Using Automator to cut up a video

Hello,
I've been trying to use automator to do some repetitive tasks for me, but I seem to keep running into brick walls since I've not really used it before.
What I'm trying to do is cut a video file into single frames, and save each one as a jpeg. I know it's possible to do this is Photoshop by importing the video, and making each frame a different layer, then exporting each layer as a file. Problem is this is limited to do only the first 400 frames of your video.
So far I've made it so automator goes in to photoshop, move to the next frame, save that frame as a jpeg.
Here's where I run into trouble. I want it to rename each file as it's created automatically so it goes file00001, file00002 and so on and then loop back around so it does the whole video while I go off and made myself a sandwich or something.
Could anyone possibly help me?

There are two ways to do this in iMovie 09
1) Use Chapter Markers
2) In the Project Library View, select the project and then click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Do this as for as many copies as you need. Then to create a shorter portion, delete the clips you do not need for that portion.
If you are open to using another application, you can Share your movie in iMovie. Then use QuickTime Pro ($30) or MPEG Streamclip (free) to split the movie.

Using Automator to create a "video server"

I'm looking to turn an Xserve into a video server for a digital signage situation. I know I can use Automator to open a video file in Quicktime and automatically play it full screen, however, is it possible to do the following with automator (or in some other easy fashion):
1. Have it go into a designated folder and open up the video file in that folder no matter what the files name is. (So I can update the video content monthly and just copy the new file into the folder and not have to change anything in the Automator script. I could always give the file the exact same name every month, but it would be nice if I didn't have to.).
2. Automatically run the Automator script on system boot - so we can boot up the Xserve in the morning with 1 button and once the OS is up it automatically starts playing the video file.
3. Last, (and this is probably the hard one), any thoughts on a way I can get the server to play a file to its end, and then check and see if there is a newer file present before looping? If not, it continues looping the same file, if so, it begins looping the new file instead? I'm guessing this would be more of an Applescript thing than Automater? This would be for a "content update while playing" situation.
I may not even mess with number 3, but the first two are a must. I'm not asking that you take time to develop working code for all the above, just letting me know that I can do it and whether I should be looking at Automater or Applescript for certain functionality would be fine and I can further research from there.

1. In the Finder actions you will need:
- Get Specified Finder Items, and point it towards the folder that will contain the movie.
- Get Folder Contents - to get what's inside the folder.
- Filter Finder Items - set to filter by 'Name Extension' 'Is equal to' 'mov' and make sure all your video files have the right extension...
- Open Finder Items - in QT Player - note that this might cause problems if there are multiple files in the folder...
Then from the QT Player actions:
- Play Movies.
2. Save As... Application, then after saving, drag the app into the login items for the user account.
3. That's going to need some AppleScript, but this thread should get you started:

Copying a video from Youtube to use in Final Cut Pro

I have an old final cut pro that I us for charities and non-profits I think it is version 5.1.7. I have never had the money to upgrade and now I do not have any disk or material for the program, only what is on my system. Now the question. I have a charity that has ask me to pull a video off of Youtube that they cannot find the original. What is the best way to copy the video from Youtube and download it to my desktop and get the best quality to use in final cut pro. Thanks for your help.

Just use OSX:
Command - Shift - 3 will take a full screen snapshot
Command - Shift - 4 will let you draw a rectangle around the portion of screen you want to copy
Command - Control - Shift - 3 will copy the full screen to the clipboard (to be pasted in another app)
Command - Control - Shift - 4 will copy a selectable portion of the screen to the clipboard
Preview is set up to receive clipboard images — just select New from Clipboard from the File menu (or command - N). You can then export in a variety of formats.
Most browsers let you right click on an image and select Save Image As... to any location on your hard drive.

Using Final Cut Express for video editing without attaching external device

Hello,
I am a newbie to Final Cut Express as well as Mac's in general. I am wanting to use Final Cut Express for video editing of files, but without an attached camera. Is there any way to have Final Cut Express startup without having it prompt for an external A/V device? I just want to do some basic editing and use the chroma key feature. Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, I've tried that and I get into an issue that was addressed in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=836595&tstart=120 where FCE will show the splash screen and then the program doesn't start. I then have to delete FCE preferences and then I will get the Easy Setup dialog box prompt me again for choosing the external device.
I am looking for a way to use FCE for video editing of files that I already have on my computer that I created using iClone software and is in .avi, or .mp4 format. I get FCE to work one time without the external device actually being attached, but then when restarting the program I get the dialog box asking for the external device and if it's not there, the program just closes, and to get it to work again, I have to delete the preference files and go through the process all over again which is time consuming especially when this is at work. If FCE is not the right program, can anyone suggest a good video editing program that doesn't require an external device and is as good or better than FCE?

When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

Is it possible for a mac to recognise a camcorder as a video input without using imovie/final cut?

Is it possible for a mac to recognise a camcorder as a video input without using imovie/final cut, I use web based video capture software and need an HD input that the mac would recognise as if it were a webcam?

Can I use the Final Cut Studio Audio Library in a Monetized Youtube Video?

Hi All!
I would like to use some of the sound effects (Explosions, etc.) and a few musical loops (of a trumpet) within a soundscape in a monetized youtube video. Do I have the rights to use these sounds?
How would I fight a copyright claim if one arose?

Apple grants you the rights to use audio clips in their library as long as you do not sell the clips alone. That is, you can use an explostion sound in a video as an effect but you can not market the explosion sound effect alone.
Information regarding licensing an allowed use of Apple Loops in FCP used to be located in the ProApps area of the EULA web pages. It appears to be gone now that FCP is discontinued.

Now, I want to input the tips into a MySQL database with an insert statement like:

Are you familliar with regular expressions? If you are, then you can create a shell script and incorporate it into your workflow. Or you could use bbedit or textwrangler from barebones.com to search and replace in multiple files.

Using Automator to create a text box of certain size

I'm very new to using automator... in fact I haven't used it at all, but I am wondering if I can use it to create a text box of the same size each type to type in within preview (a PDF document). Basically I want to click or push something and have a text box be generated that is the same size each time.

Using Automator in place of Tether

+I posted this in another topic in reply to a question, but since I get asked this a lot I figured I'd give it a unique post.+
So, if you were one of the many hoping Apple would add the ability to shoot tethered directly from within Aperture, only to discover the newly added feature left your shiny new Canon SLR out in the cold, here's how to more or less achieve the same thing using Automator and the Canon software:
Using Automator to accomplish the task is pretty simple. You'll of course need to use Canon's EOS Utility software to do the remote capture. It's better than Aperture anyway, since it'll actually let you change the settings on the camera remotely as well (Aperture simply lets you click the shutter).
Once you have the Canon software set up and running, you'll choose a folder to capture the photos to. This can be any folder you like, named anything you like. Within Aperture, create a new project or use and existing project. Do the following:
1. Open Automator
2. Choose a "Custom" workflow
3. You can narrow the action list down by choosing "Photos" under library, and then find the Aperture Icon with "Import Photos" and drag it to the area on the right.
4. Choose your project from the drop down menu, then select "Import by reference" if you want Aperture to leave the photos where they are and just reference them. Leave it unchecked if you want them imported to the Aperture library. You can also choose to have them deleted after the import if you'd like.
5. Once you've set up the action with your project and import preferences, go to the file menu and choose "Save as Plug In." Name the action "Tether" or another appropriate name.
6. In the first drop down menu choose "Folder Action"
7. In the second drop down menu choose the folder where you have your Canon captured shots going and click "save".
That's it! Now every time you take a photo using the Canon software, the photos will automatically be imported to the project of your choosing. Good luck!

I was advising a friend to budget $1000 for a suitable tethered camera along with Aperture2, & more ram.
I had previously used a video camera to take a snap of a product that he wanted sent via email to a web host on a daily basis. It worked when using iMovie and saving frames.
As of yesterday, I became familiar with Automator, set up an action that should do the trick anddon't have to use iMovie.
I do have Adobe Acrobat Pro for making pdf's so I can output in that format, however, will Leopard also output as a pdf without acrobat Pro?

Using Automator to "cat" files

Hi all-
I was wondering if someone could help me with an Automator workflow. I've never used Automator... but I'm pretty sure it can do what I'm looking for.
I need it to "cat" .MTS (AVCHD) files for me. I'd like it to order them alphabetically, then cat and output to a single file.
Is this possible?

Yea, I figured out that much. My end goal is to take two .MTS (video) files and drop them onto an automator app and have it cat the files. I just don't know how to get there.
I'm not good with scripting, and I've never written an Applescirpt, but I know I'm missing something here. Just having the "cat" command in the "Run Shell Script" action isn't working. I'm thinking I have to specify somehow for it to "use the two files I just gave you and run the cat command on them, then output".
Does that make sense?
Here is what I have so far in Automator:
1. App recieves files or folders as input
2. Sort Finder Items
     -by Name in Ascending order
3. Run Shell Script
     -cat
4. Move Finder Items
     -to Desktop.

How doI Import HD clips from HTC Desire HD for use in Final Cut Express?

Before anyone says it I know it's dead easy with and iPhone but how difficult is it to import video from the HTC Desire HD to use with Final Cut Express? I am looking at purchasing this phone and would be interested in people's thoughts.

Pleased to make your acquaintance, having recently used your FCE4 editing workshop as a bible I'd like to thank you for making an understandable read! Re my comments: This was early days with the application and I have a lot of work to catch up on before I get to work with it properly. In a test I set it up using the 720p25 apple intermediate codec and it needed rendering. the phone uses 3gp to record. I haven't gone into any detail with it yet, still busy trying to migrate from windows mid project from adobe premiere before even attempting to provide any focus to my camera on my phone. I will report back when I get there if anyone is interested!
