Using Aperture long trip with MB Air

I am a photographer and recently bought a refurb MB Air 11" from Apple. It is 1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of DDR3 and 3MB of cache. It uses Nvidia Gforce 320M video with 256mb. I am going on a very long trip overseas and bought this to take instead of my MBPro 17" main computer to save space and weight and also for the non volatile memory for downloaded key shots. My main processing tool is Aperture. Since the Air only has 128GB of main ram, I'll be bringing a 500GB Lacie Rugged remote USB drive as the main download tool to connect to the Air. I shoot Nikon and Lumix. Any hints or problems I should look out for? Any thoughts about migration to Lion and potential cloud back up? Thanks.

  • Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with 8800GT?

Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with the new 8800GT? I'm about to order a new Mac Pro and wonder if Aperture will get a speed boost with the 8800GT over the HD 2600XT. I've read many times that Aperture is very GPU dependent, but then I've also read, on Barefeats.com for example, that the graphics card really doesn't do that much of a difference after all.
For me, on my dual 2.0 G5 with 4.5GB and a X800XT, what's been most annoying with Aperture 1.5 has been the slow load times for raw images (15-20MB). But now with the quick preview mode in Aperture 2.0, that really isn't an issue any more.
Is the 8800GT worth waiting for, or should I just get the Mac Pro now with the HD 2600XT?

    Hi Don
I'm using Aperture 2.0 with the 8800GT. My system is the new MacPro 8 core 2.8GH with 10GB RAM. I'm shooting Nikon D3 lossless compressed RAW files. Approximately 12-14MB each.
I do not need to use the quick preview mode. Images open instantaneously, either fit to screen or 100%. All the image adjustments are shown with no time lag. My D2X uncompressed raw files,19MB, display in approximately one second with quick preview turned off.
I'm no MAC hardware expert so I don't know how much the speed is the result of the 8800GT but I'm just one happy camper.
    Hope this helps

  • Using Aperture 3.03 with a Drobo

I recently got Aperture 3 and imported my iPhoto into it (14,000 images 70 GIG). I chose to move the images into the Aperture library which by default built itself on the internal drive of my Macbook Pro based 'server'. (OS 10.6.4, 4 gig ram)
Once it was all working, I copied the whole Aperture Library to a 3 x 1 TB Drobo connected via FW800 with the notion that from then on I would add images straight to the Drobo so that the Masters and edits etc etc were all inherently redundantly protected. (my movies , iTunes Library are also in the Drobo and work fine). This way the internal server drive is just an OS ... if /when it dies it's easy to replace and the Drobo gives me lots of space plus room to grow!
Anyway, I opened the Drobo Library in Aperture and although it was slow, it worked. I scanned Faces, organized, made folders etc ... all fine. There were a couple of worrying pauses with a beach ball .... but on the whole it seemed a good way to keep my imaged safe without the endless backups of the past.
Just to confirm all my images made it over to the Drobo, I reopened the original library on the server drive. Looked like nothing was missed .... in the end I was going to delete it. But not yet.
Then I reopened the Drobo Library ... a message appeared saying Library File cannot be opened. Uh Oh. So I shut down the mac and rebooted.
    Kernel Panic. Ouch.
More testing : the server was fine (booted from another boot drive), the Drobo was fine (connected and worked on another computer), server drive ... well it also Kernel Panicked another machine so it had failed right?
Not so fast ... every diagnostic test (surface scans, controller etc etc) says it's fine. So I reformatted it, reinstalled OS 10. 6. 4 and it's been running fine for over a week ... serving movies and music from the Drobo perfectly. I haven't even tried to reopen the Drobo Aperture Library again... yet.
I can't help feel that the Aperture / Drobo combination had a hand in this mess. I've searched here and seen older Drobo issues, but can anyone tell me a way they are doing this currently that works? If I'm flogging a dead horse by locating the whole library externally (though I can't see why it would be a problem) let me know!
I see others have put their Masters on an external and the Library on an internal. I have them both externally right now (on the Drobo) is there a way to move the Library back to the internal, leaving the Masters on the Drobo?
    Learning curves.... what fun

    Thanks Allen
I tried reopening the Aperture Library on the Drobo again .... same message. File cannot be opened. So I tried to repair the Library as described in the manual. All repair/rebuilding options just resulted in a day of spinning beachballs ... no progress at all!
Wow, I can't believe that a Drobo could combine with Aperture to wreak such havoc! Of course I have several copies of my original iPhoto Library so I'm re-importing it to the server's internal drive.
Do you think I could safely point Aperture's Vault to the Drobo as a back up? Or is that problematic too?
And, if the server drive died, could a fresh install of Aperture really reconstruct the entire library from a Vault? The manual makes it sound easy enough, but it only took me 48 hours to completely hose an entire Aperture Library even after reading the docs! I don't fancy reading about "Vault errors" with all my photos at stake!
Of course I'll hang onto the original iPhoto Library .... but new imports into Aperture worry me now. It's frustrating that a Pro App (?) seems to have core stability/corruption vulnerabilities. I used iPhoto for over 8 years without a hitch ... and it isn't meant to be "Pro".
I just want one Library in one place that I can import images into and have reasonable confidence in it's integrity without having to constantly clone files for back up, or worry about whether a back up will actually restore in 3 years, or if the backup actually happened .........
Does anyone know if Aperture deals better with a hardware RAID 5 over Firewire? Is it specifically the DROBO at fault here?
    Thanks
    Lee

  • You can use the final cut with macbook air 11 x 4GB with external hard drive

I can install and use the final cut X, with macbook air 11", 4GB with an external hard drive, and them transfer to the mac pro

No, not directly. You would need to transfer your data from your iPad to your Mac and then back it up to an external drive.

  • Long Trip with Location Enabled IT GOT HOT

    Hi
I just got back from vacation, I used Google Map with location enabled for the first time. I had to use the car charger as well with a low battery.
I had to use the phone and noticed it was to hot to use. I disconnected the car charger and disabled location and it cooled down within 10 minutes. Enough to use the phone.
I really don't know what to think. Was this phone not made to do what I just did on my trip............

Well if you leave maps open, then it will have to constantly being downloading data for the maps thus using data, thus using processor.
Second, charging the phone also creates heat (as charging any battery does). So combined, it just got hot.
Now the phone will alert you and turn off if it really gets too hot.
It wasn't really that you had location services on, but rather the fact you had maps open for long period thus having it keep refreshing map which requires processor to keep working and working at the same time as charging. But even though you said it was hot, it shouldn't get so hot you cannot really hold it.

  • Using a Solarmonkey Adventurer with MacBook Air (2010)

Can anyone tell me if you can buy a power attachment for the Macbook Air that has a USB connection at the other end?
I have just bought a Solarmonkey Adventurer from Powertraveller.com, this is a solar powered charger that has multiple adapters to charge all sorts of gadgets, ie: ipod, iphone, ipad, GPS, camera's etc etc .... I doesn't come with an adapter for the MacBook Air but it would need the standard end piece the connects to the computer but with a USB at the other end.
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers
    Sally

The end connection of your power device would tend to indicate that it's output is around 5 volts, which is far below the voltage requirement for the Air. As well, the devices you mention are far less demanding of wattage as well.
Simple answer... No, there is no USB to MagSafe connector, adapter, or cable available, nor would it likely work anyway, because of the aforementioned voltage/wattage issue.

  • How to use iPhone 5 earbuds with MacBook Air 13"

As far as I know it is possible to use the latest iPhone 5 earbuds for not only audio output, but also as a microphone, if the usage concerns the actual phone. I want to use it for my MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012, but they do not seem to work. I have checked the System Preferences > Sound > Input and the Input level only rises, if I actually click on the center of the earbud controls. Afterwards, while holding or releasing, the Input level goes down again and there is no input at all.
I am not keen on other people listening to my conversations (apart from my voice, which is inevitable), hence I am trying to get this to work, but I haven't found any solution.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, that IPHONE5  earphone headset / mic works on the newest Macbook AIR    see spec pic below:

  • Using Aperture with PS CS2 (Win) running in Parallels

Does anyone know if it's possible to use Aperture's "Open with External Editor" option with the Windows version of Photoshop CS2 runnning within Parallels?
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Ian is correct.
One option is to output to 16-bit TIF (set the preset to AdobeRGB vs. sRGB). Open this in CS2, adjust, save (still as 16-bit TIF and make sure "Maximize Compatibility is set to "Always"). Then, import this back into Aperture and regroup it into the stack (<Apple><Click> the images to group and then from the menu line, choose Stacks/Stack).
The good news is that I'm now down to around 2% of my images that go into CS2 for image adjustment purposes. If you are in a similar state then the above could be workable.

  • I'm going on a long trip. Is there an external battery for iPod?

I'm going on an 11 hour plane ride. My iPod 80GB may last 6 hours (movie watching). I did a seat search for airplane and there is not an outlet near my seat to recharge iPod. Is there an external battery or something that can be used on long trips so I can continue to watch movies?<

I just recently listed a few options in another thread. See here...

  • What will Apple do after they do not support iPhoto?  Will photo stream be eliminated?  I will no longer be able to use aperture, so have signed on with LR & PS.

What will Apple do after they do not support iPhoto?  Will photo stream be eliminated?  I will no longer be able to use aperture, so have signed on with LR & PS.

Just because Apple will no longer support IPhoto or Aperture doesn't mean that the versions that are still out there still won't work, function or still do what it is designed to do.
I do not like all of this offsite, Cloud service storage, anyways. I rather have easy, trouble free access to all of my data locally.
I am still planning on using the current versions of IPhoto and Aperture as I am not moving any time soon to Yosemite or any newer OS versions based on it. I still use a lot of legacy software that I simply can't afford to upgrade any farther.
Plus, I use other photo book sites other than Apple's own service, anyways, because these other services offer more products and are far more flexible than Apple's own print services.
