Using Apple TV 2010 to stream music to exernal speakers?

I just purchased an Apple TV and connect it to my local wireless network.
However i cannot find the settings to use my external speakers (2 Airport Express Stations, one in the kitchen, one in the bedroom) to stream music or any other content from the Apple TV to the external speakers. I found lots of articles how to do it the other way around by using the Apple TV as external speakers which is working fine.
I can select the Apple TV through my iTunes, and that as well works fine, but where can i select my external speakers to be used with the Apple TV?

Annoying isn't it.
AppleTV 1 had this feature but it is not available on AppleTV2 which can only behave as an Airtunes speaker. A number of times I went to use it in this way and couldn't, but can with my AppleTV 1.
It may be an oversight, or an assumption along the lines of 'if streaming from iTunes, why not just use the Airport as the speaker from iTunes and not play on ApppleTV?' - on the face of it this is logical until you consider situations where you want to browse play on the TV with a computer in a completely different area.
We don't all want to use Airplay either, and some may not have the portable devices to do so.
If however you have an iPhone or iPad and computer is remote from the speakers, the best workaround would be to use Remote app on the device to control iTunes and the output speaker.

  • Using apple express to wirelessly stream music other than from iTunes

Not sure if this is a no brainer, but let's say I want to listen to Sirius radio online, but want to stream it to my airport express hooked up to speakers in my bedroom. I don't know how. The only way I can stream music to my airport express is if i'm listening to something in iTunes. Can anybody help me?

    HI HV:
There is a 3rd party application for the mac that will let you stream music from other applications (Called Airfoil) which can be found at: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/
There is no Windows application that I'm aware of.
    I hope this helps!

Welcome to the Apple Community Sam.
If they have an optical input and a volume control, then there shouldn't be any reason why not.

  • Can itunes stream music to separate speakers in one room and apple TV?

I was thinking about getting an apple TV and one question I have is whether it's possible to stream music from my imac to speakers/airport in the living room as well as to apple TV/tv speakers in another room? A second question to this, can this all still be controlled by the iphone remote app?

Oh, if you don't want to use Airfoil, iTunes itself allows you to stream to multiple speakers, look at the left side of the bottom of the iTunes window you will see the control for the speakers, it probably says "computer" on your system, if you clik on it it should show any connected "airtunes" speakers and appleTV if yo have one.

  • HT4437 Using airplay, I want to stream music from my Mac to my ipad in a different room

Like the question, I've connected my ipad to my Mac & my Apple TV but I would like to listen to music from my Mac in a different room and have the sound come from the iPad, I can control itunes and Apple TV from my ipad what is useful if I'm in the same room but what I really want is to know how to control the sound to come from the iPad, I can listen to stuff from cloud but the internet has a nasty habit of cutting out so airplay would be cooler.. Does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, thanks for letting me know
Though I find it a bit misleading to say you can stream what you want to any device around the house.. Why would I want to sit in another room playing music in another, I can't exactly carry my mac around the house.
If you don't want to store loads of music or films on your phone or ipad that couldn't store all what I've got on my mac I'd say that would be the most useful feature, so you can play it on another device.
I live and work in a bar and sometimes DJ or just like to just pump music round the bar without messing about taking stuff on and off my ipad.
There just seems to be a lot of needless limitations, like you can't even get all the content you would watch ether... When you can get everything on a laptop and plug it into a TV and watch what you want and have a 500 to 1tb hard drive on it.
I really like the idea's their coming up with but their not quite there yet.
I often wonder why they just don't do a Full HD TV with a mac inside it and doubles up as a stereo and you can just stream everything from it.
    Maybe in the future.
    Cheers

I have apple id credit and I want to get itunes music match. I do not want to have to pay for it when I have the credit on my account already.

  • Apple TV, how to stream music directly from iPad or iPhone

I have an iPad 1 and an iPhone4. I have just bought an Apple TV and successfully connected it to the network. I can play from my iTunes library on my computer, but can you play directly from an iPad or iPhone without running iTunes thru a laptop? I turned on Home Sharing on all my devices, but when I'm in iTunes on my laptop I can't see the iPad or iPhone anywhere.

You need to use AirPlay to play contents on your iPad or iPhone, go into your setup on Apple TV and make sure Airplay is on, then go to your iOS device and play a move or song and then click on the triangle in the box in the right corner and select AirPlay is should start playing on your TV via Apple TV.

  • Can I stream music from Apple TV to airport express?

Using Apple TV can I stream music for say apple radio to my apple airport express which is in another room and connected to a set of speakers?

Yes.  It is in Settings, but I cannot tell you where at this moment.  Just click around in Settings, and you will see an Airplay drop down like on your Mac.
    Have a nice day.

  • How can i stream music (itunes, soundcloud, rio) from my macbook wirelessly to my stereo?

    how can i do this?

You can do this a couple of ways. The easiest and cheapest way is to purchase an AirPort Express and connect it to your sound system. This will make it a "wirelessly enabled device" and you can use AirPlay in iTunes to stream music to your speakers. Another option is Apple TV but that will do a great many things more like video streaming to a TV.

  • Apple TV will stream music but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  During the unsuccessful connection process, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.

Apple TV 3 will stream music via Home Sharing from iTunes on Mac running 10.6.8 but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  When trying to connect, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.  ATV will stream movies purchased through the ATV but not those purchased through or ripped/copied onto the Mac.  I've tried fixes suggested for similar problems (rebooting ATV and Mac, signing out then back into iTunes Store) to no success.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is the most bogus example of Apple rip-off EVER.  They do not advertise this *feature* and yet expect people to invest in an Apple ECOSYSTEM?  My experience with Apple TV using a central media "server" (a dedicated Mac Mini) has been atrocious.  I continually get "Cannot connect..." messages and with typical Apple "it just works" mentality, there is no reason stated.  I HATE APPLE TV and I HATE APPLE.  Peddle your crapple somewhere else.

  • Using Apple TV 2 to replace Sonos- speaker recommendations?

I purchased a Sonos Play:3 last week, but am considering returning it because, although it sounds nice, the integration with iTunes is weaker than I thought:
    1) To play music from iTunes, you either have to have a computer on with iTunes running or a NAS installed
    2) Your iTunes collection has to be re-indexed after changes are made
    3) Sonos doesn't support either iCloud or AirPlay, and according to support staff there are no plans to
    4) It's a closed, proprietary system- you need to buy a more expensive Sonos Play:5 just to have an analog line input available.
Enter the Apple TV 2...I'm thinking of returning the Sonos and instead using the Apple TV 2 to stream music from iCloud. I'll control it from my iPhone or iPad with the free Apple remote app. Since I don't want to have the TV on when playing music, I can't use the Apple TV's HDMI connection for audio, so I need to use the Toslink output. If I want to add more remote speakers later, I'll rely on AirPlay, and use iTunes either on the PC, iPhone or iPad.
(Note to Apple: please update the Apple TV 2 so it can be an AirPlay source, and please make it so all AirPlay sources, including the iPhone and iPad, can be sent to multiple destinations at once with individual volume control, not just when the source is iTunes on a computer!)
Since I don't have a receiver or existing speakers, I'm looking to replace the Sonos Play:3 with a decent powered speaker system meeting these requirements:
    - Must be: under about $350, or 275 euros, although I might stretch a little
    - Must be: white in color (my girlfriend's requirement)
    - Nice to have: Toslink input (without Toslink, it must have an aux line in and I'll get http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302 &p_id=2948&seq=1&format=2)
    - Nice to have: AirPlay support
    - Nice to have: available from the EU / Czech Republic, although I can get something shipped
The Libratone speakers look nice, but they're too expensive: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H6599VC/A/libratone-live-airplay-speaker. Bose products aren't available here in Czech, and anyway I returned my last Bose computer speakers after not being very pleased with price / performance.
Does anyone have any speakers meeting the above requirements, and is happy with them, or at least have a suggestion?

Is it possible to use my Sonos Play:3 speakers with my Apple TV?  I have a pair of speaker connected thru a Sonos Bridge to my home wifi network. The Sonos are great and now (with Sonos Desktop 3.5.2) work very well with my iTunes library, but I'd like to get the benefit of the Sonos sound quality while watching TV or a Movie thru my Apple TV.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    No - Not Directly.
AppleTV has only Digital Out - no Analog Out.
Sonos users who have an AppleTV will port their analog audio from their TV set into the analog line-in inputs of a ZonePlayer.  The Play:3 does not have any audio inputs of any type.  You may be out of luck if that's all you have in your Sonos system
You'll need a Play:5, ZP90, or ZP120 to do this.  Once within the Sonos wireless-mesh environment, any other ZonePlayer will be able to play the TV's audio.
Be aware, that you may have a 70ms delay that can throw off the TV's lip sync (or make it better as the case may be).
You can learn more on integrating you AppleTV if you search the Sonos user Forums directly.  See: http://forums.sonos.com/index.php
I have a six-zone Sonos system along with AppleTV.  I choose not to connect the two.  My TV has a decent audio bar hooked into it, and I keep my Sonos audio separately from the TV.
    YMMV
    Best of Luck

  • Airport Express cuts off streaming music

I have an Airport Express 802.11n (2nd Generation)  Version 7.6.2 Firmware
I have configured my network to use my airport express to stream music from iTunes.  My music stops sporatically when streaming.  It eventually starts back up, then it stops again sometimes for as long as a minute.  FRUSTRATING.
The musis still plays on my computer, it's just something with the music stream.  Has anyone else encountered this?
The Airport express is configured to "Join Wireless Network" and the security is "WPA2 Personal"
I'm connecting to a Cisco Systems WAP AP610N with a wireless band of 2.4GHz and a Channel Width of 20 MHz
Standard Channel is:  6 which is 2.437GHz
    Any suggestions on why?

FYI, my final resolution was to sell it and buy another one.
