move from an older computer using XP to the new one w/ Wdw 8.  I thought if I deleted iTunes from the Wdw 8, I could reload it. Apparently I did not delete the music files because they appeared in the format I complained about, no side bar or ribbon.  Can anyone walk me through the process of deleting everything and reinstalling?  I am not very computer savy so a step by step would really be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    ctrl B - Show menus
    ctrl S - Show sidebar

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Restoring using an external hard drive help

Ok so.. ive recnelty received my mac back from apple, after javing the hd replaced. To prevent the loss of all of my stuff i bought an external hd and used this as my time machine backup, so now its all on my external hard drive. The problem ive got is that ive got no idea how to restore my mac using the extermal hard drive so its like it was before it was sent off. ive been told one option is to launch my mac in recovery mode and choose to restore using. my external hard drive there. however i cant access recovery mode because i have a wireless keyboard, and the only wired keyboard i have is a windows one. also, to make matters worse, i cant use any discs because my optical drive is broken, so until i receive my extermal one, discs are also out. of the option.
any other ways to do it?
    thanks!

Try this, your going to be using a program called Migration Assistant to restore data from a different computer's Time Machine. Your computer is a different computer now because of the new Hard Drive, so instead of entirely recovering the Operating System, this will save time and data by allowing you to choose individually what you want to restore and what you don't want to.
Do not use Migration Assistant, instead you will use Setup Assistant (which starts automatically when you first start your Mac) if you already started you Mac and added a user then you will have to use MA, but you will need to remove a user afterwards.

  • Using an external hard drive with a Mac and a PC?

I have an external hard drive that I've used with my Windows PC/ itunes / music that I've copied to the PC. Can I use the external hard drive that I use with my Windows PC on my Mac/ itunes / music I've downloaded to my Mac?

    (1) Any hard drive may fail at any moment. If you don't have a backup for this external hard drive, your pictures are half-gone already.
    (2) If you're trying to make this drive a repository for your music and pics, then its best to format it as FAT32. That's the file system with the widest compatibility, and you'll be able to use the drive with Mac, Win, media players, even TVs with built-in media players. For practicality, it's probably best to keep it attached to a desktop machine and share it on your home LAN for all other devices.

  • Using an external hard drive with Airport Extreme

I'd like to use an external hard drive to store movies and music through my Airport Extreme. The drive is connected to a powered usb hub which is connected to the Extreme. I can see the drive in Airport Utility but I can't figure out how to use it.

    Hi,
I have just tried to set up an Airport Extreme with an external hard drive at home. I have 4 computers connected to the "network" - an iMac, a MacBookPro and 2 x windows machines. A printer is connected wirelessly to the two Macs.
I cannot find the hard drive - I have tried the steps mentioned by Bob Timmons Mar 17 2010, but the only things I see under "Shared" in Finder are the iMac and the printer - not the Airport Extreme (seems odd??), not the windows machines, and most importantly, not the hard drive connected to the USB port on the Airport Extreme.
I therefore expect that the iMac and printer are connected wirelessly and directly, rather than through my network (& I'm happy for the printer to be connected this way, but I do need the PCs and the hard drive all networked).
According to my network connection, (in top bar on the screen) I am definitely connected to the network - yet nothing else shows in finder??
I do, however, see the USB hard Drive when I go into Finder>Applications>Utilities>AirportUtility.app, under my Airport Extreme >Disks. I've also gone through all the set up procedures for "File Sharing."
I have read other posts about formatting the hard drive ether FAT32 or NFTS - is this something I now need to do?? If so, which one should I use, and once I do it, will I then see it?
Presumably, in order to format the Hard Drive, I will need to disconnect it from the Airport Extreme, and connect it directly to one of the Macs too?
My apologies for so many questions, but this is all very technical stuff for the non-techie layperson.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide on one or more of the questions / issues.

  • External Hard Drive (from windows to Mac)

    Hi Mac users!
I just moved from Windows to Mac and I'm very glad I made the switch. However, I am having some issues with my Win-Mac transistion. I have 3 external hard drives that I used under Windows to keep backups of my videos and personal files. Out of the 3 external hard drives, only one is recognized by OS X (10.5). I really need the other 2 to be recognized to transfer some more data to my new Mac system. Could you please help me to figure out what to do??
Here are some information on my 3 externl hard drives:
1 is a WD My Book (working fine)
1 is a La Cie Porsche model (Not working)
1 is a Ximeta (Not working)
I tried several USB ports, USB hubs. I have checked the Utilities to make sure the hard drive is not recognized/detected. Please, i need help to recover some important information and to complete my Windows-Mac transistion!
    Thank you for your help!

I had to ask...I also have to ask, when you tried a USB hub, was it an externally powered hub? Sometimes a USB disk won't mount because there isn't enough USB power. However, Mac OS has always given me an explicit message to that effect...
If your LaCie came with a CD, you might use it to install drivers. In principle, that shouldn't be necessary, but is a possibility. If it is a drivers issue then you may be SOL for the Ximeta; glancing at their website--but not necessarily for the right product--they seem to claim that their hard drives require Windows. But I've never had to install drivers on a Mac to use an external hard drive.
It shouldn't be an NTFS issue because NTFS is still readable, just not writable, as you already observed with the WD. The filesystem(s) should still mount.

  • I am not able to use my external hard drive with my Mac.

I am not able to use my external hard drive with my Mac. It was initially used with my Windows 7 laptop. Now when I insert my Hard drive in the Mac, it doesn't allow me to delete, format, make folders or copy new files on to my hard drive. I no longer have a Windows PC and am stuck. I tried going to Disc utilities, selected my HD, clicked on Erase and then changed the Format type to MS-DOS (FAT) but no luck .. Any other steps or advice?

It was likely formatted in NTFS which is readable by the Mac, but not writeable.
You should be able to reformat the disk in Disk Utility.
After having copied all the data off of it, you can try re-partitioning it.
Select the hard drive in the disk list in Disk Utility. Hard drives are the device itself, are left-aligned in the list, and are usually named with the manufacturer, size, and model number.
    Click on the Partition tab.
Select 1-partition from the partition menu.
Click the Options button and set to GUID
Set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Give the Volume a name and click Apply.
