Using Apple Remote Desktop

I recently got a call from a relative in need of some tech-support (from me). Obviously, it's hard to do tech-support over the phone with someone who is not that great with computers. What exactly do I need to do in order to gain access and remote control their computer using Apple Remote Desktop?
Thanks,
Mason

*Absolutely excellent.*
My Leopard MacPro wouldn't sync calendar or address book stuff with my Nokia E50, like it did when it had Tiger on it. My G3 Tiger laptop does, but screen sharing wouldn't work between the two. I downloaded both those referred programs, and with just the osxvnc installed on the G3, screen sharing works perfectly. Now that dot mac sync is fixed, I sync my main stuff on the MacPro to the G3, and work the G3 through the MacPro with the osxvnc to bluetooth sync the phone.
Perfect fix, if just a tad cumbersome, thanks Bill.... ah, I mean Steve.
If I could just get rid of that Bonjour window it would be even better.
If only Nokia would get a plugin for Leopard, all that would be extra.
Anyway, *Thanks Andrew.* Your solution was golden for me.

You would have to launch software that would accept audio from the microphone and transmit it to you in some fashion. ARD does not transmit audio itself. Another remote control solution such as Timbuktu might transmit audio, so you could look into that, perhaps.
Also is there a way to use apple's software to control and watch a PC?
You can install a VNC server on the PC and ARD can then take control of the system. It can be tricky to find a VNC system that will work with ARD, though, so search this forum for "VNC" for possible options. One of the applications that support Microsoft's remote desktop architecture such as their own Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac or iTap Mobile RDP will probably work better, though.

  • Can I use Apple Remote desktop to connect over the internet?

I would like to use Apple Remote Desktop to connect back to my MacPro desktop at home while I am on my Macbook Air at work.  Will I need a static IP from my service provider to do it.

    Hi
It's not absolutely necessary but it would be more useful if you did have one. Most ISPs will require you to have a business class broadband service at your home rather than a residential one. These cost more (a lot more in some cases) than a residential service. Call your home location's ISP and discuss it with them.
If the cost is too much then you could go for a DynDNS account which is free. The details of this account would be configured in the whatever you're using as a firewall at your home's location. This assumes the firewall has the facility to add such an account. Thereafter it's just a question of configuring the port fowarding feature of that firewall.
A potentially 'big' problem though is whether or not your workplace will allow that kind of traffic out of their network. This would be something you'd need to discuss with them first.
    HTH?

  • Using Apple Remote Desktop to Deploy Filemaker Pro 10 /Create Filemaker pkg

I need to deploy Filemaker Pro 10 to a number of Macs in our office, all of them with Apple Remote Desktop installed.
I have the FileMaker Pro 10 installation file (it's listed as an .app) and the text file called "assisted install."
If I have these two files in the same folder, I can run them and it will allow myself (or the user) to install FileMaker with only a few "continue" clicks.
I am, however, trying to streamline the process by creating a package (.pkg) so that I can deploy the software using Apple Remote Desktop (I'm using version 3.2.2).
I am, however, a Package Maker novice, and am not sure if this is more pain than it's worth.
Is there anyone out there who has done or tried to do something similar to what I'm trying?
Is there another way using Apple Remote Desktop (besides controlling each individual pc to install the program) to deploy FileMaker Pro 10?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the suggestion. Since I don't want to spend money, I decided to go with InstallEase from LanREV.
As I was getting ready to write this off as done, one possible problem occured to me.
When FileMaker installs, it automatically puts in the username as whatever the current installing user is. You might not be able to answer this, but I'll ask anyway.
If I use InstallEase to take a snapshot of my system before install, then after, and use that package to deploy... is it going to show my name as the username on everyone's systems, or will it figure it out on its own?
I'm going to see if I can scrounge up a test mac to see if my theory proves correct or not, but in the meantime, feel free to answer if you already know what will happen.

  • Using Apple Remote Desktop with Audio Applications

Hello, I am configuring a setup consisting of a Mac Pro with Mac OS 10.4.9 running Logic Audio and a Mac G5 Quad with Mac Os 10.4.8 running Protools HD.
I am considering using a Gefen Systems KVM switcher, or Apple Remote Desktop.
Has anyone had any experience using Apple Remote Desktop to run Protools?
    Scott

if all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be overkill. Look into the freeware VNC. That will give you control capabilities and not cost you anything. You can find VNC applications for Mac here. Most people seem to find Chicken of the VNC works well for them.

  • How to set Updates with 11.3 when using Apple Remote Desktop for installation?

So for all pre-11.3 versions of Flash Player on OSX, I have just pulled out the "Adobe Flash Player.pkg" installer package from the installer .dmg and used Apple Remote Desktop to deploy Flash to the Macs I manage.
However, when doing that with Flash 11.3, this leaves the "Updates" setting in the Flash Player System Preference set to "Notify me to install updates".
I'd like to push something that would set this to "Allow Adobe to install updates".
Is there a way to modify the .pkg installer to have the System Preference set to that value (or push/copy some other .plist file to the clients to have that setting enabled?)
    Thanks!

I poked around a bit and the file seems to be:
    /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/mms.cfg
I'd like to get some confirmation from Adobe that this is the correct file to push, though (it seems like it as it only contains this):
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1

  • Updating Acrobat using Apple Remote Desktop

I'm pretty sure I already asked this yet I can't find the post so I need to ask again.
I need to update Adobe Acrobat 9 and Adobe Reader 9 remotely - without having to touch every Macintosh the software resides on.  I would like to create a cumulative package and install updates using Apple Remote Desktop.  I have looked at the Enterprise Deployment software and documentation, yet I don't use Adobe Creative Suite - I only use Adobe Acrobat 9 and Adobe Reader 9.
I have users with varying versions of Adobe Acrobat 9 and Adobe Reader 9, so downloading one version update won't work.  What I need is a cumulative updater containing updates from 9.0 through 9.4 for both products that can be deployed via Apple Remote Desktop.
Is this possible and if so, how?
    Thanks for any assistance.

We have the same problem. We can mass desploy CS5 with a package made with the Adobe Application Manager Enterprise Edition application. But Acrobat is not supported by AAMEE. Making my own package based on the information on http://www.osxdeployment.info/wiki/CS5_Repackaging_Guide doesn't work for us.
We have more than 300 Macs and it's impossible to do the installation manually.
Adobe should provide a standard pkg for Acrobat Professional 9.3 (part of CS5 DP & WP Suite).
FYI a trial of Acrobat X is nowhere to be found for Mac: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=acrobat_pro

  • HELP - Installing Photoshop CS3 Extended using Apple Remote Desktop

    Hello,
I have 12 MacPro's in a classroom. Is there a way to Install Photoshop CS3 Extended using Apple Remote Desktop (not on a server) to all the computers at once?
    Thank you very much.

I don't have access to stand-alone PS CS3, only the Design Premium CS3 disc, but that includes Photoshop, so they're probably the same system. In any case, it does not use a standard Apple packaging scheme, instead using a custom mess of hollow folders, app packages, disk images, shared resources, and xml config files.
I briefly went ahead with the idea of doing an install, looking for what had been installed, and bundling up that virgin copy using Package Maker; but installing it elsewhere — with Installer, nevermind ARD — failed or left me with a 'crashy' copy of the apps. Maybe I just stink at making packages of other people's software, but my guess is that Adobe's installer throws files into nooks and crannies all over, or does a importantly-different install depending on your hardware/software config. In any case, I gave up and made an updated hard drive image including the new software. Deploying that worked fine.
Sorry I didn't have better news. Good luck. Joel

  • H E L P ! ! Managing Parental Controls & Cloning using Apple Remote Desktop

    Hello folks,
I work in an UK University managing a Lab of Mac Pro's. We've just had a kit upgrade and I've spent the last few days installing and configuring the systems. There are two accounts on each machine; an 'administrator' and a 'student' (a managed account). All managed by Apple Remote Desktop.
Basically, after installing the OS 10.6 and other software, I've setup one machine as I would like it to be and want to clone 'Parental Controls' settings from one machine to the rest. Sounds simple. Hmmm. Well despite being able to see all the other machines on the network and connecting to them using the administrator login, the settings won't copy.
I have being using the 'Copy' & 'Paste Settings' in the Parental Controls Prefs Pane, ensuring that the "Manage parent controls from another computer" is ticked on the destination machine. The settings appear to copy, or when selected duplicate, so there appears to be two versions Photoshop, Illustrator etc etc.
I've follow the limited information I've found on the net, but am still experiencing problems. I've run Disk Utils, checked and repaired the Permissions, used Time Machine to copy the settings using Migrate Users Utility.
I'm not sure if these issues are connected to a problem I had with CS3 licensing where the volume licence "stopped" working. As the Adobe apps are the constantly stating, on the "student" account, that the user doesn't have permission to open them. Despite being ticked in the Parental Controls Panel. I've cured this on one machine, the one I want to clone the Parental Prefs of.
Well … after that monologue - can anyone suggest a way of cloning these prefs (wherever they live) rather than having to format and use Time Machine to clone the entire OS and Mac?
I'd love a Unix command which I could send from ARD - but I'm a still a little green to it's use.
All comments, solutions and help gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

    Hi
+"Is there any way to permanently install parental controls in on a mac mini with Snow leopard server software on it?"+
I don't think so? Besides there's no need for it. Parental Controls is available as a Managed Preference (or MCX) using WorkGroup Manager either at Users, Group or Hardware Level. Launch the application and click on the Preferences icon and you'll see what I mean.

  • Shutdown a remote iMac using Apple Remote Desktop and Automator action

    Hi,
I have my iMac and my wife's iMac connected to the same UPS. There is only one USB connector for the UPS that notifies my iMac when its time to shutdown due to a power cut out.
Is there a way for my iMac to then send a command to my wife's iMac (which may be asleep; the iMac not my wife!) and instruct it to shutdown (forcefully)?
The Belkin UPS software enables me to launch an automator action before it shuts down my computer.
    Your help would be appreciated,
    Tony

Unless you already have Apple Remote Desktop, it will almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a second UPS for your wife's iMac than it will be to purchase ARD.
If you do have ARD 3 already, then it looks like it would be possible to create an Automator workflow that would select your wife's iMac and then send the Unix command "shutdown" (look at the man page for shutdown for the usage). I haven't tried doing this, though, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like it would work.

  • Need help using Apple Remote Desktop for remote family members

I am new to ARD and need help. I know there are solutions to do what I am trying to do through LogMeIn and Teamviewer - but I have LogMein right now and the free edtition is going away and I think Teamviewer will do the same sooner or later. I have remote desktop but hadnt used it, so I thought it would be a good thing to implement so I wont have to worry about paying fees for services like LogMein or teamviewer down the road.  Long story short I need to be able to remote help friends and family members with their macs and using applications, mostly through screen sharing and control and file sharing. All of the folks id like to help have home ( not business style ) internet service whith DHCP and non-static IP's.  I have set this up for myselft to test it and I can be at work and search my homes IP address and I can see all the macs with ARD on them and it all works perfectly.  I have a mac mini running Lion Server so the ports are forwarded to that server at my home - this is the only think I can think of that is making my home work and my friends not.  But when I try to help my friends and family after I type in their IP and it scans it sees their computer - ( it shows a grayed out icon and their IP ) but nothing else.  I cannot control or screen share. It says it cannot verify.  I helped my friends put the ARD client ( most up to date client ) on their macs as well.  I was hoping that using ARD would mean not haivng to set up my friends and family's routers for port fowarding and all those details.  Is there anything I can do using ARD to be able to type in my friends IP address have it scan and then see all their MACS at their home and pick the one that needs attention/ help, without port forwarding or heavy set up ?  I guess the root question here is how or what is best way to set up ARD to be used to help people remotley when they are all home users as well, no port forwarding, no static-IP, that kinda thing.
Any help is appreciated - Im trying to use ARD and not a 3rd party app since im afraid even if they are free now they wont stay that way. Please let me know throughts and sugesstions ;p)

  • How do I connect into my mac using Apple Remote Desktop

I have version 2 of this but am not that network-savvy. How can I connect to my G5 at work, from home, and vice versa?

If a user is an administrator on the computer they can do almost any thing they want.
You could install Apple Server Admin Tools onto your computer. One of the applications included in the tool set is Workgroup Manager. Work group manager can be used to create/modify MCX. Ether on the local computer or remotely on an MCX compatbale directory server. (such as open directoy) MCX can be used to force a specific setting for many plist controled features.
You can use it to force a setting like time till screen saver starts. Require password when waking from sleep/screen saver. Force login window isntead of auot-login on reboot/startup.
The nice thing about using a server, such as an open directory, is that it's very easy to push out MCX policy updates. Of corse you would have to update your computers to the directory server.
If you don't have a directory server, and don't want a directory server. Then you can use work group manager to modifies the local policy of a comptuer. you can then use a unix commands to extract the actually MCX settings. You could then use ARD Send Unix command to apply the MCX settings to one or more remote computer.
ether way, an admin on the computer could still remove the MCX. But the user would have to figure out where setting is coming from. and then figure out how to remove the setting.

I know how to do this locally, but a) can I do it with ARD, and b) can I keep the end users (who may have administrator rights to their computers) from changing it.  I need to implement this policy to lock every computer after 15 minutes of idle time.

  • I can't use Apple Remote desktop to connect to a Lion 10.7 mac form  SL 10.6 Mac.

I already upgraded ARD to 3.5.1 on the 10.6 machine. What is causing this. the 10.7 Mac was recently upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7.1 using the Lion USB Key.
any Ideas out there? Everytime I try to connect to the lion mac form SL it gets a connection failed error in ARD?

Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • How to disable Airport Status using Apple Remote Desktop?

I am in a school and students have began using the "Create Network" item in the Airport Status menu to send inappropriate messages to each other. I can uncheck the "Show Airport Status in menubar" which will eliminate this but I'd rather not have to go around to 200 computers. Is there a Unix command that I can send in ARD that will disable this menu from even showing up? Thanks.

I see that you are also using AD and OD together. You can use OD to push out a computer MCX preference, that will disable the student's ability to do just what you want.
Select the computer list, click preferences at the top, choose Network, Sharing & Interfaces, set it to Always and check Disable Internet Sharing.
    It works well.
I know this is not what you asked for, but hopefully it solves your problem.
