Using a Shotgun Mic with Garage Band

I have Garage Band 09 on my MacBook Pro. I have a USB microphone that works great when I plug in into the laptop to record dialogue, etc.
What I'm trying to do now is use a Rode Video Mic plugged into the laptop and record dialogue with Garage Band. I have the Griffin iMic USB adapter that accepts the 3.5 plug from the Rode mic and then plugs into the USB port of the laptop. After making sure in my preferences that the iMic is chosen, I can only get a whisper of sound recording into Garage Band. I've tried the different settings on the Rode mic and looked through everything I can think of in the Garage Band preferences and can't get it to record strong, clear sound. I'm aware that a pre-amp mixer probably would do the trick, but I'm trying to find an economical version for now.
Does anyone have any advice on why I can only get a super quiet recording with this Rode shotgun mic?

Yes, there's the Mic or Line switch on the iMic and it has to be set on the Mic setting when using the external microphone.
I've been playing with the set up again and it's possible I may have found the problem. I was looking at the Recording Level in the control section of Garage Band and adjusted the recording level up. Now I'm getting a good strong recording. I feel foolish to think it may have been something so simple and relating to "operator error."
If anyone has any other suggestions or thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

ALERT: Do not use Ae or Pr with Garage Band open!

This was driving me insane all week.
I was creating scores with Garage Band.
And Pr and Ae were playing back audio & timelines AT THE WRONG SPEED.
As I was on the phone with tech support, I realized this was caused by Garage Band being open!
As soon as I quit it, CC went back to normal.
Anyone who uses GB -- let's please file bug reports.

I remember having similar issues setting up audio workstation DAW's for Slave/ReWire. Sounds like GarageBand took control of your Audio Card and set it to a different "Sample Rate" which would speed or slow the audio being used in other apps.
Sounds like you'll have to use GB either before or after Ae/Pr to prevent this... or figure a way to set your sample rates to match.

Midi in using Alesis IO Doc for Garage Band

I have audio in GB on iPad2 and the Alesis IO dock and would like to use the midi in to at least start and stop my song. Will GB understand a midi clock in? If so how can it be told to recognize it. I'm told it supports core midi but it wont do midi out for instance so what does "support" core midi mean? Will it do midi in? Can someone suggest an app that will play a stereo audio file and let me use either midi in or out on the Alesis IO Dock to synch midi clock to my outboard synths?

Yes. There are a ton of write-ups on how to do the connections. I connect my m-audio Keystation 61 es through the CCK to my iPad and use GarageBand to control it. Some keyboards require a powered USB hub to make things work. I use a belkin 4 port hub in my own setup. Ah ok, I have a better idea of what you want to do now.
Unfortunately there isn't anything inside GB that can come anywhere close to Acoustica Beatcraft, but there are two tools inside Garageband that can help you do something similar.
First are the built-in keyboards, which will enable you to trigger drum samples with your computer keyboard or mouse. Go to Window -> Keyboard or Window -> Musical Typing. Click with your mouse on the Keyboard or press keys on your computer keyboard with Musical Typing, and you will trigger different drum samples for whatever kit you've chosen for that software track.
Next is the Track Editor: in Piano Roll mode, you can create and see midi notes somewhat similar to the view in this screenshot from AB. On the left side of the Editor, you will see a sideways piano keyboard. When you assign a drum kit to a software track, each of the piano keys corresponds to a different instrument: hi hat, snare, bass drum, etc---you'll have to play them using the on-screen keyboard or musical typing to see what they correspond to. In order to add a MIDI note you hold the CMD button and click with the mouse.
So, if you wanted to add a closed hi-hat hit, you would CMD-click on the Track Editor row corresponding to the closed hi-hat piano key, and then you can drag the MIDI note left & right to change the beat it plays on, or resize the note, which will change its duration.
Or, as you've already observed, you can use Musical Typing to play out a pattern on your computer keyboard while recording, and you will see the midi notes appear in real time in the Track Editor.

Minimum Processor for Garage Band 3

Hello Happy New Year!
I have a G5 1.8 that I use as my main computer, and use Final Cut, and Garage Band a lot of the time.
I also have a small sound studio in my basement, and would like to get another back-up computer to also use Garage Band, and Pro Tools.
The Apple minumum requirement for the installation of iLife 06 is a Power Mac G4 733 Mhz processor.
With this information, I'm leaning toward buying an 800 mhz, 933mhz, or even 1 Gig mhz Power Mac G4. Do you guys think I should shoot for no less than a 1 Gig Processor to be on the safe side? I'm also trying to safe a little money too.

Yes well, I'd like to use the 2nd computer (with Garage Band), to record voice-overs. Say about 10-15 minutes of dialogue at any one time on a single Garage Band track. I don't intend to do any multi-tracking musical scores, but definitely some voice-overs.
What do you think:
Say at least a 1 Gig Processor, and 1 Gig Minimum Ram?

Yes, it definitely works with Leopard's Mail 3.0.
It definitely also works better than Tiger's junk mail protection. As I switched over to it about 6 months ago, I cannot say if Leopard has improved their junk mail protection.
You can try it out before buying for $30 at http://c-command.com/spamsieve/.
It can use Growl notification too, but I am pretty sure Growl and Mail 3.0 don't work together yet.
SpamSieve has an icon that sits on the dock. If you don't like it there, read the help page for SpamSieve, and it will tell you how to turn it off.
There is this British site that does these like instructional Mac videos. You have to be a subscriber to the site to see some of them, but they have one on SpamSieve if you didn't want to install it to see what it is like.

Getting Yamaha MM^ Voices to work in Garage band.

Goal to Use Yamaha mm6 voices in Garage Band.
I have downloaded the yamaha drivers and I can use the Yamaha to use the garage band voices in recording but I have no clue on how to get the YAmaha voice to record in Garage. I have called Yamaha support and they feel its about finding out how Garage band accepts MSB / LSB / Midi info --- and where to put that in garage band.

Recording a live band through Garage Band

How do I record a live band (my own) using an iBook G4 with Garage Band 2.0.2?

I too am trying to record a live band, but in Garageband 3. I want to record multiple tracks. Not sure how or if I can record more than one track at a time using what I have, which is an 8 channel mixer and an i mic (simple rca to usb interface). Do I need to buy one of these fancier interfaces?

Short answer:
Click Hide Song(s), it is what you wanted to do...
Long answer:
iTunes in the Cloud is a feature of your iTunes store account that allows you to redownload or stream your past purchases. When you delete a purchased track that is downloaded to your computer (like the first one shown here) you are asked if you also want to hide the song from iCloud. This would remove it from the computer and also stop it showing up with the iCloud symbol as the other tracks from that album (which are not downloaded) do.
If a track shows with the cloud symbol you can play (stream) it by double-clicking the title, or click the cloud symbol to download a local copy to your library. If you try to delete one of these tracks you get a slightly different message confirming that you want to hide the track. Clicking hide will remove the listing from the library and any other device that shows your past purchases.
Should you want to retrieve any item hidden in this way at a later date use Store > View My Account > iTunes in the Cloud > Hidden Purchases > Manage.
To hide all your previous purchases that are not downloaded to your computer use Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

GarageBand on your Mac or on an iPad?
If you are asking abot GB on a Mac you do the following:
Create a new GarageBand project with a Guitar track
Insert the CD and drag the audio file of the Lesson track or backing track to an empty region below the tracks in the timeline of the GarageBand window.
Plug in a set of head phones and put them on to listen to your backing track.
Plug in your guitar and select the guitar track.
Click on the measure where you want to start your recording and select the guitar track.
Press "record" and start to play.
