Using an ipod shuffle on another computer

I have an ipod shuffle with my main music library at home. My question is can I simply play the music on my shuffle on another computer's itunes without syncing? When I plug it in the only options are to sync (and loose everything) or cancel so I can't play my music.

Why would it need to play from the iTunes on the computer when it is fully loaded with songs and is charged/charging on the shuffle charging dock?
Why? Because that would require an ongoing transfer of data from the iPod to computer, which would require more complicated hardware and programming, which would increase the size and cost of producing a shuffle. If it is treated as just a known playlist, data transfer is only needed when you manually or automatically fill it. That's simple.
It tells me 0 items, 464 KB available.
That is probably outside of iTunes. The files are invisible, so it is 0 items. The files still exist, so they take up space.
Will the songs be erased from the shuffle as soon as I select 'Erase and Sync'
Yes. An iPod shuffle can only be associated with one computer at a time. If you want to get songs off of it, you need to use a third party utility (search using Google to find one) which can transfer the songs from the iPod before using iTunes to +erase and sync+.

So you are trying to connect your iPod Shuffle to another computer you don't normally sync it with is that correct?  And it won't charge for some reason?  How are you connecting it?  To a USB or a USB port located directly on the PC?

  • SYNCRONIZED IPOD SHUFFLE TO ANOTHER COMPUTER

Dear all, I had my Ipod shuffle sincroinized with my previous laptop, I try to use in another laptop and tells me is sincro with another. How can I syncro to this new one?

This is how I got my music without wiping it out first.....I connected my iPod and of course it wanted to erase my music so I clicked cancel. I went into my computer and clicked on the iPod and went into the folders shown. I knew how many songs I had and could see folders with various weird file names of about 5 characters so I copied all of them onto my hard drive into the iPod then into iPod control then into the music folder. Then I went into iTunes and clicked on file, add a file and browsed to the music folder and clicked on the weird named files and iTunes added it back in without me losing my music. Of course when I disconnected and reconnected my iPod I allowed it to erase it since I had all my music.
I hope it works for you like it did me.

  • I cant use my ipod touch on another computer

can anyone help me on what to do, i cant connect my touch to another computer apart from the one i originally used to start it up.

You have the accessibility VoiceOver feature turned on.
Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see:

  • My computer is not recognizing my ipod shuffle.  The computer says to use the ipod reset utility.  When I tried doing this it told me that it was for a 32 bit version which I obviously do not have.  My computer is only a few months old.  What do I do now?

My computer is not recognizing my ipod shuffle.  The computer says to use the ipod reset utility.  When I did that it came up with another message that it was only good for a 32 bit version.  I guess I do not have a 32 bit version.  I just purchased my computer a few months ago and it uses the windows 7 operating system.  What do I do now?

    Not sure if this helps:-
The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered  owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work.  Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple  Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them.  The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.

  • How do I download and install itunes software to use an ipod shuffle?

I recently purchased an Ipod shuffle and, not being familiar with downloading and computer products, am having difficulties figuring it out.  I clicked on the download button, then after less than a minute it went to another screen that said it was downloaded and that was it.  I found the download in my download file but there was no instructions or button to install it.  Can someone please give me some step by step instructions on what I am to do so that I can start using my ipod shuffle.
    Thanks,

Is your Windows Vista 32 or 64 bit?
To find out if your computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, do the following:
Open System by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
Under System, you can view the system type.

  • Can you charge your shuffle on another computer?

I know you cant download music of more than one computer...but are u able to charge it using another computer? Im going on a long trip and how will i charge it for my return trip?

Yes. All you need to charge the shuffle is a high-powered USB port. Apple sells a wall-wart adaptor. Third parties sell car adaptors.
If you plug the shuffle into another computer, just remember to stop iTunes from deleting your files
Also remember to unmount the iPod if it doesn't do so automatically. The shuffle can charge while mounted or unmounted but if you use the "safely eject USB device" thinggy in Windows, the iPod shuffle will not charge.

  • I re-installed Windows - Itunes says my iPod is for another computer

So I re-installed Windows XP Pro on my computer and I just installed iTunes. I also updated my iPod. I have a 4GB Ipod Nano 2nd Gen. Itunes tells me that my iPod is for another computer, obviously since I re-intalled windows. How do I make it native to this copy of Windows vs my old one? Even tho they're the same copy..

So you didn't back up your stuff before you formatted your HD?
    Bummer...
There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • IPod synced with another computer message

I have an iPod and an iPod nano suing iTunes on one computer, when I plug the iPod in and try to sync it, the iPod syneced to another computer comes up. The nano works fine. The iPods use two different playlists and the playlist for the iPod is empty. Is there any way to get the songs off the iPod and back onto the computer?

"Is there any way to get the songs off the iPod and back onto the computer?"
If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Connecting shuffle to another computer

Can I connect a 2nd gen shuffle to another computer without "syncing" it? My son has a 2nd gen shuffle and he has different songs on the computer at his mother house than the computer at my house.
Can he put the songs from the 2 computer without sync? is it possible?

Nope... Shuffles are "synced" with a specific iTunes library. He could always use a 3rd party application such as YamiPod to move his songs from the Shuffle to the iTunes library on his mother's computer... and vice versa.

  • Can I use my iPod Shuffle as a U-disk ?

I plugged my iPod Shuffle into the USB socket and it worked properly with my iTune. However, I couldn't find my iPod in window explorer. Is it normal ? Can I use it as Udisk ?
    iPod Shuffle   Windows XP

    Hi,
If you are able to listen to the songs from the iPod shuffle then it is normal.
To use the iPod shuffle as a USB disk, in iTunes go to Edit > Preferences > click on iPod (make sure that the iPod shuffle is connected to the computer)
then check the option "Enable Disk Use" and slide the slider to the left or right depending upon the data you want to store in the iPod shuffle.
Post back if you have any doubts.

This may be a very dumb question, but can I use my iPod on my home computer and work computer? I noticed that it seems to want to do weird things to my iPod if I try to hook it up on my work computer (I have all of my music on my home computer... it is backed up 1 or 2 times a week to preserve my music). If you're exporting a project then you'll only get the images in that project. Also if any of the masters are referenced then you won't get those masters unless you check Consolidate masters into exported library
It might be best if you started from the beginning and explained what it is your are trying to do and how you're going about doing it. Also a description of you're hardware/software setup would be helpful.
