Using an iBook G4 to fix an iMac G3?

Long time Mac user; first time severe kernel panic experiencer.
I have a Flower Power iMac G3 600 SE running OS 10.3.9 who kernel panics on startup, due to an invalid B-Tree node size. (I can't make it to the OS X welcome screen before she panics).
I ordered DiskWarrior 4 from the online Apple Store, after confirming the software's system requirements with a sales associate. DiskWarrior arrived today; it's 4.1.1. Possibly will not do me good because...
Package says: "Starting up from the included DiskWarrior disc requires a G4 867 MHz Mac or better with DVD drive, built-in FireWire, and a minimum of 512 MB RAM. To install, you must have a G3 or better Mac and be started from Mac OS 10.3.9 or later."
(The system requirements for DiskWarrior on the Apple web site said you needed 10.3.9 or later, G3 minimum processor, and a CD-ROM drive.)
I have access to an iBook G4 1.33 GHz with a DVD drive, running 10.4.11.
I also have a 1TB external FireWire drive--bought a few months ago to use as my iMac external hard drive--with plenty of space to spare.
Is it possible to install DiskWarrior 4.1.1 on the iBook (or the FireWire drive), boot the G3 as a target disk, and do the repairs on the G3 disk that way?
I want to say yes, but I'm leery because I tried running the Panther install disc for fun over the weekend, and it didn't acknowledge the G3's hard drive as a destination drive. Though it did recognize the hard drive when I ran Disk Utility from the CD (where I got the "invalid B-tree node" error). I can also boot into the terminal to read the panic code (where I got the first indication that I had a hard drive issue).
Thanks bunches!

You have a few options.
You can install Mac OS X Panther on that external FireWire drive, boot from it, run Software Update to get it to 10.3.9, install DiskWarrior, and run DiskWarrior to repair the damage on the internal drive.
Or you can install DiskWarrior on the iBook. Start up the iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Connect it to the iBook with a FireWire cable. The iMac's internal drive should show up as an external drive on the iBook's desktop. Run DiskWarrior to repair the damage on the iMac's internal drive. While doing the repair, turn off background processes such as screen savers, connect the iBook to the power adapter, and set the iBook NOT to go to sleep. And don't run other apps.
Alternately, do the same FireWire Target Disk Mode procedure without installing DiskWarrior on the iBook. Restart the iBook from the DiskWarrior disc, and repair the damage on the iMac's internal drive. This option may seem to be the easiest, but DiskWarrior will run slower when booted off an optical disc (and these repairs can take a long time).
because I tried running the Panther install disc for fun over the weekend, and it didn't acknowledge the G3's hard drive as a destination drive.
That is most likely because the version of Mac OS X Panther on the installer disc is earlier than the version you have installed. If you would have clicked on the Options button and select either +Archive and Install+ or +Erase and Install+ (instead of the default Upgrade install), I think you could have selected the internal drive as the target.

Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Insert the power cable back in the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the problem 90% of the time. If no luck, see #C12 in this great support document by Pondini:

  • Use my ibook g3 as a "print server"

Im interested in knowing if I can use my ibook g3 to be my networks print server.
As in hooking up ibook g3 to my network, then hooking up my printer to the ibook, and then print through it from my macbook. Does this make any sense? I hope it does. If this is possible please provide me with details on how to do this. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to - I'm doing a similar thing but using my iMac as the 'print server' so that I can print from my iBook over the wireless network.
Go to Sharing in System Preferences and tick the box for Printer Sharing. It should now be set up automatically, but you can check the printer is being shared in the Printer system preference.
(The iBook will need to be on all the time if you want to always be able to print - it can't be sleeping).
The printer should show up under 'Shared Printers' in the options for printing when you want to print on your MacBook (at least it does in 10.4, I've not upgraded to 10.5 yet so I don't know if it's different).

  • This computer's local hostname is already in use. How can I fix this?

Almost every day the following message appears in a pop up box.
This computer's local hostname "my-iMac-6.local"  is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "my-iMac-7.local"
The numbers do not correspond to those in the name in the Security preferences.
I preformed the "fix" described in the discussion.apple.com/messages---/messageID=9113111.
Set "iPv6" from "Automatically" to "Off" in both Airport and Ethernet.
That is apparently not the answer either.
There is only one computer in my house with the name shown in the message.
My wife's iMac has her name in it. Mine has my name in it.
    How can I fix this?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

This seems to be a DHCP issue when the lease is renewed
When the computer reconnects (renews the lease) it believes its own computer name "already has been taken" so because the router has retained it on the local network so your computer inserts the after its computer name a
"-2" then a  "-3" then "-4" etc. (the mac needs to do this and does so by default to ensure and create its own unique name on the local network)
-> this appears to be a delay / hangover on the router (AE or TC) when using DHCP
have seen a fix which only requires you set your computer with a fixed IP address
(can be EITHER reserved on the router OR set on the computer itself in network settings)
Router (AE or TC) Airport Utility 5.6 / Internet tab / DHCP button / click the "+" button & you reserve the computer's IP address by EITHER its MAC address (= shown in SysPrefs/Network/Advanced/Hardware) OR a DHCP client id (which you choose yourself) & enter exactly the same identical passphrase on the computer in sysprefs/network/advanced/DHCP(->set ro "using DHCP") shows textbox to enter the DHCP id
THEN apply with Update button  (Router restarts)
Computer itself - under sysprefs /  network  ->  Configure IPv4 to "Using DHCP with Manual Address" (will autofill from DHCP) check correct local IP address of computer is set & click Apply OR "Manual Address & manually enter the settings for local IP Address of computer / subnet mask / router's Ip address / DNS server's IP address / (DNS) Search Domain (optional)
Since setting static address this problem has not re-occurred.

You have a disc inside your optical drive.
Not sure what they mean by volume still in use, this apparentely is keeping me from burning info such a pictures and or video's,

    Remove the extra disc.
    My answers are basic because:
You never told us which model iMac you have?
How you are burning?  Through iMac?  External burner?
Which OS you are currently using?

Do I need an Air Port Base station or a router? After I set up everything on my mac mini, what steps do I need to follow on the iBook to get Internet access?
The AirPort base station is a router. You are not limited to AirPort base stations as non-Apple 802.11g routers (like those from Belkin, D-Link, or Linksys) will work just as well. Using a router, your network configuration would be something like the following:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] router > (wireless) > wireless computers.
The set up for both computers, to access the router, would basically be the same.
To setup AirPort for High-Speed Cable Internet connectivity:
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
    - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • Can a book created with iBooks Author be distributed on iMac's running Leopard OS?

I am a high school computer teacher and I am creating a textbook for the courses I teach using iBooks Author. I have iMacs in my lab running OS X Leopard. With budget cuts and layoffs looming, there is no possibility whatsoever of upgrading to a newer operating system. Will I be able to distribute my textbook to the macs in my lab? If so, would I use iBooks or another EReader application? Or, am I wasting my time trying to create this resource for my kids? Thank You !

    iBooks Author requires Lion.
But when you say 'distribute' if you mean 'read' the final output on your computer....no, sorry.
Use Pages and output as PDF or epub and then use the OS X Kindle Reader...

  • Tiger onto Lacie d2 from ibook then boot to my iMac G5?

My iMac G5 second gen wont start up after a erase and install to factory and then i installed Tiger upgrade. Apple screen appears and then after about a minute a really choppy, what looks to be a blue screen comes up and goes right to a ambient black. I still see my pixel thats dead though and can hold option on startup and the chooser for startup disk shows. Sorry for getting of my ? but will my firewire disk start even Tiger came of Ibook
Thanks to anyone who could help
    -Rubs

From your post title, it sounds like you installed Tiger onto an external FireWire disk from your iBook, then tried booting this FireWire disk on your iMac, is that correct? If that is the case, your computer won't be able to boot from the FireWire disk, because the G5 processor in the iMac uses a slightly different code than the iBook's G3 or G4 processor. You can still use the iBook's installer CD or DVD on the iMac, and Tiger should install fine, because it will install the software for G5 based computers.

  • I Fixed my iMac slow internet connection

I will share with you how I fixed my iMac slow internet connection and frequently lost connection.  At first, I thought it was the Airport but then it wasn't the case.  I also had a Dell laptop in the same basement and it was running as fast as I expected.  Here are the steps:
1/ Open Airport link on the top right window  > Open Network Preferences
    2/
Click + to create new Network Name and Security, I chose WPA personal - less security than the WPA2- that is why it runs faster.
3/ Go mack to step 1 and select your new network name > Apply.
May iMac is now connecting to internet as fast as I would expected.
    Good luck

My iMac internet connection is not faster but as fast as it used to be.  I was using WPA2 and it was really good for a year and then I got disconnected or very slow.  So I created the new network bearing the same old name but use WPA and did not delete the old one, some how everything is back to normal.

I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?

  • Is there any way to use a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac as an external screen for an early 2011 MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
I'm trying to work out if there is any way that I can use my late 2009 21.5 inch iMac (running OS X 10.6.8; mindisplay port) as an external or second monitor when connected to my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8; thunderbolt).
From what I've read online, I gather that I cannot simply connect the two with a minidisplay port to thunderbolt cable, as the iMac does not support target display mode. I know I can 'share screens', but this doesn't give me much of an improvement on size compared to just using my MacBook.
Are there any other potential work arounds I might have missed? Any suggestions (or even conclusive answers to suggest I'm wasting my time by continuing to think about it!) would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

Sorry but no, you are asking about Target Display Mode and the 2009/2010 21.5" iMacs did not support that, only the 27" iMacs did. You can read up on TDM in Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
