Using ATV as a Media Server to Stream From?

Is it possible to use the ATV to stream music from, to say an Airport Express. I am exploring the concept of using the ATV as a media server for a whole hose audio system. I realize I can use it as a simple analog source to the whole house distribution reciever, but the more elegant solution would be to be able to fully integrate it in to the system, much like some of the whole house audio manufacturers do with iPod and iTunes. Anyone heard of doing anything like this?

Thanks for the feedback, folks. Been quite helpful. Using the ATV as my media hub is definitely an option that may work. I like the idea of using it instead of a computer which has to be left on all the time. I would still need a wall-keypad in each room to control the multi-zone amp (volume, source, etc) and then also use an iPod Touch w/ Remote app on it to control the ATV when ATV is the selected source. Not a perfect solution, but very, very good. And, substantially less cost than a media server from the whole-house audio manufacturer, especially since I already own the ATV!
That said, if there was a hack intot he ATV, that would be cool. I know it has a USB port on the back for "servicing and upgrade" use - whatever that means. I suspect that with the right hack, that port could be used to integrate in the control side of these whole-house audio systems. For example, one of the manufacturers makes an interface device that connects to a Mac computer via USB, and taps into iTunes making the Mac the media server and allowing their touchpad to control iTunes from anywhere in the house. This would be the ultimate solution for me if I wanted to buy another Mac computer. I was just hopeing to use the ATV instead. Again, even a Mac mini is way less money that their media server, so not a bad solution too.
Agaion, that's for the input!

  • How to use time capsule as media server on samsung tv

My time capsule is connected via lan with my samsung Series7.
The tv has a connectin to the internet via lan.
I want to stream movies from the time capsule directly via lan to the tv.
"All Share" doesn't see my time capsule.
Do I really have to install a server-software on time capsule?
    If yes, how?

There is no media server in the TC or available to load in the TC. The TV is probably needing DLNA streaming which Apple will not do.. since they use their own standard.
You have to have a player between the devices.. and not an Apple TV unless it has been JB.. because Apple places too many limitations on it. You cannot JB the latest ATV v3. So look at other products.. eg WDTV live.
Or many others that can play media files stored on the TC to the TV.
Or you need to use iPad or media computer to stream from itunes to the ATV plugged into the TV.. it does get complicated.

  • Using Arch as a media server

I plan to use Arch as a media server, for an Arch-based media center at my TV.
I don't want to deal with RAID, so I'm planning on running large single-partition disks to hold media, each with a slightly bigger disk for doing rsync incremental backups. For serving the media I'll be running openSSH and mounting the media volumes over SFTP from the media center.
I'll also be running a webserver on this machine. Someone suggested that I run the webserver on a virtual machine to segment it securely from my precious media.
Does all of this sound like a fine idea?

Going back to Slax's original post:
I would recommend using raid and/or lvm partitions on the server, they really aren't that hard to administer/setup and they offer you much easier scalability in terms of storage space.  I mean, you can grow an LVM volume (and then grow the fs partition on top of it) quite easily if you just stick another disk in the server.  But if you replace a disk on a physical harddrive's partition, you have to copy the contents of that entire partition to a hardrive on a newly partitioned hard-disk.
You can also shrink other lvm volumes to make room to grow a different volume (but then you have to be careful of the filesystem you use on top of the LVM volume, some filesystems, e.g. XFS can't be shrunk).  Raid can also potentially speed up disk access times, depending on the Raid level and/or CPU bottlenecks.  (Raid 4/5/6 all have a significant CPU overhead for parity calculations on write).
I would also point out that Samba/CIFS offers another way to share files over your network, which will also allow windows-running computers to access your files shares.  Also, Samba/CIFS has a reasonably easy to setup password-authenticated security model.  On the other hand, non-authenticated NFS is dead easy to setup, and securing NFS might not be harder than setting up Samba for any purpose.  Basically, I'd recommend Samba if you're interested in sharing in files between Windows-running computers and your server, otherwise NFS is probably a better choice.

  • Need help Using Time Capsule As Media Server

New time capsule owner was wondering if someone could help me set it where i can put all my digital media, Itunes, Dvd-rips on to the TC and use it as a Media Server.
    Thanks for your help fellas

You will need to run media server on a PC / Mac and use TC as NAS that stored your media files.

  • Windows Media Server Audio Stream

Is there a way to play a Windows Media Server Audio stream on
Adobe Flash Player embeded on a website?

Not that I've ever heard of... you'd have to get that audio
into some form that Flash supports (as either audio or
    video...)

  • Using a NAS as media server that can serve computeres and Apple TV directly

What is the best configuration (performance/price/robustness) to have one single scalable, “backupable” location to store videos and music that can act as a media server accessible by several mac and pc computers as well as several Apple TV within the same house (knowing that the Apple TV would access the location directly not going through a computer).

Not quite true. Apple TV can access NAS orginated stream if you share library. I have done this with GForce NAS. The problem is somwhere else. Sharing is limited to streaming music only at 128kbs. You can see all music on your NAS. NAS runs DAAP-MT server (linux based music streaming) for this which you likely need to enable manually (GForce NAS has this)
Another nasty limitation is that you cannot share stream movies from NAS.
That is the reason I have just bought Eee Box (PC with Win XP Home) and I hooked up number of USB drives with movies that I stream to Apple TV. This PC is very small and it takes very little power so, it can be placed in some corner (e.g. in kitchen when some appliances make noise anyway or in basement) and run 24x7. It will behave as NAS, but it will provide proper streaming of video (just install iTunes for PC on it). You do not need keyboard, mouse or monitor for this PC. I use Tight VNC to manage it remotely from one of my Mac computers... meaning Tight VNC service is run on Eee Box while Mac has built in VNC viewer that you can invoke from "Go to computer" window using following url:
    vnc://ipaddress_of_eeebox
(BTW Tight VNC does not need viewer on any mmachine as it has built-in web interface for screen management - you just need to use browser on port 5800)
To stream to Apple TV you need to enter those keys that are displayed by Apple TV. You do this via VNC.

  • How to connect to Akamai using RTMP SDK (Adobe Media Server Connector for C++)?

We need to stream live video to Akamai using RTMP. But, we are trying to connect using ADOBE RTMP SDK (Adobe Media Server Connector for C++ 2.0.1), but have no idea regarding how to connect to Akamai using the SDK. How to make the SDK respond to the server challenges for password etc. If this can't be done using the RTMP SDK, we can use plain C++ for the purpose. But for that too, we don't have any idea regarding the steps involved to make it work. If anyone has any idea on how to connect to Akamai using the RTMP SDK or using plain C++ (a sample code will be very helpful), please help us out. If you can suggest any C/C++/.NET library too which will help us achieve it, we are ready to do so. Thanks in advance.

    hi,
I am sorry I can not help you.  Could you do me a favor? I know you are using Adobe RTMP SDK.I want to know how to get it.
I tried to contact adobe at [email protected] but it seems to be an invalid email address.if you know efficient way,

  • Flash Media Server Stops Streaming

We are running Flash Media Server version 2.0.3 r68. Lately,
for some reason FMS will simply stop serving content. When this
happens, the FMS service is running and there is nothing in the
logs indicating anything out of the ordinary. The only way to fix
the problem is to stop and restart the FMS service. After doing
this, FMS will work fine for several days before failing in exactly
the same way. Anyone have ideas what's going on or what will fix
    this?

It seems a bit strange that this behavior started happening
"lately". Did you install some other piece of software or patch
recently? What is the load on the server? (cpu, connections,
    memory, etc..)
When you say it stops serving content, does this mean that
you are able to connect to the application instance, but just not
    able to play content?
If this behavior keeps happening capture the process state
while it is hung (use adplus -hang option on windows)

  • Using ATV as a media streamer

    what tricks specifically?
Well, if you want a list:-
    - plugins - to play iPlayer, and such like streaming video
    - connect additional storage either direct or LAN (photos, video etc)
    - play additional media types
Actually all of the above can be done with a hacked ATV, and I really like mine 'after' hacking it. BUT, having to switch interfaces from frontrow to 'the other one', tends to be annoying.
I have a PS3 sitting next to my ATV. Whilst on paper the PS3 is a better device for my needs for streaming media from the network, has the ability for users to easily put larger disk in it, etc. etc. I still use the ATV 99.9% of the time. Why, well
    - the interface is far better
    - it's silent in comparison
The PS3 wins against the 'stock' ATV in that
    - it picks up media from the network drives
    - DNLA i.e. if I shoot a couple of pictures on my camera it will connect wirelessly and display them from the camera, no need to fire up the iMac, import the photos to iPhoto etc.
    - plays streaming media
    - built in Blu-Ray drive.
A hacked ATV only 'looses' on the Blu-Ray drive. The ATV will do mostly everthing I want, just not out of the box in stock form.
Let's not forget that hacking the iPhone and then putting additional applications on it, was a huge boon for the iPhone, and then Apple kinda agreed with the masses in that additional apps wasn't such a bad idea after all. Problem here is that whilst sales of the iPhone went thru the roof, there is still only a relatively small user base of ATV users. But one can hope...

  • I use Telivo as a media server and have noticed that after installing mountain lion that my machine now sleeps as predicted in power settings after the allocated time. Any way I can stop my machine sleeping when streaming?

In previous versions of OS X I could use Telivo no problem and my machine would only go into sleep mode after I had finished watching a movie.

  • Use Mac Mini as media server

I am looking to switch out my old HTPC for a Mac Mini, but I would like to save as much money as possible and keep the options I have with my HTPC. Right now I have a 250GB system HDD and a 1TB data storage HDD. How does it work to use an external HDD as media storage that is served to another device (like a PS3) for viewing?

    Charles:
You can have your iPhote or Aperture libraries on the Mac Mini, and you can sync them with ypur iPhone. Notice that pictures taken from the iPhone are not added to your iPhoto or Aperture libraries unless you import them inside iPhoto or Aperture (the iPhone appears as a camera).
In iTunes you can choose wich iPhoto or Apertures events you want to copy (not sync, it is just a copy) to your iPhone. When you do that, a new Album will be added to your iPhone.

  • Please help, I want to use my TC as media server

I have a TC 1TB and I have three Macs at home, I want to copy all my music (iTunes), photos (iPhoto) and video on the TC and share it with all the Macs, and when some one add a photo, song or video the other can see it too, and don't have to duplicate the files, so how can I do it, specially with iTunes

    1) connect TC to your network and make sure you have no network problems
    2) use Disk Utility /Disks/File Sharing to set up the TC; check box share and wan and how you want others to share your TC
    3) use Finder preference to check box "show connected servers on desktop"
    4) use Finder GO command to connect to server
    5) in the blank window type afp://10.0.1.1 that is the ip address shown in Disk Utility for your local network...you could also connect over the internet using the ip address shown under Internet.
    6) once TC is mounted, copy your files to it ; do not use TC as your sole backup.
    7) launch itunes and use the "add to library" command; this points itunes to the source of the files
    8) just make sure you mount the TC before launching itunes each time.
    9) only one Mac is going to stream files from that TC at a time.

  • A question on using Cairngorm with flash media server

    Hi,
I want to use the data from a remote sharedobject on FMS with cairngorm framework.
Where should I put the service (connection) to the FMS?
It seems not possible to put it into ServiceLocator.
This service is quite different from the service of HTTPService, RemoteObjects and WebService.
It needs a listener to the SyncEvent while the other 3 do not.
Pls give some hints on how to do this.
    Thx a lot.

The IP camera would need to have an embedded RTMP publishing client. I don't know of any IP cameras that have such support, but I suppose it couldn't hurt to check with the manufacturer of the camera to find out if it can be done.

  • Settings for Nexio Media Server for export from Premiere?

Currently I am running all my material through media encoder and then sending it back out into compressor so that it makes a proper file that my Nexio Broadcast Media Sever can read properly. Does anyone have experience exporting from premiere to the nexio settings directly? I am attempting to save a step and time by not having to export it twice for one file. Thanks!

    Hi-
I was just curious how you made out with your P2P Webchat application - ie. performance, audio, etc...
We are currently developing a Video Chat application for our service and are wondering if we should stay with the Adobe Media Sever and use RTMP or use the enterprise server with RTMFP?  We are having some issues with audio echo and delay with the RTMP solution so far.
    Thank you

  • Can i store my music on my device without using my data in my phone plan streaming from the cloud? How do i put what I want on there without waiting for each song to download from the cloud one at a time?

How can I store the music I listen to on my iphone without streaming it from the cloud and using all my data on my phone plans?  How do I dump it on my phone all at once in itunes rather than waiting for each song to download individually from the cloud?

What??  You asked how to get all your music on your phone at once rather than downloading it to your phone from iCloud.
Go to your purchased list in iTunes and download all your music to your iTunes library, as explained in the linked article.  Then sync it all to your phone using iTunes you're done.  The music will be stored locally on your phone and you won't have to download it again in the future.
