Using Aperture Photos in iPhoto

In using iPhotos Cards, I learnt that I needed to import Aperture Previews into iPhoto 11 to used them. That wasn't a size / storage concern as I was only making a few cards & only used a few images. I have been using Aperture almost exclusively since 2007, have 12k+ images there for my books & slideshows and closed off iPhoto (9.8k images) except for the occasional card, reprint of a book etc.
In making several 2013 calendars in iPhoto11, I would like to utilize many photos from various trips that are now completely in Aperture 3 - Italy, Oregon and other travels and the idea of importing several thousand & having in both libraries seems much but unable to see where I can share Aperture Preview images w/o importing.
Is that a correct assumption?
Thanks....Gene

Larry - thanks as I had NOT read that article. I have Aperture 3.4.3 and iPhoto '11 9.4.2 so I'm all set there. I had opened the libraries before in each application BUT misunderstood what could or couldn't be done in each application!
So if I now understand it, I can switch & open my Aperture library in iPhoto (and vice versa also) , have access to the particular project of photos I wish to use in Calendar & Letterpress Cards, make these Calendars & Cards, buy & send off to Apple's Printed Services? Since I don't plan on doing any editing work in iPhoto for these photos, those iPhoto '11 created projects are only viewable there?

  • Is there a way to use the photos from iphoto in a collage like the itunes artwork screensaver?

is there a way to use the photos from iphoto in a collage like the itunes artwork screensaver?

Yes except i would like it to look like the itunes album artwork screen saver does.  the itunes album artwork screen saver shows a bunch of squares and when one of the boxes changes it spins and goes to the next album artwork
what you have indicated above is kind of like a slide show where it shows you one of your pictures and zooms out to show you a collage version of another one of your pictures.  i would like it to be formatted similar to the way the itunes screen saver is.
if you click on itunes artwork on the same menu as shown in your last post, you will see what i am trying to achieve.

  • OK to use Aperture to maintain iPhoto Referenced Library

I have Aperture and iPhoto. We are an OSX and Windows household. But thanks to the Windows 8 debacle, my wife (the diehard Windows user) has abandoned her PC with all regard to photos and videos (viewing, editing, sharing). Now, I use Aperture most of the time, but my wife uses iPhoto 100% of the time. I manage all the imports with Aperture. (I currently have one referenced library that I use in Aperture of all files and a second default iPhoto Library that is managed but only has post-2010 files in it. Both created in their respective programs, if that matters.)
Coincidentally, we are also at a point where we need to quit adding photos/videos to the PC or we'll exceed its backup capacity.
Now that she is using the iMac, I would like to get the Library organized and minimize my workflow and eliminate duplication. I do not have enough contiguous disk space for single managed aperture library. I have avoided proceeding because iPhoto and referenced files are not recommended by most of the experts here, for well founded reasons. However, now that both apps can use the same library, and Aperture handles referenced libraries so much better... why not go referenced now? I can leave the pre-2010 files on the PC, and keep all the post-2010 imports on the iMac, all in one Library. The fact that nobody is getting into the files on the PC virtually eliminates all the problems I've had in the past.
    Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks for any thoughts on this, or hidden gotchas.

No assuming that you have the latest version of both iPhoto and Aperture so there is total interoperability between them

  • How can I use the photos from iphoto to display in contacts?

Contacts has a space for a photo.  At one time I knew how to populate this space with photos from iPhoto. Currently my choices are to use an icon or take a pic with the camera.
How can I add the photos from iPhoto to the choices for populating the "Contacts" image space for individual cards?

  • I created a slide show using my photos on iphoto can I burn this to a dvd with the music in the backgroun

I created a slide show using photos from iphoto and I was able to put it to music to view it on my mac. I am trying to figure out a way to download it or burn it to a DVD with the music in order that it can be given as a gift. Also is there a way to use multiple songs for the slideshow.
    thanks much

First if you slideshow requires more than one audio track go to iTunes and create a new playlist with the music you want.  You can take the total time of the playlist and divide by the number of slides to get the approximate playing time for each slide.
In iDVD go into the slideshow window and then click on the Audio button at the right.  Locate the playlist and drag it into the music bin at the bottom of the window.
Be sure that non of the audio tracks are DRM protected tracks from the iTunes store.  You won't be able to use them if they are.  And remember this is only for slideshows created by iDVD from still photos imported from iPhoto.

  • Using Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11 together

I was wondering how to use them together. I spent a lot of time on Aperture 3 for geotagging every photos + faces and, trying to import them back to iPhoto '11, means losing all those info and start back again.
I was wondering if there's a way for keeping the main library on Aperture 3 but being able to work on it through iPhoto '11.

Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
for geotagging every photos + faces and, trying to import them back to iPhoto '11, means losing all those info
use an Export preset in Aperture that includes location information. There is no way to share Faces, but you can use it as the basis for keywording.

  • Using aperture to update iPhoto EXIF data?

I recently went back and added geocoding data to a number of pictures in my iPhoto library (i.e. I used HoudahGeo to add the relevant EXIF tags to the "original" JPG/NEF files buried in the iPhoto library).
iPhoto lacks Aperture's "Update EXIF data based on master" functionality, so this data is still missing both from the iPhoto database (i.e. it still appears blank in the photo's "get info" window) and from the "modified" file's EXIF tags.
Is there a way I can use my copy of Aperture to make this update? (I'm still very much learning how to use this program, so sorry if the question is naive.) Is there a way to, e.g., "mount" an iPhoto library in Aperture, run the "Update EXIF" command and then have everything be exactly as it was in iPhoto, except for 3 updated EXIF tags on each photo?
Otherwise, has anyone else found a good way to retroactively geocode iPhoto pictures (without losing iPhoto albums, ratings, events, keywords, hidden-ness, etc.)?
    Thanks!

This is now easy to due in iPhoto -- thanks to the new "re-scan for location information" menu item added by a recent software update.

  • Move existing Aperture photos (from iPhoto) to Aperture's library's library

    Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I did something wrong tho, since now most of my photos in Aperture are still in iPhoto's library (all of these show the "iPhoto Original" keyword).
I want to have them all in my Aperture's library, but I put many time on Aperture's organization and don't want to have to import all from the very beginning. Is there any way I can move those files still in iPhoto's library folder to Aperture's library? I plan to uninstall iPhoto after that, that's why I want all photos in Aperture's library.
    Thank you

If the image is shown in Aperture, the image is in Aperture's Library.
The question is, where are the Master files on which the images in your Aperture Library are based.  (The keyword "iPhoto Original" tells you nothing about the location of the Master.)
Right-click an image.  Does "Show in Finder" appear in the pop-up menu?  If so, then your image has a Referenced Master (Referenced Masters are located outside the Aperture Library (the image is in the Library and has a pointer to its Master which is outside the Library)).  If not, your image has a Managed Master (the image, the pointer, and the Master are all inside the Aperture Library.
You can filter for images with Referenced or Managed Masters.  Also, most of the default Metadata Overlays include a Badge which will show you which images have Referenced Masters (as well as the status of the Master).
Since you (seem to) want to have all of your images' Masters be Managed (= inside the Aperture Library), simply select all images and execute the command "File→Consolidate Masters".  You can confirm that this has been done by using a Filter set to show all images with Referenced Masters.  It should show no images.
Once all of your Masters have been consolidated into your Aperture Library, you can safely delete your iPhoto Library.  You can also uninstall iPhoto is you wish.

  • Using Aperture along with iPhoto

    Hey.
I use iPhoto for my image importing... basically everything..
I got my canon xsi and i like to edit some of my pictures more professionally
i have photoshop too.. and i failed to learn to use..
so i was thinking of getting Aperture, and use it only for images that i want to edit.. and stay using iphoto for everything else!
is this stupid? Is Aperture really an effective editing program?
    Thanks

    Hi Joe Shaheen;
Personally I think that Aperture is a very good way to process my photos. I find that I am able to process a shot in a much short period of time then with anything else I have used. I especially like it for processing my photos I take in RAW with my D300.

  • Is it possible for one user to use Aperture and another iPhoto?

I have a new imac 21.5", 3.33ghz, 4gb and I was wondering if it is possible for me as admin user to handle camera downloads automatically with Aperture, and my wife as second user to use iPhoto as automatic camera destination? Any comments would be appreciated.

If you want to use the same account there are a number of possibilities:
    1. Set both Aperture and iPhoto to Do Nothing when a camera is connected. Then each one can launch their preferred app themselves. It's just one extra click.
    2. Use [Cameras|http://www.flexibits.com> to configure what happens when different cameras are connected.

  • Syncing Aperture Photos with iPhoto

I recently noticed that not all of the photos in an Aperture "smart album" were syncing with iPhoto. Out of about 400 photos, only 15 were syncing. I think I found out why. It seems that if I have selected "only show recent projects" in the top of the projects tab in Aperture, only the photos which are in shown projects will sync with iPhoto. When I go into the smart album in Aperture, all of the photos show up just fine even when I am only showing new projects, but when I go into iTunes and check off the smart album, it lists only a 15 photos (the photos in the albums that are currently showing).
Did I just discover a bug? Does anybody else notice this strange behavior? I find it odd that when I am only showing recent albums that this would prevent older photos in a smart album from syncing.
Has anybody found a workaround for this?

  • Can I create a movie trailer using still photos from iPhoto library

    Hey,
I am wondering whether I can create a movie trailer (like Epic Drama for example) using still images / photos from my iphoto library instead of using movie clips.
I have found out how to import photos in a normal project but I cannot do the same for a movie trailer project.
    THX
    Dimitris

    You can do this.
The trick is to convert your trailer to a project.
First, I would suggest going to the Project Library view and selecting your trailer. Then FILE/DUPLICATE and give the duplicate a name, like (Original Name - Backup).
Then, with the trailer selected in the Project Library, click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT.
Your trailer is now a project and you can add stills and use all the capabilities of iMovie.

  • Photos from Iphoto are turning pink

Hi Everyone. My son is trying to make a montage in IMovie HD 6 (we just got it). He's using still photos from iPhoto. The problem is perfect pictures are turning pinkish/red when he puts them in his template. I can't figure out what's going wrong. We're VERY frustrated.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

There's a bug in iMovie 6 that applies a red tint when importing BMP images — those with the .bmp extension. It occurs only when importing with the Ken Burns checkbox turned ON.
Save the BMP image as a JPEG before importing to iMovie and all should be fine.
iPhoto lets you Export the photo to another copy that uses the JPEG format.

  • How can I delete an event on an Ipad2, PHOTOS or Iphoto for IOS?

How can I delete a photo event on an IPAD2 using either PHOTOS or IPHOTO for IOS?
    Thanks

If the event is a synced event from iPhoto on your Mac, you have to deselect the event in iTunes while the iPad is connected to the Mac and with iTunes running and then sync - in order to remove the event from the photos app.
Synced photos cannot be deleted directly on the device. You must unsync the photos using iTunes on your computer.
