Using AppleTV 2 with a VPN

Hey,
I have seen lots of discussion on whether you can setup a VPN on an AppleTV 2. The short answer in my experience is no.  However you can setup a VPN on an attached MacMini for example and then share its internet connection with the AppleTV.  I did this by purchasing an Apple Ethernet/USB adapter and used that to create a second physical Ethernet port.  I then purchased a VPN service and configured it using the built in client found in the networks panel of Systems Prefs of the MacMini.  Once that is working you simply go into the sharing panel and turn on internet sharing and share the VPN with the USB Ethernet port. Note you need to make sure that in the VPN configuration step that you click the "Send all Traffic Over the VPN Connection" option on the "advanced tab".
You can also avoid the extra cost of the Ethernet/USB adapter and setup the VPN over Airport Wireless and then share the VPN with the single Macmini Ethernet port into which you plug the AppleTV.  I didn't do this because I also use the Mac Mini to provide access to my RAID over my GigE network and I needed the port.  The Apple Ethernet Adapter is not GigE Capable...but neither is the AppleTV...so no loss.
If all you want to do access selected sites like Netflix, then Overplay.net has an interesting feature called SmartDNS which allows access to a number of selected sites by simply setting the Apple TV DNS server address to their magic address.  This doesn't create a VPN per se but it will give the same effect for the limited sites listed.  I configured the Networks Settings of AppleTV 2 in Manual mode where I simply changed just the DNS server address to the one they provided.  I found this gave better performance presumably because I was not stressing the MacMini with the VPN overhead.
Note these solution are mutually exclusive...the VPN solution covers all the bases while the SmartDNS does just a few key sites.  You would not use both together at the same time.
Anyway.....I spent alot of time trying to get this working and I hope it helps somone.

  • SAPGUI Disconnects with Vista VPN

    Dear experts,
I have the following problem, I'm using the saplogon 710 and build 1016365.
I'm connecting our server using Windows XP with Windows VPN every thing is fine and it rarely (if ever) disconnects.
However if I use Windows Vista with the same setup. After approximately 30 seconds of inactivity I get the following error.

Does anyone know how to use a PC with an AppleTV and can this be done and if so, how?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
How far have you got into the set up process please.

  • Can I use AppleTV with a monitor only?

I no longer have cable TV access (not enough value for its cost).
Can I use AppleTV with just a wide screen monitor?

Personally I'd go for a TV rather than a monitor as the monitor resolutions will not necessarily tie in with the expected AppleTv output resolutions 480p/576p/720p/1080i or 1080p. An HD ready TV with a lower than fullHD panel is still likely to work better than a monitor not suite designed for 16:9 signals, though the boundaries are becoming blurred.
Take a look at the AppleTV specs as content playback is more limited for video than you might realise without files in the appropriate format, and a MacMini might be worth considering with Front Row.

  • I do not see where to enter IP addresses in the Open VPN setup. Also, how can I set it up so that I can choose different servers in the same way as I can currently choose them with my VPN app but for PPTP?

I think I have it working on my iPhone 5. But, I do not see how I can control the exit point that I would like for the VPN. Are all the exit points shown in the VPN setting now going to work with Open VPN, or do they remain PPTP? If I am reading correctly, they look like they remain PPTP. If I cannot control the exit point for open VPN, which exit point is the default in the profile you provided me?I note that Open VPN Connect does not work with any of the new 64 bit devices like the iPhone 5S, the iPad Air, and the new iPad MIni. Is there any chance that you guys will come up with an update for your app so that open VPN can be made to work on all iOS devices? That would be nice, particularly if the Open VPN Connect app does not give me a choice of exit points. Thanks,

Just a quick note to tell you that Open VPN has updated their app so that it is compatible with 64 bit ARM devices like the iPhone 5S, the iPad Air, and the iPad Mini Retina. That does not resolve the problem of how to easily choose among the various possibilities for the exit server. We need to find an easy way to choose.

Thank you for trying the new Firefox. I'm sorry that you’re unhappy with the new design.
I understand your frustration and surprise at the removal of these features but I can't undo these changes. I'm just a support volunteer and I do not work for Mozilla. But you can send any feedback about these changes to http://input.mozilla.org/feedback. Firefox developers collect data submitted through there then present it at the weekly Firefox meeting
I recommend you try to adjust to 29 and see if you can't make it work for you before you downgrade to a less secure and soon outdated version of Firefox.
Here are a few suggestions for restoring the old design. I hope you’ll find one that works for you:

  • Problem using iPad mirroring with an Apple TV and 4:3 Projector

I'm a teacher and I've been using my iPad 2 in the classroom for about a year and a half. I would use Apple's VGA Adapter to connect to my projector, which worked fine. I just didn't like being tied down, and the dock connector would come loose very easily and lose connection to the projector, which interrupted the flow of the lesson.
So this summer, I got an Apple TV and a projector with an HDMI port so I could start using Airplay Mirroring to get the iPad screen onto the projector. But I'm having trouble with the aspect ratio. Forgive my drawing, but the genius at the Apple store had a hard time understanding my explanation, so I'm hoping this will help show what I mean.
My projector (ViewSonic DLP PJD5133) can be set to either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio (4:3, 800x600 is the native resolution). My projector screen in the front of the classroom is 4:3, so when the projector is set to 4:3, the image fills up the screen (which is what I want - it needs to be as big as possible so the entire class can see it clearly; plus it means all the output pixels are being used). When the projector is set to 16:9, the image is letterboxed (not ideal unless I'm showing a widescreen video or image).
The Apple TV's native aspect ratio is widescreen, and the iPad's native aspect ratio is 4:3, so if you use Airplay mirroring on a widescreen TV, the Apple TV will pillarbox the image (add horizontal black bars on each side), so that the image will not be stretched/distorted. (I know that it will show widescreen videos and a few widescreen-ready apps without the pillarbox, but the apps I use in class - Keynote, Noteshelf, etc. - don't fall in that category). The effect on my projector screen is a tiny 4:3 image taking up half the area it would have taken if I had used the VGA connection.
So in the Apple TV, I went to Settings>Audio & Video>TV resolution, and chose 800x600 60Hz (the max 4:3 resolution for my projector). Since the Apple TV is natively widescreen, it seems to accomplish this change be stretching the image vertically; but it basically works because the Apple TV home screen fills up the projector screen. However, when I turn on Airplay Mirroring on my iPad, the image does not fill up the screen. The Apple TV still puts a pillarbox on the image, so I end up with a distorted, square image of my iPad screen. It's the right height - the max 600 pixels for my projector - but it's not as wide as it should/could be.
Is there a setting that I'm missing? I understand that the Apple TV has to stretch its home screen image to accommodate the 4:3 resolution, but I think it should be smart enough to realize that if it's receiving a 4:3 image from the iPad and sending it out to a 4:3 TV, it doesn't need to pillarbox the image.
Before you answer - this is not a problem with the projector settings, and my Apple TV is not defective. You could simulate what's happening on your Apple TV, even if it's hooked up to a widescreen TV. In the Apple TV settings, change the TV Resolution to 800x600 as mentioned above (or any other of the 4:3 options). Now go to the Apple TV home screen, and note the amount of space the image is taking up on your screen (on a widescreen TV, it will be pillarboxed, and it will look like it's been squished horizontally). Then turn on Airplay mirroring on the iPad, and you'll see that the iPad image does not have the same width as the Apple TV home screen and it looks square/squished.
Also, while my projector does have a zoom function, it will not magnify the small iPad mirror image correctly (if I were to leave the Apple TV and projector on a 16:9 setting). It cuts off the top and sides. But even if it didn't crop the image, it's a digital zoom, so that option still won't fix the fact that I'm not getting a full 800x600 image on the projector. The same problem would apply if I were to move the projector farther away from the screen (so that the widescreen image takes up the full height of the projector screen, while spilling off the sides). I'll still have a lower resolution image, which isn't ideal since I'm often showing text on the screen through Keynote. Also, widescreen videos wouldn't fit on the screen, and I can't move the projector easily because it's fixed to the ceiling.
Sorry for the long explanation. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate some insight.

We have the same problem, and not only with ipads. Macbook Air is doing something similar. it can only use airplay with 1080 and 720 resolution, so the image is squeezed on a 4:3 projector. We use AppleTV 3 and Mountain Lion OS. We use ATVPRO from Kanex.
Apple must get its act together and fix this, they promise gold and green forests, but nothing works.
    DO SOMETHING!

My iphone 5s consumed  10GB data this what's wrong with my VPN kindly guide suitably moreover battery drain fast

The long backups seem to be related to the size of the apps you installed, not the number. That's why some people with multiple pages of apps experience fast backups. There does seem to be a bug with the current firmware that can cause a crash when doing app uploads and syncs. This bug seems to be exacerbated by having large and many apps.
I was experiencing frequent crashes, but have no more - even with 70 apps installed - some of them large like the American Heritage Dictionary which is several hundred megabytes. I did the following:
    1. I set iTunes to NOT do autosyncs every time I plug in. This setting is in the Itunes preferences.
    2. I disabled the autobackups in iTunes for the iphone. I figured that if it did crash and it was going to take 2 hours to restore, why not just reload. The instructions are readily found using google search; it involves a command line setting. Anyway, the phone doesn't crash anymore since doing this.
    3. I no longer install apps using the iPhone. I first install the app in iTunes and the I manually sync it to the iphone. I avoid doing multiple installs at once; at least for the large apps. Right click on each app and get its info from within itunes. If it is large, it is going to take time to backup.
    4. I always first shut off the iphone and restart it before installing any apps in itunes. This clears any memory issues left behind from use.
I am going to continue to do these procedures until Apple releases a fix for the bugs relating to the apps.
As noted, since I took these steps, I have had no crashes. I was crashing at least once every 1-2 days before with the same or less number of apps. I too was a first gen iPhone user and was very frustrated with the 3G experience. Since doing the above, I am once again a very happy and productive iPhone 3G user. I know its a pain to do this, but the bugs will get fixed at some point. I would never go back to my old phones - they were just phones.

Can i use iCloud keychain with my own passwords and not with what is assigned and stored?

    tammersalem wrote:) <-HDMI-> (HDTV)
    My main concerns are:
-If I use iTunes on my main computer, will it then be available to Apple TV?
-If I use Apple TV to download will it be available to my Main computer?
-Can the Apple TV use a media server for storage over LAN (using NTFS Samab or otherwise)?
Basically iTunes feeds AppleTv with media either syncing (copying to it) or streaming live.
Media must be compatible with AppleTV.
AppleTV requires a proper iTunes instance running - it cannot access a NAS directly.
If you store media in a folder on a NAS and it's part of the computer iTunes library (just stored on the NAS vs internal/external drive), then when running iTunes makes this content available to AppleTV.
    Data will travel:
NAS > network > iTunes > network to AppleTV
As the path is potentially slower than internal/external attached drive > iTunes > network > AppleTV, it may or may not work robustly for streaming.
If AppleTv is set to sync (it can also stream in this mode), when you purchase direct on AppleTV, the media should sync back to where the itunes library is stored (via iTunes) to keep things in sync and to allow you to backup the media.
You cannot drag/drop media to/from AppleTv across the network, nor can it directly access storage itself - iTunes is an essential cog in the wheel.
The majority of commercial 'in-built iTunes media servers' will not work directly with AppleTV as it has to be 'paired' with iTunes by entering a numerical code in iTunes and does not simply see 'shared libraries'.

  • Skip Base station and just use AppleTV for WiFi?

    Hello all.
I am currently using Airport base station extreme (6th edition) with the Apple TV 3rd edition. My question is,
I'm moving out and I wanted to split the two up. I would take the base station and leave the AppleTV for my roommate.
Is it possible to use the AppleTV to broadcast  WiFi single and use it for channels if I plug the cable modem directly to the AppleTv?
Roommate will only be using the TV with an antenna for local channels and apple TV for netflix. They still want WiFi in the house though for internet.
    What are my options?

If you want to use it (without a data plan) as a GPS, you'll need to purchase a navigation app that has built-in maps.  Navigon is one, although I can't recommend it.  Google for reviews of others.

I will have 5 TVs over 5 chairs.  Nothing more than power to the TV is hardwired.
    Questions:
Using AppleTV can I use the same Apple Username/ID for all AppleTV units?
Can I use the same Netflix ID on multiple AppleTV units?
Can multiple AppleTV units stream from one Airport?

Should be ok in theory but in practice you''l only know when you try.
I was curious about the need for Internet connectivity, seems that is a must.
If it's copy protected material, then yes.
My thought with the external drive was to download the movie files to 5 drives and connect each to an ATV.  This would eliminate the machine and wireless network cost.  BUT it seems that this is not supported...
    Correct, not supported.

  • When do i have to use a gre over ipsec tunnel? i have heard that when i m using a routing protocol and vpn site to site i need a gre tunnel

i have configured a network with ospf and a vpn site to site without gre tunnel and it works very well. I want to know, when do i have to use gre tunnel over ipsec

    Jose,
It sounds like you currently have an IPsec Virtual Tunnel Interface (VTI) configured. By this, I mean that you have a Tunnel interface running in "tunnel mode ipsec ipv4" rather than having a crypto map applied to a physical interface. In the days before VTIs, it was necessary to configure GRE over IPsec in order to pass certain types of traffic across an encrypted channel. When using pure IPsec with crypto maps, you cannot pass multicast traffic without implementing GRE over IPsec. Today, IPsec VTIs and GRE over IPsec accomplish what is effectively the same thing with a few exceptions. For example, by using GRE over IPsec, you can configure multiple tunnels between two peers by means of tunnels keys, pass many more types of traffic rather than IP unicast and multicast (such as NHRP as utilized by DMVPN), and you can also configure multipoint GRE tunnels whereas VTIs are point to point.
Here's a document which discusses VTIs in more depth: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/sec_conn_vpnips/configuration/xe-3s/sec-sec-for-vpns-w-ipsec-xe-3s-book/sec-ipsec-virt-tunnl.html#GUID-A568DA9D-56CF-47C4-A866-B605804179E1

  • Why is using AppleTv more reliable than Remote?

WE have itunes setup on a PC upstairs, we have an AppleTV setup in the family room, to our TV and to the stereo using the optical out. EVERTTHING  is connected with hardwired Ethernet cable!
When we use the REMOTE ap from our iPhones to play iTunes through the stereo, the music often stutters. If we switch to using the AppleTV to play our iTunes, it plays flawlessly.  Why?

The music does not sutter constantly, but ever couple of minutes or so it cuts out for a second, restarts, and repeats a couple times. This is while using the REMOTE app to control the PC iTunes.
If we use the AppleTV interface (on the TV) and the Apple TV remote-control hardware, no stutters.
Again this makes no sense. In both cases the source files are coming from the PC iTunes, over wired Ethernet to the AppleTV.
Of course when using the REMOTE app, the PC iTunes being controlled by the REMOTE app is set to use AirPlay to play to the AppleTV,
and with using the AppleTV, the AppleTV talks directly to the PC iTunes.
But either way, files are just moving from the PC iTunes to the AppleTV and then to the stereo.

  • Problem with Cisco VPN since upgrade to Snow Leopard

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard a couple of hours ago I can no longer open up my CiscoVPN application (version 4.9.01) which I use to connect to my network at work. When I try now I just get an "Error 51: message"
*Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem.*
Please make sure that you have at least one network interface that is currently active and has an IP address and start this application again.
I can still connect to the network if I use Parallels and use the Windows VPN client - but that's not really the point! I've tried the popular suggestion for Error 51 errors in the past (typing "sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN" via Terminal) which doesn't work.
    Any ideas or help appreciated.
    Acculess

I was able to get it working without re-downloading the client (4.9.0.1.0080 was already installed). I noticed that System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN had been removed during the upgrade to snow leopard, so I pulled it back off of a Time Machine backup. Restoring that directory and doing a 'sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart' seemed to fix things up.
