Using an old AEBS as a printer access point

I would like some help please on how to configure an old (2006 UFO) Airport Extreme Basestation as a wireless hub I can use to plug some printers into for printing over a wireless network (if it can be done). I'm using Airport utility 5.3.1.
I recently purchased a 500GB Time Capsule which acts as both a backup device and my ADSL wireless router. This made my old Airport extreme redundant, but I want to use it as a wireless printer server. But I'm a bit stuck on how to configure my Airport network and Apple support and a local reseller haven't a clue!
To start with I setup my Time Capsule device, connected it to my D-Link ethernet modem and everything is working fine. I then reset the old AEBS which creates a new wireless network called Apple Network a78a67. I then switched back to my Time Capsule network and did the following in Airport Utility to Time Capsule:
- Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
- Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
- Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
I applied the settings and restarted the device. Then I switched back to to the new Apple Network a78a67 created through reseting the AEBS. This is the bit that makes little sense to me...
- Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
- Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
- Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
- Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.
The problem being that I DO NOT have an option to choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. The only two options I have are to "Create a Wireless Network" or "Participate in a WDS Network". Likewise there are no options to choose a network name from a pop-up menu. So although I can configure and switch between two wireless networks, it seems the two devices don't want to talk with one another, thus I have two wireless networks.
What I want to do is to have one single wireless network - with Time Capsule providing internet access and the AEBS providing wireless printer access.
I have tried configruing the AEBS using the "Participate in WDS Network", but on saving the settings an error message is displayed regarding a lack of WDS Nodes???
Can anyone advise please?

Thanks for your help and advice. I got there eventually in a roundabout way! At one point I was given an error message stating that the configuration could not be retrieved from the Time Capsule. Then the internet connection via the modem was lost. But after a couple of intensive restarts, both units appeared under the same network and I can see my printer connected now.
I've seen this with AEBSs when changing their configurations, too. Glad you got round the problem in the end.
One more question through, I've connected a 4 port USB hub to the Airport Extreme Basestation but I can only get one printer to show up at a time under System preferences and Airport Utililty. Is this because the USB hub being used is not self powered or because this model of Airport Extreme only allows connectivity to a single printer at any one time?
I think it is because you can only use one printer at a time with this model. See this knowledge base article for details. You likely have firmware version > 5.5 but I'm guessing don't have the relevant AEBS model. Take a look, though.

  • Can I use an old actiontec router as an access point in another room?

Hey folks, sorry to create another post but  I need some help and I didn't know where else to go.
Okay so I have my old actiontec GT704-WG router lying around from when I used to have regular high speed internet. I was wondering if I could hook that up in the top floor and be able to have my wifi devices (iphone, ps3, laptop, etc...) connect to that, instead of the fios router all the way in the basement. Of course, I would want it to connect to the same network as it would if I connected directly to fios router. But I wanna know if this is possible?
If it is possible, what would I have to do in order for my wifi devices to connect to it?
    Thanks!

You would have to connect it via an ethernet cable, lan port to lan port, as I don't believe it's possible to connect it wirelessly.
To connect wirelessly you would need a wireless bridge.  You could get an old Linksys wrt54g router that supports DD-WRT and flash the firmware on that to convert it into a wireless bridge
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
however I believe you would not be able to connect wirelessly to the linksys as it's now running as a bridge.

  • Using the Aiport Express as a Wireless Access Point on Windows XP

I would like to use my airport express as a wireless access point so that it will connect wirelessly to my router and via an Ethernet cable to my laptop that does not have a wireless card. Also, I have a laptop that I don't have admin rights to, so I can't install the airport express software. I do have another computer in which I am able to set things up on, but ultimately I would like to use the Ethernet port on the airport express as a DHCP device that once configured it will automatically connect to my laptop even after powering off and on any machine with DHCP. I believe that this can be done - but correct me if I am wrong.
So far, I have been able to get the airport express to connect to my router, but I can't seem to get the intenet connection on my laptop. Can someone help? Does the software have to be installed to work even after it is configured?
    Thanks!

I have successfully gotten my AX to connect to my wireless router via the wireless client mode, but I can't seem to get the network connection to come out the either net jack of the AX.
Unfortunately, the wireless client mode will not activate the Ethernet port. The purpose of this mode is to connect to an existing wireless network as a client (just like any other device connecting to the network) and be able to either/or stream iTunes or share a USB printer.
The only mode where the Ethernet port is enabled, would be to configure the AX as either a relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). But, unfortunately, your Belkin wireless router may not be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Again, the only Belkin routers, that I'm aware of that are compatible are the F5D7230-4 & F5D7130.

  • Using an old WRT54G as a print server

I have an old WRT54G wireless router that I would like to use as a print server or access point for an HP printer that is located in a downstairs office. it would only be the printer hooked up. I just want to be able to print from anywhere in the house. Is this possible? Do I need different firmware? Any help with instructions would be great!! Thanks
    Marcel

Try http://www.dd-wrt.com.  It gives you the capability to put the router into client mode.  I am using it on my WRT54G to connect to a WRT54G2, but not with a printer.  Since your printer is network capable, I see no reason why this shouldn't work.

  • Can I disable my Verizon Fios Router Wireless radio, connect it to a switch and use my airport express as my wireless access point connected to an in wall ethernet port?

Here's the deal.  I have a Verizon Fios MI424WR router.  My house has CAT5 throughout the house.  The media panel is located in the garage.  I want to take the Verizon Fios Router and cannot it in the media panel so I can connect a switch to it, that way, all my CAT5 can fire throughout the house. Verizon being Verizon decided to connect the router directly in the office.
Can I go this route (Router in media panel, switch cross connect to it) and use Airport Express, connected to one of the in-wall CAT5 ports in my house and then set it up as my wireless access point to provide wifi to my portable devices (iPad, iPhone, Macbook)?  Is this possible? Will Airport Express comminicate with my verizon router via ethernet in-wall? Do I have to turn off the wireless radio in the Verizon router?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is right, by hard wired I was just making clear wired vs wireless attachment.  AirPort family of devices will only act in a repeater mode with their own family members, not FiOS routers.  they have to be wired to work.
There are some useful docs you can download from Apple, Support, Manuals, Peripherals, AirPort (just follow thos links from the Support button on the top bar):
    Apple AirPort Networks
    Designing AirPort Networks
    AirPort Express Setup Guide
The last has a diagram of what you are trying to do, though without the house wiring, etc., but the basic principle.

Do you have another router? If not, then the TC must be connected to the modem by Ethernet cable for you to have a network.

I probably should have been more specific in my first post.  I have tried various corrective steps including the ones found at this link.  Below is the network event log entry from the failed attempt to connect.  As you can see, the connecting system can see the hotspot but can't get the hotspot to answer roll call.  It thinks it might be a signal strength issue but in fact it has a strong [all 5 bars] signal.

  • Can I use an old AEBS as a range extender?

All I want to do is get it working so that my TV and BR Player can have internet access for firmware updates (and in the case of the TV, program and other software updates) so it doesnt matter if its going to be a bit slower than the rest of the network.  I'm currently using the current model AEBS in another room in the house, and really dont particularly want to have ethernet cables draped down the corridors.  I did plug in the old one (2003 vintage IIRC, its the one with the built in dialup modem: A1034) but my MBP could not see it to set up... ?need older airport utility?
Anyway, it may be its not worth bothering, maybe better to just get an aiport express... or something over powerline... its just that I already have the older AEBS, and hoped to put it to good use.
All advice and recommendations gratefully received

Unfortunately, that older AEBS will not do what you want....even if you manage to find it in AirPort Utility.
A "new" Express could be configured to "extend" a wireless network to provide more wireless coverage and both Ethernet ports would be available for Ethernet devices.....since the Express is configured as a "bridge" in this type of setup. If you need more ports, you can add an Ethernet switch.
But then, you might be up to the price of a new AEBS....which could also be configured to "extend" and you would have 4 Ethernet ports available.
Powerline could work as well. Hard to say...since the performance of EOP devices varies tremendously. This is one of those times when you won't know if something will work until you try....so it would be wise to understand the store's return policies before you buy.

  • Using syslogd for other devices on LAN (printer, access point, etc)

I have googled a bit on using syslog on FreeBSD to receive events from other devices on the LAN & see that I need to start the daemon with the "-u" switch, if I am not mistaken. I have additionally searched on how to start my daemon in this way but have not found how to do this. Would someone be so generous as to explain to me which "conf" file I need to edit.
Extra points for the command on how to restart the daemon to make the config chage take effect without rebooting.
(note: I have already allowed the traffic through the firewall)
    Peace & Love.

  • Can I use my Apple TV as an WLAN Access Point?

What plan name do you have as stated on your bill. If it says More Everything, the hotspot functionality is already included.

  • Share printer only with old AEBS (802.11g)

    Hi
I have two AEBS connected in a WDS. One is the old 802.11g and the other the 1.gen 802.11n.
I have read that establishing a WDS with mixed (802.11g & 802.11n) AirPorts can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode AND for every base station added the overall bandwidth would be cut in half.
What I want is to use the old AEBS to share a printer only. Not internet or extend the network.
Is it possible to do this still just having one network to connect to?

I don't have the same products here to test this out, but if you have some spare time and want to try this.....it might work.
You might want to write down your WDS settings before you make any changes so that you can go back to them if needed.
Using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup on both devices.....
Configure the 802.11n AirPort Extreme normally so that the Wireless Mode is "Create a wireless network"
Set the Radio Mode to 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    Set Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Update to save settings
    On the older AirPort Extreme......
See if there might be a setting for Wireless Mode to "Join a wireless network". You may need to hold down the option key on your Mac to see this choice if it is there
Wireless Network Name would be the name of the 802.11n network
Security = same as 802.11n network
Password = same as 802.11n network
    Confirm
    Update

I have two p1102w printers set up in a school, any time I try to print it will only work if the laptop i'm using is connected to a different wireless access point than the printer. This happens anywhere in the school, has anyone ever encountered something like this before?
The laotops are running xp sp3 professional by the way.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas.

First thing to do is check your routing rules and tables in the network to make sure the type of communication you're wanting (printing via wireless on the same access point) is allowed. I'm betting something is off in those that's preventing communication.
