Using another switch or router with TC???

Do you use another ethernet switch or router with an integrated ethernet switch with your TC??? How do you have things setup?
BTW: I'm running out of physical ethernet ports and I need to use Vonage...
R

If you're out of LAN ports then yes, you need a switch. Plug it into your TC and plug other stuff into the switch. Simple.
When buying a switch, remember one of its ports will be occupied by the connection to the TC. For example, if you're using all three TC LAN ports, buying a five port switch results in a net gain of only three ports: one of them is needed for the uplink, and the one you had to unplug from the TC must now be connected to the switch... three remain.
Fortunately they're not expensive.

  • Branch office setup with L3 switch and router with IOS security

    Hello,
I am in the process of putting together a small branch office network and I am in need of some design advise. The network will support about 10-15 workstations/phones, 3-4 printers, and 4-5 servers. In addition we will eventually have up to 25-30 remote users connecting to the servers via remote access VPN, and there will also be 2-3 site-to-site IPSec tunnels to reach other branches.
I have a 2911 (security bundle) router and 3560 IP Base L3 switch to work with. I have attached a basic diagram of my topology. My initial design plan for the network was to setup separate VLANs for workstation, phone, printer, and server traffic. The 3560 would then be setup with SVIs to perform routing between VLANs. The port between the router and switch would be setup as a routed port, and static routes would be applied on the switch and router as necessary. The thought behind this was that I'd be utilizing the switch backplane for VLAN routing instead instead of doing router-on-a-stick.
Since there is no firewall between the switch and router my plan was to setup IOS firewalling on the router. From what I am reading ZBF is my best option for this. What I was hoping for was a way to set custom policies for each VLAN, but it seems that zones are applied per interface. Since the interface between the router and switch is a routed interface, not a trunk/subinterface(s), it doesn't seem like there would be a way for me to use ZBF to control traffic on different VLANs. From what I am gathering I would have to group all of my internal network into one zone, or I would have to scrap L3 switching all together and do router-on-a-stick if I want to be able to set separate policies for each VLAN. Am I correct in my thinking here?
I guess what I am getting at is that I really don't want to do router-on-a-stick if I have a nice switch backplane to do all of the internal routing. At the same time I obviously need some kind of firewalling done on the router, and since different VLANs have different security requirements the firewalling needs to be fairly granular.
If I am indeed correct in the above thinking what would be the best solution for my scenario? That is, how can I setup this network so that I am utilizing the switch to do L3 routing while also leveraging the firewall capabilities of IOS security?
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Austin

    Thanks for the input.
    1. I agree, since I have only three to four printers, they need not be in a separate VLAN. I simply was compartmentalizing VLANs by function when I initially came up with the design.
    2. Here's a little more info on the phone situation. The phones are VoIP. The IP PBX is on premise, but they are currently on a completely separate ISP/network. The goal in the future is to converge the data and voice networks and setup PBR/route maps to route voice traffic out the voice ISP and data traffic out the other ISP. This leads up to #3.
    3. The reason a router was purchased over a firewall was that ASA's cannot handle routing and dual ISPs very well. PBR is not supported at all on an ASA, and dual ISPs can only be setup in an active/standby state. Also, an ASA Sec+ does not have near the VPN capabilities that the 2911 security does. The ASA Sec+ would support only 25 concurrent IPSec connections while the 2911 security is capable of doing an upwards of 200 IPSec connections.
Your point about moving the SVI's to a firewall to perform filtering between VLANs makes sense, however, wouldn't this be the same thing as creating subinterfaces on a router? In both cases you are moving routing from the switch backplane to the firewall/routing device, which is what I am trying to avoid.

  • Is it possible to use a third party router with BT...

    Hi all,
I currently have BT Infinity & Unlimited calls on my package, but I use a third party router, namely a Netgear WNR3500L in place of my original v2 Infinity Home Hub.
Now, my question is this: Do I have to use a Home Hub with Vision, or would I be okay using my current setup?
I do realise that if I use a third party router, I won't get support from BT.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I use a netgear N600 router with Infinity 1

I have searched various forums etc. with mixed success so am hoping that someone here can give me an idiot's guide to connecting to the internet using my netgear N600 router rather than using the BT Homehub 5. BT say that I can do it (despite my router being set up for ADSL and the HH5 being set up for VDSL) but that they can't tell me how! They sent me an email with various details I would need but I can't see where most of them need to be added when I connect to the netgear set up wizard. What I could see I filled in but when I tried to connect the netgear genie told me the ADSL cable wasn't connected. Can anyone give me a step by step guide of what to do please? I would be very grateful. Thanks

I just have the homehub 5 - I have seen various complicated descriptions elsewhere explaining how to use the HH5 as just a modem or how to just connect directly with the Netgear but all have been a bit over my head!
The HH5 cannot be used as a stand alone modem. You could use the Netgear as a simple wireless access point, but you would lose most of the functions, and would be better off using a proper wireless access point.
You cannot use the Netgear as a router, without a modem.

  • Is there a real increase of performance using a 802.11ac router with a MacBook Pro 13 Retina?

    Hi guys!
First of all, sorry for my english. I'm trying to improve myself!
I would like to know if could be a smart choice to change my router with a "802.11ac" router. Is there a real increase of performance?
Right now i'm using a 10mb in download and 10mb in upload connection (fibre optic).
    Thank you!

  • Is it possible to use an Airport Extreme router with AT&T 2Wire modem/router?

My AT&T 2Wire modem/router does not have great range, speed, or compatibility with my Macbook and iMac.  I bought an Apple Airport Extreme to try to remedy my problem, however, I did not realize it was purely a router.  Is it possible to use the 2Wire modem/router as just a pure modem and connect it to the Airport Extreme?  Would it be more beneficial to purchase a new modem that does not have wireless functionality?  I have looked at previous posts but couldn't find any definite answers.  Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!  Thanks!

The easiest route to take here would be to simply turn off the wireless function on the 2-Wire modem/router and then configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to provide a dual band wireless network.
If the 2-Wire performance shortcomings are the result of other wireless interference issues at your location, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme may not perform any better, wireless wise.  It's not possible to know things like this in advance....more of a case of you won't know until you try.
In theory, it might be possible to configure the 2-Wire product as a simple modem...but I doubt that AT&T would be willing to tell you how to do this or provide support in the event of problems.
It's getting to be hard to find a simple DSL modem these days, and even if you do, it will have to be re-configured as a Bridge to work correctly with the AirPort Extreme, so that complicates things as well.

  • Using an Airport Extreme router with PC.

I was told that I could use the Apple Airport Extreme router with my PC - but I can't seem to figure it out.  Any suggestions to get started?

Sorry to be so ignorant when it comes to this type of stuff.  I have a laptop (Dell) and a home computer (PC).  The Apple man told me all I had to do with my previous router was unplug it and plug in the Extreme and it would walk me through the steps.  It didn't.  I think I may have changed some settings on the PC.  Now I can't even get the previous router to work so I'm hardwired in on my laptop to even get here.
Do I need to hardwire in the PC, download the above utility, then try to hook up the Extreme router?  How do I make it "secure" or locked so no one else can use it other than ones with the key code?
Thanks so much for the above information.  Going to try it now.

According to this page on the D-Link website about your product, the router includes a print server for Windows and that the software is for Windows only.

Often when I open a local web, I get two webs opened. I use command W on the undesired one and then resave.
    This doesn't always work.
I also notice that iWeb suddenly quits with a large page of codes that ask me to relaunce or quit iWeb.
None of these problems cause me to lose work or stop me from using iWeb but is annoying.

  • Can I use the WNDR3800 Netgear router with OS X 10.4.11?

I just got a WNDR3800 Netgear router and I have not been able to get it to work. I have a PowerPC G5 iMac running OS 10.4.11 . The system requirements on the box includes Mac OS, no version specified. So I assumed it would run with my OS version. Am I wrong?

It should work fine with a wired connection, without complications (unless you are intentionally using special settings on the router).  Make sure it is set up, as Steve mentioned, with the standard Configure Using DHCP setting in System Preferences Network pane (for Ethernet).  That's the default setting, so you should not need to change anything.
Also, your cable should be at least Cat-5e quality.  Cat-5 may work, but the achieved speed may suffer if the iMac and router are both capable of gigabit Ethernet.  Make sure it is not a really old cable.  In any case, be sure to try a different cable, in case the one you have been using is bad.
    Other things to try...
In System Preferences Network pane, look at the sidebar with the list of network services.  Make sure Ethernet is listed first (at the top of the list).  There is a command to Set Service Order.  I don't remember precisely the procedure for 10.4 (Tiger).  If there is a small gear icon under the sidebar, click it (that's where the command is in the current Mac OS X).  Or you may just need to drag the items on the sidebar list directly, to the order you want.  After the change, click the Apply button.  This setting determines the order in which network services are tried, when you startup and log in.  You want Ethernet to be tried first.  You may want to restart after making a change.
In the same pane, you can also try removing any network services that you do not need.  Select the item and click the minus sign at the bottom of the sidebar.  You can always put them back later using the plus sign.
If you keep AirPort on the list, but do not use it regularly, you can try turning it OFF when it's not being used.
If all of that fails, try setting up a new Location in System Preferences Network pane.  The new location will use default settings as the starting point, so you can try setting up the Ethernet connection again, from there.

  • Can I use my Airport Extreme router with Mountain Lion?

I purchase my Airport Extreme about 2-3 years ago. My Internet service- Verizon, provides the modem. When I inserted the installation disc that came with the router I got an error message on my laptop saying that the systems were incompatible with one another.
I looked ror an airport update to resolve this but found nothing.
    Can anyone offer some advice?
Not being much of a Techie, I'm a bit afraid of just charging in and taking my chances.
    Thanks for the help.

Mountain Lion has already installed the latest version of AirPort Utility for you.
Look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility.
You can trash the old installation CD as it no longer useable.

  • Super slow connection when using additional linksys SD205 router with WRT54G

    Hi there,
I have a WRT54G that distributes my cable modem's internet connection. All my wired and wireless connections work perfectly.
I recently got a Linksys SD205 5 port switch and connected it to a wired port on my WRT54G router, then connected 3 network devices to this 5 port switch (a mac running OS10.4.10, a pc running winXP SP2, and a network printer).
The problem with this setup is that my internet connection has now slowed to an absolute crawl - if it works at all.
I've tried switching cables but nothing makes a difference. Plugging directly into the WRT54G eliminates the problem - network speed goes back to normal.
What am i missing here? Shouldn't this type of setup just work? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks
    Brendan

The WRT54G firmware is version 8. I just upgrade to v8.02. and now everything's working fine. thanks for reminding me to do the obvious

I've just had my BT Infinity install completed this morning. I'd really like to use my existing NETGEAR ProSafe SRXN3205 router in conjunction with the OpenReach modem instead of the BT Home Hub 3.
I'm struggling to get it to work. I've reset my NETGEAR to factory defaults, then entered the username "[email protected]" in the appropriate field on the NETGEAR's configuration.
Still no joy. Anyone got this same setup and working and can offer some assistance?

  • Why does my 8250 pixma printer randomly show up as "not connected"?? using BT wifi homehub router with my retina pro (mountain lion)

am getting fed up with having to reboot router and or printer everytime I want to print!!
printer clearly is connected as it shows up in the system but only by rebooting everything will it start up and print
beleive it might be firewall related ??

Well IMHO any product that has the Norton name on it will never ever be installed on any of my computers, Mac or PC. Some say the newest versions of Norton sftware is not like it was only a few years ago. that being the biggest Resource Hog ever written.
But in the end you really don't need that software on your Mac at all. Personally I don't run any Anti Whatever software on any of my computers, Mac or PC, and Have Never Been Infected with Anything.
So I suggest the first thing you do is uninstall that Norton POS software then test. I hope that clears it up. If not you are back to OS X losing the connection between the computer and rinter on your network.
One thing you should look at is giving the printer a full time Static IP address and or locking in a DHCP allocated IP address by setting your router to always assign that IP to the printer and that is done by the printer MAC address (That is Media Access Control address not a Mac computer address) that is IF your router has that feature.
