Using Apple TV With Time Capsule

Will the latest Apple TV work with Time Capsule without a computer running? I don't want to have to switch on my Mac Mini every time to use the Apple TV. If not, please could someone tell me what you can and can't do with the mac mini on or off.
Many thanks

AppleTV will work witghout a computer if you just want the internet features like movie/TV show rentals, YouTube, Netflix etc if available in your country.
To stream content from your local itunes library, even if that content is stored on a TC, iTunes must be running.

Is it possible to sync Apple TV with Time Capsule ?
I'm not entirely sure what you are asking here. You can use the TC for your itunes media instead of locally on your PC, you will still need to run itunes on your PC though to sync any of the content to the apple tv.

    I don't see why not.
Is it possible to back up my iTuens library on my Time Capsule ?
Yes, but if you intend keeping the original content on the TC (as per Q1), I'm not so sure it would be a good idea, most people seem to lose content through drive failures rather than deleting by mistake, a drive failure would wipe out the original media and the back up at the same time.

  • Can i use existing airport with Time Capsule

i have already bought an airport, but can i use it with Time Capsule  OR do I need to buy the $299 Time Capsule wireless hard drive?

If you are telling us that you have already bought an AirPort Extreme, and that you want to connect a USB hard drive to the AirPort and use that for Time Machine backups, this is not officially supported by Apple.
Some users seem to be able to make this work, while others.....like me....who try this have nothing but problems.
To be officially supported, you need to connect a hard drive directly to your Mac for Time Machine backups or use a Time Capsule.

  • Using my Apple Tv with Time Capsule

I would know if it is possible to store movies and photos on Time Capsule, not in a folder in the back up folder, and displays them to the Apple TV, use it as an external HD. How can I do this?

You would need to treat the Time Capsule as a network drive location storing iTunes media - the compuer running iTunes would need to be on with iTunes running.
No way currently to get AppleTv to see TC without iTunes acting as intermediary.

  • Using Linksys router with Time Capsule / Airtunes...

    Hi,
Does anyone have any idea how I can use my old Linksys WRT54G wireless router with my Time Capsule in such a way that the WRT54G provides a b/g network and I can have my Time Capsule provide just 802.11n for the best possible speed?
I have the two connected via Ethernet (TC connected directly to my cable modem) but don't seem to be able to get things to work.
I know I must be on the edge of getting this to work but am obviously missing the final step...
Cheers in advance for any help you can give,
    Adi :o)

  • How do I use my iPad with time capsule

I would like to download and upload from my iPad to my new timecapsule?
However, I can only access the wireless and settings by using the airport utility...
    Please help

You might want to take a look at an App like FileBrowser for the iPad to do what you want with the Time Capsule.
App Store - FileBrowser - Access files on remote computers

  • Slow Performance when using USB HD with Time Capsule

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule that I primarily use for network storage for 4 computers (3 Windows and a MacBook Pro). There is about 250 GB of data on the TC. After doing my research, I hooked up a 2 TB WD My Book to the TC USB port (after first reformatting the My Book using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). TC recognized the NAS HD just fine, but when I tried moving files from the TC to the My Book, it took FOREVER. 66 hrs to copy all 250 GB; 46 hours to move 60GB). I tried connecting the My Book directly to my MB Pro via USB and files moved quickly (15 minutes for 10GB). With the My Book connected to the MB Pro, I can access TC over Wifi and copy files directly onto the My Book in little time (again about 15 min for 10 GB). Any idea why the USB transfer rate between TC and the NAS is so slow? I have the most current TC firmware.

That thread is 5 years old
???? It's from three days ago. The electronic book it references was updated last year.
Plus that was talking about a 2002 Airport Extreme base station, whereas I have a 2009 Time Capsule.
As I mentioned above, the source I quoted is from last year. The thread I cited mentions nothing about
a particular year of base station. Where do you see that stuff?
As for my wifi connection, it seems very fast in all respects. As I mentioned, when I connect the external HD to my MacBook Pro and transfer files over my wifi from the Time Capsule, it boogies along. At any rate, I am not sure why the wifi would have an affect on the transfer rate of 2 disks connected by a USB cable.
My point was that, if that data has to travel over your Wi-Fi connection, the quality of that connection could affect the transfer speed you see. To investigate that possibility, I'd connect your Mac to the AirPort base station via Ethernet, turn your Mac's AirPort circuitry off, and repeat your tests that way.

  • So you CAN or CANNOT use external drive with Time Capsule...

I was posting earlier and was told you CAN'T plug an external HDD into a Time Capsule and have it be recognized (some said you had to plug it into a USB hug first.)
    Then I find this  - http://www.brighthub.com/computing/mac-platform/articles/48709.aspx
Then before posting this I find others that say you CAN.  So what's the deal?  Can I or can I not plug in a USB  external HDD and have access to it?

The link that you posted is a bit out of date, but the information in the article is correct.
You can connect an external USB drive to a Time Capsule (or AirPort Extreme) if the following conditions are met:
The drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Most store bought drives are pre-formatted for Windows in a format called NTFS which will not work the Time Capsule. You have to use Disk Utility on your Mac to re-format the drive to work correctly with the Time Capsule.
Use a powered USB hub as the USB port on the Time Capsule is a bit under powered and it will not supply enough current for some drives. As a general rule....use a powered USB hub....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
At times, I have had 3 drives from differerent manufactures all hooked up simultaneously into a powered USB hub which in turns connects to the USB port on the Time Capsule. No problems at all.
There are never any guarantees, but if you follow the guidelines, chances are good that your drive will work just fine.

  • Apple tv with time capsule?

    Hi Communities.
I have recently puchased Apple tv, and I am considering buyin a time capsule. So my question is, can I stream music, videos and so on from itunes via time capsule without turning on any macs?
    Hope somebody knows this.
    /Mads Emil

No, an instance of iTunes must be running so you would need the Mac. The only other way is through an IOS device using airplay.

i want to do the same. i tried entering my @me.com account and does not work, but if I tried to go to icloud.com and using my @me.com works

  • Using disk utility with Time Capsule backup disk

When backing up, i get an error msg that tells me to run disk utility on my backup drive. It says it's having problems coping files. In Disk Utiltiy, I don't see a way to choose the time capsule backup drive but only the hard drive on my laptop. Help pls.

The error message is fundamentally stupid. You cannot use disk utility on a network drive.
You can however fix or test the sparsebundle which is the virtual disk file TM creates on the TC.

  • Using Airport Express with Time Capsule

Simple question. We use Time Capsule primarily for WIFI. I have an express and want to use it only for playing my itunes music through our stereo. My Time Capsule works beautifully, but the express flashes amber when I connect it to a power source and our stereo. How do I get the two to work together simply. I don't care about extending our network or anything fancy. I just want to listen to good music.

You'll need to "hard reset" the AirPort Express by holding in the reset button until you see the amber light start to blink more quickly. Release the reset button when you see this occur.
Temporarily, position the AirPort Express near the Time Capsule and connect an ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express. Then open AirPort Utility and click Configure to follow the guided setup process. When asked how you want to configure the Express, you will choose the "Join a wireless network" option.
After you have completed the setup and updated the Express to save your new settings, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the AirPort Express to the desired location.

  • Do I need Apple TV with Time Capsule to stream to my tv?

Hi, I bought the TC today and am currently waiting for it to finish backing up my files. I've got a Samsung Series 6 tv and would like to stream from my iMac to the tv, which are on two different floors of the house. Do I need Apple TV to do this? I also have a Nintendo Wii and an Xbox 360. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Since you noted that you were using an iPad, are you looking for printing capability from the iPad?
If yes, you need an AirPrint compatible printer to be able to print directly from the iPad. An AirPort Express is not needed for this. Check this Apple support document for more details:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
Connecting a printer that is a non-compatible AirPrint model to the AirPort Express will not make it AirPrint compatible.
So, before we get too much further here, it might be a good idea to understand exactly what your goals are and what devices you want to use.

  • Anyone Use Different Backup Software with Time Capsule

I love the concept of Time Machine + Time Capsule, but there are too many problems and I have wasted too many hours trying to get it to work properly. So...
Has anyone had success using different backup software (maybe Apple Backup) with Time Capsule?
I would love to go back in time and simply:
1-Plug my computer into the drive (wireless is fine too)
    2-Launch my backup software
    3-Backup

Really not sure. I've always just done bootable backups...
You CAN create a bootable backup onto a sparse disk image on an Airdisk, but of course it wouldn't really be bootable until the backup was cloned back directly to a drive. So I guess you could back up that way, and if you needed it you could restore back to your main HDD, from the sparse image, and the computer would be restored and bootable. I think.
My original goal was to have both Time Machine backups and SuperDuper clones ll being done over the Time capsule/Airdisks, but now (if I decide to get an AEBS or TC) I will likely only do the Time Machine backups over the wifi, and still have an occasional clone made to a drive plugged in via usb.
To your last comment though...if your only going to do the User folder, it may make as much sense to just use Time Machine, since you can restore/migrate from a TM backup. Although it may be smart to do a user folder backup using BOTH Time Machine and SuperDuper, for redundancy.
Sigh, always so many options, and usually doesn't work the way you want it to...

  • Can I use apple TV on home network with time capsule or Airport Xtreme without being connected to the internet?

I'm wondering if I can use Apple TV to play movies and slide shows on my TV, play music over my sound system and print from my devices (Iphone 4S, iPad and MacBook pro 2011) by using an Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule (to back up the devices) if those devices are not connected to the internet. Can anyone advise pls? Reason for this is that I work on a moving ship and don't have an internet connection to speak of for much of the time (and if I do it's a wireless system that I need to pay by the minute and that is too slow to support the Apple TV), but would all the same like to create a wireless environment where my devices can interact with each other. I seem to get conficting info and a rep at the apple store in Honolulu told me that you cannot use Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule without an internet connection (it was busy, he may have misunderstood my question).
    Looking forward to your input.

Don't try to home share it.. as that is dependent on using Apple ID.
Just airplay to the ATV.. iTunes: Using AirPlay
The movie should play exactly as your doing music.. but get rid of the whole home share if that is causing issues.. there is no mention of needing home share in the above..
If you still have issues you might need to do it other ways.. like export the movie from itunes.. and play it using vlc which should allow you to stream it to the apple TV using airplay.
That is a bit tricky and I have not used that setup but it should work.
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/23412/can-i-stream-any-video-played-wit h-vlc-player-to-apple-tv
If you have a hunt around you should find it fairly easy to do.. but straight airplay should work.. there is a very recent update to ATV which might help it with airplay.
