Using an External HDD

Bonjour everyone!
This is a problem that i'm having major difficulty with, I've just imported about 30gb's worth of video (i know right?) and it's really bringing the amount of space I have on my HDD down, so I was wondering if there's a way to put all the video i'm importing on a separate hardive?
It would save me so much space O_O

It is strongly recommended that you store/capture video footage and render files to a drive other than the system (boot) drive. Just about any Firewire, SATA or eSATA drive will work with most low-demanding video formats (DV, HDV, etc). However, some formats have very specific storage and data rate requirements.

  • Can I use my external hdd with OSX server

Hi i am thinking about using OSX server, but I dont have very much space on the computer I would b running it of of so I would store everything on my 4TB Wd external HDD. Is this posible, and how would I set it up to do that? Also, my external also has some backups from other computers on it and will I loose any of that? I would probably partition it so that 1TB of it has all the servers files and everything.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yep you can use any connected drive for server storage, its under the settings tab called Service Data
No you wouldn't lose anything on the drive (assuming its Mac formatted) but clean partition would be a good idea

  • Is it possible for me to sync to multiple computers using an external HDD?

I just bought a 1TB external HDD and have all my music on it, as well as the installed and latest version of iTunes, as well I think I have the iTunes media file on there as well.
So using all of those things is it possible to sync my iPhone 5 to multiple computers? Like can I start syncing on my Laptop and unplug and cancel the sync and continue it on my Desktop
If there is I would imagine that it has to be either really easy or really complex. Either or I would like to know if it is possible!
If you need any more info just ask and I could provide anything that isn't personal.

Yes, if you have the entire library organized properly on the external drive then you can connect it to any computer running the same build of iTunes. See make a split library portable for details. You should also keep a backup on another drive.

  • Using an external hdd with windows on boot camp

Im looking into using boot camp, and was thinking about the option that you get for seeing files that you create in XP within mac OSX, well, wot would happen if i had an external hdd?
ive got one connected thru firewire, and when i use "Get Info" it tells me the format is Mac OS Extended.
Now, would that be recognised within XP, and would i be able to move/store files onto it, and then use them within OSX
If it could, then it would save me having to use a large partition for XP, and the alternative format type.
If anyone could help me out
    Cheers
    Jon

    well, wot would

You would need to ensure that both the Mac OS and Windows XP OS had read/write privileges.

    Extended.

No, not without third party software.
    and would i
be able to move/store files onto it, and then use

You could is you used MacDrive which will allow you to read Mac formatted disks on a Windows PC.

  • Limiting Space used on external HDD for Time Machine

I'm really clueless on how this works and I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I recently bought an external HDD and I want to limit the allocated space for TM to only half of the capacity. I recently formatted the external HDD to FAT32 in order for me to use it with my other systems.
Is it possible to make this work? I saw an article wherein you can create a disk image in the external HDD, will that work?
Below are some specs of my external HDD:
Objective: Use Time Machine on my 1TB External HDD while limiting the space to only 400MB for back-up.
External HDD Settings: Iomega External HDD formatted as FAT32 and Master Boot Record

    Hello,
Here is the best solution I can think of without using any extra software to alter your Time Machine settings.
You could use Disk Utility to divide the 1 TB external HDD into two partitions (400 GB + 600 GB).
    (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app)
Warning: Using Disk Utility to divide the drive into two partitions will erase everything on them.
Once that's done, when you reconnect your hard drive to your computer, and open Time Machine in System Settings, you could assign Time Machine to the 400 GB partition.
Here is the catch though, Time Machine cannot backup to FAT32, so you would have to format at least the 400 GB partition as "Mac OS Extended Journaled" with Disk Utility. If you want to use that drive with other non-Mac systems, best solution would be to share it over the network.
That is the best I can think of for your problem. Hope that helps.

  • Can I use an external HDD for Boot Camp?

I've got the new MacBook. So, I'm gonna be short on space if I allocate space from the in built Hard Disk or ssd whatever you want to call it..
Is it in any way possible to set up the windows account with an external hard drive(with USB 3)? Or can I use time capsule(or whatever their external hard disk is called) as an external drive for windows?
Since I'll mostly be playing games in windows, I'll need decent space there too...

I'm not sure you're numbers are quite right. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit installed right now with Service Pack 1 on my bootcamp partition. I've also got Steam and Deus Ex: Human Revolution installed. Steam and the game occupy 8.47GB of space. Total space occupied on the disk is 21.2 GB, which means Windows is taking 12.73 GB. So I'd say the system requirements of 16GB for 32bit and 20GB for 64bit definitely include cache and paging, and also account for service packs and drivers.
You could easily get by with 20GB minimum space for bootcamp.
Take a moment and read the posts on this site, users who installed Windows in a 30G or less partition come here regularly trying to find the easy way to make it larger. We'll help you when you need the space.
Windows 7 should not be installed in less than a 40G partition, larger if the drive is an SSD.

  • Using 1 External HDD to store iTunes content AND Time Machine Backup

Ok, I don't know a great deal about external hard drives but from what I've read, I'm hoping there's an option to use a 2TB hard drive to store my iTunes content, and as a Time Machine hard drive for backing up. Is this at all possible?
I have an iMac and a MacBook (therefore this would be quite beneficial). If I attach a 2TB hard drive to an AirPort Extreme Base station can I use Time Machine on BOTH computers, linked wirelessly to the one hard drive?
Is it just a matter of partitioning, say, 500GB for storage and the rest (1.5TB) for Time Machine?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ry

The best way is to partition the drive - one for your iTunes and one for TM backups.
Using a drive connected to an AEBS for TM backups is not supported, but it can be done. Use Airport Utility to set up the TM drive and turn on File Sharing. You will have to "mount" the shared drive before you can use it with TM. Same with the partition you would use for iTunes.

  • Backup: How to set Bunring folder to use an external HDD

For Backup with OS X resources only i'd like to use burning folder. Instead of limited DVD capacity i'd like to point the burning folder to my iomega drive. How can i do that?
Simply drop and drag the burning folder to my iomega drive would just save the alias but not the dynamic content of the folders i want to backup. I am sure someone found a smart way to do backups... so pls. let me know
    Regards,
    Harpo

I, too, am interested in how to accomplish something like this. However, I would like to be able to "burn" my burn folder to a flash drive instead of a disk. For all the same reasons that a " +burn disk+" is great for CDs and DVDs, it would be, too, for other media.
I suspect this requires a change to the burn-disk function, but wouldn't think that it is too big - most of the heavy lifting is already done.

  • Is it possible to use an external hard drive to just copy files off a Mac?

I am looking into getting a WD Passport as my MacBook's hard drive has recently crashed. All I want to do is use it like I use a USB stick, so take it out, plug it into another computer occasionally and generally just store info and photos etc externally as a back up. Is TimeMachine the best thing to use or just manually take it from the MacBook and onto another PC when I need without using any software?

If you wish to use Time Machine as your backup system, it is best to use an external HDD dedicated to that one application.
If you want to use the new WD HDD on PCs as well as your Mac, the make certain that it is formatted so it is compatible with both systems,  Macs can read PC formatted HDDs but not write to them.  FAT or exFAT are two choices you may consider.
    Ciao.

  • Installed OS X Snow Leopard on external HDD, now won't allow me to delete files from Mac internal drive

    Hi,
I am stuck!  My 1 TB iMac 27" decided to stop booting up and would only stay at the grey screen with the apple, gear turning and progress bar. When it got to a certain point on the progress bar it would shut down.  Thanks to so many helpful people and their experiences I was able to try many different things including (Command + S, typing /sbin/mount -uw / enter , chmod 775 / enter, logout enter, then rebooting holding down Command + V) and (Reinstalling OS X and using Disk Utility to repair - came up with Disk can't be fixed).
Nothing worked until I read a couple of very wise answers who said "Your hard drive is not dead, but too full...keep at least 10% free at all times". I was down to about 1% (ooops!)  Thankfully hubby had bought me an external HDD for Christmas, onto which I installed OS X and being connected to my iMac, it recognized my internal Macintosh HD and all my files are there.  Phewww!  But I don't want to use my external HDD as my startup disk, I wan't to keep my Macintosh HD for startup but it is too full to repair and select as startup.
My problem is that I cannot delete files from Macintosh HD, and I've tried to unlock files/folders but they don't seem to be locked.  But when I drag them to the trash can it says "The item ... can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted."  Again, many helpful answers online, but nothing is working.  I have 2 Finder windows open, one with external HDD (new startup disk), and old HDD (Macintosh HD) but all items in Macintosh HD can't be altered or deleted (right click doesn't highlight to change the name).  So if I can't delete my files, I can't reinstall OS X and repair disk and select it as my startup disk.  I'd be so thrilled if someone can help me.  I have tried unlocking folders, and I downloaded 'Trashit'. Neither worked, so I figure because it has the little pencil crossed out on the menu bar that it is protected somehow...I just don't know how/what to do.  Thanks

Ok, so I'll try set it out a bit clearer than my first post,
This is what I've done, and the results:
    1. My son unplugged working iMac Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, 1TB with only 11GB available space
    2. Turned it on and got the white screen, apple, turning gear and load-up bar
    3. Turned Mac off and waited 1/2 a minute.
    4. Turned Mac back on...(same as 3.), tried again many times
    5. Began searching internet for answers (see original post)
    6. Found answers and did the following:
                   1.     Put OS X installation disk into drive
                   2.     Attached External Hard Drive
                   3.     Installed OS X onto External Hard Drive (With a different name & password to original HDD)
                   4.     Found Macintosh HD still worked so tried to delete files only to get message saying                                           files couldn't be deleted (see original post)
I've tried changing the permissions in 'Get Info' and this is what happens:
1.Right click Macintosh HD - says "You can only read"
Name: System - Read & Write
                                                                 Admin -   Read & Write
                                                                 Everyone - Read only
2.Click on padlock to unlock - doesn't turn black to be able to change anything
3.Check the box "Ignore ownership on this volume" (someone else advised to do this)
    4.Name changes to 'mydrive (Me)'
5.Lock padlock and Name still says mydrive (Me) but still 'You can only read'
I don't know what is wrong or what to do, but perhaps you are right LowLuster, that because I named them different names it is protected in some way.
My thought now is to copy all my files to the external HDD and then erase and install again on my internal HD, but I really need my calendar, emails etc from my old HD and not sure they can be found on the old HD to copy over.
    Still stuck!

  • Exclamation marks with external HDD

Isn't there any solution to refresh the iTunes library? I'm using an external HDD and mount and unmount every day. Then, iTunes loses the connection showing exclamation marks! There is no re-connection functions. It's really stupid.

Connect your HDD to your iMac. Open Finder window and navigate to Computer (Go > Computer). Right click on your external HDD (or higlight it and press CMD+i).
When Get Info window will be open, navigate to Sharing and permissions section and check if option Ignore ownership on this volume is selected:

  • External HDD (for Time Machine backup) detected but won't mount on desktop

I have been using this external HDD as my Time Machine backup for many months now. No desktop display settings have been changed (I checked), but now it won't mount on my desktop. I suspect one of my kids was banging around on the keyboard, as they have done in the past, and renamed it. Unfortunately it appears they renamed it to NULL this time around. I didn't think that was possible, but I've plugged it into 3 different Windows and iMac machines, and in all cases the external drive gets detected, but then in all cases it doesn't mount. The Volume Label does appear blank in the device properties.
Is there a way to access my drive again to rename it? Will that allow it to mount again? Or is there a way to access it to just reformat the whole darn thing?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I don't think it's possible to have a null name for a drive so i suspect there is a problem with it. open disk utility. does it show the name of the drive? try repairing it (repair disk not permissions). if that doesn't help you can always reformat it with Disk Utility. select the whole drive ( model, not name) and use the partition tab.

  • Backup from (not to) External HDD

Searched the forums and googled and seen plenty of information on backing up to an external HDD attached to a TC but can't seem to find out if you can back up an external HDD attached to a MacBook to a TC.
My MacBook has a 160GB internal drive but is overflowing with RAW files so using an external HDD (also 160GB) to supplement. If I buy a 500GB TC will time-machine backup both of these to it? Or will it only back up the internal drive and I will still need to buy another external HDD to back up the existing one?
Thanks in advance for any help....

  • Mavericks not "seeing" files on external hdd

This has to be the single weirdest thing I've ever experienced on any Mac I've owned.
I have an external hdd that contains all my pictures sorted by year, followed by a folder for the raw images extracted from my iPhone using Image Capture. This is done on my iMac and I've been doing it this way for years.
Today, I freed up some much needed space on my iPhone using the above method. When I deleted the images from my Camera Roll on my iPhone, I went into the external hdd and saw that the files I just literally transfered were gone! I checked the trash, other folders and even the desktop and they were gone...simply disapperared. Clicking into a random year showed no subfolders, consequently: no files.
Frantic, I unplugged the external hdd and plugged it into my Macbook Air (not running Mavericks just yet). The files from the aforementioned random year were actually all there, as well as some root folders containing iPhone pictures I backed up a few weeks ago. It even had the photos i transfered off my wife's phone prior to working on my own. But the folder that shows my photos were still not there.
I am currently running a diagnostic software for data recovery. There is no iCloud backup as of last night (most recent was two days ago). Not a photostream person so that's not turned on. I was able to get many of the photos from the Google Plus iPhone app.
My question is: what gives? How does Mavericks show an empty folder but my Macbook Air shows files? I just used this external hdd on my iMac the other day and those files were there. There is no hidden files option or anything...no preferences have been changed on the computer. Why is this happening and can I get my "deleted" data back? For the life of me I cannot understand some features in Mavericks...but this one erks me.

Interesting that no files show when plugged into the USB port, drive looks empty with the exception of the space remaining. Folder structures show when plugged into firewire 400. The drive has an external power supply.

  • Airport Express, External HDD & Time Machine

    Hi Guys,
Sorry if this has been answered before but I have tried to search for the answer and can't find one.
I am toying with buying a Time Capsule for my backups but it was suggested to me that an Airport Express with an external HDD attached to it will work with Time Machine....Is this the case.
Not only will this save me money but there is much feedback about the TIME CAPSULE overheating after 18 months...thats a lot of money every 18 months.
    Many Thanks

PLEASE call the store, or ask for the manager if you go back. Calmly but firmly ask them to inform their personnel. (They don't get a lot of training on Time Machine, and don't actually use it in the stores.)
