Using an iPhone as a wireless webcam in Linux

Hi,
I need to make video calls and I don't have a webcam, so, using GStreamer, I've set up my iPhone to send video to my laptop over my wifi. Skype is recieving the video input from my phone under Options> Video Devices. However, when I activate the camera in-call, my recipient doesn't recieve any video. Can anyone think of anything I could try?

If you mean you want to connect to and control the Windows system from your iPhone, search the App Store for "VNC". You'll find a number of apps.

my friend has an old at&t iphone 3g which is just sitting there so she decided to use it as an ipod but it says it needs a sim card. is there any way to bypass that so she can use it as an ipod??

I'm trying to use my iphone 3g as an ipod now that I've upgraded to an iphone 4. But it is telling me that I need to have a sim card in my iphone 3g to use it. I don't want to use it as a phone at all so I wouldn't think that I need a sim card.

Actually, I wanted to let my son use my old iphone 3g as an ipod now that I upgraded to the iphone 4.
But it has continued to shut down and say that needed to restore it.
The last time I did it, it's now saying that I need to have a SIM card in order for it to work.
Now, I'm not wanting him to use it as a phone or for texting, so I just assumed this would work. But it's been very challenging.
Any thoughts on what I need to do so he can use it as an ipod?

I am using my Iphone 3 as an itouch now for music.

I resent and now I cannot access desktop screen to access the music. It states
"No Sim card installed, Insert a valid sim with no PIN lock to activate phone" but I do not wish to activate the phone. I would just like to continue using it as a music player. Can someone help me?

You need a SIM to activate the phone. If the phone is unlocked any SIM will do. Otherwise you need a SIM for the carrier previously used.

I bought an AE and was told I could use my AT&T service to "use" my AE. All I get is the blinking amber light.

Not sure who gave you that advice but he/she was not correct. If your AT&T contract provides for "teathering" service option, you could use the iPhone as a wireless modem for your iPad, but it won't work for the AirPort Express, Extreme, or Time Capsule.
If you have this plan then you wouldn't need the AirPort base station for what your networking goal is.

FIrst, I HATE AT&T, the coverage is awful and I am very happy with Verizon. I would like to use the iPhone as more of a PDA, and having a PDA with wireless connectivity would be great.
Do you have to activate the phone plan, or can you just use it with a wireless connection?
Any chance they will eventually offer it with other carriers?

Well you can be sure Apple will not make a product for Verizon for at least five years, as that is how long its contract lasts with ATT. That contract prevents Apple from allowing the iPhone to work on anybody else's network, and from making any phones for non-GSM networks. The only other GSM network in the US is T-Mobil. SO I suspect Apple can make a non iPhone for T-Mobile before its deal with ATT expires.
Also, you can try going to ATT and telling them you want the iPhone, however, you will not provide them your social security number, and ask are there any options available to you. They may tell you that you can use the iPhone as a Go-Phone (they are not adversing this, but it is in their policy manual). After a month, cancel the go phone service (as there is no contract). Also, ATT generally allows you to cancel a contract with 30 days. So they might just let you cancel the contract, and your iPhone will probably still work (the non phone features).

Silly question here, Okay is there a way to use the AT&T Edge network, via my iphone as my conduit to the internet, Yeah, i know its slow, but if I cancelled my DSL, that would pay for my monthly plan. In other words Plugging in my iphone to my imac not to sync, but as a satelite- Wifi internet receiver????

Yes in theory, though do check your phone contract small print and keep an eye on your data usage - in theory local data sent across the LAN created by the hotspot should not use 3G data but some carriers seem to treat it as internet data usage.
