Using an external monitor with ibook?

Does anyone know if an "off-the-shelf" ibook will drive a 22" external LCD? Or do you need an extra video card?

I have a similar question. Is there anyway that an ibook G4 can drive a Cinema Display 20". I know that you can hook them up by using a combination of adaptors but given the resolution of the ibook G4 video card, I'm guessing it won't work.
Thanks!

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

  • External monitor with ibook as desktop

Is there a way to close the lid of my ibook and use it as a desktop when I'm at home connected to an external monitor? Does that make sense?

I found the iBook G4 manual and could find nothing referring to the question you have. About the only info I could find sent me to the Mac's built in Help function. Below is the quote from the manual.

  • How do I use an external monitor with my MacBook??

    Hi,
I recently purchased my MacBook, but when I am at home, I want to be able to use my MacBook like a normal computer, by plugging a keyboard, mouse and my existing LCD monitor to it.
What do I need to purchase to enable this and what system settings do I need to adjust to get my monitor to work?
Could I have my laptop closed while i am using my external monitor? How do I do this? I don't want my MacBook open, while I am using my monitor!! Can someone please give me a simple step by step guide on how to turn on and use my laptop which my external monitor plugged in.

  • Using an external monitor with my clamshell

    Hi there,
I was wondering if I can use an external monitor iwith my tangerine clamshell. If so, what adapters do I need to purchase.

I don't think you are able to, the later (firewire) models had composite video out though which may or may not be useful .

  • External monitor with ibook clamshell G3 (single USB)

Hello Everyone and salutations from the world of Medieval Mac!
Well I finally broke down and bought an OSX machine. Since I have a 3 and 1 year old I was limited to a purchase price of 70 dollars so I got a clamshell G3/300mhz ibook off of ebay. Lo and behold there is not external monitor port. I just recently discovered plate armour and regular hygiene (**** plague) so..."Who knew?!?"
Anyhoo is there any way to run an external monitor off of the lonely USB port on this sucker? If so can it go through a USB hub so I can also use a keyboard designed for typing with normal sized hands (maybe I should take off the gauntlets)?

  • Use an external monitor with my MacBook Pro

I have my MacBook Pro (13" Spring 2010) and I would like to extend my desktop over to my Gateway FH2300 however Lion is giving me some issues.
For one after I make my external monitor my primary monitor in the appearnce tab in Settings some apps appear on my MacBook Pro but I can't drag it over to my other dektop because my mouse cursor is confined to that monitor. In Windows 7 my 2 monitors work flaulsly and I can easily drag and work with apps in between both windows.
What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

Remember that your monitors probably aren't the same size.  Look at the placement in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.  Your mouse will only move over the section that overlaps.  Places like the bottom of this sample it won't.

  • Using an external monitor with FCP Studio v. 1.0

I cannot get my external monitor to display my timeline editing window. I have made the right connections, with firewire from Mac to Sony HDV tapedeck, and with HDMI cable from tapedeck to LCD monitor, but the screen remains blank. The external video setting and the video playback setting both have the HDV 1080i options greyed out, so I can't click on them. I can only have 'none', or playback in full screen desktop. How can I activate the play out via the tapedeck to the monitor?

    Nickmarios wrote:
However, if HDV cannot be played out of FCP via firewire, how come I can capture from tape and export back to tape with firewire successfully?
Part of the issue is the Open GOP nature of HDV. Basically, HDV spreads the information for all frames within the time that you've pressed record to the time that you've stopped recording, and then crunches that down. This is way different than other FireWire-supported codecs, like DV, where each frame contains all the information needed by FCP to send a signal out to an external monitor at full resolution.
Sending out a full resolution via FireWire during HDV editing - where, most importantly, you're not obeying the GOP structure - would require fairly intense system resources, since it must reference other frames (sometimes many other frames). That's why you need a dedicated accelerator, like a capture card, to do that and send out a signal. As mentioned, FCP can send out a (very degraded) letterboxed 4:3 signal via FireWire, but it can't send out a full resolution signal.
Capturing, however, is a data transfer and much easier on your system. Open GOP is also the reason that long captures get broken up into individual shots (every time you start/stop recording).
Finally, as Shane mentions, the conform that FCP does prior to Print to Video means that FCP converts your timeline to abide by the (Open GOP) structure of HDV. As you've witnessed, that takes a fair amount of time.

  • How do I use two external monitors with my MacBook Pro?

I have a 21" monitor and a 20" TV capable of VGA connection, and my MacBooks model is 5,4 (late 2009), so it only has one mini display port. I have a VGA to mini display connector and use it lots. I work on multiple projects at once, and I'd like to be able to use three screens at once... any suggestions?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Can I use 2 external monitors with Satellite M70?

Is there any chance to connect to PC (M70-131) 2 outer monitors? Triyng to do this via video splitter I have only 2 monitor configuration mode, instead of 3 as it should be.

You own a VGA splitter. This device can only copy the SAME image on two monitors.
    but,...
you want to have totally three (3) independent pictures produced by your notebook.
Yes, that's possible. You will only need to purchase an USB Video Adaptor for your notebook (or desktop).
They are not very expensive (around 100 Euro) and allow you to do amazing things with your applications.
Here is a link of such a device (This picture is meant as an EXAMPLE ONLY, it might not be the BEST device to buy for your requirements).

  • Can macbookpro be used with the lid closed while using multiple external monitors

I want to use macbook pro with external monitors and be able to close the lid on the laptop, but can't figure out how to make that works with multiple monitors.  I currently use two external monitors with the laptop monitor as my third.  All are independent monitors and I accomplish this using the matrox diamond bvu-195 product (one for each external monitor).  Now I would like to add a third external monitor and be able to close the laptop lid - kind of like you would do with a docking station for a Windows laptop.  Anyone have any suggestions as to how to accomplish this?

Connecting your present two external displays via USB has left your MBP's Mini-DisplayPort available for a third. Depending on the monitor's available inputs, buy a mini-Displayport-to-VGA, MDP-to-DVI, or MDP-to-HDMI adapter and the appropriate cable to make the connection. I would expect that adding a third monitor to your GPU's workload might cause your already slow USB-connected monitors to slow down farther, but you'll have to see whether that's true and, if so, how tolerable it is in your work.
As for what will happen when you close the built-in display, I suspect that what happens if you do that now will continue to happen if you do it with a third monitor connected. If you can now close the display and run the machine in closed-clamshell mode, I expect you'll still be able to do so after adding the third external screen.
