Using another laptop as an external display?

I haven't purchased the new macbook yet but was wondering if I can use the dvi cable to another laptop (pc lenovo with a graphics card) and have dual monitors (not replicas)to I have a two monitor desktop.

Yes.
Take a look under "Graphics and Video Support" HERE and you will see that an extended desktop up to 1920 x 1200 is supported.

  • Using one laptop as an external display for another?

The title says it all really, can this be done?

Not directly, no. But you can approximate the function with Screen Recycler. I haven't tried it myself, but it's worth a look.

  • Thunderbolt - Using the macbook as an external display

Hey, just wondering if Im able to use my macbook as an external display for my imac instead of my imac being used as an external display for my macbook? Im using thunderbolt to connect them.
    Cheers

No. Only iMacs currently support that via Target Display Mode. You can use a utility such as ScreenRecycler or a VPN utiility to display the screen via the USB port, but it will be quite slow. You can also use Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences.

  • IDEA: add a USB Standard-B connector to use any laptop as an external hard disk

    Hello Lenovo,
Here is an idea for you:
Add to your laptops a USB Standard-B connector with the following functionality:
When the power of the laptop is OFF,
you can connect the laptop to another laptop using this connector,
and use the internal harddisk of the laptop as an external harddisk for the other laptop.
    Regards
    Bogdan

From a normal external drive, no, it's not possible. The only device that would approximate this sort of functionality that I've heard of would be the Seagate GoFlex Satellite:

  • Deactivate laptop screen with external display attached

    Hi guys,
Once upon a time when you connected a powersource, peripherals and external monitor to your MacBook (Pro/Air) you could then open the laptop to allow for better cooling (useful) without activating the laptop's built-in display thus staying in single-screen mode.
However, since Lion you can't. Whichever way you try, fly, walk on your hands or smash your head into a wall Lion will always always activate the laptop's display when you open it up.
Anyone got a Clu how to get the old behaviour back?

    1. Potential solution: Apple wants your forum feedback
Please see a post in the following thread and reply to it as you wish. Apple has now reportedly requested that we provide evidence in support of our desire to have the "open lid with screen off" option reinstated (eg significance of operating temperature differences, reduction in wifi reception, etc). They may then address our concerns with a Lion update.

    2. The madness of magnets
This is getting very worrying. It's madness that Apple owners feel obliged to experiment with passing magnets over the top of their premium-priced computers and sticking them on here, there and everywhere in the hope of finding short-term workarounds. The sooner this problem is fixed at source (ie within Lion), the better.

  • Using a TV as an external display

I bought a Vizio 28" TV to use as an external display, but the best resolution is only 1360 x 768, which makes everything on the screen very large, and negates the reason for upgrading from an Acer 23" monitor to the Vizio 28" TV.
Is the problem my graphics card, or will a TV with a higher resolution work? There is a Samsung 32" TV which offers a 1920 x 1080 full HDMI resolution. I would have to get an HDMI adapter to use it, but that is no problem. What I wonder is if that would do the trick so that everything on the screen isn't way toooooo big. The cost of a TV is so much less than a comparable size computer display, and I don't do work that needs the equivalent of a retina display.
My husband has a late 2011 MacBook Pro and is using a 32" Elements TV as his display, and he does not have this problem. Perhaps the difference is graphics cards is the reason. My System Preferences Display does not have the Optimize For dialogue box, as he does on both his external ELEFW328 and his internal display, so I cannot change the resolution of my Vizio external display. Would appreciate any thoughts you have.

    Hi
I don't know about your problem, sorry. How about asking in the Macbook Pro Forum, they may know something.

  • Using my Macbook with an external display

I would like to buy this 23" LED display:

I currently have a Macbook 13" aluminum unibody with the Mini Display Port. I'm not sure what cable connector and adaptor I would need to use this monitor to its best potential. HDMI? DVI? DVI-D? VGA?? I have never set up an external display before.
I would also like to be able to use the wireless keyboard and magic mouse. I would like my Macbook to act as the brains and have it closed sitting under my desk connected to my display and wirelessly use my keyboard and mouse over bluetooth. Is this type of set up possible?

HDMI and DVI will give you the best picture. Here's the various types of Mini DisplayPort adapters on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_2_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mini+ displayport&sprefix=mini+displayport&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amini+displayport
Yes you can use it in clamshell mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
After you get your MacBook connected to the monitor and both screens working in System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab on the MacBook screen. Do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. When you disconnect from the monitor your Menu Bar and Dock will automatically change back to the MacBook.

  • Using an iBook as an external display

I have an intel iMac (the first intel iMacs) running leopard 10.5.7 and was wondering if there is any way of connecting my iBook to it to be used as an external display? My iBook is running Panther. I got it working a while ago using a vnc client but it was really laggy and slow. I was wondering if theres any way of doing this possibly using firewire?

If your expectation is for the video using ScreenRecycler to be as fast as a real display, then it will seem slow. 100Base-T data transfer speed (even if you actually get close to that theoretical max speed) is very slow compared to data going over a real video connection to a real display. So you should not expect to be able to play videos smoothly. What that second screen is quite userful for is to display windows that remain mostly static. For example, you can put tool palette windows (for various programs that use such tools) on that screen. I use it to show my main Mail window and browser windows with things such as stock quotes and news headlines.

  • Am using another laptop with older ffox. Desktop updated to ff 5 yesterday and now crashes so soon that I can't complete the process of seeking help on that machine

using another PC because ffox 5 crashes so quickly and frequently that I can't complete this reporting process on the other machine. The signature code that appeared was nahojit:CodeAlloc::addMem()
and one of the Crash IDs is shown below - I h ope I have copied it correctly.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Use PB G4 as an external display?

    Hi All,
Just bought a PM G5 but haven't got a display yet. Is there a way to connect it to my PB and employ the later as a display only??? I just want to access the system profiler of the G5 and verify the hardware details. I foolishly assumed I can do that in target disk mode but proved wrong indeed - running the PB G4 in target disk mode permitted to operate the OS and the software on G5 but under System profiler I get the PB details.
    Any ideas?
Thank you in advance for the help.

Try ScreenRecycler (have not used it, but seems to be what you are looking for):
    ScreenRecycler Readme
    DESCRIPTION
Many Mac users have a spare computer sitting right next to their main computer on their desk including a nice display. ScreenRecycler now enables you to use this spare computer as second display for your Mac. You can even use an idle machine for that purpose.
It’s like a dual monitor setup without the need to buy an additional monitor.
Just start ScreenRecycler on your Mac then connect to ScreenRecycler via VNC from your old machine.
Use any machine as additional monitor on your Mac !

  • Anyone used another iMac as a second display?

I was thinking about getting another display for some more realistate while i'm editing and was trying to make it as asthetically pleasing as possible when this idea struck me. Why not find a broken or abandoned iMac out there and use it as a second display. Doesn't have to have anything in it except the display i just think it would look really nice having them side by side. Has anyone seen or done this? Any idea what the ouput from the monitor to the motherboard is? Anyone have an iMac to donate to my cause?

If you had a working iMac, you can use this clever app to make it into your second display over a network connection and VNC.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
I was thinking the iMac G4, with its infinitely adjustable swing arm would make a great second display. You can probably get one of those (working) in the 17-inch size for less than $300.
I use Screen Recycler to give my iMac a third display (on an old PC laptop running Ubuntu Linux).

  • Can I use another computer as a external harddrive for time machine?

I have a mac mini from a few years ago and it is never used. I was wonder if it could be used as an external hard drive for time machine. If this can be done how do I go about setting it up for this type of useage?

Thanks for your reply. I looked at the Troubleshooting, but can't find my exact problem. It is as follows:
I use a new iMac running Snow Leopard with a 500 GB external WD drive.
-I looked the other day to find that time machine had failed, and when I looked at the backups, there had not been a successful backup since September 2009. I think this is when I installed Snow Leopard...
-I went to run a backup, and it failed, saying I did not have room (I have about 220 GB to backup)
-I decided to format the external hard drive and try again from scratch.
-I began getting an error 11, and specifically -8062 and -36 (as examples) which specifically list files that it could not copy.
-I reinstalled snow leopard from disk.
-I excluded time machine from spotlight as recommended in some forums
-I started ommitting some of the files that were listed as not being bale to copy, but now its into my music, and that's half the reason I back up.
I am now backing up to laptop as above post, and if that works, I will conclude that the External HD has seen its day.
If I get the same errors, I will conclude (nervously) that my computer has issues.
Here is an example of an error message:
    Error: (-8062) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/Shared/Music/Compilations/(album name)/(song name).mp3 to /Volumes/Time Machine 20100504/Backups.backupdb/Riskin's Computer/2010-05-04-222232.inprogress/F9243DA..(many letters and numbers)...D19/Macintosh HD/Users/Shared/Music/Compilations/(album name)/(song name)
then below in another message says:
Copy stage failed with error: 11
    Backup failed with error: 11
I get this same original error with different files, and with different error numbers.
Apple support told me that by formatting external drive, and reinstalling snow leopard, they were 99.9% sure it would be fixed, but it is not.
    Frustrated,
