Using Aperture 3.51 I am having frequent crashes and freez ups when editing Canon raw files?

HI,
I have an IMac with 4 G of Ram and am using Apeture 3.51. When trying to edit CS2 raw files I experience frequent crashes and freez ups of the whole computer. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

  • Is anyone else having frequent crashing with iphoto 11 while editing photos?   We have 2 imacs (2007) and 1 Macbook pro (2010) and all three exhibit the same spinning rainbow wheel and crash after 3-7 edits.

    all macs are running 10.6.7
    all have 4gb ram
I saw some posts about the early intel nvidia issues, but the fix mentioned was 10.6.7 which we already have.
same library worked perfectly before iphoto 11.

  • Lower quality when opening canon raw w/ aperture instead of canon software

    hi,
i just shoot a two days performance with a canon 5d, raw files and imported successfully all images into aperture. at first everything looks good but if i use the canon digital photo professional software that came with the camera i get better saturation, contrast, and detailed images. the difference is very visible if i use photoshop (which i always do).
why is aperture not having a similar quality images when opening canon raw files?
is there anything i can do to make my workflow easy. i feel now that i have to use aperture only to select the best images. when i got my selection, i reopen the selected raw files (from the memory cards) using canon software, and then transfer all converted raw's to photoshop.
any ideas to make my workflow lighter without compromising quality?
    Thanks

    ejamas,
A few things to keep in mind -
*DPP vs. Aperture: Image previews when images are not at 100% -> DPP will appear much sharper/crisper then they actually are. You need to view at 100% to see the image accurately. Aperture will appear softer than they actually are (especially in comparison to DPP). Again, you need to view at 100% to get an accurate sense of how the image will look.
*As others have said. If you've customized the settings in your 5D then DPP will honor those. Aperture will not. That's the case with any third-party raw convertor.
*Images in a third-party convertor (Aperture, ACR, C1, Lightroom, etc.) will never match the OEM convertor (DPP, Nikon Capture, etc.) exactly. They use different color engines.
*Your findings to not mesh with my experience per se. I shoot with 1Ds M 2's and have found Aperture, in general, to be the way to go. The color is excellent, the tonal range far exceeds that of DPP and the controls in Aperture have far more finesse than anything in DPP. It's not as crash prone as DPP and if Aperture does crash you don't loose your work from that session (in DPP you loose anything done since your last save). Like any raw convertor you need to learn it inside and out before you draw any conclusions about it.
*I assume you are working on a color calibrated monitor and have all your color management ducks in a row?.....

I have no idea whether there is a causal relationship but since moving to Lion and iCloud, my iMac has become so unresponsive that I wind up having to crash and restart most of the time.  This is true regardless of the app I am using at the time.
The specs of this iMac are:
iMac 27 inch, late 2009 model with a 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gig 1067 Mhz DDR3, using OSX Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
I have Mackeeper installed and according to the scans I have run, everything is fine. No virus, no junk files . . . no problems at all . . .
Except that for all practical purposes, my computer isn't working.
I am nearly totally deaf and live in an isolated, rural area of NW Missouri and this computer is what I mainly rely on to contact friends, relatives and business associtates!
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

    Ok ...
Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

  • Display a Canon raw file as shot in Aperture?

I believe a number of settings are saved along with the image in a Canon raw file, such as. White Balance, colour space, Saturation, Contrast, sharpness and picture style as well as a few more things. Is it possible for Apreture to display the image with these "as shot" settings? A previous piece of software I used to use on a PC called Breezebrowser displayed the image prior to import (conversion) with these as shot settings but allowed you to alter these if required. If this could be done then I would find it a good starting point before post production adjustments are made. Hope this makes sense.

The short answer is no you cannot - yet. The best way to accomplish this is to create a series of preset templates that you can lift from prototype images and stamp to your imported images as a set of baseline adjustments. If you like the way that the in-camera settings are rendered just shoot RAW+JPG for each of the settings and then match the RAW to the JPG for each different setting for your starting points.
I am not real familiar with Canon stuff but if the WB is rendered a little differently that is the biggest pain in Aperture because it is one of the only adjustments that are not relative, it's absolute - so unlike brightness, contrast etc. you can't bump it up a little or down a little with a preset you can only assign an absolute value.
Hope this was at all helpful.

  • Aperture 3.1 can't find/see my Canon RAW files when importing

Aperture 3.1 cannot see my CANON RAW files when doing import!!!
Do I really have to re-reference each image in the library if I have moved the library to a different volume? Images are not moved to the library, only referenced.

You don't want to re-import files if you move the library. You just need to reconnect the masters.
If you moved the whole thing over at once it should be easy; if you monkeyed with the folder names you could have a lot of work on your hands.

When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    I shoot only RAW - no JPEG-files except those visualizing the files on my memorycard or computer. I think i have to refine my question;
    1. I know there is possible to make B/W HDR-images.
    2. I know the best HDR images are based on RAW-files.
    3. When i transfer the images in question to a HDR software they change, so when i view them in the software (either Preview or the HDR software) they are suddenly viewed (and processed) in color.
    4. This never happend on my PC so i know it has to do  with either Finder or Preview.
    5. Do i have to make all my B/W HDR-images on the PC or is it a way for me to change how Finder/Preview show/alter my images?

  • Canon Raw File Transfer using Canon 7D / Lion / Aperture 3.2

Is anyone finding issues in unloading raw files with a Canon camera and the latest software?  I have been doing this successfully for some time using Aperture 3.1 with Snow Leopard.  I use a 13" MBP with 8GB of memory and a huge hard drive.  I upgraded to Lion and Aperture 3.2 and find that my Canon 7D doesn't transfer all of my pictures off of the camera.  The camera is connected via the USB cable that plugs directly into the camera.  I have found a workaround by re-importing off the camera and selecting the option to not download previously imported pictures.  Depending on the number of photos, I may have to do it up to 10 times to get all the pictures.  I have the latest Canon 7D firmware.  I'm able to successfully do this using Canon Utilities running on Lion.  Ironically, this same issue happens when I import into Aperture from the camera or from the hard drive.  After importing onto my hard drive using Canon software and getting all the pictures in one try, I then tried to import from the hard drive into Aperture but faced the same issue.  I think I have this isolated to an Aperture 3.2 issue with Lion and Canon 7D raw images.  I also thought that it might be due to lack of battery life on the camera or with large photo shoots.  Nope.  It happens as well with a small number of photos and a healthy battery.
Is anyone else running into this issue?  Thanks.

  • HT4906 i am using aperture 3.3.2 on the current os and cannot connect to photo stream, why not

why can I not use photo stream on my iMac?
    i am signed into icloud
in aperture I click on turn on photo stream ... it sais enabling and comes back with

You can still use PS using Aperture 3.3.2 and earlier but the window and its controls will likely be dimmed out in the iCloud pref pane, as its expcted 3.4
Good idea, Clem, but I am using Photo Stream on 10.8.2 with Aperture 3.3.1 without problems. Even switching between Aperture 3.3.1 and Aperture 3.4 does not cause a problem. The controls are active in Aperture 3.3.1, but right now it takes a long time for the Photo Stream to be delivered, after turning it on. There is too much traffic in the iCloud.

  • Frequent crashes in illustrator CS4 when performing undo

    Hello,
I have two employees using two relatively new Windows Vista computers and CS4.  They have frequent crashes of illustrator when they undo too quickly, or sometimes just undoing slowly will cause a crash.  It is only these two computers that are having the problem.  We have 3 other 32 bit computers that never have a problem, it is just the newer 64 bit computers.  I tried deleting the preferences but that didn't help at all.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    JT

    Wade,
Thanks for the input.  How do I get it to run as a 32 bit program?  I changed the compatability mode to Windows XP, but the problem is still occuring.  Is this the wrong way of going about it?
    Thanks,

  • Aperture 3: problem when re-processing raw files to the latest converter

After converting to Aperture 3, many of my Nikon D80 raw files are coming up with the message:
"This photo was adjusted using an earlier version of Apple's RAW processing."
Aperture 3 offers a "Reprocess" button next to the message. Every time I click it, the images gets messed up with a big spike in the highlight end of the green channel. Is this a bug? Anyone else seeing this?

I faced the same problem when importing from my card reader. I chose to save the A3 library on a removable disk. The importing took ages to finish, and then all the pictures had a green color. It said that the pictures were processed using an earlier Apple Raw processor, and I had the Reprocess button. I did that and nothing changed.
I restarted A3, and now my project has disappeared even though it is available on disk.
I opened the original library on my MB hard disk and the photos showed fine.
I'm going to retest this, by importing the pictures to the default A3 library, maybe it will then recognize my pictures and process them correctly.
EDIT: when importing to the default Aperture Library (not the one on a separate drive), it's very fast, correct, and no problems. I'll guess I'll have to backup the old way...

  • Aperture is crashing my whole computer when editing

I am a Photographer and so I have many RAW files on my Mac..
I use Aperture to edit, but in the last few days when I am editing a picture (zoomed in, skin smoothing or retouching) Ap will just close, the only warning being the coloured spinning ball.
Last night my whole computer just switched off whilst I was in the middle of editing, and this morning the screen went dark and an instruction came up to turn off the computer by holding the power button, and restart.
I've checked my RAM and there seems to be plenty.
It was just an issue exclusively to Aperture, but now I seem to be experiencing the spinning coloured ball when trying to use Safari.
    So something is amiss.
I was wondering if it just may be Aperture, in which case I was going  to export all the projects to the desktop and then uninstall and reinstall the software..
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!
As a photographer I will be lost if I can't edit!
    Thanks in advance.
