Using Apple Lossless in iMovie - good/bad idea

Will the use of Apple Lossless sound files in iMovie 5 have any consequences? My iTunes folder is almost exclusively uncompressed files so that is what I have to work with. I notice that my movie plays more jerky when I start adding sound. Will this go away when the movie is rendered? Unfortunately itunes makes it terribly difficult to manage both uncompressed music files and lossy mp3 or AAC on the same computer.

... I would like to have 2 mirrored libraries, one in apple lossless and one as AAC ...aaah, message understood!! You're an high-ender, my dead-old ears don't catch the differences any more, 128kB/aac is enough for me... ;-))
this is the iM forum, but... : you could create two smart lists, one showing anything bitrate<128, the other one for HiFi/HiEnd usage; or, you use tools as iTunes Library Manager which claims to handle 2 (or more) librarys... but to keep everything sync... no idea....- <scratching head>
back to my dryland: the sound/audio in a dv file is way behind the quality you 're demanding... indeed, I would create a playlist for my specific itunes project and export that as aiff... besides: that is exactly what I do with my projects, I have a library of ~6000 tracks, I do a "preview"/prehear (??) in ITunes, anything what could fit, drops into a playlist, in iM I have immediate access to that pl, I don't scroll thru my whole library... after finishing that project, the pl gets into trash....

  • Can't Import Songs To iTunes Using Apple Lossless Encoder

I have about 4,000 songs in FLAC format (which is a lossless format) on my external hard drive. I want to import them into iTunes using the Apple Lossless Encoder. I called Apple support and asked them how to do this, and they told me to go under "Preferences" in iTunes and chose to import using Apple Lossless Encoder.
I did this using Preferences>General>Import Settings, and then went to File>Add Folder to Library, however, it still imported my songs as AAC Audio Files. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

iTunes cannot read nor import FLAC files - not without third-party plugins, anyway, and I don't know of any that will allow iTunes to convert a FLAC file to another format - so I'm a bit confused as to the procedure you're following. If all you're doing is using the Add to Library command and choosing the FLAC files, it's quite possible that iTunes is misinterpreting the format and adding what is in reality an invalid link with erroneous format information.
If you have some sort of third-party plugin for FLAC for iTunes, please post that information and perhaps someone here can determine whether iTunes can do a conversion successfully.

What is the song capacity of a 4GB Shuffle using Apple Lossless?

Download the iPodage widget for your Mac Dashboard, it will calculate how many songs fit based on the information you put in on the size of iPod and the file format used. You can get it from Apple Downloads at this link: iPodage

  • Problems with sound quality when ripping using apple lossless

When ripping cd with apple lossless I have problems with parts of the songs falling out. It does not apply for all songs. I use a Mac Pro OS X 10.9.2  with iTunes 11.1.5. Does anyone know why this happens, and what I can do to prevent it from happening again?

    Hi Amy:
Sorry that the Color Setting idea didn't do the trick. Since the occurrence is separate, that is, seeing one color view using Elements and a different color view using email view. I still suspect this area.
Calibrating a monitor to me (as the saying goes), is easier said than done. You may want to do a web search using Calibrate Monitor, or similar search words. This will find some interesting websites on calibrating monitors you can read and try out. If you do change some settings, write down what your original settings are before hand, so if you make it worse, you can go back where you started.
There are two areas to calibrate the monitor.
    1. Using the monitor controls on the monitor itself.
    or/and
    2. Using the graphics card (software) control. Which is normally found (Win XP) DISPLAY PROPERTIES>SETTINGS>ADVANCED> then the TAB with your graphics card name.
    3. Actually there is a third one, which uses a very expensive device that connects to the monitor. At the moment this method escapes me. Mainly used by professionals and serious photo editing people.
    Good Luck!

  • Usb hard drive good/bad idea?

    greetings,
I was informed that it was a bad idea to attach a usb hard drive because it will be running(spinning/processing) at all times awaiting commands to whomever needs to access via network. furthermore adding that this would effect longevity of the hard drive as well as creating heating issues. he suggested that a better solution is to setup an extra computer(which i have access to) as a server with all my hard drives attached.
my goal is to allow all to access a single hard drive via network.
so my questions are: 1) is it true that a usb hard drive attached to the ap extreme will running 24/7? & 2) which is the better solution to allow all to access a hard drive a) usb hard drive attached to the ap extreme or b) create a server with the extra mac mini?
thank you in advance for your responses!

Ok, in case anyone is interested, done a little research, flash drives are fat 32 format, the hd is ntfs format, just on a whim i tried a hub as Jerry had mentioned above since I had one laying around, no difference, so I reformatted my hd to fat 32, put partial music library on the hd, will try it today. Another note to this, a few people have said that if music is spread over 8 folders, only the 8 will show up, also you will have to manually select the folder to be played through media source, solution here is 1 massive folder, I will try this as well.

  • Good/Bad idea: restore slightly older version of iTunes with Time Machine?

    Hi folks,
For years, my old but reliable Rio Cali mp3 player worked fine with iTunes and my Mac. All of a sudden, not only does iTunes not connect with the Rio, but it freezes/crashes the MacBook when I try! I've troubleshooted this several ways, including using different mini-USB sync cables (in case of short circuit) and even buying a much newer Rio Cali player, but same result. Then I searched the web, found that other Mac/iTunes 8.0.2 users have found the same problem ever since late November '08. Even though iTunes officialy says it's compatible with Rio Cali, it clearly is not.
So I'd like to go back to using 8.0.1 of iTunes (or perhaps 8.0). Can I use Time Machine to do this safely? All I want is the earlier version of iTunes, not the earlier version of all my iTunes music and App store app holdings! I know I can use Time Machine to restore for instance an MS Word document or my entire computer, but can I use it to restore just a single application, namely iTunes 8.0.1? What do I risk by trying? (I'd prefer not to screw up lots of other things).
    Many thanks!
    -- Josh
[PS Yes, I realize that it would be easier just to drop the old mp3 player. But it's nearly a one of a kind sports/athlete-oriented player -- rubberized and water-resistance-sealed for runners like me, useful logical hard buttons, and FM reception. iPod and nearly all other players fall short in each of these features which are important to me. Thanks for understanding.]

Ha! The manufacturer's support site? Rio went out of business a few years ago! Their websites still exist, but their last support posts about Mac iTunes compatibility are from 2004 and 2006. At that time, there was native compatibility, and there was also an iTunes plug-in which one could download and install in order to make the player and iTunes talk to each other (although I never needed it). That was back in the days of OS 10.2 and perhaps 10.3. That plug-in installer these days does nothing, it won't even finish running if one tries running it now. I know, since I've tried, and since I've thoroughly researched the other people and posts from Rio owners whose iTunes suddenly stopped working recently. I made a bug report to Apple, but who knows if re-establishing the compatibility is any kind of priority to them (doubt it). So I'm trying to handle this by using a slightly older iTunes version because I doubt there is any other fix.

  • Import Error when using Apple Lossless

Thanks to all in advance for their help. I have iTunes l0.1.1.4 running on several Windows 7 computers and am currently getting an error when I try to import a CD using ALC.
The error message says "Error occurred while converting the file "Song name". An unknown error occurred (-39)."
This also happens when I try to convert to using AAC. But as an experiment, I was able to import using either WAV or AIFF formats. I also can play CDs directly so I would assume hardware isn't the fault.
I do have another computer running XP and iTunes 10.1.1.4 and am able to import using ALC so my guess is there's something between iTunes and Windows 7 that's causing the issue.
Again, thank you in advance for any guidance and apologies if this has been covered in another string.

I think I may have stumbled onto my own solution. On the WinXP machine that was letting me import ALC successfully, I had my C:drive set as the destination for the import files. I changed that setting to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device and suddenly could no longer import using ALC. I reset back to the C:drive and it worked, confirming that the conflict was between iTunes and the NAS or my Network.
I then reset the destination on my Win7 machine to also use a folder on the c:drive as the file destination and that solved in there as well.
So, if anyone can shed light on why importing/compressing to ALC/sending to a non-c:drive location is causing a failure, I'm listening.
And hopefully this solution will help someone else along the way.

  • 300 requests per hour reading from Application scope Good/Bad idea

I am saving some html in application scope & reading with
    <cflock readonly.
Will it be a problem if more than 5 requests are made per
    second?
    Does deadlocks occurs with readonly-cflock?
    Thanks

While creating/changing application scope variables in a
lock, I think there must be an exclusive lock. You must be careful
not to set any shared variable such as application inside a read
    only cflock tag.
I also would suggest to check the usage of Application.cfc
and onApplicationStart method. You can set application default
variables and constants in onApplicationStart method in your
    Application.cfc.

  • Combining CPU(Critical patch Updates) with Year-End patches, good/bad idea?

    Hello all,
I hoping to get some expert opinion on some upcoming patches to our environment. We are 3 releases being on applying CPU's to our environment and it is that time of year where testing is needed for Year-end patches. Does anyone see any issues with combining the year-end and CPU's? Would it be recommended that we hold off on the applying CPU's because of not experiencing any major problems in our environement, then schedule to gradually get up to date once the year-end patches are in place?
The desire to install CPU's is to not fall too far being on the CPU's.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

My recommendation is to combine the CPUs with the rest of your patches. CPUs do not affect functionality - they patch security holes/issues in software. Since you will be testing for yearend patches, you can take advantage of this opportunity to also include CPU patches, else separate testing and downtime will be required for the CPU patches. This is the approach we have in our organization. We have yet to encounter an issue with this approach.

  • How do I Download from Itunes store using the Apple Lossless format?

I use my music on a home sterio and import locally from CD's to Windows using the Apple Lossless format only, to achieve the Highest quality sound. However, When I buy from Itunes store I can only get AAC format, which is low quality. How can I get Itunes to give me only Apple Lossless format?
Your help will b e appreciated.
    Thanks
    Phil

I do agree with what i have been said. I am a musician, i think AAC is definitely medium-low quality. I bought this year lots of AAC 256 for Itunes. I have been surprised. SO many times i need to go to the equalizer to counter-balance the weakness of this file format.
I advise you to do the following. Import a CD using Apple LossLess and then import a CD using AAC 256. You will see a HUGE difference.
Now i start to buy CD again in order to get the music Quality. Then i import my CDs to Itunes using Apple LossLess (920Kbps). You will ear that on Snares and Rides. Bass will sound more natural. Bass, Medium, Sharp will more balance with each other. You will hear instruments with more clarity especially when there are a lot of instruments. Because of that, you will not need to raise up the volume.
But more than anything... you will gain VOLUME in your files.
In general over the internet all the online music stores including Itune doesn't provide HD quality. AAC 256 is not enough. A track bought over Itune Store should weight 30 megabytes, not 5. And then you would decide to compress it or not.

  • Converting from Apple Lossless to MP3: loss of quality?

    Hi,
I have made the "mistake" of importing dozens and dozens of CD's using the Apple Lossless encoder. Nothing bad about the encoder, on the contrary. But my iPod is now full.
Is there a way I can convert all these tracks to MP3? Will there be a loss of quality from the re-conversion beside the one inherent to MP3? (since we are not starting from the original CD) And will I have to re-create my playlists?
Mmmhhh... doesn't sound too good, right?
    Xavier.

Go to Preferences in iTunes. Then go to advanced and importing. In importing change the import using to MP3 encoder.
Quit out of this menu. On the top tool bar you have Advanced and under here you have convert option. If you select the songs that you want to convert and use this convert option they will go to MP3s

  • Want to replace Wav Files with Apple Lossless in the same folder...Scripts?

    Hello!
I have about 4,000 wav files (wow) that I digitized from Vinyl. I organize my media folder myself (I have the organize option unchecked in preferences) and most of the songs are not properly tagged. I would love to convert the wav files to apple lossless and have Itunes save the file in the same folder from where it originated. I havent found a way to do this yet. Its weird to me that I can select a song in a playlist and hit "Show in Finder" and it knows exactly where it is yet when I convert files to apple lossless they end up in the "unknown artist-unknown album" folder. Anyone have any ideas or is there any scripts that can do this for me ? thanks so much!!
I had found one script that deletes the original wav files but still the new apple lossless are still put in the unknown album folder.....
    Zeke

When iTunes converts a file, it does not allow you to direct the location of the output file, but rather places it according to the Artist/Album tags, which in your case are unknown.
Almost every other conversion tool allows you to direct the location of the output. There are not a huge choice that run on the Mac and support Apple Lossless, but a good one is Max.

  • Ripping in Apple lossless, random beeps in file created. genius bar no help

Just began downloading my CDs to an external firewire drive attached to my new Macbook w/ Leopard, using iTunes w/ Apple Lossless. This will be for my hi-fi stereo. I'm using the latest versions of all software.
After about a dozen CDs, I have done some listening. At the end of some tracks there is an electronic beep that lasts about one second, starts in right channel and moves to left channel.
Only some tracks have this beeping, but consistently occurs at end of tracks, from CDs released last year, five years ago and even ten years ago.
Tested these same CDs on my Thinkpad w/ Windows XP and iTunes, using apple lossless. NO BEEPS at the end of the same tracks that had beeps on the Mac.
Any idea how to get rid of this?

I have a MBPro and have been experiencing dropouts and blips when ripping with Apple lossless. Having dropouts does rather defeat the purpose.
I was ripping to an external USB drive. Based on this, I'll try to my very fast internal 7200rpm drive. Anyone else but us two experiencing this, and have any workarounds or feedback? It's VERY frustrating...
