Using and External DVD/CD Drive

I have only used the SuperDrive in my eMac.
I think it has died and I am wondering about just buying an external drive to work with my 1 GB 800mhz eMac.
Here are my questions:
How is this to set up?
How much as an external DVD/CD drive?
Will it also play regular DVDs in addition to burning them?
Best,

Sir,
I did this firmware thing but I sadly don't recall what it is right now.
That didn't work.
Then I turned over my eMac opened up the back and pressed the PNU or PMI button.
That didn't work.
Then I cleaned the drive using my DVD/CD cleaner.
That worked.
The firmware thing and PNU/PMI thing are on thread in this section.
I would say start clicking around for topics similar to yours. I apologize that I don't have more of an exact offering of information.
Let me know if anything works...

  • Is it possible to install Tiger using an external DVD drive?

I have one the of the first iMacs and at the time I thought I didn't need a DVD Player. However, now I was thinking of buying an external DVD player/burner. Is it possible to upgrade to Tiger using the external DVD drive since I don't have an internal one?

    Hi Celticart,
    Welcome to the discussions.
I have an old AGP PowerMac G4 to which I have hooked an external Firewire DVD Drive. I have installed Tiger without any problems, using this drive. I see no reason why it couldn't be done on an iMac as well, (provided it has Firewire).
I don't think you could get it to work using an external drive hooked up via USB.
    Cheers!

  • Can I install Tiger using an external DVD drive?

My PowerBook is being repaired and I have to use an older G4/733 tower (OS 9.2; CD/zip drives only) from 2001 ASAP. I purchased Tiger and now need to load it, along with the new software. Rather than purchasing an internal dvd drive, can I buy and external dvd drive to install Tiger/new software? I've seen some posts that say "no" and others that say yes, as long as its firewire, not USB. In looking at external drives, I've seen some compatibility requirements that say OS X as the minimum. Some places like CDW and the Apple store don't seem to have an answer for me. Does anybody here know? thanks!

Internal drives are much cheaper; you can get a DVD burner for under $40 online, vs. well over a $100 for an external, which may or may not boot your specific system.
The NEC ND-3550A or Pioneer DVR-110D will both boot the OS installer DVD when using the "C" Key, or from Startup Disc...
In a QS, you just have to remove the drive tray faceplate before installing the drive; This Apple Article has clear diagrams of the replacement process.

  • Starting up an emac using an external dvd drive?

My emac has frozen. I was installing the software update to system 10.4.6 when the machine crashed (not enough HD space? don't know.)
Now, it won't get past the Starting Mac OS X screen.
I figure I need to do a clean install or something drastic, just to rebuilt the system software. I think that will work, but I have a problem:
The 10.4 disks I bought only came in DVDs. My emac only has a CD drive, so I installed the software using an external DVD burner.
I have tried to restart holding down the C key, but it's not starting off the external drive.
I have no idea where the ancient OSX disks (CDs) are that came with the computer, and don't know if it's a good idea to go backwards anyhow.
I know the actual hard drive on the emac is functional, because I was able to make it a target disk to back up the files today.
Any clue how to start up using the external DVD drive and the 10.4 DVD?

    Edward Rosenstein,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Had you used patchburn on the external DVD drive?
Does the drive appear as an option using the option key to bring up Startup Manager?
You mention backing up the eMac's hard drive in Firewire Target Disk Mode. The host computer you used for that should show you how much free space there is on the eMac hard drive; you'll need at least 5 to 8 GB free.
If the host computer you used for the Firewire Target Disk Mode backup has a DVD drive, you can use that to install 10.4 onto the eMac while the eMac is connected in target disk mode. If the host computer doesn't have a DVD drive, try moving the external DVD drive to the host, run Patchburn if it's not recognized, and you should be able to install onto the eMac that way.

  • Upgrade to SL using an external DVD drive?

    Hi all:
I've got an older mac mini (it's an intel machine), but the internal dvd drive has been broken for a long time. I've been using an external DVD drive when needed. I've been trying to upgrade to SL from 10.5.8, but it just won't work. It gets to the instal screen and then at "45 minutes remaining" it flashes to the end of the status bar and reboots my computer... where I am still on 10.5.8. I tried repairing permissions and all that good stuff, but no dice.
Any help? Is the weak link my external DVD burner? Thanks!

Yes, there is a reason. That's what I was trying to figure out. I don't think it would have to do with using an external DVD. Did you try starting up from the DVD. You might try that. If you want to erase and install, then you'll have to start up from the DVD. If you can, once the installation begins choose your language; open Disk Utility from the top of the next page; highlight your drive and choose Partition; assuming you want one partition select 1 (you must select a number here even if you don't want to change the number); and select GUID under the options (which also will format/erase your drive). Shut down Disk Utility and continue your installation.
Next, if you have access to another properly equipped Mac (see link), then you may be able to install using [firewire target disk mode.|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] Finally, [here is another interesting install possibility mentioned above.|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051227162152292] You should be able create your image file like this:
    a. Insert the DVD/CD;
    b. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    c. from the Disk Utility File menu select New Disk Image from Disk 1;
    d. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image, click Save; and
    e. Upon completion, Get Info on the .cdr file and lock the file.

  • Upgrading to Tiger using an external DVD Drive

Our computers at work don't have internal DVD drives. When we try to install Tiger using an external DVD we can't get past the restart process. We insert the DVD into the external DVD drive and restart our computers. Once the computer restarts, we double-click the Tiger DVD and it once again tells us to restart. My questions is....Can you upgrade to Tiger using an external DVD drive or should I request the CDs from Apple for the upgrade?
    Thanks,
    Devra

    Hi Devra,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Be aware that you CANNOT boot from an external USB-drive: Don't start up from an external USB device. You have to use an external firewire drive. Then insert the DVD and reboot while holding down the Option-key. Select the DVD in the external firewire drive as boot volume.
You also might want to follow this procedure: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist . It also covers potential install errors due to outdated firewire-drive firmware.

  • EMac and FCE using an external firewire hard drive as a Scratch Disk

I am about to purchase a new hard drive for use with FCE as a scratch disc.
I am looking for people who are "actually" using an external firewire hard drive as a scratch disc with FCE on an eMac.
I am interested in the following info.
    1. What Make, Model, size HD are you using?
    2. What rpm speed and cache size?
    3. Any problems? Crashed HD's? Working good?
    4. Do you have any other firewire devices plugged into your eMac?
I blew up 3 eMacs last year. Apple could not figure it out or anyone else.
I was using a Lacie P3 250/8mb firewire drive as a scratch disc.
    Thanks in advance.
    eMac 1.25ghz/1gb RAM/160gb HD/Superdrive   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    1. What Make, Model, size HD are you using?
I have two LaCie Porsche drives, one 160 GB and another 250 GB (more like 159 GB and 233 GB in actuality).
    2. What rpm speed and cache size?
They're both 5400 RPM if memory serves me. The 160 drive has 2 MB cache and the 250 has 8 MB cache.
    3. Any problems? Crashed HD's? Working good?
The 160 GB drive caused me some problems, but I'm chalking most of that up to a bad FireWire cable. LaCie replaced the cable for free, and I haven't had any significant problems.
    4. Do you have any other firewire devices plugged into your eMac?
Since I've got a 15" PowerBook, I'm limited to 1 Firewire bus, so the two drives, a LaCie DVD burner, and my Sony Handicam are all daisy-chained together. Having the Handicam on the bus tends to slow things down, but I can certainly capture to the drives with no problems. If I'm doing a lot of editing, though, I'll unplug the camera to speed up the bus.
I use the 160 GB drive primarily for backup, storing finished projects, and storing stock footage. The 250 GB drive is used solely for video capture and render.
The only thing I might caution you with is that the LaCie Porsche drives are rather picky about how they get turned on and plugged into the FireWire bus. You need to plug the power in, turn them on, and THEN plug in FireWire -- it won't work if you have FireWire plugged in when you turn them on. It's not a big issue, as long as you're aware of it. (It could be that my PowerBook is a little wonky, too.)

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

You should have no problem using the external optical drive. As for the external HD, you'll need to format it properly, depending on whether you want to use it with a Windows machine as well as your MacBook Pro.

  • Compatible External DVD-Rewriter Drives

Im been interested in getting an external DVD-Reweriter drive for a while now and were wondering if anyone could list me some compatible ones and where i could get them from in the UK. Iv seen a few around but wasnt sure if they would be compatible, desperately need one for data back-up considering i only have a combo drive on my MacBook!
    Cheers in advance, Scott

This isn't an exhaustive list, but I have a Sony DRU-120A in a generic external Firewire enclosure made by ADS. There are newer faster burners out there, but this drive worked fine with my Macbook running OSX 10.4.10. I downloaded the Ubuntu Linux 7.10 live DVD ISO and used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the ISO to a DVD-R disc.
OSX did not support non-Apple drives for burning until 10.4. For the older OSX releases, a program like Roxio's Toast is needed to support non-Apple drives.
I like the idea of using an external burner. Discussion threads have posts with users having problems with superdrives not burning correctly after only a few months of operation.

  • Can I install my OS on new external dvd/cd drive

My hard drive died at the same time as my internal cd DVD drive. So I'm thinking of buying the OWC Mercury Pro Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Pioneer DVR-218L
External DVD/CD Writer (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRF82SD22B/) but need to know if it's going to work automatically. Obviously I can't install it if my OS isn't even installed!

You can't boot the computer from a external DVD drive.
If you can find another model Mac just like yours, then c boot off your installer disk and HFS+ format a external drive and install OS X onto it, you can take that and hold option boot the sick Mac from.
Also once you get the internal drive replaced, you can use that external drive to Carbon Copy Clone the OS right onto the internal drive, no need for a internal DVD drive replacement, then you can use the external DVD drive.

  • External DVD/CD Drive?

Not sure if this is the right place to post... but, recently my Mac's DVD Drive has stopped working, and the repair people said it would cost about $200+ to fix it cause of the felt or something like that. Instead, I was thinking about getting an external CD/DVD Drive, one that can read and burn. My sister also got an XP Laptop that has no CD Drive, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any External CD/DVD Drives that are compatible for both Mac and PC? Thanks a bunch!

I am also looking to use an external DVD drive with my macbook. I recently upgraded my G4 tower to a faster dvd writer and have an exter drive now. I also have an old Sony Spressa USB cd writer from when I had an old imac. I tried putting the dvd drive in that case and tried to fire it up, but it would not see it. IS there any way to make this old case work? I had considered putting my ned faster drive into the case so I could use it with both computers, but just can't figure out how to make it work, if it even will.

  • Play movies from commercial DVD disks using an external DVD player?

Is it possible to play movies from commercial DVD disks using an external DVD player on Mac OS X 10.5.6? Thanks.

You might not need to install Tiger. If you pop in the installer DVD there might be the DVD Player under Additional Software/Applications. Then you can install that and watch DVDs.

  • In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro

In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro?

To do what? Yes you can connect a USB flash drive to the system and if it has the Recovery HD files on it you can boot from it. If it has the OS X install files on it you can boot from it. If it is large enough to contain a Time Machine backup on it you can restore your system from it.
So what do you want to do with the USB thumb drive?
