Using an iMac with a mac pro laptop

I have a 24 inch iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo which I find great for my photographs with Aperture. I am looking at a MacBook Pro to carry with me. My question is can I connect the MacBook Pro to the iMac in order to use its large screen?
Thanks

Use ScreenRecycler or a VNC connection.

you're allowed two concurrent installations/activations.  if your laptop install will be your 2nd, just download the cc app to your laptop and start installing your apps, https://creative.adobe.com/

  • Using a G5 with a Mac Pro

Hi, I need a bit of advice please. I’ve just bought a new Mac Pro. I’ve been using a G5 for the past 5 years but decided to upgrade and use the Mac pro solely for high end applications such as Final Cut Pro and a number of other editing applications. I want to be able to access my old G5 in conjunction with the new system as I have so much stuff on it. What’s the best way to have the two running together? I heard via firewire might be a good idea? I also heard you can switch between systems if you have two monitors and a special switch?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well, there are other options if all you want to do is access files. You can put the G5 into Target Disk Mode to access the system drive (other drives you may have would not be accessible.) Then there is ad hoc networking using IP over FireWire. Neither of these would be any faster than Gigabit Ethernet unless run over FW800.
The fastest alternative is to put the G5's drive(s) in your Mac Pro.

  • Using web cam with a Mac Pro

Hey All... Was hoping to get some pointers on get a web cam working on a mac pro so that I can use jabber to video chat from it. Any special brands that I would look at? Today at the local computer store looked like everything said yes to Windows but nothing mentioned OSX compatibility... Thanks for any posters

I read recently that these USB video class devices now all work with OS X (though perhaps only with 10.4.10 or later) without the need for any software to make them work in iChat and PhotoBooth and apps like that.
Of those cameras it seemed to me that the Microsoft Xbox Live Vision was both the cheapest and best looking so I bought one.
It works perfectly and quite surprisingly doesn't look too bad either (the 'XBOX 360' logo is almost invisible). I was hoping to get a real iSight and was even prepared to pay the $300 they seem to go for these days but at the time I decided to get one I couldn't find any on Ebay or Amazon. I'd recommend the Xbox camera, it's easily good enough.
Having said that, I don't think I've heard of any apps that enable video chat through Jabber with OS X (or any other OS from memory). Which app were you going to use? Please enlighten me...

  • Can I use Thunderbolt Display with 2007 Mac Pro?

I dropped my 30" Cinema Display and it's totaled.
I have a number of newer systems with Thunderbolt Displays.
Can I get a video card? to put in my 2007 Mac Pro Quad Core that will allow me to use the Thunderbolt display? If not, what should I do short of finding a replacement 30" Cinema Display?
    Thank you!

Shoot. I was afraid of that. Have you ever done anything so stupid!!!?
Thanks so much for the response. I'll try to dig another up. An expensive klutz move.

  • Can I use iphone earbuds with a mac pro tower? And with an extension cord?

I also need to use an extension cable because of my standing desk (tower is on the floor). I get confused with the 2-band jack, the 3-band jack, etc. I haven't been successful using a regular, radio shack type of headphone extension cord. Salesmen give me a blank stare when I try to explain that I have iphone earbuds with a 3-band jack and that it doesn't work with a regular extension cord. It's like I'm speaking Swahili.

You can't using 4-band iPhone earphone with Mac Pro.
You need to get 3-band earphone and extension cable.
I've been using iPod shuffle's earphone with extension cable osn it works well.

  • Can i use my iphone with a mac pro to connect to the internet?

it said on the mac page that you could connect to your phone with the built in bluetooth and then connect to the wireless network to access the internet. is this true or what?

    is this true or what?
Yes, but not with an iPhone. The iPhone's Bluetooth connection can only be used with a headset at this time.

  • HT1175 Using G-Raid to backup iMac and Mac Pro laptop

Has anyone atttempted to backup both machines to a Hitachi G-Raid with one partition? If they have, was it by direct USB 2.0 wire  using AirPort Express for the Mac Pro and direct fire wire to the iMAC?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

To backup in the future requires hooking up each machine individually and using TM.
To do it that way, yes, but that's not your best bet.
First, having both sets of backups made directly, in the same partition, may present problems later on. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #4 for details.
Second, the inconvenience of switching back and forth means both Macs won't get regular backups.  If you do switch frequently, there's the risk of damaging a port or plug.
Your best bet is to partition the drive.  Continue backing-up the iMac to one partition directly.  Leave the drive connected to the iMac, and back the laptop up to the other partition via your network.   See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #33 for details, and #22 for setup instructions.  That way, both will be backed-up hourly, as long as they're awake and the laptop is in range of your network.
Will my original question of using AirPort Express work
No.  You cannot connect a drive to an Airport Express's USB port, only a printer.

  • Hot Synch does not work, Treo 755p, USB, 17" Mac Pro Laptop, even with RevD installed and Allow other HotSynch applications preference check box checked

    Hi,
I am a long time Palm enthusiast who is frustrated.  No more Palm products for me or anyone I speak to until I solve this problem.  Someone at Palm should be paying attention to their long time cusotmers.  I bought Palms in 2002 and 2003.
The support literature coming with two Treo 755p that I bought was so poor that never saw the fine print that there was three months of support if I registered the devices.  The registration page does not let me register.  All the fields are ghosted after I put in the serial number.  I bought one in June 2008 and the other in early 2008.  So never registered and can get no help from Palm now it seems.
So beside that gripe below is the problem issue info.
I can't get a Verizon Treo 755p to USB cable Hot Synch with my daughters 17" Mac Pro Laptop.  It is using OS 10.5x  She lives in another city so I am trouble shooting this remotely.
Did - Revd Palm upgrage has been installed.
    PalmDesktopMac421Revd.dmg (17MB)

Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.
That process worked however on my own Treo 755p Verizon as below:
After much work, hours over several months, I got my my Treo 755p Verizon to Hot Synch with a QuickSilver desk top Mac running os 10.5x.
    Did the RevD upgrade.
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.   Otherwise the Wireless Synch feature prevents a Hot Synch.
Once those both were done than Hot Synch works fine, and Wireless Synch works fine and does not interfere.
The Wireless on both PDAs is scheduled to be removed on both Treos due the economy on Feb. 4th, so I would like the HotSynch to be working so her Treo is backed up.
Thanks so much to anyone who replies to help out.

Works now, she had created a user ID as prompted when installing the HotSynch Software, but it was not the same name of the Treo 755p.  The default ID was the one she from installing the software, so it showed nothing in address or contacts, but when she switched to the Treo ID than all her stuff was there.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

Thanks; however, I was really referring to this: if it is preinstalled on a Mac, I believe the license is for that computer only (unlike an MAS purchased version which can be used on any Mac owned). Has that requirement changed?
At this moment, that's correct. The OS X license included with a Mac can only be used with that Mac. However, in the case the OP has purchased OS X Mountain Lion in the past, this may change

When I work with a drive to boot many computers, I use the newest model computer I will be booting, and set the system up on that, run all the Apple updates. Normally I will have no issue booting any older computer with the same drive. Unless of course those older computers do not support the operating system on that drive.
If you want to test if the drive will boot the mac mini. Put your MacBook Pro into target mode. Connect the two computers together. And on the Mac Mini, go into system preferences and then under start up disk and see if the target disk mode computer's drive shows up there. Seelct that drive and restart. See if it boots ok. A bit easier then taking the drives out and moving things around.

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter>
It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

  • Can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop to use files on the airport?

can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop and use files on the airport time capsule?

If you mean an AirPort base station other than the Time Capsule, it doesn't have internal storage.
If you mean a Time Capsule, its internal drive can be used for regular file storage but shouldn't be; as with all drives, it'll eventually fail. You're better off using a standalone drive and setting Time Machine to back it up as well.
