Using BitLocker and File History

I understand that Microsoft has posed restrictions on the use of File History on device encrypted with BitLocker. It seems not possible to use a Networked device but also a USB Harddisk seems not to be supported.
Where can I find a complete overview under which circumstances File History will work? Are there additional policy settings that I could tweak? I don't mind that the history files are not encrypted. They sit on a tightly secured server that nobody else has
access to.

Actually, the screenshot above doesn't indicate that this issue is caused by Bitlocker, it mentioned something about EFS, network location and NTFS files system. but according to your description, I would suggest you temporarily turn off the bitlocker, and
check if it is the root cause.
We can also recorded log in Event Viewer to find more information about this issue, Event Viewer\Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\File History-Core or File History-Engine.
You can also manually check the copies of File History on the destination drive, and check the settings of File History\Advanced Settings, saved copies of files, size of offline cache, keep saved versions.

What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files of all types? I already have a Time Casule which I back up on and I'm needing to create more space in my flash drive in my Mac Pro, so I need another external storage system I can use to archive all that I don't currently need. I may still wish to edit and use the files, and I am not very techy and am a broke student... so anything grossly expensive is a no-no for me (between $50 and $200 is idyllic). If you could simply post links of different good/useful hard-drives that I can use, I'd be thankful.

Buy two external drives. Use one for Time Machine. Be sure this drive is at least twice the capacity of your computer's hard drive. Use the second drive as a bootable clone of your computer's hard drive. Should something happen you can immediately get the computer up and running from the clone until your restore from the Time Machine backup. This is what is called redundancy. Should either backup drive fail, there's another to take its place. Backup redundancy is very important. You can never have too many backups.

Well the applications you should leave alone as they install files elsewhere that are needed like preferences etc that won't be on the external drive if you attempt to run it from there.
Some programs are completely self contained and will run just fine from a external drive, but applicaiton's are usually small.
Now your user files! That could use some thinning for sure! Especially stuff you don't use that often and Video files which take up a lot of space.
You can buy a external USB drive at any office / computer supply store and just plug it in and backup files via drag and drop.
What happens when you plug in a drive is TimeMachine will pop up and ask to make it a TimeMachine drive, this just backups up everything on your computer to restore from in case your OS X or boot drive fails. It's a image of your drive and so whatever is on the boot drive is on the TM drive. So that doesn't server your purpose which is you want to free some space off your main boot drive.
However you should get another drive and allow TM to do it's thing to that drive, also to make a hold option bootable clone of your boot drive (using yet another external drive) using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper so in case your boot drive fails you can quickly and easily boot off the clone and have a working machine right away.

HT4059 I have IPad Air. I use Drop Box. Downloaded manuscript with Ipad air does not down load completely, no images. I used Ipages, and Files Pro. Mac IOS does it and windows XP.

The iPad will work with WPA-TKIP or WPA2-AES. AES provides much stronger security. There is much misinformation on the Internet on this subject.

Runtime.exec() - using cp and files with spaces on unix

I'm using the Runtime.exec method to copy files in a unix environment. This works fine until there is a file where the name has spaces in it. I've read the article on the pitfalls of using runtime and how it breaks a string on white spaces and this is what is happening. I've also found another topic that was having the same problem, but they were using /usr/bin/dos2unix. I've tried putting quotes around the filename, but it still breaks on the first space. Any suggestions on how to get around this or another way of doing this would be greatly appreciated.
An example of the os command string is:
/usr/bin/cp /tmp/file with space.doc /docs

CryptoWall and file history

A client got CryptoWall 3.0 on her Windows 8.1. By the time I got to it, almost every folder on the computer had been compromised with the tell tale HELP_DECRYPT.HTML files in every folder. She didn't notice the problem until she opened outlook, the Outlook
Data file had been encrypted and wouldn't open. Luckily she had an external drive configured with "File History". My heart sank when I looked at the "Configuration Folder" and found the HELP_DECRYPT.HTML files in there too. With nothing
to lose, I restored her computer to factory defaults, attached the external and tried to recover files via "File History". I decided to go back 10 days and restore her documents folder. Everything was going well, I was able to go back over a year
if I wanted to. When I began the restore it indicated over 4gb, it restored about 100 files and quit. I could go in and preview files but when I went to restore, nothing. Same thing with other folders, pictures was about 15gb, it only restored about 500mb
worth. I ended up going into the external manually and retrieved what I could. I'm guessing that the "Catalog.edb" file or the "Config" file has been encrypted, the Config file recreated itself. Is there a way to rebuild the Catalog file?
One other thing, this customer logs in with her outlook.com email address, is there a way to make her a standard user? I don't know how people are supposed to protect themselves from this threat, I can't even figure out how she got it in the first place, all
of my scans came up with nothing. If this ever becomes wide spread it could have devastating effects. Thank for your time and thoughts.

Save as swf file using httpconnection and file io

I have one application which is fatch the swf file from web and i want to save as in same to swf file format.
when i have fatch the swf file and save as .swf format i have unable to view as flash animation in browser and micromedia.

BTW sometimes flash uses communication with server to obtain some information before/during running. In such case you'll need to provide kind of your own HTTP server, pass swf to browser using HTTP protocol (not directly from HDD) then pass all additional data.

How to use AL11 and FILE

I am trying to output a file from BW. And in the future this process need to be automated.
I used OPEN DATASET ** FOR OUTPUT IN TEXT MODE in the code. I was told that I can find the file throught FILE and I can define the path in AL11. So now I got access to FILE and AL11, Can anyone kindly tell me what should I do there exactly? And advise me how to automate this process? Thanks a lot, points will be awarded definitely.

In FILE you defined a logical file, it is useful when path names change from one server to other, then you can refer to logical filename instead of phisical file.

Using Spotlight and file tags on older systems

I use a Macbook Pro on a daily basis which runs Yosemite, and I also archive a lot of media files on a small Mac Mini server which runs Snow Leopard. Due to hardware limitations, I can not install any newer operating system on the server. On my laptop, I make heavy use of tagging which is tremendously helpful for keeping stuff organized. When I move files over to the server, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that the tags don't disappear from the file metadata. However, if I do a Spotlight search on the server and search by tag, the results come up empty. The most likely explanation for this is because Finder (on my laptop) is using the Mac Mini's Spotlight deamon to conduct a query and the Mac Mini has no idea what tags are. My question is this: Is there a way that I can get Spotlight on my laptop to index the drive on the Mac Mini server without depending on the server's Spotlight deamon?

Doing a disk repair should be OK, but don't do a permissions repair with the 10.4 disk on a 10.3 system. It might be fine, but it's possible that it might mis-set some permissions.

Using database and file results in search collection

I have a document management application that contains data
about PDF documents in a database with a reference to the file name
to access the PDF, like:

We currently search on the name and number from the database,
but users want to search the contents of the PDF as well. The name
and number are inside the PDF, but there is no metadata to return
clean search results.

collection without manipulating the PDF files?

Windows 8.1 File History is completely unreliable and not fit for purpose!

I bought a new computer last week with Windows 8.1 installed and turned on File History. I've been pulling my hair out ever since trying to get it to work properly to no avail.
There are two inherent problems in File Checker which seem to have went unresolved for over two years now according to numerous posts all over the internet. Some files are not being backed up at all, and some files which have not been changed are being
duplicated. From searching the internet, it seems this has been an ongoing issue since Windows 8 was rolled out and it has still not been resolved by Microsoft.
I've tried all of the suggestions I've found such as running system file checker, deleting the File History folder and corresponding configuration files and running File History again from scratch, turning off Homegroups, but it makes no difference whatsoever.
Still I'm finding media, pdf and word files that are either being omitted or duplicated unnecessarily during backup and it appears to be completely random.
Until Microsoft resolve this major and widespread issue, File History cannot be relied upon to back up user files. Users need to know that when disaster strikes and they go looking for a file in File History that it's going to be there. Since
Windows 8 was rolled out, this appears not to be the case.
Microsoft, will you please fix this because the idea behind File History is excellent - if only it would work properly!!

I can understand that you feel upset since this feature doesn't work fine on your computer. I have used this feature for a while to backup my files, and haven't encounter such issue. My OS is Windows 8.1 enterprise.
As I known, the issue on this feature can be caused by following factors:
Not scheduled properly.
Clear up the history so frequently or the free spaces leaves before deleting files isn't set properly.
Disk error you backup files on
If you got network drive used to backup file history, the unstable network connection can be the caused.
corrupted system files
So we have to determine the root cause of your issue and feedback.
First, File History only protects user libraries, desktop, favorites and contacts. Other files, such as operating system files, applications, and settings, are not backed up. Make sure that the non-backup files are not in this scope.
Another thing is that File History only protects file stored on a local drive.
•If you use offline folders and folder redirection, your folders (like My Documents or My Pictures) are redirected to a network share and will not be protected.
•If you add a network location to any of your libraries, this location will not be protected.
Make sure that all settings a properly and the files were not excluded during set up.
Since the released updates every month will fix some known issue from feedbacks, please make sure that your computer is up to date.

I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users

Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from: Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from: Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?

A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email. (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta. The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.
I am not sure what you mean by "Manage" your MSN Contacts.
How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

File History Question

I have a question about FileHistory feature. Say you are using this feature on your computer. You're computer dies, and now you are left with this hard drive with the backed up files. What is the preferred method of restoring your files? Is it just browsing
through the hard drive manually, or is there a way to run the restore software on another Windows 8.1 install?

Yes you can use with an different machine and use the file history on the new system. When you enable file history for the first time and pick a drive for the new history, the history search function will look for any previous history
and ask you if you want to use the old history or create a new oneEdit: if you choose to use the old file history and you want it on a different drive the old file history
will be copied to the new drive. I know this works I've done it with all my computers.
Edit: I wanted to add I use a 360GB hd sata for file history. I use this drive as an additional storage space created through windows 8.1 storage space. Windows recognized this as a storage
space drive and automatically attached the drive as a storage space. Windows 8.1 with a new setup, was smart enough to recognize a storage space and created a pool. File history was not harmed and ready to use with the method I mentioned to initiate file

"File History" won't open/start

I'm trying to use the new File History feature in Windows 8 to create backups. When I click "File History" from the control panel, nothing happens. No new window opens, it just stays at the Control Page.
I've tried manually going to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\File History". I've also tried searching File History, then clicking "Save backup copies of your files with File History". Same thing - nothing happens.

I've also tried in the Action Center, under Maintenance, "File History is Off. Turn On." Clicking "Turn On" does nothing.

I would like to verify if other items under Control Panel work?
Please test the issue in clean boot first. Then try
system file checker to repair the corrupted system files.
