Using Bitlocker Data Recovery Agent (DRA) on Surface Pro 3

We currently have the Data Recovery Agent (DRA) configured in our Bitlocker Policy for our Windows 7 Systems, and it works fine. In situations where the Recovery Key for the computer object was not backed up to AD correctly for whatever reason or the computer
object was deleted, our HelpDesk can connect the encrypted drive to another system, and then use the certificate for the DRA to unlock the drive.
I'm wondering if the BitLocker DRA Certificate unlock method will work for Surface Pro 3 devices, in the case that that their computer object and normal BitLocker recovery key is deleted or missing in AD for whatever reason. Seeing as how our helpdesk can't
easily remove the internal HD from a Surface Pro 3 (I think only MS can do this?), I'm wondering if this BitLocker recovery option is still an option for Surface Pro 3's and if it is not then if there is another recommended option for Surface Pro 3's and/or
other Windows 8.1 Tablets used in an enterprise environment.

Seems that the problem lies in libinput. Maybe you can report that upstream. I suggest you recompile libinput with debug info and do not strip the binaries to obtain better backtraces.
Edit:
I have also tried running `swc-launch -- velox`, and get the following error:
Running on /dev/tty2
velox: error while loading shared libraries: libinput.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Server exited with status 127
Restoring VT to original state
So, perhaps I am having some libinput trouble. Does this seem correct?
Well, that's a different problem. libinput has several soname bumps because of API and ABI incompatibility. You have to rebuild swc against the newest libinput. (Although I'm not sure if swc developer updated the code to new API)
Edit 2:
Just to tack this on here for `gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland --debug`
I'm not expert on this, it may be related to libinput problem. If you don't include GDK_BACKEND=wayland environment variable when launching gnome-wayland.

  • How can I add a bitlocker data recovery agent?

    Hi,
I'm using an SCCM 2012 task sequence to encrypt laptop disks using bitlocker.
If I want to add a data recovery agent, can I just configure a GPO with the specific DRA settings as shown here:
    http://sourcedaddy.com/windows-7/how-to-configure-data-recovery-agent.html ?
Or is there another method I should be using for SCCM 2012?
    Thanks

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up.
Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?

  • Data recovery from a nonfictional Macbook Pro?

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro and earlier this evening, I think it might've given up. I closed the lid and opened it up a few minutes later and the screen wouldn't light up. So i restarted it and got this File with a question mark image on my screen. I did a bit of research and people mentioned it could be do to the MBP not finding the software it needs to boot up. So I restarted it, holding down Command + R and went through the OSX servers. I then went to repair disc permissions, repair disc, etc and everything checked out okay. It said it found nothing wrong and so I restarted it again and I was still left with the same problem.
Now before I decide to purchase an external HD case to move over data from my MBP to my iMac. I was wondering if there was any way I could possibly do it using an ethernet cable, wifi, bluetooth, or anything really, before I purchased said item.
    Thank you.

If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdateor CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Data Recovery from A reformatted MacBook Pro!

    Hi,
I made a big mistake, by not taking back up for a few files (unfortunately they were extremely critical for me) from my MacBook Pro hard drive before I gave the laptop to Apple service centre, where they had to reformat my Mac.
Is there any way I could get back/recover those files? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a ton in advance!
    Thanks

You could try the free demo of Data Rescue 3.
If it "sees" what you need and is reading it, you can purchase the full version.

  • Surface Pro 2 using Bitlocker startup PIN

    Hi All,
In our enviorment we're using the Microsoft Surface Pro and Microsoft Surface Pro 2 with bitlocker encryption using a startup pin.
The operating system using is Windows 8.1
We're using the folowing GPO settings for Bitlocker encryption:
    - Require Additional Authentication at Startup
         - Allow Bitlocker without a comatible TPM > unchecked
         - Configure TPM startup > Allow TPM
         - Configure TPM startup PIN > Allow startup PIN with TPM
         - Configure TPM startup key > Allow startup key with TPM
         - Configure TPM startup key and PIN > Allow startup key and PIN with TPM
    - Enable use of BitLocker authentication requiring preboot keyboard input
The Microsoft Surface Pro doesn't have any issues with the startup PIN.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 sometimes doesn't respond to the keyboard, there is no difference between a USB keyboard or a Surface Type Cover.
The only difference between the Microsoft Surface Pro and pro 2 is the UEFI bios.
Is there a solution to get bitlocker PIN authentication working on the Surface Pro 2.
The only workaround we've found is hold volume down at startup wich is not a ideal solution to instruct the users.
The oktober firmware upgrade didn't solved this problem.

We have seen the exact same thing as below. For reference, we are re-imaging ours with Windows 8.1 Enterprise Edition.
In addition to the issues listed below, I can't seem to figure out how to activate the supposed "bios level" on-screen keyboard that was supposed to be added to Surface Pro (v1) in a Firmware flash and should be part of Surface Pro (v2).  Does anyone
have experience with activating that?  I read an article a few months ago that claimed MS had addressed the latter with a flash to Surface 1.  I hope I didn't dream it.  :)
Please address this - I have high level personnel evaluating Surface vs. Dell and this will make a big difference in the final decision!

  • EFS recovery agent

    Hello Geeks,
In windows 2012R2 CA , I duplicated recovery efs agent template , then in security tab added my agent and grant enroll and autoenroll,
in properties of CA server , added the recovery agent,
but in gpmc , when I want to add my agent to recovery agent , it shows me that no certificate available!!!!!!
    please someone help me??
    thanks in advance

I think you are confusing Key Recovery and Data Recovery agents:
In the properties of the CA in certsrv.msc you add a KRA (you change a registry key at the CA after you read KRA's certificates from an object on config. container). This will allow storing users' private keys in the CA DB - it can be used as an alternative
to DRAs but it is unrelated to the DRAs in the GPO.
In order to add the DRAs to a GPO their certificates need to be published the agent users' objects in AD (option Publish certificate to AD needs to be selected in the template) or you need to have the certificates as files. I would prefer the latter not
to complicate things now. So if you have issued proper EFS Recovery certificates
export their certificates from the CA DB (Issued Certificates) or from those agents' personal stores as CRT files and import them to the GPO.
But make sure that these are really EFS Data Recovery certificates and not Key Recovery certificates, otherwise data recovery will not work. The extended key usage should include File Recovery.

  • EFS Recovery Agent not working on Windows 8.1

I know EFS data recovery has been discussed so many times in the forums but I could not find anything useful in the other threads as I believe I have followed all the required steps but still cannot get EFS recovery agent to work.
    I have a Client1 (Win 8.1) and a DC1 (Windows Server 2012 R2) under beta.com domain.
DC1 is a CA server as well as a domain controller.
    I logged into DC1 as beta.com\Administrator
which is the Domain Administrator account.
I duplicated the EFS Recovery Agent template on the
DC1 and published it into Active Directory.
Then I edited the Default Domain Policy GPO and under
    Computer Settings\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Public Key Policies
I right clicked Encrypting File System and selected Create a Data Recovery Agent
and a new file recovery certificate was generated for the Administrator account.
I exported the newly-created Recovery Agent certificate and then logged into
    Client1 as beta.com\Administrator and imported
    it.
I then logged off from Client1 and logged back in using a different account beta.com\johns
and encrypted a folder (with a text file inside) using EFS. (The folder address on local disk is
    C:\Reports)
Then I logged back into Client1 again using beta.com\Administrator
but I am unable to open the file inside the folder and I get an
    Access is denied message.
It is very strange to get an "Access is denied" message because on the text file when I right click and click Properties -> Advanced -> Details, under the Recovery Certificates, the Administrator account's certificate is listed
and its thumbprint corresponds to the same recovery certificate which I created in step 3. But I am still unable to access the file.
Do you have any idea why? Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance.

    http://esitech.spaces.live.com/

    Hi
The Client1 user needs to enrol via GPO to get the recovery certificate normally via automatic enrolment
Check the Personal Certificate store for Client1
I think the policy needs to be applied before you encrypt any data
    To manually recover
Did you export the Private key when you did the export ?
Did you export to a .cer file

  • Data Recovery On an iBook G3

I had an iBook G3 in college (2002, exact model @ http://bit.ly/VGVpSh), and when it died I purchased a new Mac and shoved the iBook in a box (About 7 years ago). It died from the logic board/display issues that all those dual-USB iBooks had. I actually had one, or maybe even two, logic board(s) replaced under warranty, but it eventually went out again, and I just bought a whole new laptop. I know I have a ton of photos from college on there, and that's really the data I'm now after! I can get the screen to work most of the time by placing a clamp under the 'Option' key on the left half of the keyboard. New problem though, as fired it up to take a stab at finding my data; I'm getting a flashing question mark when it boots up, which a little research shows is indicative of hard drive failure... My photos!!! So I've messed around with the computer for an hour or so, and haven't had any luck.
First and foremost, does the flashing question mark mean that data's dead and gone for good, period? Or could the drive itself be fine, but the controller/cables be bad? Sadly, ten years later I don't have the install CD, so that's not an option. I used a random OS9 disc I found online, but it wouldn't boot off that either; I'm guessing because it's not the original OS CD for this model... I also can't get the 'Firewire target' to work. The oldest computer I have in the house is an Intel 2ghz core duo 2 (exact machine @ http://bit.ly/LqDkzw) running 10.6. I'm guessing the new machine/OS won't do the Firewire target mode, as I've been unsuccessful when I've tried. I just read there are different Firewire 400 vs Firewire 800 cables, so I guess I could just be using the wrong cable as well..? I found an old Firewire cable to even try this in the first place, but I have no idea if it's 400 vs 800. Or would a bad hard drive preclude the Firewire target mode anyway?
I've also tried random things like Ethernet connections, but no luck. I'm guessing the probably-wide OS gap won't allow them to communicate anyway.
I found a bunch of these laptops on ebay for $45, So I guess I could just buy one used, and swap the hard drives? That way, if the HD it self’s ok, moving it to a new home might help (plus it'd fix the logic board issue). Downside is that the hard drive swap doesn't look easy at all, and I could end up messing up the HD even more.
I've never used a data recovery business, but is that possibly my best bet? I have no idea how much they cost, but I think a friend said his data recovery cost like $250. In all honestly I think I'd pay $250 for my old memories, I'm just not sure where to go from here. If anyone has suggestions on fixing it, or ANY suggestions on who’s a good merchant to handle this, I'd greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks all!

I use the external caddy as edex67 has suggested you try. This is probably the cheapest and easiest way to recover the pics providing that the hard drive is working. The only catch is you must remove the drive in order to attach to the adapter. Since you are not trying to resurect the iBook, the drive removal would be easier as disassembly would not have to be as cautious. Below links to disassembly and a source for an adapter.

  • Data Recovery After Hard Drive Failure!

Ok, basically, I've got a 2 1/2 year old iBook G4 with a bombed hard drive, and unfortunately, the last time I backed up was around 3 months ago. Here's what happened right before the crash: some applications like Widgets and Safari were acting fluky, and it wouldn't let me open Word documents, so I restarted, because I thought it might have something to do with the fact that i had downloaded the new version of itunes not that long ago and hadn't restarted since. well, when i restarted, the gray screen with the wheel and the apple symbol went on for a really long time, and then the blue screen came up with the cursor, but nothing else happened, and the blue screen just stayed there. as far as i know, the hard drive wasn't making any unusual noises, just the usual occasional soft sounds that my hard drive has always made (there are usual sounds, right?) a piece of information that might be useful is that the hard drive was almost full (it only had about 5 GB left, which i understand is how much you should leave) could this have caused the failure maybe? anyway, i tried using the hard drive as a target and tried getting another computer to recognize it and pull the files off, but that didn't work. so, i brought it into the apple store, and they got it to boot up but using some external hard drive, i think. they tried disk utility, but that didn't see my hard drive. then the tried disk warrior, and that saw it and repaired it or something, but then it couldn't get the drive to mount. so, i'm assuming that because disk warrior didn't work and couldn't get it to mount, then other software like data rescue, etc... won't either. like all computer users, i've got some REALLY REALLY important data on there, and all the data recovery places i've gotten quotes from are pretty pricey. if the drive doesn't require physical data recovery, only non-physical, as i hope, the cheapest is still $350. even so, the person on the phone there didn't seem to know nearly as much as the people at the more pricier places. so, are there any other options besides expensive data recovery? i read something about using dd - a unix thing, but i don't know the first thing about it (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) so i'm not sure i want to risk messing it up even more. and, if worse comes to worst, then i'll use a data recovery place... but can anyone tell me if they've used any of the data recovery companies below, and which ones are good?
(first three do evaluation for free, and then you decide if you want to continue based on more accurate price idea)
    MacintoshDataRecovery.com
    $500 non physical
    $1100-1600 physical
    Heroic Efforts
    http://www.heroicdata.com/data_recovery
    $350 non physical
ships to another (very expensive) place if physical
    ACS Data Recovery
    http://www.acsdata.com/index.htm
    $600-700 non physical
    DriveSavers.com
(recommended by Apple, probably the best, but the most steep, too)
could cost anywhere from $500-$2700 and $200 evaluation fee even if data is unrecoverable
Since this is our fourth hard drive failure in four different iBooks in 2 1/2 years, i am starting to become seriously disillusioned about the quality of the hardware Apple uses...not that i would ever get a dell or anything, but still....
THANK YOU in advance for any tips you might be able to offer, and also for reading this extremely long post!

I have read good reports concerning Data Rescue although I have not used it myself.
Once you get your data back, focus on a regular (even daily) backup routine, because as you know only so well, the question is not if a drive will fail, it's when.
    My condolences, by the way.

  • Data recovery on iPhone 5

Just before Christmas, I bought an iPhone 5 to replace an iPhone 3g. Intending to copy over my contacts to the new phone, I made the mistake of restoring the previous 3G backup on the iphone 5.  When I restored, it erased all the photos and video I had taken the first two weeks I had the new phone. (Oddly enough, the apps I had downloaded survived).  Is there any way of recovering this media?

The Camera Roll is for temporary storage. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer ASAP as with any other digital camera. The Camera Roll is also included with the iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
If the photos/videos were not imported by your computer and your iPhone synced with iTunes since the photos/videos were captured by your iPhone, you can use the Data Recovery on iPhone 5 to get them back.
More details of this program visit: http://www.recovery-android.com/recover-data-on-iphone-5.html

  • Iphone data recovery software.....plz help

Can you tell me that can I get back my contacts using iphone data recovery software

Before you recover contacts from iPhone you are not allowed to connect your iPhone to computer directly, because iTunes will save the recent data automatically. First of all, you should check whether you have the backup files
    iTunes> preferences> devices
All your backup files are listed here.
Then click iTunes>preferences> devices "prevent iPhone from syncing automatically." select OK and close the window after checking" don't sync"
Now you can connect iPhone to PC and make the iPhone data recovery based on you have the backup files.
Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.
The method above is based that you have the backup files
And if you are unlucky to have the backup, you may Google iPhone data recovery, paid or free, which offer the trial version and have a try to choose suitable one.
    Hope to help you!

  • CRASHED CF card -- data recovery??

    Hello,
My 4GB compact flash card crashed yesterday (containing all the pix from a wedding I'd just shot). Does anyone know how to recover the data (hopefully using a Mac utility, not Windows -- but I'll do whatever necessary).
The data is still there I believe — but it’s unreadable on the computer and on the camera — the files show up on the computer as just hieroglyphics and when I try to open any of them, suddenly that hieroglyphic file disappears from the list. However, the card shows only 1 gigabyte of 4 available — meaning that the data from the 300+ shots is still in there, but inaccessible.
It is a Hoodman 4GB Compact Flash card.
    Thanks so much in advance!!

I've used Boomerang Data Recovery software before and have had great success. Be aware though that they only let you let you install the software on one machine, they should let a licensee install on a laptop and tower.

  • CS4 design premium student licensing, surface pro 2

back in 2009 i bought cs4 design premium package(windows) for school. two years later my computer was badly damaged and was wiped clean of all software and never used again. i now have bought the surface pro 2 and was planning on dowloading my cs4 for work on the go, but i have a few questions.
below are a few questions with added detail that i would need answering if i am to proceed any farther.
will i be able to download my cs4 design premium onto my surface pro 2 through an online download if i purchased the disc version back in 2009, or do i need a cd to usb device to dowload the software?
    - only downloaded the software once on my old computer before it was damaged.
I lost the coupon/serial code, is their a way for me to find it again or redeem it.
    - cs4 was downloaded onto my old windows computer, but the computer was badly damaged and the hardrive was wiped clean.
      - before the hardrive was wiped my brother made a backup (would i be able to retrieve the code if l search through the backup?)
    - when i first registered cs4 i gave a lot of personal/contact information, would this help me redeem my code?
      - purchased cs4 at my schools book store. (don't see this being a problem, but thought i should add just incase)
      - still have all the disc's and cd case, just lost the little piece of paper with the code.
will i be able to upgrade my cs4 to a more up to date software like cs5 or cs6 without the code?
i would really appreciate any help anyone can offer; thank you for your time.

No serial, no install, no updates. It's as easy as that. And forget about trying to retrieve your serial number from a backup - that's just not how it works. It's genuine cryptography and you probably missed the critical parts, anyway. For anything beyond that, you realyl have to call support. Yes, there is a chance they may have your details because with S&T editions registration is mandatory to obtain a serial and they should be listed on your Adobe account already. Otherwise just ask them and be persistent.

  • PS and LR CC on Surface Pro

Does anyone have experience running PS (and/or LR) CC on a Surface Pro 3?  Good?  Bad?  Ugly?  Comments or recommendations?

I do not use lightroom Photoshop runs well on the surface pro 3. You may have a problem with the size of Photoshop's UI. CC 2014 2x UI option works Photoshop UI almost all  Photoshop UI fits one screen withe the 2x UI option enabled.   You would be wise to add a bluetooth mouse. And if you want to use Photoshop im tablet mode without a keyboard look into touchkey. Adobe need to create new touch friendly UI for managing tools use as you uses them.
For older versions of Photoshop CC and prior you can make a  registry mod and add external Photoshop Manifest to have Widdows scale what Photoshop display. Here is a comparison  of CC 2014 2x UI and Windows scaling. The big difference is Windows scaling also scale the image Photoshop  to a lower resolution while 2x UI does not. Windows scaling presets are 100% 1x,  125% 1.25x, 150%, 1,5x and 200% 2x.
