Using an iPhone4 with no Service plan...does the GPS still work?

If you take an iPhone 4 that does not have a Cell plan at all, and use it like an iPod Touch, will the GPS still work?  Obviously, the assisted GPS portion will not work, but we're looking to use certain apps that measure distance via GPS (specifically, running apps like Zombies Run).  These apps will run on an iPod Touch, but the absense of a GPS chip means that certain features are disabled or not quite as accurate.  We have no intention of ever purchasing a cell plan for the phone, we're just looking to get an iPod Touch with GPS built in to it.

  • Does the gps still work iphone if not connected to internet

so some kid took my iphone5 out off my hand and passed it around at lunch and now i dont know what to do i put it in lost mode then it went offline can i still find it even when its offline

The GPS works if the phone is still powered on, but if there is no internet connection, either cellular or Wi-Fi, then you will not be able to track it. If you did not have a passcode on the device, then change the passwords on all of the accounts you have on the phone. More than likely the device is powered off, which is why you are seeing the offline message.

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • If i buy an iphone 5 and don't get a plan will the apps still work?

Am looking into buying an iphone 5 and wondered if i just got the phone and didn't use a plan with it would the apps still work or does it have to have a plan?

You dont need a Cellular plan to use the apps, it will work like an iPod

  • Why does the GPS not work with other programs?

It works ok with Blackberry maps. But there are about 5 or 6 programs that I use that will not lock GPS. The one that really florred me was the camera. I sit there and sit there waiting for the gps to lock on (turn from red to white) and nothing happens. We all know that google maps doesnt work (it only will use cell towers. After the STORM disater you would have thought RIM would have been a bit more careful with thier OS's. Hope they get a fix out soon.

    Hi Barbara
    Thanks for the response.
I updated to Mavericks (10.9.3) and the organizer now appears to work.
However, it is extremely slow in previewing photos that were already on
the Mac and does not appear to be able to download photos from a Canon
5DIII. It appears to start but then spins and spins. It ran overnight
    and was unresponsive this morning.
Do you have any ideas as to what to do to make this work?

  • Will the gps still work when you have no wi-fi or cell service?

just wondering if the gps is stand alone?  so i can use it as a chart plotter on a boat.

Yes you can use GPS on a boat. You must download the charts of the area you will be sailing in to your iPad before leaving. Keep in mind that the iPad is very hard to view in bright sunlight.
Of course my response assumes you have the correct iPad model that has the GPS hardware. The wifi-only iPad does not contain GPS hardware.

  • Does the GPS function work if you are out of cellular & wifi range?

How does the aGPS function of the iPhone 3G work? Do you have to have a cellular or wifi connection to be able to get a location fix, or will GPS satellite signals-only be sufficient?

    Question?
    Answer.
If you don't have EDGE, or 3G, how is the iPhone MAP app going to download the map?
    It won't, as it can't.
I don't believe they are built in.
    You believe right.
This is why Apple needs to let someone build a true GPS app for the iPhone, which you can download the maps to the phone.
Maybe. But this was not the question. The question was, if the iPhone 3G would be able to find it's location even without WiFi and cellular network. And yes, it would find the location. The question was not if it would be able to display that location in the Maps app.

  • Do I need a wireless card to use a router with my iMac or does the built in

I am having ComCast install a router at my home and they tell me I'll need a wireless card. I shouldn't need one with Airport Extreme installed should I?

    Right - sort of.
You do need a wireless card to connect to a wireless router. However your Mac already has built-in wireless (almost every iMac does, only the original from 1998 didn't) so you're good to go - you don't need any extras.

  • Does the sensor still work while wearing the shoes?

I purchased the fancy Nike+ shoes, the ones with the compartment for the sensor below the foot bed. I used the application (successfully) with my 2nd gen Nano for a month or two, then I stopped using the app when I was pregnant. However, I still wore the shoes. Now I can't get my sensor to link to my iPhone 3GS. Was my sensor still "awake" while I was walking around, even though it wasn't linked to my Nano or my iPhone?
    Thanks!
    MissSea

Yes, if the sensor in on your shoes, it will still be running. You either need to put it into sleep mode or remove it from your shoes. If the sensor battery ran out, it is officially not replaceable. But, if you google something along the lines of "nike + ipod replace battery" you can find ways of doing it without buying a new one or paying to have it fixed by Nike/Apple.

  • I dropped my computer and the screen cracked and now I can't see anything. I am using an adapter to hook it up to a monitor to see if the computer still works. All I see is the welcome screen without the login window. How do I bring that up to log in????

So yeah, I dropped my computer and nothing comes up. I'm using an apdapter to use a monitor I have to see if the computer still works. It shows the default picture of Leopard galaxy thingy but the login window doesn't come up so i can log in. What do I do????

I assume this is due to the fact that system detects your internal monitor as default one, and that is there where system sends main data. In order to force system send data to the external monitor, get a mouse and physical keyboard, close MB lid, and then press any key on the external keyboard.
when you get there, go to system preferences/display, and manually move the Apple upper bar to the external monitor, then choose mirror; ultimately, set optimal resolution.

  • Using WS-Security with Web Service Controls in WLI 8.1 SP3

We have a process that calls a web service hosted on a .NET environment. The technique we have used is to generate a service control from the web service WSDL and call that control from a process. The web service is protected using a WS-Security usernameToken policy. The problem is that the .NET environment requires the wsse:Nonce and wsu:Created elements to be provided along with the token and I cannot see how I can specify this using a wsse policy file in WebLogic workshop. Does anyone have any advice for the best way to add this information to the security element in the SOAP header from within a WLI process? I've seen some example code for a java web service client, but that would not really fit with the control-based approach normally adopted in a WLI environment.

You won't be able to do this using the WSSE file.
An easy way to get around this is to use an XML Bean built from the WS-Security XML Schema. You'll have to read the WS-Security spec to determine how to create the nonce, but you'll be able to convert this XML Bean into the Element[] that the setOutputHeaders() method, which is on the service control you call the .NET Web Service with.

eschmidt, we always want you to understand where each charge is coming from. I understand being a consumer myself how concerning it is when an unexpected charge shows up. Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Your iPhone was not put into Lost Mode because of an unexpected error. Try enabling Lost Mode again.
