Using an external microphone with a powerbook without webcam

I would think that using my powerbook as a phone would work really well, but I don't have a built-in microphone. Ae there any special features I should look for if I buy one? Or perhaps a special brand?
Thanks!

Okay, The 'Internal Built-in microphone' is selected in the sound department.
Processor speed 1.67 GHz, 1GB DDR RAM. Model? As far as I know it's a 15" Alum. Powerbook G4. Is there more to the model than that? It's almost 5 years old, time for a new one. But it's still working okay - knock on wood.
Anyhoo, I am going to try this. If it works, it's so much cheaper than a phone.
Thank you very much for the help, it's highly appreciated!!!
Kind regards,
Mildred.

  • How do I use an external microphone with iPhone Facetime?

Model of iphone doesn't matter to me.  I have an Iphone 4S or Iphone 5 to use.  I am specifically trying to use a wireless microphone set with Facetime so I can get better audio quality at a distance.  Of course, I have a mount for my phone so it's pointed toward me.  Can anyone figure out how I can bypass the internal microphones and use and external?  I have already tried plugging into the jack on the phone, but no luck.
If there is some sort of adapter to plug into the Lightning port or 30pin that might bypass the external mics when using Facetime then I can go with that too.
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hello lizarose,
You might consider recording your video in the QuickTime Player application. The QuickTime Player application will allow you to control input sources for both your video and audio (allowing you to choose the Fast Track for audio and the iSight camera for video).
Once in QuickTime Player, choose 'New Movie Recording' from the File menu. In the resulting window, on the controls bar (near the record button), there will be a small triangle. This triangle will produce a menu allowing you to choose your Fast Track as the desired microphone.
Once the video is recorded and satisfactory, from the File menu, you can choose 'Export To,' then 'iMovie...' After the export process completes, open iMovie (close and re-open if necessary), and you should be prompted to import the video into iMovie. If, for some reason, iMovie is not an option, the video can be exported to the Desktop or the Movies folder (if exporting, choose 'Movie' for Format), then imported into iMovie via the File menu, 'Import,' 'Movies...'

  • Using an external microphone with a Mac Pro Tower

I have a Mac Pro tower with OS 10.4.11 and I have a question regarding recording sound through an external microphone.
I own a microphone with a 1/4" jack and when I plug it into the designated input on the back of my tower, I'm not getting any sound. I've troubleshooted with a couple different microphones and none seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some sort of configuration that I have to do when using a mic?
    Please help!

I'm sorry, but that's not really my area of expertise. If you are planning to use this for simple voice-recording you could try the Griffin iMic device which helps provide both pre-amplification and impedance matching between a mini-plug mic and a USB port for sound input. I've used it recording music from a boom-box to a MacBook.
The tech specs state that the audio line-level in port is:
Input impedance greater than 20,000 ohms
Input level: Max 2 V rms (+8.2 dbµ)
I would look for a mic that meets those specifications. MacSpeech.com has several microphone/headset recommendations for use with their Dictate and iListen voice recognition software. I would think that their suggestions would be useful.

  • How does one use an external microphone with the internal camera?

I want to use the internal camera because I don't have anything better but I want to use an external mic to record video and sound simultaneously, for a video blog. How does one accomplish this? I'm getting no help from the manual.

Try this. Connect your external mic, either through the audio line in port or, into a USB port if it is a USB mic and then go to System Preferences under the Apple and select the Sound icon under Hardware. Click on your mic shown in the list of input devices.
    Hope that works for you.

  • Using an external microphone with Premiere pro

Hey Guys, I'm new to this forum and I really don't know if you guys could help me with this. But I have bought a Samson C01U microphone a few days ago and I really want to use Adobe Premiere pro to record some guitar covers of myself. The problem is however; I record my video's with my sony handycam and I want to use my new mic to record the sound but when I press F5 (to capture a movie in Premiere pro) it still uses the microphone from my camera. What should I do?
I have already tried this: http://premierepro.wikia.com/wiki/Microphone
    Thanks everyone
    Stijn Jasper
    ~The Netherlands

This is how I do it at the moment: I start premiere pro and Audience. Then I turn off my speakers to make sure it doesn't get feedback from it. Then I hit record on both programs and sync up the video and audio lines after my movie is done (then I also disable the audio that my Handycam has recorded)
But that's a lot of work if you want to shoot many video's. There must be a better way right?
This is how I got my microphone enabled in Pr: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408222.html
It works, but only if I want to record AFTER I have recorded the movie (like a voice-over)
Any more ideas? (thanks for all the great reply's btw) you guys are really helpful

  • How do I use two external monitors with my laptop?

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

  • I want to use a external cam with xp in bootcamp but....

Ive read reports that you will blue screen if you try and use your built in isight with xp.
I would like to therefore use an external one with msn messenger in xp on my intel imac.
My question is can I disable the built in isight before I do this otherwise if im in msn and I click 'video' then surely the imac will look for the isight rather than the external webcam thus causing a blue screen?
basically I just want my external cam to take priority over the built in isight when in windows.

Yes, you should disable the iSight camera under Imaging devices in the Device Manager.

  • Using an external display with the macbook air

hi, i wanna know if i can use an external display with the macbook air as the tunderbolt is a bit pricey? i was thinking about buyin a LCD moniter wih a VGA port. many thanks

Yes.  You can use VGA DVI or HDMI monitors by buying a  Minidisplay port to xxx adapter and the the appropriate cable (vga, dvi or hdmi).
The MiniDisplayport adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.

  • Using a external HD with Airport Extreme

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and am using an external HD with it, mostly for my iTunes collection so I can access it even when I am wireless. I am wondering if the HD needs to be spinning all the the time though, even when I am not using the HD (like when my laptop is off). It seems as though the HD is spinning as long as it is connected to the Airport Extreme. Is there anyway to have it stop spinning when not in use? I have tried using the disconnect feature and although it removes it from my desktop, the HD is still spinning. Please help.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't think it needs to be spinning all the time, others disagree with me, whatever is the correct answer it doesn't matter as there is no way to stop it. Hopefully we will at least have the option at some time in the future to let it spin down.

  • Using an external DAC with Apple TV

How is the sound quality using the Apple TV connected to a home audio system? Is anyone using an external DAC with the Apple TV to up-sample the audio?

The onboard AppleTV DAC will only be used to output analogue audio via the stereo jacks - HDMI or optical out will use the DACs in the TV/processor/receiver anuyway.
Stereo audio files are converted to a PCM bitstream (which will not use a DAC) for output via optical.
Personally I think even lossy MP3/AAC sounds great via optical from AppleTV. My Yamaha DSP won't upsample the PCM bitstream, but frankly upsampling audio isn't going to bring huge sonic benefits as it's only interpolating what isn't there isn't the first place. Granted opinions differ on whether upsampling makes things sound better or not, but you can't reproduce perfectly information you don't have , the interpolation will only be guesswork.
You may want to look at the 2 links here, which are along the lines of using AppleTV and Airport Express in hi-fi setups:

  • Using an external GPS with an iPhone 4S

For improved accuracy, I want to use an external GPS with my iPhone 4S. I have purchases a Dual XGPS150A Bluetooth GPS receiver and successfully paired it with the iPhone. Dual's "GPS Status Tool" app reports the GPS data from the device just fine. So now I want to get other apps like MotionX to use the GPS data from the XGPS150A in preference to the iPhone's own GPS.
Dual's technical support assures me this can only be done by putting the iPhone in Airplane Mode then re-enabling Bluetooth. Well that's a showstopper. However, in another post here, I found this statement from BrettAtBadElph: "As long as you are using an Apple-approved external GPS accessory like the Bad Elf, XGPS150, or GNS, you don't have to worry about configuring the GPS source being used. The iOS device will pick the source with the best accuracy, and shut down the internal receiver to save power."
Is BrettAtBadElph correct? If so, can anyone point me to some documentation?

I've received no responses, nor have I found any difinitive info elsewhere. But I can say that testing this weekend has made it clear that that BradAtBadElph is correct -- MotionX is clearly using the XGPS150A GPS data in favor of the iPhone's native GPS.
Funny aside: Dual's GPS Status Tool app is fairly weak -- it cannot dissplay any GPS data if another GPS-consuming app like MotionX or Waze is in memory.
