Using an iMac as a monitor.

Hi all.
It is possible to utilize an iMac 24 as a monitor for a MacPro?
Thanks.

OK. I give a try to ScreenRecycler.
I hoped that some direct connection would work, but..
Thanks.
I'll post here my results as soon as I try it.

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

Can I use my iMac as a monitor for a PC? If  yes, how?

That is called Target Display Mode and you are lucky it's supported in the late 2009 & 2010 27" iMacs. Apple had directions in:

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • Using new iMac as a monitor for PC Laptop

    Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.
    M.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

  • Use 2008 iMac as second monitor for pc laptop

I have a 2008 iMac and wish to use it as a second monitor for my wife's laptop.  I originally bought a mini display port to vga adaptor cable and realized that it would not work.  I have to go back and buy the mini DVI to vga adapter cable to use it.  But in scouring the google links - I saw that it might not work.  It had said for 2011 and above it might, but did not mention earlier models.  I could use some direction.  If it not possible, I would rather not go and buy a new cable and try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks  .

You need to set up Virtual Network Computing.

  • Using my iMac as a monitor for Mac mini.

I'd like to use my mid 2010 27" iMac as a monitor for my Mac mini. Is this possible with thunderbolt?

You'll use the thunderbolt port on your mini and connect to the mini display port on the iMac. use a mini display to mini display cable.

  • Can I use 20" iMac as a monitor for an airbook

i have an iMac and an air book. Now that I am using the two devices I am fed up of copying the data from the airbook to the iMac. Simple solution appears to be that I use the iMac as a display for the airbook. My IMac is over a year old.

Well that was helpful.  So having trawled these discussions it appears that:
    A) the iMac I have doesn't have a video input capability, so it can't be a dumb monitor
    B) the iMac could connect to my air book over a network connection using JollyfastVNC software on the imac and screen recycler on the airbook.
So I will try the recycler option over wireless and over a cabled connection and see how cumbersome it is to use.

  • Can I use my iMac as a monitor to run the new HP Stream Mini?

Obviousy, I can install Windows 8 or possibly Windows 10 with a bootable disk or as a virtual machine. I might need to run windows as part of a side job. My neighbor is about to get the new HP Stream Mini which of course needs a monitor. Rather than go through the whole install/partition ordeal, I was wondering if I could hook up this Mini to my iMac, the iMac being the monitor? Yes/No?
    thanks, Bill

Depends on your model & the connections. Read up on Target display mode…

It's not a great solution since OS X is still running underneath (powering 2 computers to only control 1).
You may find that once the PC is setup you can use RDP to share the screen & control it from the Mac if they are on the same network.

  • Can i use my imac as a monitor

I have an old imac SE dvd model circa 2001. Can i use it as a monitor with a mac mini

In theory and in a way yes, using Firewire Target Disk Mode (FWTDM) on the Mac mini and use that as your startup drive on a compatible iMac(check the link).
You would need a keyboard to start the Mac mini off in FWTDM and you would still be using the iMac specs, so it would still be your iMac's CPU and memory!
So the actual answer is in fact no as you would only be using the Mac mini's HDD and not much else.

  • Use dead iMac Display as monitor?

I have a dead iMac (mobo fried) and was wondering if there is any way I can extract the display panel, and use either a bought or DIY/hacked adapter to use it as a standard monitor.

This topic has been well-played here; the replies

I'm not an expert, only having owned, repaired &
donated to charities, some 140 Macintoshes.
And I've not been heavily into dissecting my four
iMac G4 computers with 17" LCD displays. But
I do know the computer with a failed logicboard
will not support the display; the graphics or video
processor is integrated, and the panel has only
a few of the necessary support circuits with it
above the chrome arm in the panel's case.
There are a few ways of integrating a different
fully self-contained display into the dead iMac
case and perhaps use the existing LCD or an
other LCD and put additional circuitry into the
base of the iMac G4 instead of the dead LB.
And the earlier reply was essentially spot-on.

Later G5 & Intel-based iMac cases could be
used, empty, to support an entire complete
display of similar size; and the circuits likely
would fit if the case had room enough, empty.
An apology would be in order, if you came in
to a retail establishment and talked to a tech
with a determined to fail attitude like that.
    Good luck & happy computing!
    {edited to add correct iMac G4 forum link}
My attitude was like that because i know what I am talking about. I now it is not a display. That is what bugged me. he talked to me like I had no idea what I am talking about. he also did not provide an answer like you that was well thought out and seemingly well researched, he said "I guess." I will, and have accepted, that this is not really possible. It was not his answer, it was his attitude towards the question. and just a BTW, I am talking about the intel imac. The white one, not the g4.
