Using AVCHD with FCP 7

Hello
I import my footage from my JVC HD GZ HD40, using the function "Log and transfer"
Does it transfer the files on my MAC HD in "full quality" ?
Will I need the originals files that are on the HD of the camera when I will make the .mov file ?
Thanks in advance for your help
Best
Cyril

Since FCP cannot edit AVCHD, it re-encodes the video into a codec that is better for editing. The Apple Pro Res codec is a very good codec. You can select which codec FCP will transcode to by opening the log and transfer window and by clicking on the gear at the top middle of the window. It will let you select preferences, and from there select which codec you would prefer to use - so if you prefer a different flavor of Apple Pro Res, you can select it there.
I think you need to decide if the video is "full quality" when it is imported into Final Cut. Of course, it will converted from the original, but my experience is that very few people can tell the difference between the original and the imported file.
The decision with what to do with your original files is up to you. Since you could archive the imported files just as easily as the files on your camera HD. It depends if you want to keep the originals for any reason, and only you can decide that. If it were me, I would leave the files on the camera while I was editing, in case something happened to my imported files. The I could return to the camera to recover the files. But once the edit was complete, and I had archived off the elements I used, I would probably delete the files on the camera HD.
Sorry that this is not more helpful to you.

  • Storing Video files to be used later with FCP

    Hi,
I am new to this so please bear with me.
I am using FCP 10.0.2 I believe and MaxOS LION
Only had the MAcC one week
I take a video, open FCP, then import the video and all works fine. I can also plug the card into a Card Reader and I can import the files.
Now this is the problem I have:
I would like to store the files from the card onto my MAC, the to be used later with FCP.  When I have copied all the files / dir structure to the MAC, I then open FCP, go to import files, go the the dir where the files are, but I cant import them.  I can see the files, but they are grey'd out.
When I view the files through Finder, they are all their.  If I now do an import from the Card reader it seems to work or if i stick the card back into the camera.
I want to build up a library of videos taken in its RAW state and archive it to either on my HD or onto DVD's for later use.
    Any suggestions much appreciated
    Eddie

when you did copy the whole file structure, you have to chose 'import from camera/open archive' …
I'm following the same workflow as you do:
    • in Finder, without FCPX, on my extHDD I create a folder 'backup Zoo Day May' (or any other descriptive title)
    • drag the whole file structure into it from SDcard to folder
    • when finally finding the time for editing, in FCPX, import from camera, then open archive, then digging thru my drives to that folder
    • FCPX notices this folder as a 'cam' and offers the usual import options, no need for that old (sorry, mish ) trick with dmgs

  • Trying to use Dropbox with FCP

I have FCP installed both at work and at home. I am trying to use Dropbox to transfer FCP projects between my two computers. When I pull up the clips that I saved to Dropbox at work at home, all the clips say "Media Offline". Any suggestions on how to do this?

What happens when you drag the media from Dropbox back into your FCP Event? Either it will relink or if it doesn't it's because Dropbox is writing new metadata to the clips that causes FCP X to determine it's not a matching clip.
Either way, I'd think that's far too much bandwidth to push across Dropbox. A hard drive would be much simpler- even a USB thumb drive.

  • Using streamclip with FCP

Greetings when extracting footage from DVDs I use mpeg streamclip. Usually I convert the footage to dv. When I import this into FCP it causes me to render every time I drop a clip into the timeline. Is there another format that's better to convert to from stream clip that will be more time efficient? Thanks

DV/NTSC Quicktime (not DV - which is a muxed format).

  • Use ubuntu with FCP/Compressor for rendering

    Hi,
I'm doing some research on video rendering farms. Right now I have Final Cut Express on a Mac Mini. It's good for what I do now (which isn't much), but I'm thinking of expanding my home office network to include another server running Ubuntu for various services (I'm primary a software/web developer). I was hoping I can use it to help render videos because let's face it, rendering on a Mac Mini takes forever.
I've read up a bit on Compressor and Qmaster, and getting a bit confused. I haven't found much on Compressor, but it seems that Qmaster can use unix based systems. So I'm wondering if that means I can use Ubuntu and what I would need to install on Ubuntu to handle any of this. Any ideas? Is there other solutions that I did not see?
This is mostly a hobby, so I don't really have a huge budget and I'm happy using Final Cut Express for now.

    Read this.
No mention of Linux there. It does say,
"A client computer can be any computer that has Compressor or Apple Qmaster installed and is on the same network (subnet) as the cluster controller."

  • My report on AVCHD and FCP

After mucking around with AVCHD files on FCP and mixing them with HDV footage I have finally got a good working outcome which may be of interest to others wanting to do likewise.
From the same .mts file from a Panasonic SD5 camcorder I made 3 versions via Clipwrap:
    1/ Pro Res HQ
    2/ Pro Res
    3/ AIC
I then placed each clip in succession on the timeline and carefully observed the result. I couldn't discern an obvious difference in spite of the fact that pro res hq was using a huge amount of memory. I therefore suggest simply using the AIC codec. Another point is that when I have attempted to import my AVCHD into FCE, and Pinnacle, WITHOUT using clipwrap, the 5:1 sound wasn't mixed down to stereo properly. Clipwrap seems to solve this problem.
So finally I can use AVCHD in FCP, mix it with HDV footage all, with a minimum of fuss and perfect stereo sound.
I hope this info is of use to others wanting to use AVCHD with FCP.
NOTE: I havn't checked with fast moving footage. The footage was of a person moving around in a well lit room.

Your eyes can see digital code when you're looking at a video? Wow, I'd love to have that ability.
Sarcasm aside, you can't use your eyes to judge the quality of your video, and you can't trust the display of your computer monitor. A well done mpeg2 can look amazing, and most people can't tell, or don't know how to tell, the difference between the DVD movie they bought, and the original it was compressed from. That's why home theater has become so popular.
The file size of ProRes is bigger because it contains more information. That's a no-brainer. Unless you're zoomed in all the way, looking at the videos on a pixel-to-pixel basis, you probably won't see the difference. Some will, most won't. But AIC is not nearly as high quality as ProRes. And you don't need HQ, as has be said already.
You can get portable 1TB hard drives with FW800 and eSATA capability from LaCie, and they're only slightly bigger than rugged drives. I use them all the time in the field, and I use ProRes and DVCProHD to edit.
AVCHD is an amateur codec. It's compressed. It was designed to make acquisition to delivery one step. (You know, film the kids in the back yard, and then show it on your HDTV so Grandma can see them). That's not what professionals use. Even the pros that use these cameras (mostly because of the price, and that the lenses are getting better) are capturing directly to ProRes in the field (using recorders like the AJA Ki Pro, or I/O HD to a laptop) and bypassing the AVCHD encoding altogether. The fact is, you can't improve your AVCHD footage. It will look only as good as it started, no matter what codec you convert to. You can, however, make it worse.
Early AVCHD used 4:2:0 color space, but the more recent AVC-INTRA uses 4:2:2. If you go to AIC, you're throwing out color information. That being said, if you can't see the difference using your eyes, then your eyes are not reliable. If you understand the reason why different color spaces work (in regard to the sensitivity of the human eye) then you would understand that we all know our eyes don't tell us enough.
But here's the real crux. If you're happy with the result, and it gives you what you want, then do it the way you're doing it. But I certainly wouldn't advise others to do it your way. It's not a better way. It's just an acceptable-to-you way.

  • How to use third party plugin with FCP, I'm lost...

    Hello,
I need informations about how to use plugins with FCP.
I do edit mostly classical concerts. I'd like to do basic audio post prod, without swaping between Soundtrack and FCP.
I need two simple things : add reverb (the built in reverb is really bad), and enhancer. So I looked for specialised third party audio plugins, but I couldn't manage to find something that work for me...
    - Do FCP support VST plugins ? How to install them ?
    - I tried a few audio units plugins. It works, but I couldn't get a friendly visual interface, like VST effects racks. Is it possible in FCP ?
    - does anybody know a good reverb plugin with a friendly interface compatible with FCP ?
    Please help, I'm lost !
    Emmanuel

What you NEED is a better recordist at the concert, someone who understands the peculiarities of your specific video deliver plans.
Soundtrack Pro is right up there with Motion in its impossible-to-understand interface paradigm shift away from industry standard tools. However, if you are in the position of being a sound editor, you must find a tool that works for you. STP might not be the one, certainly isn't for me. You could always try Logic. Yeah, good luck with THAT.

  • Using Digi 002 rack with FCP

Does anyone have experience with using a Pro Tools Digi 002 rack with Final Cut? I'm having some trouble making it work. I just want to be able to use during editing for audio output. The 002 shows up as viable device in audio/video setup, however, FCP claims it only has one output, instead of the 8 it has. Really, at this point in time I'd be happy with 2 channels recognized, but I certainly would like to stay away from mono. Any ideas?

    I'm running FCPHD 4.5

I think your best bet is to contact DigiDesign. I have run several searches on the FCP forums and SoundTrackPro forums for you. Nothing came up that indicates the device you are using works with FCP but I didn't read 'em all.

  • HT4682 Sony HDR-CX230/B compatible with FCP X

I see that the HDR-CX230 and HDR-CX230E are listed as compatible.  Is the Is the HDR-CX230/B also compatible?

The most accurate way to determine whether a camera works with FCP X is to actually try using it with FCP X.
Download the free 30 day trial of FCP X and find out for yourself
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/trial/
Note that you will need Mavericks  .  .  .  your info suggests you are still using Snow Leopard.
P.S.  As the HDR-CX230/B is a bog-standard consumer camcorder it will almost certainly work with FCP X.
New camcorders are appearing all the time and Apple has neither the time nor the incentive to test them  .  .  .  the list of compatible cameras is essentially a waste of time and should be ignored.

  • How do I use m2ts movie file format from my old pc with FCP on my mac?

I have recently moved from a PC to a iMac. I have a large number of Sony AVCHD movie files, which were imported to my PC and are in the m2ts file format on my PC. The original files on my Sony camera were deleted so these files are now all I have. Also, for each movie clip on my PC there are 3 files....a very large m2ts file along..... with two very small file....one is a .modd file and the other a .moff file.
I now want to use these m2ts files (and if needed possibly these other two smaller files) on my Mac make movies with either iMovie or Final Cut Pro. and don't know how to import them or convert them for use on my Mac. Can anyone help?
One final question. Can FCP author DVD's or is separate software required. Apple has discontinued iDVD for iMovie (which I find rediculous) and so I'm worried they don't support making DVD's with FCP.
    Thanks

Although I don't use Toast I know lots of people who do and like it for a variety of purposes; for example, many people author in DVDSP and burn disks using Toast. But there are a lot of versions and they have differing features and capability. Do a search in these (or iDVD) forums you'll find plenty of info. Don't know about the other app. Again, if you ask Apple, they may come through with iDVD…they have for others.
Clipwrap quality limitations? Try the trial and test the results for yourself. As far as I know the trial is fully freatured but there is a one minute clip limitation (which doesn't apply to the paid version).
    Good luck.

  • How do I use purchaed iTunes music with FCP???!!!

Is it really true that you cannot use purchased music from iTunes with FCP? There HAS to be a way. I promise I will not sell my video. REALLY TRULY!!!

The terms of use for the iTunes tracks is not for professional use, so if you want to use a song, make your movie in iMovie which will allow you to use the tracks.

  • Partitioning a MyBook to use with fcp... can it be Mac Extended and FAT32?

Hi, I'm a film student and a little while ago I just bought a MyBook 1T external hard drive (USB only).
I'm looking into reformatting my hard drive because when capturing with fcp (straight to the hard drive) I keep getting an error at around 9 minutes.
I did some research and found out that its because its formatted to FAT32 instead of Mac Extended.
However, I do a lot of work with PC's and transferring files on my hard drive and I read that once formatted to Mac Extended my hard drive would not work on a PC.
I was wondering if I partitioned my MyBook would I be able to make one part Mac Extended (for my capture scratch files) and one part FAT32 (that I could use like a regular hard drive for files between Mac and PC)?
Also just to be clear once the hard drive is Mac Extended I can still keep other files besides capture scratch files in that portion of the hard drive, it's just I can't transfer those particular files to PC. (Some of the website forums I read made me more confused haha)
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Kyle

@ nick would that let me capture my footage to my hard drive without having to babysit
NTFS does not have the file size limit silliness that FAT has so you should be OK in theory.
Run a couple of test captures and see what you think.
USB is generally not a good interface for video as it delivers data in bursts. You need a constant stream as provided by FireWire or SATA drives. If you are working with low bandwidth video codecs such as DV, you might get away with it for a while.

Working with fcp 6.0.6 I can't see the clip in the viewer until I start or play. Used to show fine.

    This is the FCPX forum.
Sounds like the viewer is in wireframe mode or is alpha display mode. If this isn't the case you need to go to the Final Cut Studio forum and give more details.

  • Seeking a DVR Recommendation that I can use with FCP 5!!

I am looking to purchase a DVR, not a Tivo!! I was looking for someone who is currently using a DVR, that has Firewire out, that they are using in FCP to edit content to send to DVD. I am open to any any all suggestions!!
As always thanks in advance for your the courtesy of your to read and reply to my Post,

Motion 2.0 was paired with FCP 5. Final Cut Studio 1 included both. When Apple switched to Intel processors, they released FCP 5.1 and Motion 2.1 as an Intel compatible "cross grade". FCS2 had FCP 6 and Motion 3. FCS3 is Motion 4 and FCP 7.

Well, when I start working (should I say try to work with FCPX, activity monitor in the %processor column for FCPX jumps rapidly over 100% and reaches more than 200% ??? What the **** is that ?
200% or more is not strange. Remember that your mac has 4 cores (you say it's 3 months old, so I assume it is a new model), so 200% amounts to using 2 of these 4 cores to the max.
Regarding the question of creating a new admin user: while it sits in the same system, it may help if the problem is caused by some user-specific preferences or settings. Not likely in your case, since you seem to have reinstalled from scratch, but still it is worth a try. It takes 5 minutes and may help pinpoint the problem.
