Using an external projector

My son was just given a G4 15" PowerBook and is trying to hook it up to a projector. he has all of the necessary cables but can't get the image to appear on the screen.
On his Windows laptop there was a function key that would switch the image from the laptop display to an external display. is there such a key function on the PowerBook? How do you get the image to show on a projector?
Thanks,
David

sydneystephen has the correct answer for the function key. The Mac equivalent of that Windows key is F7. You can tell because the F7 key has dual-monitor icon on it.
joeuu's first answer tells you how to use the OS to determine how multiple monitors are set up. His second answer, on the other hand, is completely unusable and answers something that isn't being asked here.
Troubleshooting a projector should be exactly the same as troubleshooting any external monitor, because a projector is merely seen as another monitor
If you don't see an image upon plugging it in, you follow sydneystephen's instructions, and either under the Displays icon on the menu bar or in the Displays system preference you want to look for "Detect Displays" and click it. That should cause the projector to be recognized.
If you still don't see anything and the cable connection is good, then it may be an issue with the resolution and refresh rate specified for the external display. Check the projector's manual and enter something that it supports. The F7 dual-monitor key should not be the issue, although it doesn't hurt to press it. The key is actually meant to switch between extended desktop and mirror modes, meaning that either way, there should be an image on both the laptop and projector already.

  • When using an external projector, the only thing that shows up on the screen is my desktop screen

When I'm presenting using an external projector, the only thing that shows up on the view screen is my desktop screen.  It will also display a powerpoint file, but only in slide show mode.  No other files (word, excel, etc) or safari will display.  How can I get what I see on my computer screen to show up on the external screen?

Check out this support site about using two monitors, since that's what you're doing when you're projecting:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202351
You can either set it to "mirror" or arrange the monitors side by side. Then when you want to show the working window on your projector slide it in the direction you set as the second monitor. Many teachers will do this to show a video or powerpoint to their class while working on another document or answering emails.

  • T61 freezes when using an external projector

My T61 freezes immediately when I plug it into an external projector.  Any suggestions?

    Try the following steps first:
    1) Make sure the cables are connected properly.
    2) Test the external video port with another external monitor (to make  sure this is not a compatibility issue)
    3) Check to ensure that  the latest video driver and BIOS are installed
If your unit is still freezing up after doing all the steps above, call tech support to report systemboard issues.
    Hope this helps.

  • External Projector for Slide presentation on iPhoto 09

I need assistance in using an external projector for a slide presentation of my pictures. I can not get the pictures to project. I can do Keynote presentations with no problems with the same settings. thank you for your help...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Alejandro,
iPhoto does not support slideshow play back on a secondary display like keynote does. iPhoto always displays the slideshow on the primary display. There are a few ways you can get around this:
1.) Export your slideshow as a Quicktime Movie and play it in Quicktime or iTunes
-- File > Export > Slideshow -- Check off "Display" and "Automatically send slideshow to iTunes"
-- Once your slideshow (now a movie) is in iTunes you can move itunes to your second display (or projector) and then play
2.) Change the primary display from the computer display to the projector
-- You can tell your computer to display on the projector first by changing your display preferences
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301408#3
-- Go to Apple > System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement > Drag the small white bar from the current display (which is your computer) to the secondary display (which is your projector)
    -- Now play your slideshow
3.) Set your computer to use mirroring ( I don't like this option because you lose your primary display for the duration of the slideshow
    -- Go to Apple > System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement >Mirror
    -- Now play your slideshow
    Hope that helps!

  • HT201300 What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch early 2011 model to an external projector so it will display the computer screen image through the projector?

What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch, early 2011 model to an external projector so the project displays the image on the computer screen?

You will need a cable or adapter with a minidisplay connection for the MBP.  That will be inserted in the Thunderbolt port.  The other end is dependent upon the connections of the projector which you have not listed.
    Ciao.

  • 10.5.2 won't send signal to external projector

Help! I do speaking engagements for a living and just updated to 10.5.2. When I hook an external projector to the computer (DVI to VGA) my MacBook Pro does see the external projector, but will not send a signal to it. It worked yesterday, but as soon as I upgraded it no longer works. We tried a second Mac running 10.5.1 and it worked fine.
I have an engagement Wednesday evening and MUST have this fixed or I will be forced to buy a new computer. Don't have system disks to go backwards with updates. Anybody have any ideas? What a nightmare. I'm desperate to have a computer that will send a video signal out. It sees a monitor, but doesn't see the projector.

    Howdy chadnodoubt,
If you are having an issue with your external display not performing as expected when connected with your MacBook Pro, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Difficulty in connecting external projector to Macbook Air

I have an external projector I'm connecting to my Macbook Air (OSX 10.7.2) via mini display port to VGA adapter.  With projector on and ad adapter plugged into the macbook air, I see the screen flash blue, but can't force the external dispaly to be recognized.  Under system preferences, displays, I am hitting detect displays, and still nothing.  I have gotten the plug-n-play capability to work before using the adapter, but even after system reboot, I can't get it to work.  Any suggestions?

    Hi vvarruunn,
In the display system preference pane, click the 'show displays in the menu bar'. This will put a monitor in your menu bar.. Can you see your external monitor listed here?

  • 10.8.1 causing external projector to go to sleep

I rencently updated to Mac OS X 10.8.1 on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro and I'm experiencing an issue with external projectors going to sleep after just a few minutes of use.
I've been able to reproduce the issue with multiple projectors, multiple VGA cables, multiple Mini Display Port->VGA adapters and multiple MacBook Pros (both running 10.8.1).
I didn't experience the problem at any time prior to the 10.8.1 update, including while I was running 10.8(.0) - this issue is new to me since I upgraded to 10.8.1.
    Here's what happens:
I connect a projector to my MacBook Pro using a standard VGA cable and Mini Display Port->VGA adapter. I'm using the same cable and adapter that I've been using for over a year.
After 5-10 minutes of use, the projector turns off (or goes into standby mode). I've tried this with two different projectors and the behavior is the same for both. The Mac does not go sleep in any way, only the projector is affected.
It doesn't matter if I am mirroring or not mirroring my displays - it happens either way.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    -mike

Just a quick update - turns out the problem had nothing to do with my MacBook Pro, the Mini Display Port->VGA adapter, VGA cable, or project - it was a faulty uninteruptible power supply (UPS) that the projector(s) were plugged into. The UPS is faulty and is having frequent power blinks - which caused the projector(s) to turn off, then back on again...
    Thanks,
    -mike

Expanding on what deggie said, with an iPad 1 the app you're using must support video out. Only the iPad 2 can mirror the screen. The apps included with the iPad that output to external monitors are given here:

For third-party apps, consult the app's documentation or contact the developer.

  • External projector and F7

    hi,
I'm using my macbook almost daily with Keynote and an external projector. Sometimes i also use the F7 button to synchronize views. It worked perfectly on Tiger; it doesn't work perfectly after upgrading to Leopard. Keynote still works fine, but this is what happens now: when I want to show something else, eg a Safari or Quicktime window, I can press the F7 button and the Safari window will appear on the wall; but after pressing F7 again, the resolution is set proper again, but the Safari window (and all the other opened windows as well) still remains visible on the wall, it won't come back to the macbook screen. I have to drag the window from the projected image to the macbook screen, using the mouse. (hope you understand, it's quite hard for me to explain this in English)
Can I change this? I'm thinking of going back to Tiger again...
    grtz, Jan (Belgium)

    thank you for your answer,
it's a usefull trick; i didn't know this "H" function; i'll be probably use it.
But it's not exactly the problem, so i try again:
when i connect my macbook to the projector, the audience sees nothing but the classic apple desktop picture; no symbols or icons or windows. Using Tiger, i could show instantly anything i wanted, using F7, and let it disseapear again, using F7 again. I have a rather interactive dialogue with the audience; so, before the presentation, I mostly don't exactly know what i will show.
Leopard doesn't allow me to do this like Tiger did: the F7 button (or any other way to start mirroring screens) shows the desktop as i see it on the macbook, so that's allright; and it goes wrong when i press F7 again, as I explained before. I think it's a bug in Leopard, that's why I describe the problem in the 'home' apple discussions. I've been waiting for the updates, but untill now it didn't change.
    (thanx again)

  • Pink hue on external projectors

I have searched throughout this forum and cannot find any suggestions. Please guide me.
I have found recently that when I plug into external projectors I get a pink hue. It happens on virtually all projectors I use now.
Originally, it worked fine. I am wondering if my upgrade to Mac OS X is the culprit. I cannot be sure, but I believe that it began after my upgrade. It happened a couple of times before the upgrade now everytime since.

Any solution to this problem yet?

  • How can I view an ibook on an external projector?

I am trying to project an ibook on an external projector. The projector will only display my desktop. Is there a setting to make this happen? I also have the same problem projecting a video from an external usb drive, and not sure how to solve this problem

Agreed — reading books on an iPhone or iPod is just too hard. The iPad is ideal for it, and so much more versatile than a Kindle or a Nook (but more expensive too, of course).
My wife made noises for several months about wanting an iPad to replace her creaky old Dell desktop computer, but I convinced her that was a bad idea: no real keyboard to type on, no familiar Windoze apps available, etc. etc. But she was crestfallen: she really seemed to like the idea of the iPad, even if she had to keep using the Dell. So a couple of weeks ago I took her to look at iPads, and I told her "Don't think of it as a computer. Think of it as a toy." Not in any disparaging sense, but in the sense of something to add pleasure to her life without needing to justify itself as a serious tool. That immediately convinced her to let me get her one (which I was going to do anyway, but this way she feels better about it!) She LOVES the iPad and, being a librarian, she's taken advantage of it to borrow e-books electronically from libraries and download free public-domain books from many available sources — things that are somewhat harder to do on a Mac. And she can read email, news, books, surf the web, and keep up with all her Facebook friends wherever she is, including places where she'd never bring a notebook computer, even a little MacBook Air. So she's still beating her head aganst the Dell in her home office, but at least now she has an alternative to it for the fun, relaxing stuff and can do it anywhere.
I also got an iPad myself, for much the same uses (except Facebook, which drives me nuts), and now my MBP spends a lot more of its time deskbound than it used to.
