Using Automator for software updates

Hi all. I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered numerous times; I did several searches using different terms and did not find my answer.
Can I use Automator to do all my software updates completely automatically? Including doing the restarts? I know this is a very basic question for most all of you; I can use my computer but really don't know a lot about using it to the max. I would like to be able to have all the software updates done during the night, while the computer is unattended.
Thanks.

If you are not too keen on running those commands you might want to try http://www.igetter.net/iGetter.html This download manager seems to allow the scheduled downloading that you need. I think you would have to go to the Apple site and find the url for the standalone updaters to find the link after Software Update identifies them. Then use this program to schedule the downloads. Sometimes those seem more stable anyway.
The program us shareware. It appears from the description that the program remains fully functional but puts up a nag screen if the program has not been registered.

Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now.

  • Multiple CatalogURL's for Software Updates

I am using Workgroup Manager to set the CatalogURL for software updates.  Can I set multiple url's for software updates so if one address is not reachable the client will look for the next URL?

Ah yes...  Okay.  What you could do as a non-automated solution when you can't get a hold of the corporate server...
    In Terminal:
    sudo defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
Take note of the catalogURL.  It should be on the first line and will start with http://
Once you've written down EXACTLY what the URL is...
    sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
This will eliminate the reference to the software update server you have set up and default back to apple's server.
If you want to get things back to the way they were, you need to write the defaults back.
    Like this:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL ***URL GOES HERE***

  • I have three iPhone 4 models purchased in late 2010 that all share the same iTunes account (apps, music, etc), but I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones. What is the best solution to manage these devices for software updates, apps?

I have three iPhone 4 models purchased in late 2010 (for my family) that all share the same iTunes account for access to apps and music, but each phone/user still has his/her custom contact list, email accts, and select lists of apps and music from the one iTunes acct library.  The problem is I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct. What is the best solution to manage these devices for software updates, apps? This is probably a common problem with families wanting to share apps and music without realizing the issues created by this approach. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates. The problem would be how to keep all the apps, etc from being deleted off the second and third phones that were originally loaded from the one iTunes acct. Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. Hopefully, someone out there can help me??  Please?

how can i get ios 7 in my ipad 2? i have tried to update it but in my setting>general there is no icon for software update.so help me please!

If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

  • New board for Software Updates - read this first!

    Dear Nokia Support Discussions members,
we are happy to introduce this new section for discussing Nokia phone software updates with your PC or over-the-air.
Please use this board to discuss
    - Nokia Software Updater PC application or over-the-air updates
    - latest software versions for each product
    - any changes you notice over previous software versions
    - making a back-up of your phone data
    - problems you may encounter with the update
    etc.
First and foremost, Nokia Support Discussions is a meeting place for Nokia product owners. Here you can discuss Nokia products, ask for assistance and help other people by providing solutions. Nokia Moderators are here mainly to give assistance in using the boards and to keep the discussions on track.
However, these boards are also a feedback channel to Nokia and people from many different Nokia departments actively follow these discussions. Constructive feedback and criticism is valued and always welcome.
We at Nokia Support Discussions do not have any information about when new products are added to the update service - nor do Nokia contact centers. So you just need to keep checking the service webpage or the boards here. I am sure new products are announced here by our alert members within minutes after they have been added.
I wish to remind the community that posting any confidential information about Nokia product software versions will be deleted and may result in a permanent ban without warning.
Below is the introductory letter that we received from the Nokia Software Update Team - please read it for important information about new products and their schedule.
    See you on the boards,
vandelay & Nokia Support Discussions Team
The Nokia Software Updater is a Windows application that enables you to update Nokia mobile device software (firmware) over the Internet using your PC. The application can be downloaded from the Nokia UK Product Support Internet pages at
    www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate
The Nokia Software Updater offers the same updates you would receive at a Nokia Service Centre. The added advantage is the convenience, as you can now easily perform the update yourself from any location with an Internet connection, at a time suitable for you. Keep your phone software up-to-date, or fix a potential operation problem you may have by regularly updating your phone firmware.
In the future, every new S60 product will be compatible with the Nokia Software Updater, but at the moment the application is only available for selected Nokia devices including Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia N70 and Nokia N72. During the autumn, the application will be available in different languages on different web pages and many other products will also be available for software updates.
The Nokia Software Updater has been made to be as customer-friendly as possible. All you need is a PC and the standard sales-pack data cable - no dongles, no adaptors, no fuss. A typical update takes around 30 minutes. Plus, you don’t need to wait for your device to be returned from Nokia Service Centre.
    Regards,
    Nokia Software Update Team

Unless you set the device up for Wifi Sync, you will have to upgrade using iTunes.  On the Summary page in iTunes, click the button Software Update.

My mac mini is running slow.  Bought it in 2009.  Activity monitor shows nothing running that should not be.  Someone suggested it might be my operating system?  Check for software updates, and I am current.  Suggestions?

Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utilty by highlighting the Drive & looking at the bottom of the window.

If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • Getting an error message that unable to check for software update when trying to download new iOS 8.0.2 update ?? Can someone help ???

Getting an error message of unable to
check for software update when trying to update to
ios 8.0.2. Can someone help ??

    Howdy there otss1979,
It sounds like you are unable to download the iOS 8.0.2 update either, over the air, or using iTunes. If you are updating the software on your phone in Settings > General > software update I would recommend starting with this article:
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update
If you are using iTunes, I would use this article instead:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
If you are getting a specific error number, the following article will help you get that resolved:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
If this does not resolve the issue, could you please write the error message you are getting word for word for me?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • When I ran the bootcamp assistance for software update I get an error that it can't download from the server

Install Mac OS X lion fine without any issue
I'm trying to dual boot Lion and Wind 7 on different HD but when I ran the bootcamp assistance for software update I get an error that it can't download from the server.
I also try without downloading the software and do the installation but it fail. It seem that this bootcamp is giving problem so I revert back to SN leopard and it does the same. Why can't the bootcamp assistance update the software, is it something that I did wrong or my system is not supporting dual booting.
    Here is my spec
Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66
    Identifiers: Mac Pro - MA356LL/A - MacPro1,1* - A1186

MacPro1,1 has EFI32 and does not support Windows 7 very well, can't boot 64-bit, can't use all your RAM.
There have always been trouble and issues, ways around those, but a big PITA too.
    Select CD-ROM Boot
    Select CD-ROM Boot Error Apple
Nothing to do with Lion actually. Other than downloading drivers from Apple servers has been mostly hit or miss, with miss being 90%.
I have rebuned the DVD (make a new ISO image using Imgburn etc) but now I just install Windows on PC then move the drive to the Mac. A lot easier.
Without 64-bit you can't use more than 1.9GB RAM. And you need Windows 7 Pro to use both processors.

  • Preparing iPhone for software update???

I just updated iTunes and tried syncing my iPhone. I then downloaded the new iPhone software update and it went to "preparing iPhone for software update." It's been like this for an hour now, and I can't do anything. I can't even close iTunes. Has this happened to anyone? How long did it take your phone to prepare for "software update"? What should I do? Help....

Spent 93 minutes on the phone with support. Could not solve the problem of getting out of the restore loop. As a last resort they said to use another computer to restore the iPhone. Went to my iMac and it worked, but back on my G4 I still can't sync to iTunes, Doesn't even open up when I plug in the phone!
And all my data was lost during the restore. Lot of people out there with this problem!!! hope theyn come up with a fix soon,

  • Is there an Apple article on a secure way to check for software updates (OS 10.6x)?

I recently heard about malware that can be introduced by downloading an innocent-looking software update, e.g., Adobe Acrobat or Flashplayer.  I'd like to set all my programs either to update manually or to automatically let me know that an update is available but not download (e.g., in Microsoft Office).
OS 10.6 has always notified me automatically and asked me if I wanted to install. I'd like to put a "brake" on my tendency to just click "Install," so I looked for software update preferences, but couldn't find them.  Can anyone point me to an Apple article that tells me how to do this?  Thanks!

If you are simply referring to Apple software updates then it will depend on the OS you are using.   For example, there will be no more updates for 10.6.8 Snow Leopard than what is revealed by you clicking 'software update' ... unless some mind blowing security matter arises.   You need to be able to choose once you get to Yosemite and that is where Eric's suggestion of the forums is so relevant.   The newest OS tends to have its early updates fairly regularly as the public at large find its faults.   As I understand it, there are some who doubt 10.6.3 sufficiently to discourage me, if I used that OS.
And I have to agree with Bob.   Too many rogue companys can trick you into downloading basically decent software but having injected malware before you get it.   SOFTONIC, DOWNLITE, MACPAW ZEOBIT and anything UTORRENT are to avoid.
