Using ARD to track inventory

Here is what i would like to do with ARD. Can anyone tell me if it will work.
I want to setup a dedicated mac to run scheduled scans on the network. Take that data and put it into mysql then have it viewable by my boss using php. I know i can get php to display data from mysql. The question is can i get ARD reports in to mysql. I need this to be automatic so the site is updated as close to real time as possible Does anyone know how to do this?

Best Practice Advice - Using ARD for Inventorying System Resources Info

Hello All,
I hope this is the place I can post a question like this. If not please direct me if there is another location for a topic of this nature.
We are in the process of utilizing ARD reporting for all the Macs in our district (3500 +/- a few here and there). I am looking for advice and would like some best practices ideas for a project like this. ANY and ALL advice is welcome. Scheduling reports, utilizing a task server as opposed to the Admin workstation, etc. I figured I could always learn from those with experience rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. Thanks for your time.

hey, i am also intrested in any tips. we are gearing up to use ARD for all of our macs current and future.
i am having a hard time with entering the user/pass for each machine, is there and eaiser way to do so? we dont have nearly as many macs running as you do but its still a pain to do each one over and over. any hints? or am i doing it wrong?

Track Stolen / Missing / Misplaced computer using ARD

Hi there, a teacher reported to us that one of their Macbook has gone missing from their classroom cart. ARD reported that the missing Macbook was last contacted 3 days ago. We strongly feel that the Macbook is still within the campus and was just swapped or misplaced.
Using ARD, what would be the best way to alert an admin once the missing computer reconnects to the network?

Hi Marlon,
If security is a risk and you're wanting to protect your Macs, I'd suggest you do the following;
1. Use the Firmware Password Utility to create a firmware password - this prevents the Mac being booted from
a) The OS DVD to reformat or change passwords
b) Firewire Target mode
c) In single user mode.
Only users with the Admin password can login and disable the Firmware Password Utility. * Don't forget your Admin password *
2. Have a look at the following software which protects any Mac which has been stolen and could lead to it being located.

It's easy to do the above, harder to replace a stolen machine.

Cannot copy files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1

I'm having an issue copying files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1. Both machines are running OS 10.4.10 and have all of the available updates have been applied. When I connect to the Mac at work using ARD, I can see everything without any problems. However, when I attempt to copy a file onto my PowerBook desktop, I lose my connection to it and ARD tries to re-establish a connection and just keep looping. I'm stumped as to why this keeps happening. When I try the above from work using my PowerBook, there are no problems. Could this problem be related to my DSL Carrier (Verizon). Anyone have any ideas? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff thanks for that, the only problem is I cant update any of the system software at work
And I cant just copy the folders over and use my iPod as a hard drive to take them home and put them on my iTunes as the file names on some tracks are to long

When you say a diffrent network, do you mean accessing the computer over the internet?
VNC is built into the computer, so you don't need ARD to remote into a computer. To access your parents computer over the internet will most likely require configuring their router/firewall. And unless they're paying for a static ip, you'll also need some way to track their computer.
OR
you can use logmein, or teamviewer. Both programs are desgined to access a computer over the internet. Most of the time they don't require re-configuring the firewall.

I am using ARD 3.5.1 cannot generate reports

I am using ARD 3.5.1 on a snow leopard network. I can access nodes on the network and gather information(hardware) just fine
but when i try to get reports i.e. application usage it does not generate report just runs,, i get no error just keeps running.
i can remote ilnto devices just fine any ideas how to fix this because we really need software inventory controls

I think i have the resolution to this you must be logged into YOUR device with the local administrator password and the reporting functionality works

Using ARD to audit License Keys

Scenario: The company I work for has a lot of VMWare Fusion licenses that have not been tracked. The license number exists within a text file in /Library/Application Support/VMWare Fusion/ folder.
Is it possible for ARD to be able to audit not simply the number of computers running VMWare Fusion, but to specifically report the License Keys from all of the installs?
If it's not built-in then I would imagine that this can somehow be scripted, but my knowledge of AppleScript is limited. If I am correct that this is the route to go, does anyone have any recommendations on where to start looking? If it is possible I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already created something like this, but so far google hasn't helped.

Well not exactly an automated process, here's what I was able to do without using applescript or customizing any built-in reporting features. I hope it helps someone besides myself...
VMWare Fusion 3.x stores it's license info in /Library/Application Support/VMWare Fusion/license-fusion*
Version 4.x stores it in /Library/Preferences/VMWare Fusion/license-fusion* (I may be remembering the pathnames slightly wrong, so confirm on your own system - you'll know it when you find it -- same goes for the command below).
You can use ARD to issue commands to clients via terminal, so I did this to have every selected client email my address with the full license file. It includes what version they are running, plus the license key (amongst other info from the file that may or may not be useful to some people):
cat /Library/Application\ Support/VMWare\ Fusion/license-fusion* /Library/Preferences/VMWare\ Fusion/license-fusion* | mail -s "VMWare License" [email protected]
This will send the full content of the file for either 3.x or 4.x (and error within ARD of "no file found" for the opposite) to whatever email address you specify, from the email address configured for the client computer. This will allow you to know what license number is running on what system. You can then use this emailed info to assemble a list manually. It may not be assembled in a nice & neat ARD report that can be imported into other apps (such as HSTracker, which is a nice tool btw), but it *will* save you the time of having to visit each workstation -- this will allow you to gather all of this information (albeit in a raw form) without leaving your desk. It can then be compiled in whatever method you need (for me, manually entry into HSTracker and then linking to the computers it's installed on).
Again, I hope this helps other people, and if anyone uses this and discoveres anything else that's worth sharing I would appreciate it. In case you find something that I didn't.

DURIM - Okay. I would expect the "Cache Warning" message because your default directories would not be the same as the ones in the settings file I generated.
If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]? We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro? If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. I cannot afford to activate the subscription for that product and take the chance of it not working either. I depend on those two programs religiously. Here is the files that you requested. How can I use ALL audio tracks in multiclip editing?

I want to be able to use all audio tracks after the multiclip cut.
It's only a two camera shoot, but I want to be able to use the ambient room sound from the second camera ... and control its level (in relation to the master audio track on the first camera) AFTER the cuts are made.
Is this possible in multiclip editing? And how does one go about it?
Apologies. I've spent an hour or so in the manual, and it isn't clear ... or I'm just not finding the right reference.

Sorry if I'm steering you down a path you don't want to go or even if there's a better way but I wouldn't be ding complex audio mixing anywhere near the multiclip interface. Export your reference movie or nest the multiclip project into another sequence, bring in your additional tracks, get to work. Just my preferences, I put a bunch of rough keyframes in the audio tracks and enter some markers (and make a lot of paper notes). Then I go back using the large mixer window to do the fine tweaking.
Stick around for a couple of days, some other multiclip users with more experience than I will offer some more useful suggestions.

The with Back to my Mac service on you see your mac in the Shared column, hit Share Screen & your good - on ARD I don't see my remote Mac listed anywhere in that program.

ARD, to the best of my knowledge, does not work via Back To My Mac. Certainly it's not an direct or obvious feature, though I can't say that there might not be a workaround I've not heard of.

Upgrade clients to OS 10.4.5 using ARD

I am having trouble sending out OS 10.4.5 to client computers(emacs and imacs) using ARD 2.2
They are currently running OS 10.4.2.
How can I get this working. I've downloaded 10.4.5 to the admin computer then manage>install packages
Mac OSXUpdCombo10.4.5PPC.pkg
restart target computer after installation
then it fails.

how many are you trying this on at the same time? does it work if you do one by itself?
alternatively, you can send this unix command to install all available packages:
softwareupdate -i -a
send as user "root"

first go to the Tolls>>RT Taget [x.x.x.x] Options and configure
the VI Server to use TCP. Then add your desktop machine to the Access
List on the TCP/IP Access tab. Now VI server should be able to export

Problem copying to student machines using ARD

I manage a school lab and have been using Remote Desktop, all of a sudden the copy command to student computers stopped working. I found how to do a clean install and updated ARD but it still isn't working. I can access the machines, control them,everything but copy to them. my student machines are on 10.6.8 and I'm using ARD 3.7.2. I'm wondering if updating my machines to 10.7 would help? Any suggestions would really be appreciated

When things "suddenly stop working", that can be an indication that somthing about the underlying network has changed. You might want to check if the IT group has changed out, or reconfigured, any networking hardware recently.

Use shipments for track and trace

I'm investigating the option of using Shipments for Track & Trace.
The process that we would like to cover is as follows:
1. (web) order is created by customer. The goods will be collected in our shop.
2. STO is created, based on SO. supplying site/plant is our DC, receiving site / plant is our shop
3. The DC post goods issue (for outbound delivery)
4. The goods are picked up by our carrier
5. The goods arrive at our carriers warehouse
6. The goods are issued from our carriers warehouse
7. Our shop receives the goods (Goods Receipt on STO)
We would like to monitor step 4, 5 and 6
We thought of creating a shipment for the delivery and either use the Deadlines or Stages.
I would like to get some advice about what is the best solution.

As far as my knowledge, the functionality of tracking and tracing the vehicle in a shipment is not possible in ERP.
You may want to explore the use of Transportation Management (TM8.0) for this purpose.
