Using an iPad for entering data in the field

Hi
As part of my work, I inspect Porsches (www.findaporsche.com) for potential buyers.
At the moment, I use a clipboard and paper and pen. However, much of the information could be entered quickly into an iPad - VIN, registration number and so on - while other checks are tick boxes - lights, brakes and so on.
Once data is entered, I'd then want to be able to print out a smart-looking report for the client, either directly from the iPad or, more likely, from the Mac.
Can anyone suggest any apps that I could use? I've looked at Bento but, while this could work for the inputing, I'm not sure it would allow the data to be reformatted into a report. It's the sort of thing Filemaker will do, but I don't think Bento for iPad data can be exported to Filemaker.
Any help much appreciated!
Phil

you could try filemakerGO in the app store. it's from filemaker and should be able to do what you want, provided you already have Filemaker (which it seems you do)... you could also look into a web interface outside of an app which would allow you to do the same (but you would have to create yourself or have someone create it for you)

  • When I select a netflix movie on my iPad and push it to my apple TV, why doesn't the Apple TV take over the streaming, so that I can then use my iPad for other things?

From what I can tell, when I select the movie and hit the airplay button to move it to the apple TV, my iPad is still doing all the work of streaming the movie.  Why can't the apple TV take over the heavy work at this point?  I'd like to be able to use my iPad as more of a remote with an awesome interface for the apple TV.  The netflix app on iPad is great, and the easiest way to browse movies, and pushing them to the apple TV is fantastic, but once the movie starts, I want to use my iPad for other things!!!  Can this be put on the "to do" list for devs?

Have you tried the Remote app on iPhone/iPad to control AppleTV, do searches etc?  Should be easier than the remote alone and this does not involve Airplay.
Please note, only users read/comment here  - your idea is quite sensible in my view (maybe have a 'Continue viewing on AppleTV' option or something.  I doubt this would be high on Apple's roadmap but send them feedback here:

  • I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build.  The same call works fine when running on the device

I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build. The same call works fine when running on the device (iPhone) using debug build. When running with a release build, the result handler is never called (nor is the fault handler called). Viewing the BlazeDS logs in debug mode, the call is received and send back with data. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be a data size issue.
I have targeted one specific data call that returns in the String value a string length of 44kb, which fails in the release build (result or fault handler never called), but the result handler is called as expected in debug build. When I do not populate the String value (in server side Java code) on the object (just set it empty string), the result handler is then called, and the object is returned (release build).
The custom object being returned in the call is a very a simple object, with getters/setters for simple types boolean, int, String, and one org.23c.dom.Document type. This same object type is used on other other RemoteObject calls (different data) and works fine (release and debug builds). I originally was returning as a Document, but, just to make sure this wasn't the problem, changed the value to be returned to a String, just to rule out XML/Dom issues in serialization.
I don't understand 1) why the release build vs. debug build behavior is different for a RemoteObject call, 2) why the calls work in debug build when sending over a somewhat large (but, not unreasonable) amount of data in a String object, but not in release build.
I have't tried to find out exactly where the failure point in size is, but, not sure that's even relevant, since 44kb isn't an unreasonable size to expect.
By turning on the Debug mode in BlazeDS, I can see the object and it's attributes being serialized and everything looks good there. The calls are received and processed appropriately in BlazeDS for both debug and release build testing.
Anyone have an idea on other things to try to debug/resolve this?
Platform testing is BlazeDS 4, Flashbuilder 4.7, Websphere 8 server, iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). Tried using multiple Flex SDK's 4.12 to the latest 4.13, with no change in behavior.
    Thanks!

After a week's worth of debugging, I found the issue.
The Java type returned from the call was defined as ArrayList.  Changing it to List resolved the problem.
I'm not sure why ArrayList isn't a valid return type, I've been looking at the Adobe docs, and still can't see why this isn't valid.  And, why it works in Debug mode and not in Release build is even stranger.  Maybe someone can shed some light on the logic here to me.

You probably need to recalibrate the battery. See link below.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. So I have been using my iPad for a few months now and I recently noticed that the time display next to the playlist name in the music  app that is supposed to display the total song count and time of a playlist is way off. I have a 25 song playlist that is around 2 hours on my computer appears as 2003 minutes on my iPad.  It's a smart playlist limited to 25 songs if that makes any difference. Is this happening to anyone else? Any help would be appreciated!

    Greetings,
First make an iCal backup, File > Export > Archive.
Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
__NOTE: Removing these files will remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
Once the computer is back up and running open iCal and test.
    Hope that helps.

Of course there is. This is the kind of calc script that only gets run once, so make usre you test it well before doing it on production and make a backup of production before doing it.
    It would be something like
Fix(time frame, accounts to be flipped, level zero other dimensions)
    actual = actual * -1;
    EndFix
    Cal dim dimensions
Note, I chose actual, but you could do it for any dimension that has a single or only a couple of members. What ever dimension you choose to do the calculation on, it can't be included in the fix statement

WWhen I use my iPad for an hour or more it gets really warm to the touch, what is causing this?

    you using it.
WHen batteries drain they generate heat, as does your screen and processor.
Warm is normal. if it ever gets too hot to handle - literally - then stop using it and book an appiontment at your local apple store. But really, generating heat is no different from your computer getting warm as it's used.

Didn't work in what way.  Are you unable to start it up?  Does it start but then freezes?  Does the screen stay black when you turn it on?
Try this - press the home and power buttons and keep pressing them until the apple logo appears.

  • Can I use NOW() to auto-enter data on a form?

    Hi,
I want to use a form in Numbers (for iPad) for rapid data entry. The the time of observation is a field of interest.
Can i use the NOW() function to register the time the record is created, but then not update?
In my experimentation so far, I have a field which is set to =NOW(). It works in the instant that a record is created but all of the values seem to change in all of the previous records when the table is active or a new record is created.
Is there some additional trick to get it to register NOW() just at the moment that the record is created and then become a static reference, or am I asking too much of Numbers?

    Hi dh,
    Numbers 3.1 on a MacBook with OS X 10.9.1
NOW updates whenever a change is made (or the document is reopened).
Insert =NOW() and press enter to record the time.
Immediately copy that cell, then Edit > Menu > Paste Formula results. That will convert it to Actual instead of a Formula.
Typing a value into a cell anywhere (here 1 is typed into C2) will update Now, but not update the Paste Formula Results.
NOW anywhere in the document will also update
Sheet 1, both NOW cells updated
Sheet 1-1, both NOW cells updated just by typing 1 into Sheet 1 Table 1 C2
    Regards,
    Ian.
