Using Apps on ipod touch

Hello,
Just bought an ipod touch 32Gb 3rd Gen.
I clicked on the Apps icon and went to Free Apps and thought of downloading a GPS app (it said Free).
However when I went to install it it asked for my paswword twice and then sent me to my payment details!! I was concerned so cancelled as I thought it was a FREE App!!
1. What should I have done?
2. Have I been charged for something? I only wanted a FREE App.
If it was a FREE app should I have been asked for my password? If so why take me to my payment details?
Confused OAP

If it was a FREE app should I have been asked for my password?
Being asked to enter in your iTunes Store account password is normal, even for free apps and updates. All apps, even the free ones, are tied to your iTunes Store account.
If so why take me to my payment details?
I'm not sure. But Apple's tightening up on security with the iTunes Store and reportedly will be asking for things like the credit card security code more often, so that may be what you encountered even if it was a free app that you wanted to download.
Regards.

The computer that I originally used with my ipod touch is dead, so I am now synching with another computer.  I had to restore the software of the ipod, I am able to drop and drag my tunes back to the ipod but not my purchased apps.  I have no problem doing this with other ipods that I have synced and backed up to this computer.

Just turning off Cloud will not prevent him from turning it back on.
Rignt now, if he uses the App store, iTunes thinks it's talking to me.

First, turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account, while your sim is still in the phone. Then: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Give it to your grandson & he gat then set it up as he wants.
Important your turn iMessage & FaceTime off to disassociate the phone from your Apple ID. Apple "claims" to have fixed this with iOS 6.0, but until I can absolutely confirm such, I still recommend you turn all of that stuff off first.

I plan to loan my iPod Touch to a friend here in the USA for one month to use on his trip to Europe.  How can I keep my iTunes content and my account private, but enable him to create his own iTunes account to use on my iPod Touch?  Also, do I need to de-register my iPod Touch for all of this to happen--and have him register my iPod Touch in his name for that month he is using it in Europe?

The suggested advice in this support article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1478 wasn't a help at all, because the option "enable disc use" in the summary window of itunes doesn't appear.
    *From the article*:
    Products Affected
iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, iPod mini, iPod, iTunes 8 for >Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac
No mention of the Touch, it works differently from other iPods and has no "disk mode" as such.
I think it can be used as a storage device by using a 3rd party App, search the the App Store for such items.
Photos transferred to your Touch via iTunes will be of severely compromised quality i.e 640x480 pixel resolution and file size around 600-700 kb. These can be retrieved, again using a 3rd party application on your computer, such as [Touch Copy|http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy> but you will not get back original quality images.
    Good luck,

If your iPod Touch is too old for iOS 5 or later... there is not much you can do.
When/if you get a later model iDevice you will be able to Download Past Purchases using the Original ID that made those Purchases. (providing they are still supported by the Developer)

  • HT1414 I was using my new iPod touch when...

I was using my new iPod Touch when the screen suddenly turned unresponsive, after a dozen seconds the iPod's screen turned white with colored lines. It is unresponsive and won't allow me to reset it from my computer. I was using an app and I want my iPod to work! Please help, I have many personal videos that to me seem more valuable than the device itself, please help!!!

    - Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't turn it off then let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try again.
    - If still unsuccessful then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Using phone as Ipod Touch

I have an original iphone I was using like an ipod touch for wifi and apps etc... not connected to at&t. After I updated to 3.0 it is prompting me to activate phone with at&t. I don't want to sign up for phone service with AT & T i just want to use my iphone on wifi, for music and apps? Can I revert back to 2.0? Can i register phone without signing up for service with at&t?

The answer is yes to all questions.
You need to leave the no longer activated SIM card inserted in the 3G - the SIM card that was used with the 3G when it was activated in order to install a firmware update on the iPhone, or restore the iPhone with iTunes if needed or wanted.
As it is possible to sync more than one iPod with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer with each iPod able to have its own sync preferences, the same applies to the iPhone.
Under the Applications tab for the iPhone sync preferences for each iPhone, choose Selected Applications. Select the applications in the window below that you want installed. Deselecting an application in the window below followed by a sync will remove the deselected application from the iPhone.

You can only sync with one computer. and y have to sync to get apps from computer to the iPod. You can sync using the manual method.
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
You can copy iTunes purchases from iPod to iTunes by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    Try resetting the iPod:
To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices

  • 3rd party apps on iPod Touch starting February - Now I'll get one

Nice moves Apple. (3rd party apps on iPod Touch and iPhone + DRM-tunes for .99$)
    http://www.apple.com/startpage/
Now you're finally convincing me to get a Touch. By February.
Thanks for listening to popular demand.

I hope they can make the date. They have a big task in front of them especially for the iPhone as a bug or virus can take down the Cell system if the proper safe guards are not in place.
I bet Apple has been working on this even before they launched the iPhone, but did not want to tell anyone as the development cycle was going to be so long.
Apple has always prided themselves on having the best platforms for porting applications. Going away from this is unlikely, but the iPhone and iPod touch took them in a direction that is more complicated than a PC on the internet.
For those that have wanted the iPod touch or Iphone to have more PDA features, I think this move by Apple will clearly put them into that market. The only issue I see is getting directly into the memory to store documents to support the applications. You used to be able to do on older iPods.
Anyway, great job Apple you have restored my faith in you following the right path.

    Hi Luke,
Currently there's no program you can download and sync it to your iPod. However, there are some web apps you can use. This means the application will be loaded in safari. Here's some:
