Using Appleworks or Word, in Leopard .. screens move, when pulldown menu..

When working on a document, and I highlight a sentence & pull down the font screen to change the font (several documents open) my document dulls, and moves. If I pull the menu down, and move to highlight new font very slowly, it might change it without the document moving, but it may do the dulling & moving bit repeatedly. Very frustrating! Do I need to change a preference..where? Anyone else with this problem?

If you are using an Apple Mighty mouse, if you open up your documents, and you press those side buttons on the mouse, does this cause your issue to occur?
It could be a feature called "expose"
If you go to system preferences > expose & spaces and you can change settings for it. You can also go to system prefrences > keyboard and mouse, and go to mouse, and change the button that says expose to something else or " - "
This will probably stop this from happening in the future.
If you notice it happening when you place the mouse in the corners of the screen, this could be related to "hot corners" which are also located in the expose system preference aswell.

  • Jittering in Leopard QT Movies when displayed in OS 10.3.9

I have several QT movies made when running my current OS (Leopard 10.5.4 which has QuickTime 7.3 Pro) using Final Cut Express 4. When I put those QT movies into my DVD Studio Pro 3.0 project running OS 10.3.9, they jitter badly on slow pans but display perfectly in OS 10.3.9's QuickTime Player (QT 7.1.3 Pro). Other earlier QT movies made in the same way but in FCE 3.0 running OS 10.3.9 display perfectly in my DVD SP project. It looks as though there is something different in the movies made under QT 7.3 which display OK in QT 7.1.3 + OS 10.3.9 but not in DVD SP 3.0 + OS 10.3.9.
While running OS 10.3.9 I have loaded the troublesome QT movies into QT Player and Saved As... under another name but jittering remains in DVD SP. Is there some way that I can convert my troublesome QT movies to remove the jittering? Perhaps by loading them into a non-Apple software and exporting as QT? Or by loading the troublesome movies into FCE 4 + Leopard and exporting from FCE using QT Conversion, and if so what settings under "Options".
(For the avoidance of puzzlement, here is why I am alternating between OSs: Most of my QT movies were made in FCE 3.0 + OS 10.3.9, and all of my DVD SP 3.0 project was and continues to be made in OS 10.3.9 When I upgraded to Leopard I found that FCE 3.0 would not work properly so I upgraded to FCE 4. I cannot upgrade DVD SP 3.0 because it is no longer available as a stand-alone software but only as part of the hugely expensive Final Cut bundle most of which I do not need. I therefore continued to make more QT movies in FCE 4 + Leopard and then put them into my DVD SP project in OS 10.3.9. All seemed OK until I noticed the jittering. I have several troublesome movies and want to avoid re-editing them from scratch in FCE 3.0 + OS 10.3.9).
    Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

After a full-on ten-fingered assault on my keyboard by a three-year-old, my Screen Display area seems to have outgrown the display. Every time I move the mouse the display moves from side o side to accommodate. It really stinks, since I can't see what is on the eft side of the screen when I have the scroll bar visible. Help!!!!!

If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 4.
    1. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, then from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Check Now. Quit and relaunch your browser.
    2. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder should open. Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:
    Flash Player (failing).plugin
You may be prompted for your login password.
    3. Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from this page:
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    4. If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked Enable plug-ins.
    5. Select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.
    6. In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    Close the window. Then select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

  • Want an option to having a REAL full-screen view when in writing mode in Word (as there was in 2003)

For the present Word version (365) I have not found a way to be able to use the entire/total/really full screen estate when using writing mode in Word. (Perhaps there is a way, not discovered by me yet?) But what I want both in Word 365 and foremost in the
next iteration of Word, is the option to choose - when in writing/editing mode - the entire screen real estate, with NO columns on each side of the screen and with NO Ribbon or other stuff on top and nothing at the bottom of the screen either.
This must be possible to establish as an option?!
The Word 2003 had such a feature, but it (completely?) disappeared as an option from 2007 and later, as far as I can see, and this lack of being able to choose using a totally blank screen, from bezel to bezel, with no other things than what you write on
it, is for me and many other writers, who often also use a machine with a rather small screen, a significant missing feature!
As I see it, the real estate that is "given away" to give space to the two vertical columns (to give a for me the unnessary and unwanted "impression/illusion" of having to deal with a sheet of paper placed on the middle of the screen),
this real estate should instead be used as a typing "place". In other words: Many writers and others would really like to be able to use ALL the screen from left to right and from top to bottom to be filled with letters and words!
Can and will this technically be done? So that we again (as in 2003) can be given the option to choose (real) full-screen view?
I would really like to get some positive feedback from developers and decision makers in the Word developer team at Microsoft about the possibility of re-establishing this now seemingly missing option.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your feedback.
As far as I know, this is currently not available in Office 2013. We are sorry that at this time we are not able to edit documents in a full screen mode that "with NO columns on each side of the screen and with NO Ribbon or other stuff on top and
nothing at the bottom of the screen either. "
We have passed this information to the product group for consideration for a future product or update.
Please be assured that our developers strive to capture Microsoft users' ideas and are working hard to create a more powerful and easy-to-use product.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • My screen moves....WHY?

When I use my mouse or pen, my screen moves side to side or up and down following the mouse. It will HELP! How do I make it stop?

    Welcome to the Forums!
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing tab and turn off Zoom. If it's already off, toggle it on then off again. (It most likely got activated by an inadvertent press of the command-option-8 keys or by holding the ctrl key during mouse scrolling.)
    Hope this helps...

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available from Apple - the new Pages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.) Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (Again, the older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Nothing will open Database documents. You would need to export the data as ASCII and import it into another database program; you will lose your formatting and calculations will come over as the result, not the calculation.

  • I've just upgraded to "Lion" from "Snow Leopard" which to my surprise does not support "Appleworks" I've used Appleworks for a number of years for all correspondence etc. and need to continue using this software. Do I need to go back to Snow Leopard?   d

I've just upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard and to my surprise it does not support my 'Appleworks' application software. Ihave used Appleworks for all correspondence for six years and need to refer to the files (letters etc.) from time to time. Is my only option to revert back to Snow Leopard?

The reason appleworks no longer runs is because it is a powerpc based application.  Since it's end-of-life in 2007, it was never converted to intel architecture, since it was dropped as a supported product.  It continued to run on intel machines via rosetta, but OS X Lion formally discontinues all support for powerpc based programs.  Powerpc based applications can only be run on OS X 10.6.8 or earlier releases (ones that still support rosetta).
So, it does sound like your best option is to move to iWorks' Pages now - otherwise you will be stuck with an increasingly more outdated operating system.  And if you should buy a new machine, it would not run the older versions of OS X anyway, so at some point you have to leave appleworks behind and move on.  Seems best to do it now, before Pages perhaps also moves forward to a point where it too may no longer support ancient file formats.

  • I tried to install a new hard drive using Snow Leopard to back up with Time Machine. When I installed the new HD I installed Leopard (10.5) on it and tried to use time machine to restore the backup I had made using 10.6. Kernel panic screen occurred.

I backed up my system using 10.6 Snow Leopard's Time Machine to an external hard drive. I did this because I purchased a new internal hard drive to upgrade my 2007 White Macbook from 80GB to 320GB. When I installed the new hard drive, I installed 10.4 (Tiger) and then 10.5 (Leopard) and once Leopard was in I tried to use Time Machine to restore my backup from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and received a kernal panic screen directly after the bootup.
The screen had code asking for 10.6, so does this mean that the computer is searching for Snow Leopard? If so, how can I do this? Will a bootable drive with Snow Leopard on it be able to solve the issue or will I somehow need to find a way to wipe out this new hard drive?

    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
