Using an iPad as a router?

I live in the Marshall islands where my iPad has access to high speed internet but my MacBook Pro does not (don't ask why, it is the third world), is there a way or an app that can allow my iPad to function as a router for my MacBook Pro?

I wasn't going to go into this, but now I must. We have one state/government owned (85% of the shares) telecom service provider here that, when it was set up 20 years go also sold 15% of the shares to private individuals. So while this state owned provider enjoys a total monopoly on providing any form of telecommunication services at the same time they have a huge motive to make as much profit as they can. Please try to avoid using logic here, I know, a lot of this will be well beyond the comprehension of modern day man.
So here goes the sordid tale: Beginning in 1997, when the internet first came to our shores, we were paying about $800 a MONTH for 3 kbps dialup. Then they gratefully dropped the price about 5 years ago so up until about 6 months ago in the Marshall Islands we were paying ONLY about $400 a month for DIALUP (again about 3 kbps as along it wasn't raining and shorting the the wires out). If you wanted a 128k hookup the price was about $800 a MONTH, 256k was $3,000 a MONTH (and yes, we are talking *US dollars* here).
Earlier this year they connected a fiber optic cable from Guam to the rest of Micronesia including the Marshall Islands. Now you can get dialup for $39.99 a month unlimited use (before it was $1.80 an hour) and the "higher speed" 256k is now only $129 a month + 1 cent a minute. So you can see, even at these prices, we are still in internet h-e-double toothpick.
Now, for the complicated iPad/Macbook reverse tethering question/issue. If I took my Macbook Pro to one of the wireless "hotspots" on island, I could purchase a "Minute Card" for $10 that would give me 100 minutes (10 cents a minute) for high speed wireless internet access. These $10 cards will also work with the iPad. However, they also offer a service here *ONLY for cell phones* where you can buy unlimited wireless high speed access for *$15 a month*. You take in your cell phone, and the telecom company rep programs the phone to receive this service. They decided last week that they are going to treat iPads like cell phones and allow them to be available for this $15 monthly unlimited high speed service. So I have a choice: high speed wireless internet access for my Macbook Pro at 10 cents a minute, or use the iPad at $15 a month for the same speed of service.
Ok, if you are with me up to here, prepare because here is where it gets REALLY complicated.
The problem I am having is that for me to download say, the 60 MB upgrade of Safari (5.02) for the Mac, I would like to be able to use my iPad with the high speed internet--as opposed to my dialup on my iMac or the expensive wireless for the Macbook Pro--but when I try to download this to the iPad the Apple Download page keeps shifting me to a web page that says I can't download this to an iPad for later transfer to my iMac (I have tried numerous apps, none of them can do this). It is strange, this only happens on the Apple site with the iTunes and Safari updates, all other downloads I can do with numerous apps such as GoodReader, etc. I even tried using the Atomic Browser app at the "Desktop Safari" setting to trick the Apple web site, but to no avail. So that is why I want to tether my Macbook Pro to my iPad, so I can download this stuff to the Macbook Pro because my iPad won't let me.
Anyway, while it is a small but annoying problem I loathe giving this telecom authority more of my money than it has already sucked out of my pocket over the years when it comes to internet access.
Sorry for the long explanation, but, um, you guys asked.
Life in the jungle.

  • Ipad crashes Belkin router

I have had my ipad for over a year with no problems. In the last week my Belkin wireless router has been crashing regularly (every few minutes). Initially I thought the router was faulty but I have singled out the ipad as the problem, as I also have a laptop, desktop and iphone sharing the Belkin.
I have OS 4.3.1, could this update be the problem? I am reluctant to change any settings on the router as I use it for Sky, and the hassle I went through to get that working as they lock you to their own...
Anyone had a similar issue after the new OS? Can I go back a release?

Thanks for your message, but I have used this ipad with this router for well over a year, with never a single problem and only changes in Ipad OS. Only this week has it started crashing, which doesn't make much sense to me.
I have also checked with Belkin and there are no firmware updates.
I'm trying to get the latest OS 4.3.3, but that consistantly fails telling me the server has timed out. I have made sure that nothing else is using the network, so am baffled (and irritated) by this as well.

  • I currently have a D-Link DI-604 broadband router with windows computers.  How can I add wifi to the network for use with ipad?  Can I use AirPort Express?

I currently have a D-Link DI-604 broadband router with windows computers.  How can I add wifi to the network for use with ipad?  Can I use AirPort Express?

Yes. You can directly connect an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) using an Ethernet cable. The AXn would then just need to be configured as a bridge to allow the D-Link to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients connected to either router.
In this configuration, the AXn would broadcast a wireless network for your wireless network clients to connect to.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you may want to use your iPad as a personal hotspot. Please read over the attached article for information on the process.

  • Trying to setup my Airport with, mobile hotspot. I am using an iPad for setup.

Hey there, I am using my iPad to set up my Airport Express.
I'm actually trying to set up a POS, with a printer and it's been a huge headache.
Finally I've come to this possible solution of using an Airport. I did a quick google search and it brought me to this page. Only problem is when I use the Airport utility to tell the Airport to join a wireless next work.
As soon as I press update it'll process then just compeletly not recognize the Airport saying "No Base Stations have been found."
Noticed a few people had the same issue but their solutions were found using a Mac, where as I am limited to an iPad. Any help would be MUCH welcomed.

Once the AirPort Express joins another wireless network it become another wireless client on that network and is no longer performing as a wireless router. To be able to access it with the AirPort Utility, you much connect your iPad to the same wireless network that the Express is connected to.
Another "trick" is to temporarily enable "Airplane Mode," and then, disable it to allow your iPad to search and reconnect to this wireless network.

  • How can I use my ipad in a hotel that only has ethernet connections.    The apple store clerk told me that I can't use airport express unless I also have a computer with me in the hotel.

How can I use my Ipad in a hotel that only has ethernet connections?  The Apple store clerk told me that travel express won't work in my hotel unless I also have a computer.

The issue with the Airport Express (or any of the Apple routers) is that you need the Airport Utility to configure it.  Airport Utility works on OSX and Windows, but not on the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch.)  It will work, if you can preconfigure the Airport correctly ahead of time, but you'd be stuck if you did need to reconfigure while at the hotel.
You can use most any other router that is configured with a web page, which means you have a chance of configuring with Safari on the iPad.  If you want something somewhat portable, I use a "travel router" made by D-Link. The current model is the DAP-1350.  Other companies make similar travel routers, but I have no experience with the others.

  • Need ideas on best ways to convert files for best use on iPad

    Greetings,
As a tech geek that now has an iPad, I am looking for ways to improve the way I perform daily work functions through using the iPad vice a laptop. I am a regional service manager, and as such spend a lot of time on the road. I am hoping the iPad can make that travel easier.
I've already purchased programs such as Documents to Go, Print Central, Keynote, and PDF Expert. I even looked at ServiceMax.
Here is my issue. Currently, our service reports, inspection checklists, and parts ordering forms are all part of one ugly excel file that is 1MB in size and loaded with complicated formulas and macros. I know, having read some in these forums that the macros don't convert well, if at all. I also see that some PDF forms have issues.
ServiceMax was ideal, but it only interfaces with Salesforce.com and not Oracle, which is what we use.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a similar APP to ServiceMax, or an app/program that will allow me to custom create service reports that I and my team can utilize?
    Thanks in advance!

My scan doesn't recognize the above device. If there is no SMNP support in the device, is there anything other than classifying it as a network device that I can do?Also, I have two devices running off of this device by its routerEthernet ports. One is a MS Vista PC, the other is a MS Win 8.1 device. Is it possible to scan through this router to get information about these more moderndevices? If so, how?Likewise, the router is also a wireless access point. I only connect one device to it via Wi-Fi. How long does it take to connect to Wi-Fi the first time I use my Ipad? It's been over 30 minutes. I see that it wants to connect but it keeps on turning.

It should not take very long. Up to thirty seconds tops depending on your Wi-Fi network.
Try rebooting your Wi-Fi router. Turn off the router for 30 seconds then turn it back on. After the router completes its startup routine and indicates a good connection to the internet start you iPad again and see if it will connect.
If you still have problems you might try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network. Maybe one at your local coffee shop or library.

I have successffully used my iPad with the Apple TV with no problem but just recently, the Airplay icon doesn't come up on the iPad anymore when I'm trying to connect.   What can I do to fix this?

Try restarting your router as a first thing, this sometimes works for me.

  • Why now has a code to use the ipad with apple tv....

Why now has a code to use the

    restart ipad
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
restart appletv (you can just pull the plug)
restart the wifi router (you can just pull the plug unless the router documentation say otherwise)
if it does not help then make sure that your wifi router is not using the same ssid (default is often netgear or linksys or whatever the brand is) as other close by wifi networks as that could result in 1 or more of your devices connecting to another network then you think they are using
and if your wifi channel is the default if many close by wifi networks use the same channel it will cause disturbance
and if your wifi network is running 2.4Ghz then it's a rather busy frequency dect phones, microwave ovens and tons of other things use the same frequency so if one have the option of changing to 5Ghz it's less busy == give less disturbances

  • Can I use the iPad charger as a live USB hub?

If i was to use my iPad charger (after removing the cable), as a live USB hub for my external speakers, would that cause damage to the charger? Would this set up work? I've blown up a mac charger before with these experiments, don't wanna do another.

The problems with the Apple Maps app were overblown. Yes, there were some isolated accuracy and direction issues when it was released, but Apple has made a lot of improvement since then. I use it on my iPhone all the time and have yet had problems. It doesn't always choose the same route I would have chosen, but that's with all navigation apps.
