Hi - I live in the US and have the Apple USB Power Adapter and a power outlet adapter from Radio Shack. Will that work? Do I need to worry about the 220-240v? Do I really need to buy the $40 Apple World Travel Adapter Kit? Thanks, RJ

First, the iPhone would need to be unlocked. That would depend on where you bought it. Next, the North American phone would not work with all of the networks outside of the US. Also, the warranty for the device is only good in the US, so if you have a problem with the phone, you would need to bring it back to the US to an Apple Store. Where did you purchase the phone?

I am planning on buying an iPhone, as much as the prospect excites me I have to rethink my decission as I need to travel to Nairobi for a project and will be stationed there for over a year. So wanted to know if this phone if bought here would work there or I need to make some software changes before I leave?

I brought three iphones from stores in usa at full prices, 3gs phones 65 gb and came to india with it. how ever none of the carriers, vodaphone or airtel has a policy to accept the phones and to provide sim cards or connection or unlock the phone. Apple can easily obtain imei number and should unlock the iphone if its used in india and if its not on An ATNT Contract. Why is apple not doing it, i fail to understand. the iphone should be treated just like the ipodtouch or the ipad if the full price has been paid for it. One can understand if one is on a contract and gets the iphone at a discounted rate. Apple is losing heavily, and the other easy way out is to jailbreak and let me assure everyone, one can jailbreak the phone in five minutes flat, and it works fine, so why would apple not want to plug this and let consumers have an unlocked phone, that will kill the jailbreak market totally and push apple sales.

If you live in India ,buy in India
a US purchase will only work 3G outside the US and you will have no warranty
If India is your country you can use an India sourced iPhone in US on roaming but on contract in your home Country

Moving to India - Using my iPhone there.

I will be moving to India in June and am wondering how to use my iphone there without paying international charges. I will be in India for 2 months and then come back to the states for a month and then keep doing that over and over again. I need to make frequent calls in the states (elderly mom and kids) but will also need to use the phone in India. Can I get by using the same phone or will I need to live with two phones - one here and one in India? I don't want and can't afford international rates on my ATT phone plan.

It is very simple. Have your children make an account on skype on the computer. You can still make calls through skype while your phone is in airplane mode, as long as you have wi-fi on.

The only way to use an iPhone from Japan in India is to pay your Japanese carrier for international roaming. Japanese iPhones can not be unlocked.

I had the same problem. Kept getting message of waiting for activation or check network connections. I also tried every solution out there and nothing worked. This did though: I download the newest version of itunes (through Internet Explorer - Google Chrome wouldn't work). It pulled in my entire library thank goodness and then I plugged my iphone 4s into the computer. I let itunes find it, did a complete backup in icloud, then did a restore. Entire process took a couple of hours, but I now have imessage and facetime back. I was about ready to give up on Apple and go get a different phone ~

Only the carrier to whom the device is locked can authorize it's unlocking. Contact the carrier to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
