Using an iMac and mac air together for iPhoto editing and organisation
I want my iMac and macair to be synced for iPhoto purposes.
I followed this thread and have saved my iPhoto library from the iMac to an external drive.
I assume I can plug the drive into the macair and make changes. Or is it intended that I copy the drive to the macair?
I am having difficulty understanding how the sync of changes on the macair will be reflected on the iMac?

iTunes will always sync with the last iPhoto library that has been used on the computer. If you make sure, that the drive has been connected, before you launch iTunes, it will work, like Old Toad said.
Also, if I do it this way doesn't it become vulnerable due to not being connected at all times to time machine?
if you use the drive with the library the mainly on your iMac, you could exclude it from the TimeMachine backup of your Laptop. Keep it connected to the iMac, when you are not using it on the LapTop.
What would be the process if I only wanted to do this periodically and wanted to keep the main library on the iMac. Could I work on the drive on the macair and then save it back to the iMac? How do I do that without duplicating the files? If I just select copy and paste, will it only overwrite the changed files?
You would have to copy the entire library back and forth again and again, or use iPhoto Library Manager, to merge the changes into the library on the iMac. It would not be an easy workflow.

I may buy a Mac Mini in addition to my iMac 27" (Mid 2011), mostly so that I can use it for slide show presentations via a digital projector. But I don't have a separate monitor (or suitable TV), so I wouldn't be able to use the Mac Mini other than with a projector. Not a good idea. So I backed away a bit.
TDM Mode
Then I found that I could use an iMac screen as a monitor if I connect the two via a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable in Target Display Mode, TDM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924). A short cable costs $35.
Then I thought about those times when Photoshop is tying up my computer for hours while I batch process heaps of images (you can't use Photoshop while it is batch processing), and I wondered: why not jump across to the Mac Mini during those times?
I store all my data on external firewire drives. Nothing on the OSX drives. This leads me to a few questions. Assume I have the Mac Mini connected to my iMac in TDM via a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable.

What is the best way of being able to access my data files (on external firewire drives connected to the iMac) via the Mac Mini? A scenario might be:
I've started a batch process on the iMac which ties up Photoshop and much ties up;
I switch the screen to display the Mac Mini;
I want to access my data on the firewire drives, drives that the iMac is already accessing.

Can I use the thunderbolt connection to not only transfer screen data, but ordinary data?

It appears that I cannot share documents between my iMacs and and Mac air using icloud without first opening document in and IOS device. Is this true. If so, then icould is petty much worthless for me, especially since idisk will be discontinued next year.

iwork on iOS uses different file formats ( *.tef ) then iwork09 on Mac ( *.key , *. number , *.page ).
Uploaded documents to icloud.com must first be updated to the *.tef format and then re-written to the cloud system. The online service behind the iwork web-app does the re-conversion to Mac formats, pdf or Microsoft office. All that is happening "in the cloud", not on your Mac as he misses the engine to do the transcoding from the *.tef to the other formats. Mac simply does not know what *.tef is. -
Hello, I use MAC AIR OSX 10.6.8 and have Adobe CS2, that I was using 2 years ago on my older computer. I stopped using it because it would close down in the middle of work. Now I would like to reinstall it on the MacAir but I can not get it working. It tells Adobe doesnT support my System. But I can not update my old version or activate it. What can I do?

If the problem is that you already installed cs2, but it won't activate, that's because adobe took the activation servers offline for some older adobe products such as cs2.

It's the Mac book air good for graphic design and video editing ?
I'm into graphic design for clothing logos etc. and I'm a photographer my question is, is the Mac book air good for these things?
ideally a 15" would be best for same, as referring to the 15" macbook Pro.
For a photographer, which I used to be long ago, either the Air or Pro are close in form factor for travel with only one moving part, and SSD.
The retina display in combination with the 15" would be idea as best choice for photo editing and graphic design.

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion after purchasing Apple TV yesterday from Best Buy.
I have signed in on the same wi-fi network (comcast 30mbps)
I was able to see photos from my wifes Iphone but not my IMac or Mac Air
Both computers connect but I am only getting audio.
I updated software on Apple TV
I shut everything down and reset my router. My Mac Air 13" 2012 was able to see the desk top but not anything that I was doing and then it disconnected.
I also tested the internet speed on the Apple TV but it just told me it was finished. (no results)WEP as a security measure is laughable nowadays. Even a kindergarten kid with a netbook can crack the password in a few minutes. Try using WPA2 if available on the device. And the Macs will be quite happy connecting with that protocol.

Yes, you can use the 27" as a monitor with Target display mode. Just attach the two with a Thunderbolt cable and press Command F2 on the iMac. It will become a secondary monitor for the MBair.

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions. -
My Mac air keeps on loosing wifi and when I want to switch it on it says "wifi hardware not installed" After about 5 minutes the wifi is back on, but only for about 10 minutes before loosing signal again. This is really frustrating.
I am also having the same problem.. Its too much annoying and its unfortunate nobody at apple support has anyclue of what is happening?

When I bought my Mac they gave me a free hp printer. My mac is a 10.7 and the printer is for 10.6 and below.... so why did they give me this printer? Can I use it somehow or should I ask for a different one that is compatible with my computer?

No, that's not necessary.
You Mac most likely sat in inventory before it was sold so the latest drivers were not installed.

How do I use my IMac as a second moniter for my Macbook Pro?
Okay, So I would like to use my IMac as a monitor for my mbp. The IMac is a 2010 model and the Macbook is 2012 (Not the retina).
I'm a music producer and I'm sick of having to switch devices so I just want to keep all my stuff on the macbook but the screens way too small.
What I want to do is use the mbp screen with the mixer section of logic as well as use the IMac as a second moniter with the arrange screen.
Is it possible to do this with an ethernet cable?

You have to purchase a Mini DisplayPort cable (Ethernet won't work, as this is not designed as a video cable to connect Macs), and then, press Command and F2 keys on the iMac.

my airport time capsule will no longer allow our iPhones or vizio smart tvs to connect to it, though my iPad air mac mini and mac air connect fine. Why is this? does a recent software update have anything to do with it?
What model is your TC? What is the firmware?
I recommend you do a factory reset and use short names.. not apple recommended names.
Short.. 2-20 characters .. less than 10 even better.
No spaces.
Pure alphanumeric.
Set fixed channels for 2.4ghz wireless.. test with 11, 6, 1 at least.
That often helps.. if not and is old, ie Gen1-4 go back to 7.6.1 firmware which is far more solid.
