Using BIOS 1.5 on my K8N-SLI, "SLI ARPUTURE SIZE" option now in the bios?

Since i've flashed to this new BETA bios, I have this new option, "SLI ARPUTURE SIZE" I can enable it or disable it.  What does this do, and is there a performance advantage?

From what I've seen is to leave the option disabled if you are using SLI config, I think it actually hurts your performance.

  • SB X-Fi on the K8N SLI

    Hello all,
I'm looking forward to buying a Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Music, however I've read there have been some issues for the X-Fi series on nForce4 based mobos.
Am I going to have problems with the K8N SLI Platinum?
    Should I update the BIOS?

Thank you all for your kind replies.
The reason I asked about the BIOS is that I had a boot-up problem with newer BIOS (3.5 was the last one I dared to try)

  • K8n SLI Platinum

I've got the k8n platinum SLI and it says in the manual that it needs to be hooked up to a PSU with -5 v capability. My PSU has +5 SB with 2.5 A capacity on that line - are these the same thing?

No, they are not identical. Intel definition form ATX1.2&1.3Verson had removed the -5V,so in fact, the -5V should not exist since two years ago. As a result, few power supply in the market has -5v.
For power supply, you can use it to the MB K8N SLI Platinum to verify. If the audio works ok, it would be ok. Or else, you need a power supply with -5v.

  • K8n SLI Platinum can't get OS to boot

    Linked over from https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=97317.0
Greetings - This is linked from the above thread and I was advised to come here to see if anyone could sheed some light on this...
    System is:-
    AMD64 3500+
1gb of Corsair Low latency 2-2-2-5
    2 barracuda 300gb hard drives
K8N SLI Platinum mo-bo (now sadly running in single card mode...)
    PSU - Hiper HPU-4S525
    NX6600GT TD128E (Newer version)
    Forceware - Nvidia Version: 84.21.
Problem is - I have two versions of the 6600GT and the older one will work without a problem - either in SLI or in single card mode but the newer one causes the machine to hang at OS boot - I have tried booting with the card in slot two (running in SLI mode)  with the card in slot 1 (running in non-sli mode) and with the newer card in slot 1 (running in SLI) but still the same result - Is it the card, my PCU or a mo-bo problem?!?!
    Any advice/help Greatly appreciated!

What motherboard BIOS version are you running? The original?
A newer version might help: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1

  • So, is a -5V pin supply still required for MSI K8N SLI Platinum or not ???

I am looking to buy a new custom made computer. I want the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard for it. The problem is that the non-USA page claims that it requires the -5V pin supply. I have read many threads on this same topic, but havent found a definitve answer.
Is the -5V rail still needed or not ???
I read somewhere that USA models dont require it, as its not mentioned on the USA site. Well my one will most probably be from Taiwan.....
Is there a check, through which I can confirm whether the motherboard my local hardware store is selling, requires a -5V pin supply or not???
lastly, is that a specific model number, from which onwards, the requirement is no longer needed ????
    thanx in advance

I agree with SAB only because mine has been rock solid for quite some time.  If I could afford it, I would have purchased SAB's PC Power & Cooling 510 model.
The only other model that seems to have the -5v rail are the OCZ psu.  However, I have noticed a lot of users with tagan's and have yet to see someone complain about this psu.  Im running the 12v rail as a single rail at 30a...you can experiment with the dual rails and it will adjust to the need of your mobo up to 20a on each rail but then the other rail gets only 10a (at least I think thats how it works).
The tagan 480w u22 was built for the future:
    1.  has a 20/24 pin main power connector - shielded
    2.  a 4/8 pin cpu power connector - shielded
    3.  2 - 6pin vga connectors - shielded
    4.  4 - sata hdd connectors
    5.  Whisper quiet - you just dont hear it
    6.  12v rail at 30a - peak load at startup to 35a for 60 seconds
    7.  70% to 73% efficiency rating
Is it enough juice?  It seems to me that the manufacturers have realized that pretty soon we will have to purchase $500 psu's just to keep up.  So IMO, the manufacturers seem to be getting the point.  The new 90nm AMD chips take less power than the 130nm chips...and the new 7800gt video cards take up less power than the 6800gt video cards.  In the future, AMD will be coming out with a 65nm chip, which will need even less power.
So I think Im right at the sweet spot with the 12v@30a and its also flexible enough to switch to a dual rail system if I need that feature in the future.  Tagan does make a 530w and 580w psu too, but they are not as quiet and you only get 2 more amps on the 12v rail as you go up the line.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Sound problems on K8N SLI Diamond

    Hi pleas help
i just got my K8N SLI Diamond back from RMA and the sound still don´t work.
i install drivers and plug headset in green plug
    no sound ad all
it is set to normal hedset out and not digital.
i think the sound card is defekt
the digital output light up alle the time
and the soundcard is set på no digital

If your RMA was for same issue you've probably wasted your time. As Cendre says you need a -5v see for compatable power supplies.
No Sound, or very faint sound, on K8N Neo 4 Platinum Sli/K8N Diamond

  • Missing USB connectors on K8N SLI Platinum

I recently ordered the K8N SLI Platinum, but when it arrived the board didn't match up with the picture you can see here:
    http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/Products.aspx?product_id=703525&cat_id=77
    http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/Images/Products/ProductImages/LargeImage/7100Platinum.jpg
The yellow plastic surrounds that support the JUSB1, JUSB2 and JUSB3 USB connector pins on the motherboard are missing. The connectors I'm talking about are the three smaller yellow blocks you can see lined up in a row. This fault seems to make it far too likely that the pins will snap at some point in the future (lack of support), or that the USB cables may be attached incorrectly (no keying). Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone tell me how best to proceed to resolve this issue?

As mentioned, you'd be hard pressed to plug them in the wrong way, but if they are separate, you'd still have to sort them out anyway.
They look purty 'n all but it is nothing to worry about. It's not like there is a lot of movement in your case.
So you're saying that the connectors are just the standard jumper blocks like the pic below?
This does not surprise me, since I am in the PCB industry so I see things like this happen all the time. Not to make excuses or try to minimize it but sometimes, for one reason or another there could be a shortage of parts based on avalability from the part vendor. Perhaps even there might have been a defect in a shipment of connectors.
It really is nothing to be concerned about, I'd be bummed, but not enough to go through the hassle of returning the board based on that.
As for aicjofs comment about building boards years ago and it being a new thing, is true, I still see the old style on other boards still.

I downloaded some albums using my iphone (3GS), I then synced it with my PC. Now all the album artwork has disappeared off my iphone but not off itunes on the PC. How can I get the album artwork back onto my iphone?

I had the similar problem last night and found a solution (although it takes more than a few clicks).  Highlight all the album tracks in itunes on the pc and right click "get info". Check the artwork box in this window.  I found that the now playing art was showing up in the itunes window, but on songs that were missing artwork showed nothing in the get info box.  When I replaced the artwork by using the artwork command, or manually adding it into the "get info" window.  It was annoying but my iphone updated every album.

  • Can't open BIOs Set-up, K8N SLI Platinum, after re-flash

I used the USB Bio flash tool from the forum to re-flash the BIOs on my K8N SLI Platinum board to the latest BIOS from the MSI site, specs below.
After the re-flash, which seemed to go okay, I cleared the CMOS (turned off and unplugged computer, pushed the clear cmos button for about a minute), and re-booted.
I get a checksum error, no floppy found. I don't have a floppy drive in any case. But then I am unable to enter the bios. Pushing delete at boot gets me a screen that's blank, save for a cursor in the upper left corner. I can't enter anything from there, ESC key doesn't do anything. So I have to reboot.
I can get to the POST screen and pressing F1 allows the system to start and get to Windows, which seems to run okay. System shows that the new BIOS is installed. I just can't get into it to re-set to default settings.
If I turn off the computer, I get the checksum error again and in Windows clock and date have to be reset. But if I just reboot I just have to go through the no floppy found, then push f1 to get back to windows which has retained settings.
I tried  doing the flash procedure again and got same result. I haven't tried flashing back to the old BIOs yet. MSI's site only lists the most recent BIOs, my preference would be to try a different one, but not as old as the 2005 version that was on there.
Hopefully someone can tell me something obvious that I'm missing here.

I'd also like the RAM to run at at least 333, rather than the 200 something it runs at with this BIOS.
Check this with CPU-Z at "memory tab" ==> http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
BIOS post screen info can be incorrect., or current older BIOS by 200MHz it may means 400DDR In all cases its cosmetics,
the way of showing real of effective freq. can be changed in future version.
Also with four sticks it should be shown as either 333 or 166, not 200 or 400
Best check with CPU-Z how they are running
    Quote
It may now be possible to put something faster in there, but I don't know that for sure. But the 4000+ should improve performance a bit.
Such old CPU's can't be found easy in present days, also its not good investing to invest in old stuffs.
You want W7 and such, changing to the best CPU wont improve much the performance in overall..
Soon or later you have to change it, then this and eventually "newest" CPU which you gonna get will became useless.

  • MSI K8N SLI Freezes when using PCIe GFX

Build a new system with K8N SLI motherboard, AMD 64 3200+, Chill Innovation 510W PSU with 20 pin - tried with a 20-24 pin converter - no difference.
My problem is that when i use a PCIe GFX card the system freezes randomly, tried 2 different cards. An Asus X600XT Extreme and Leadtek 6600GT Extreme, but problem is the same. I have an old PCI Radeon 7000 GFX and with this, the computer runs perfect.
Both CPU and motherboard has been changed to a new one - didn't help.
Have installed newest graphic driver and Nforce driver. Tried both 3.0 and 3.1 motherboard bios. Changed HTT to 800, PCIe to 90 (clock generator).
Can it really be my PSU which causes the problem?

Does it fix the "2.5 minutes before post starts" problem?
Oh that is a BIOS problem?? I've noticed mine has STARTED doing that since I loaded this BIOS in (I had the 3.30 previously). I thought one of my hard drives was going bad or something and wasn't getting detected properly. Once I disabled the IDE controller it booted up in no-time. I rebooted again, enabled it and it posted right away. Weird stuff...
**EDIT** I just found this link in another post. Going to try it out and see if it works.

  • K8N SLI Platinum hidden bios features?

Does the K8N SLI Platinum have any hidden bios features? if so, how do I get access to them? (I have read how to do it on the other NEO boards, and have tried that, but it did nothing). The manual does not say anything about it. And all searches on this forum only turns up info about NEO/NEO2 boards.

it all depends on the CPU that you have. what core is it?
Going to be running an Opteron 146. It has done 280x10 on my MSI Neo2 so i'm aiming for the same or more on my Sli Platinum.

  • PLEASE HELP! Restarting issue with K8N SLI. need bios help???

      Hi people,
I would really appreciate some help this this problem im having. It’s a bit long winded but ill try to keep it short.
My pcs spec is as follows –
MSI K8N SLI (model MS-7185) motherboard
    AMD Athlon X2 64bit 4200+ cpu
    4 x 512mb ram
Running with a Radeon X700 256mb graphics card.
Ever since I purchased the machine ive been having problems with the pc loading up XP (or any OS for that matter!). Sometimes it would freeze on the loading screen and sometimes it would freeze on the black screen just after the loading screen.  Sometimes while running windows perfectly normally, a blue screen with writing describing the error came up and then the system restarted, however, I would only ever manage to read the title of the blue screen as the pc restarted so quickly. I remember seeing the word hardware though,  so I guessed it was a serious hardware issue. I lived with this for a few months thinking it might be something im doing that’s making it be so unreliable, such as a software issue, but I recently went on a mission to sort it out. The BIOS of the motherboard was password protected and I wasn’t aware of this until I had lost contact with who I had bought the system off, so I decided to restart the motherboard’s settings by pressing the reset button on the board itself. Next time I booted it up it told me that the defaults were restored etc and continued to boot windows, however now I can hardly get windows to start at all, the system restarts on the loading screen 8 times out of 10, and if it does boot up fully then it doesn’t last long before crashing on me. I messed about with a few of the BIOS settings, but to be honest I have no experience with working with these settings, its all very new to me. I have an idea  that it could be the processor or the graphics card causing the problem, just an inkling though!
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you. Adam

Can you furnish us some additional info on the 4 sticks of memory that you have?  Also on the power supply?  There is a label on the side of it that lists the manufacturer of the power supply and the amperage output for the 12volt power rail.
Thanks for your reply. here is some more info:
    4 x Kingston 512mb model no - KVR400X64 C34
The power supply is a Sweex Advanced Gold 650W [BA000110]. max currennt on 12v rail is 25A
Hope this helps. Thanks again for your reply.

  • K8N SLI (MS7100) 3.8 Bios Any Remarks?

So I saw that the 3.8 bios has been relieased for the K8N SLI Platinum board.  Took me a while to find it on the site.
    Here:  http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1
Just wondering if anyone has tried it.  Any comments.  Anything new from 3.7?  Did they put the 183 Mem divider back in?  Vcore changes?

Quote from: Wangmonkey on 09-December-05, 03:36:57
Ok Tested the 3.8 Bios.  I was mainly looking for the performance change and the 235 MHz Memory bug.
There was no performance hit on memory or CPU.  Possibly a slight increase in Sisoft Sandra.  Have not had time to run 3DMark05.
This bios got me another 2 point increase on the FSB before the bug kicked in.  Set the computer back to my good OCd settings and ran Memcheck for 9 hours.  No errors.
Going to run my serious of Memory tests and try to get around the Mem bug, but I think this update was for CPU stability and dealing with the X2.
So basically the bug hasn't been fixed yet!
I hope MSI People would take notice of this.
