Using Automator to AutomaConnect iMac on Network for Backup to Time Capsule

My wife uses her new 2.66 GHz iMac (10.5.2) for e-mail via dial-up. She has airport capability in iMac and we have an Airport network that I use. I am ready to add Time Capsule this weekend. I want to be able to have Time Machine back up her computer to TC at night when she is not using it. I plan to use it to back up my MB Pro also.
Here's what I would like to do. Automatically disconnect her modem connection at, say 2 AM, then turn Airport on (in her iMac), let Time Machine back up to TC. After a couple of hours, shut down Airport and reconnect her dial-up connection. Is this possible with TC and Time machine using Automator?

Thanks, Guru, but the problem is that the dial-up e-mail on the iMac will not work with airport on. So, my wife leaves airport off most of the time. I believe the e-mail client tries to connect to the dial-up isp through airport and gets no connection when airport is on.

  • Using Airport Express as separate wifi network vs extender with Time Capsule?

Hello all.  I recently converted my home computer network from Windows/PC based to an iMac with Time Capsule.  On my previous setup, I had a Cisco/Linksys router with wifi, and I also had two Airport Expresses in separate areas of the house where the Linksys had a weak signal.  Obviously, I had the Airport Expresses set up as "separate" wifi networks, as they could not be used as network extenders with the Linksys.  This setup seemed to work really good, as the 3 wifi networks provided good blanket coverage in all parts of the house.  Each network also seemed to "hand-off" to the other pretty well, meaning that Airport Express 1 would show as the active network when you moved far enough away from the Linksys (or insert any of the network names here, even though I'm pretty sure that the device accessing the network has more to do with this than the networks themselves).  In particular, the speeds that I got from the Airport Expresses actually eclipsed the speeds that I would get from the Linksys wifi.
My issue is that after I converted everything, I left the Airport Expresses as "separate networks" and essentially removed the Linksys/Cisco router and replaced it with the Time Capsule.  So I still have 3 separate wifi networks, just like before, with the Time Capsule network taking the place of the Linksys wifi network.  While the Linksys and the Airport Expresses seemed to co-exist together nicely, I get the feeling that the TC and the AEs are somehow working against each other or at least competing with each other for bandwidth.  For example, if I have my iPhone right beside my iMac and TC, and I run a speed test on the iPhone using the TC wifi network, I get download and upload speeds in the range that I am expecting (30-40 mbps download).  However, when I walk down the hallway to the other end of the house, the TC tends to remain the dominant wifi network, even when I am in the same room with one of the AEs (this is where they used to "hand off" nicely between networks).  When you run a speed test in this location still on the TC wifi, the speed drops down to 5-7 mbps, and worse, I believe the signal becomes inconsistent because webpages and data often seem to be freezing in the middle of downloading.  I understand that the distance from the TC is causing this, because my solution has been to manually switch from the TC to the closest AE, and that fixes the issue.  Run a speed test after I manually switch to the closest AE when I am in the same room as an AE, and the speeds pop back up to 30-40 mbps.
My question is this:  would switching the AEs to "extenders" of the TC wifi network help this issue?  Honestly, my laziness was one reason that I did not do this when I setup the TC initially, because I have several devices that access the AE wifi networks that I'd have to update with the new network name and password.  Everything was working great before, and I just didn't want to upset the apple cart.  But if I have created an unfriendly environment between the TC and the two AEs, I certainly have no problem making the change now.  I just wasn't sure if making this change would fix my problem or not.  I know it's a mundane thing, but I'd like to be able to roam the house without continuously having to manually switch between wifi networks to get a consistent signal.
Sorry if this is a simple issue.  I am admittedly a newbie with the TC and its interaction with the AEs.
    Thanks in advance!!

It is not a simple issue.
Exactly which method works best is going to take some experimentation.
The way you are trying to set it up as a roaming network is generally considered the best.. but the devices like iphones do not hand off neatly.
It is interesting that they in fact used to hand off better using the Linksys.. which could be due to its poorer range. The new TC having so much better range is causing the phones to not swap "towers" to the local express.
Test it with a Mac laptop.. as generally they do hand off better.
I cannot quite figure out if you are using roaming correctly. All the wireless should have identical names, with identical security setting and passwords.
The only thing that should be different is wireless channels on each item. And you are likely just using auto anyway.
So each device is creating a wireless network. And for 2.4ghz one should be channel 1, then another channel 6 and another channel 11. For 5ghz it will be same idea but there are more channels available.
When you extend wireless, everything runs the same channel. But the wireless speed is reduced. You must disconnect ethernet to each of the expresses.. and the problem is your 30-40mbps will reduce permanently to 15-20mbps for all clients. So take your choice.. 15-20mbps for all clients forced to double hop is better than 5-7mbps which you experience now when you walk around.. although I am not sure how much browsing you do whilst walking. You may need to compromise which is the better out of several not great alternatives.
I would have a test.. which is wrong btw.. but I have heard that it works.
In your roaming network at the present time. Try setting each router to a manual wireless channel.. and fix all of them the same. So for instance, set 2.4ghz to channel 11. Try fixing the 5ghz as well, say the TC is defaulting to 149, it might not actually respond to manual wireless channels.. you will need to test this.. say set to 36 or 40 and see if the TC is actually changed.. if not just set all the expresses to 149 as well. What you are doing is trying to reinforce the wireless in each area.. but this is actually wrong. So all will have same wireless name and same security wpa2 personal is the only valid one.. and all the same password.
Test with a few clients and see if the results give you decent local speeds as well as better roaming.. once you decide which to do, then you will need to change all the clients.

  • Thunderbolt Adapter and USB for Backups to Time Capsule?

    Hi,
Would there be any [speed] benefit in using the Thunderbolt port on my iMac (and MacBook Ar ) with the appropriate adapter to backup my devices to a Time Capsule, rather than just the network port, please?
I appreciate it would probably be better with my MBA over a wireless network, but the TB port doesn't seem to work :-(
    Thank you.

Besides additional monitors, ThunderBolt is also for having high speed access to data. In order to do that the storage can't be just plain disk drives. They are so slow that many other bus structures can be used for them. In order to get the full functionality of ThunderBolt you must use things such as RAID Arrays that are able to move data faster.
For backup there is no really little or no need for speed and in fact the expenses involved in the high speed access would just be wasted on backup. It is really working with the data what that expensive is worth while considering.

  • Very long time preparing for backup to Time Capsule

    Hi folks,
Long time reader, first time posting a question. I got my new Time Capsule and set it up yesterday as my wireless router and backup system for two computers-a new iMac running 10.5.2 and an older MacBook laptop (~ 2 yrs old) also running 10.5.2. The wireless networking worked fine, I was able to print, and the full backup of the iMac worked. It's even done several incremental ones today, and I'm able to access the backups using Time Machine. So far, so good, BUT the laptop is still "preparing" the backup- more than ten hours later! I've got it in the same room as the Time Capsule, hooked up via an ethernet cable right now. It's not a particularly big hard drive (~75 Gb, about half used). What gives? Should I start over and, if so, what can I do to get it past the preparing stage?
    Marca

If you double-click on your time capsule icon in the Finder and open the folder therein, you should see a file
called something like "computername_xxxx.sparsebundle. If your first attempt to backup that computer failed
(as mine did) and then you fixed the problem and tried again, the second attempt at backup may also fail if you don't remove that sparsebundle file. The second backup attempt should then work and a good sparsebundle file will be recreated.
It's been a few weeks now, and my Time Capsule seems to be working fine-backing up both my computers. I'm also able to access and retrieve files from the backups. What I learned from this setup attempt is 1) fix your permissions before trying the initial backup and 2) do your first backup via an ethernet connection, subsequent backups can then be done wirelessly.
Hope that's "ladybird book" enough for you-not sure what that means here on the other side of the pond! It's sounds intriguing though.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • Help?  I keep getting "Unexpected Error" everytime I try to use my new Airport Express to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule.

I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error.  Try again".  The Express is still flashing Amber.  I cannot get it to turn green.  What am I doing wrong here?  Please help me.

Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
Power off and restart the Time Capsule
Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible.
Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend.

    Hello,
Are they just regular size eMails?
Do you have more than one eMail account setup?
    Next time it happens, get...

  • Some of these services may be being used for hacking my Time Capsule?

    Hi,
I was scanning services from a connected PC on my network but not directely in my time capsule and I picked these services below:
    NetBIOS Session Services
    SMB directy over IP
    AFP over TCP
    Apple Airport WAP Administration
SecureNet Pro Sensor https management server or apple airport admin
My question is: Some of these services may be being used for hacking my Time Capsule?
Attached SIMPLE DESIGN FROM MY HOME NETWORK,

Ok the TC did seem to get the raw end of the deal.. (I am not sure what the other end is.. cooked maybe??)
What model is it.. Gen1 or Gen2 are very prone to issue of overheat and eventual power supply failure.
See internet for loads of info on the issue.
    Here is my version.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
You can open the TC and remove the disk.. if it is still operational you can get your files.. Gen1 Hitachi drives are still going strong.. it is the power supply that goes.
    Gen3 is a different issue..
Tell us your model number from the rubber foot label.. A1xxx??
Decide if repair is worthwhile.. with a bit of DIY a repair or replacement to the power supply can be made.
There is no space in the TC for dual drives.
And if the power supply goes anyway there is no recovery apart from pulling it apart.

  • Use Network ready printer with Time Capsule?

Recently bought a laser all in one Canon printer that was network ready. Canon tech support told me it would not be compatible with Time Capsule (500 GB) as the wireless source. Is this true?
If true, what printer brands will network easily with the Time Capsule?
    Thank you!
    In search of new printer

    Welcome to the discussions!
If the all-in-one is "network ready", it will have an ethernet port to connect to the network. It will need to connect by ethernet if you want to be able to use the scan, fax, copy, etc functions.
If you are planning to connect the all-in-one to the Time Capsule USB port, the printing function will work if the device is compatible. The other functions will not be supported.

  • HT201250 How to backup the Time Capsule to an external drive using Time Machine?

Most of my data is on my Time Capsule since the hard drive on my iMac is too small for my music/movies/pictures and also so multiple devices can wirelessly access the data. I want to back up the files from my iMac and the Time Capsule on an external hard drive using the Time Machine. However, it seems that the Time Machine ignores the Time Capsule as a data source. How can I get this to work?

No, I don't believe this solves your problem.
TIme Machine can be used with a Time Capsule as a backup solution from connected macs and their drives but not from network drives, NAS or Time Capsules.
Thus, if you store files for LAN access on a TC internal drive, and want to back them to the USB/external drive attached to that TC, you cannot use Time Machine to do so.
Time Machine has not way of backing up ANY Time Capsule or NAS or WInPC or other networked drive, as far as I can tell. You will have to use some other backup software.
This is exactly what I bought the TC for myself (tried to use the internal drive on the TC as a NAS for my LAN, storing my music and photos and documents and bought a LaCie 2TB USB3 extneral drive to connect to the TC and hoped to be able to use Time Machine to backup the internal drive to the LaCie drive....but this does not work, as TM cannot backup from a network drive or TC device.
