Using AppleTV as a kiosk display

Hi, all -
I know others have asked about this already, so please forgive the double-post, but I haven't yet seen a satisfactory answer to the question.
Can AppleTV be used as a stand-alone device to drive a display for public information signage? I recently attended an event at a banquet hall and saw a plasma display with a very conspicuous AppleTV box mounted next to it. The display was off, but the next time I passed by, it was on, and showing the names and room locations of the day's events. There was a music bed underneath, and the style of the text-only slides was very Apple (it looked like it came from Keynote). Simple show, just white-on-black text and simple dissolves.
I work at a high school district and we recently installed three 16x9 LCD displays in each building, and I connected retired WinXP machines to each one (locked in cabinets nowhere near the displays - we used long VGA cables so the PCs could be kept secure) and created a simple hack allowing the PowerPoint author to just remotely drop revised PPS files onto the computers, which restart at 3 am and launch the updated projects. That way, each screen can have its own slideshow.
After seeing the AppleTV unit in use at the banquet hall, I decided that would be a better way to go since it already has built-in capability to play high-quality video in addition to mere slideshows (my current setup uses PCs that are a few years old, I wouldn't burden them with video playback). I did have the forethought to install long component video cables on our displays, too, so we'd be ready for some future playback device such as a DVD player or other STB.
From what I gather, the closest I might be able to do right now would be to load slides as photos for the screen saver mode on AppleTV, or maybe switch to using Keynote (or Final Cut) to create QuickTime slideshows which can incorporate both still slides and video clips... but the latter would presume that AppleTV can play videos within its screen saver OR be set to loop a playlist or single video continuously.
I point out that the display at the banquet hall was off one moment then on the next to indicate that I didn't see if the displays came on to an already-running show, or someone from the venue turned them on then hit "Play" on an AppleTV remote to get them going.
Anyhoo, if anybody has new info regarding looping, or mixing stills & videos in a screensaver playlist (and if that playlist can be altered remotely without stopping AppleTV from playing it), I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hmm, sounds like it should work. You only need ATV if you can't connect a computer directly to the monitor. If you can, you can probably accomplish what you need via QuickTime exports out of Keynote.
I don't have any direct experience with Keynote but in a demonstration I saw that you could export Keynote to Quicktime movie. And yes, QT Pro player allows looping.
You could also export static content be it photos, graphics, or image exports of Keynote slides to your iPhoto library and push that to the ATV to create the loop.
If you want a combination of static images and motion video, doing it all through Keynote and exporting as a QT file should work. Try it!
Hey, maybe you can make a QT movie test and take it to an Apple store on USB memory stick and see if they'll let you try it out? Bring your credit card in case you fall in love with it

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Can I use my tv as a display for my macbook air?

If i I bought Apple tv and plugged it into my tv, could i then use that tv as a display for my macbook air as if my tv were a mac display?
I have a macbook air but I dont want to buy a whole new display for it which is why i want to use my tv.
I do however want to purchase AppleTv
I am currently running snow leopard, but will update in a heartbeat to lion if needed.

Connect the Macbook directly through the TV using a Mini Display Port to HDMI ('With Audio' if needed).

You cannot connect the Macbook to Apple TV.

  • Anyone else annoyed that you have to keep computer active to use appleTV 2

Its 2011, I know longer find a need for a desktop now that laptops are so powerfull.  I am really annoyed that in order to use my new AppleTV I need to keep my laptop from falling asleep.  Ok, I could probably live with that if there was a way to close the display on my laptop without putting it to sleep, but as of now the best I can do, since I don't have an external display, is setup the energy saving settings to never go to sleep, but turn off display after 15 minutes, then either leave my laptop open, or close it almost shut with a towel in the middle.  One would think, that the geniuses over at apple devolopment would figure out a way for the Apple TV to send a signal across the network that would wake up a closed(asleep) laptop or desktop.  I can wake my computer up remotely over the internet from across the country, but I can't get my Apple TV to wake my computer up across the house.  Sounds to me like you guys dropped the ball on this one.  I mean who leaves there laptop/desktop on all day when they are at work, at the least they put it to sleep(or it goes to sleep on it's own after an hour).  How annoying is it to have to go into your office, wake up your iMac, login into your account (if applicable), open iTunes, then go back into the living room/bedroom every time you want to use your apple TV.  If you can't make it at least wake up an asleep mac, why not put iTunes on the apple TV and set it up so iCloud can stream your movies and music to the Apple TV.  I mean come on Apple. Where is the innovation in this product? One would be better off purchasing a mac mini, and using the TV as your display. Then you would be able to do anything with itunes, you could use the mac mini as your main homeshare hub and you would be able to do anything from your tv.
There is only one other solution I can think of, and I am not sure if it is even possible,  but if you could put Itunes on a wifi hard drive with all your libraries stored there, then maybe the AppleTV can access the Network Drive and solve my delema.  Does anyone know if this is possible?

Yes, wake for network access is checked.  You would think that would take care of the problem, but no it does not.  Bottom line is apple dropped the ball when it came to the AppleTV 2.  It is just as easy for me to plug my laptop into my TV every time I want to watch a movie through iTunes as it is to wake up my laptop every time I want to use my AppleTV.   If I have to tunr on, log in, wake up, or basically use my laptop to use an AppleTV,  why not just plug my laptop into my TV, then I get full internet access and more, not just itunes streaming and access to internets apps of Apple's choice. like MLB and NBA, but no NFL or Hockey.  no Pandora, Hulu, Blockbuster, Facebook, Twitter, ..., ect. I really hope Apple sees my point and takes this into consideration.

  • How do I use my iPad as the display and input device for my Mac Mini?

I plan to have the following stereo configuration:
Integrated amplifier with USB input that supports up to 24/192 audio, the Peachtree Nova 125
Mac Mini with USB connection to amp, wifi to the Internet, housed in the equipment cabinet with the integrated amp, no other music source.  No display or keyboard connected to the Mac Mini.
I would like to use my iPad as the display and to control the Mac Mini to run Pandora, iTunes, Spotify, podcasts, etc.
Anyone have success with this general configuration?

You need a set of apps (one for iPad and another for computer) like Team viewer or Go to my PC

Unfortunately, that is not possible. The computer only can "output" your display image, it cannot "input" an image from an external computer and display it on your MacBook's retina display.

My iPad IOS software is 8.2 and my Apple TV software is at 7.1.  The TV displays the Apple Menu.  The “Settings” does however displays the General menu allowing me to see:
    Apple software:          7.1 (7003)
Apple TV:                   Model No. A1464, Part No. MD199B/A

It does not display the iPad screen but when I use the BT Sport App I can hear the sound but there is no video.  I have searched the internet for a solution to no avail. The problem first arose when the IOS was at 8.1+ but it worked correctly briefly when I updated to IOS 8.2.  Can you help please?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • I want to use an IPad (w/retina display-newest) in my church hooked up to a projector

I want to use an IPad (w/retina display-newest) in my church hooked up to a projector and shown on a screen.  I'd like to do it wirelessly as the projector will be installed in the ceiling.  I am not sure exactly what I would need to get this set up. I do not have wifi at church or cellular but would be getting the iPad (not yet purchased) with wifi only.  If I use Apple TV to hook up the projector to, would it need wifi to work if I will only be using the ipad for documents, worksheets (much like what a school/professor would use) or other things that an app could do (draw a line, etc.)

Epson projectors have such a feature, so if you're going to buy a new projector, you might start with their units. The app is described here:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Landing/ProjectorApp.do
and there's a projector compability list linked from the very bottom of the page. There may be other projector manufacturers with similar apps, but I don't know for sure. All will probably also require a local WiFi network set up, though said network should not need Internet access if that's an issue for you.
    Regards.

  • Is it possible to use old Apple Flat Panel Display (62 watt power adapter) with MacBookPro 13" Mid-2012 running 10.8.4? Tried mini display to VGA cable

Is it possible to use old Apple Flat Panel Display (62 watt power adapter) with a MacBookPro 13" Mid-2012 laptop?  Would like to use larger screen when working at home.  I have a mini display port to VGA cable and have tried to hook up the old display but it seems not to work.  When I try to activate the screen on the old display-- a window comes up in the MacBookPro and asks me if I want to shut down the computer.  What little I have read it that the MacBookPro had Thunderbolt and the old display may not be compatible?  Any assistance would be appreciated.

This doesn't have anything to do with your problem, but it will likely cause other issues with your e-mail.
Here's my standard recommendation concerting the use of A-V software to deal with potentially infected messages:
Never use ClamXav (or any other A-V software) to move (quarantine) or delete e-mail. It will corrupt the mailbox index which could cause loss of other e-mail and other issues with functions such as searching. It may also leave the original e-mail on your ISP's e-mail server and will be re-downloaded to your hard drive the next time you check for new mail.
So, if you choose to "Scan e-mail content for malware and phishing" in the General Preferences, make sure you do not elect to either Quarantine or Delete infected files.
When possibly infected e-mail files are found:
Right-click/Control-click on either the infection or file name in the ClamXav window.
Select "Reveal In Finder" from the pop-up menu.
When the window opens, double-click on the file to open the message in your e-mail client application.
Read the message and if you agree that it is junk/spam/phishing then use the e-mail client's delete button to delete it (this is especially important when the word "Heuristics" appears in the infection name).
If you disagree and choose to retain the message, return to ClamXav and choose "Exclude From Future Scans" from the pop-up menu.
If this is a g-mail account and those messages continue to show up after you have deleted them in the above manner, you may need to log in to webmail using your browser, go to the "All Mail" folder, find the message(s) and use the delete button there to permanently delete them from the server.
To fix the corrupted mailbox index(es), highlight each one that was corrupted and choose Rebuild from the appropriate menu.

  • Using my widescreen tv as display

using my widescreen as a display , works well but i can t get the top menu bar or the bottom dock options to fit into the screen. i m guessing this is a format problem with my tv but i can t seem to get anything to work with that either. any suggestions about what i can do in my settings to get these to fit????????? thx

Have you gone into the settings and played around with all the different resolution sizes? I had the same problem but now it fits perfect.
Most of them wont work, it'll just be a blue screen, but you should find one that works.

  • Can I use my iMac as a 'display' for my MacBook Pro?

Hi all, I am really hoping someone can help me here.
I am wondering if I can use my 24" iMac as a display for my MacBook Pro (both running Snow Leopard).
It's my father's 80th birthday party in about 24 hours time. I am doing up the music and slideshow (thanks Apple - so easy!).
My plan was to simply take my iMac and use it. However, I managed to drop the wireless keyboard (darn those dogs) and now my keyboard won't work. I have no backup keyboards here (gave the wired one to Dad to use with his Mac mini). I live in a country area with no access to a Mac store and it will take more than 24 hours to get a new one. Went to my local 'other computer' general store last night: I really don't want to buy an ugly black keyboard..... I have just had a great idea:
Can I network my MacBook Pro and use it as the source for the slide show and simply use the iMac as a display? I have plenty of DVI adaptors but am just not sure how I would go about the software side of things? Or should I simply buy an ugly PC keyboard (and if I do, will the WIndows button work as an Apple button???)
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers
    Rod

How can i copy files from one external hard drive to another using macbook pro with retina display?

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • How can I change the order of thumbnails so it affects the order in the lightbox when using the composition widget - lightbox display?

Hi, I'm making my portfolio in Muse, and I'm using the composition widget - lightbox display. I imported all the images and then I wanted to reorganize the thumbnails - and when I do that, the order in the lightbox doesn't change and so it's not the same as the order of the thumbnails (after rearranging them). Please let me know if there is a way to fix this quickly, or do I have to do it all one more time

The order the items display in a composition widget is the front to back order of the items. You can rearrange the stacking order of the thumbnails/triggers using the Layers panel and/or the Object > Bring To Front, Send To Back, etc. menu items to adjust the order they're displayed during auto play or when clicking the next/previous buttons.
