Using Apple TV with an external HD

Hello!
I have used an apple TV and external HD for movies (all legally purchased) with a PC for years. I recently updated my computer and purchased a MacBook Pro. When using the PC, I could go to itunes-then movies-and alll the titles of my movies would appear and I could choose. I currently am having difficulty with the fact that when I plug in the HD it appears on the desktop, but the titles will not appear in itunes movies. I have sharing and airplay activated. I dont want to transfer the movies to my Mac, I want to store the movies on my HD and choose them from Itunes. ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Brad

Welcome to the Apple Community.
It sounds as though you are just plugging the drive into the Mac, you need to put the content into iTunes, you can keep it on the drive but it must be part of your iTunes library.

you must have to have a keyboard or mouse to trigger the macbook wake up from sleep when you close the lid.
usb mouse is not that expensive and you can start with that.

If you forgot your encryption password:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC. Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:

But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine. I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake a back-up. I have now switched of all screen savers.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

No, Apple TV connects directly to your TV. It's as simple as connecting via HDMI and then following the on scren instructions. It will find your networks but you will need to enter your password when setting it up.

Are you trying to restore a backup, or just sync some apps? Do you have profiles installed on the device?
Have you plugged the ipad into iTunes, and did a fresh install? I'm assuming the device went through the prepare setup properly. You many have to unsupervise it first, then plug it into iTunes to wipe it completely.
I'd then do each step seperately. Prepare it, then install 1 app, if that works, try another app, then maybe a profile.

To add to the above. The device was designed to work with HDMI and there will be no guarantee with any adapter. Even if it were to work, you will have issues with resolution, aspect ratio, and be unable to play protected content (i.e. iTunes, Netflix). You would also need to purchase a DAC in order to have audio. Functionality could also cease at any time.

Then you should be fine, mirroring has nothing to do with an Apple ID. As long as the Apple TV and iPad (2nd gen or later) are on the same network you can use the feature

but if it don't have speakers you have to connect some amp which have optical input to get sound
and monitors with only subD or other analog sources or dvi which dont support hdcp would not work
