Using BootCamp on 2010 MacMini Server

Before the putdown for misusing a Server, please listen. I bought the server for it's hardware, not to use as a server.
I have posted the following on another thread I started in "Using Your Mac Mini" but get no response. I am hoping those better acquainted with the Server might know the answers I am after.
To Quote my own thread: "I would like to get input from people having ideas on using BootCamp Assistant on the 2010 Mini Server to install Windows-XP to the unused second harddisk. I copied BootCamp Assistant from my 2009 MacMini Client computer to the 2010 Server and it seems to be a free standing application. It did format disk 2 for Windows, but apparently Fat16 because the Windows installer wants to reformat to NTFS. Windows installer shows two disk0 to choose from, both showing as Master Boot Record. It doesn't show the 1st disk which has the Server Operating System installed on it. I don't understand why it is showing two disk0 when there is just one disk formatted for Windows showing in Disk Utility.
One of the shown disk0 is just one 500gig partition, and the other is showing a 200mb first partition followed by a second 500gig partition. both show as Master Boot Record.
Also when Bootcamp Assistant formated the 2nd harddisk did it install the necessary files into root to boot the Windows formatted harddisk?
Anybody have any ideas on that? "
Thanks.

You're centrally looking for Microsoft Windows help, and the Apple Server Forums probably aren't the best spot for that knowledge. Consider posting this in a Microsoft forum, and looking for help booting Windows XP on an EFI box.
To get a Boot Camp configuration available on your Mac Mini Server hardware, reformat the disk and load Mac OS X client on the box, or use a virtual machine to guest the Windows platform under Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server. That'll get you closer to where you want to go today.
It's been a while since I have last checked this (and I moved off of Windows some years ago), but Windows XP didn't know from EFI, and expected BIOS. And part of the Boot Camp stuff and what various VMs will get you is a BIOS-like layer.
Or you might try something of a more recent vintage, like Windows 7, which did reportedly have some support for EFI available.
But it'd be best to ask Microsoft about Microsoft. And see if XP can even do EFI. And I'd expect to see FAT32 (technically FAT28, last I checked) or NTFS for a 500 GB drive.

  • Setting up a mail server on a 2010 MacMini Server

    Hi,
I am having great difficulty in setting up my Mail server on my 2010 MM server.   Setup is as follows:
    1.  Domain name hosted by dyndns.org with mail forwarding setup to forward incoming mail to my mail address <[email protected]>
    2.  Outgoing mail is being sent from the server via my local ISP using their relay server
    3.  Mail Server settings in Server app shown as "Provide mail for: mail.domainname.org"
    4.  Authentication set to: "Relay outgoing mail through ISP"
    5.  dyndns.com confirm that the domain host side is set up correctly.
    6.  Local ISP confirms that local relay service is set up correctly.
Problem is Mail account cannot be activated in Apple Mail.    email setup details in my server Mail app are as follows:
         Account Type:    POP
         Email address:   [email protected]
         Full Name:         my name
         Incoming Mail Server:   mail.domainname.org
          User Name:      admin
Password:        password on the dynsdyn.com srever
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):   Local ISP providers mail relay service
Has anyone any idea where this setup is wrong?   Also, I am unable to find a server manual for OSX 10.8.4 server.  Does anyone know where I can get this?
Any help you can give is most appreciated.
    Thank in advance
    Roger

    Hi Linc,
For the email address on the server, I create the account in my Apple mail in the normal way.  I fill in the details shown on the accounts setup panel as shown in my original post above. I then click on the "Enable this account" button but it does not connect to anywhere.
For the Server setup, this is also described in points 3. and 4. above.
The result is that the server seems to be setup properly but this may not be the case, which is why I asked my questions.
Sorry I cannot be more explicit but if you are willing to ask deeper questions that might point to the problem, I would be more that delighted to supply the answers if I can.

  • SSD install in a 2010 Macmini server

Hey I am just wondering if it is possible to take out the two 500 GB HDs in my server and install 1 64 GB SSD and 1 1TB HD.....When I talk to apple they say I cannot do it......Has anyone tried? Why would I not be able to?
    Thanks

I did a drive swap on my (non-server) Mini, and can tell you it is a very invasive procedure.
If you choose to do so, I recommend following the steps on iFixit.com very carefully.
It took me about 45 minutes to take the machine apart to the part I could access the hard drive. There are several small parts and screws involved, so plan ahead to make sure you have the proper tools, and very carefully keep track of every piece.
Also, due to the extremely tight space inside the machine, check the stats on the physical size of the drive to make sure it will fit in the machine. Height should be 9.5mm or less, not 12.5mm (be sure to look up the stats, I'm not 100% certain).
The Mac Mini Server may or may not have extra room, but I wouldn't count on it.

  • MacMini server used as regular computer ?

I love the specs on the new MacMini server, and want to buy one. I see it comes with server software, and I know absolutely nothing about the Lion server software. I want to use this MacMini as a regular computer - I want to use it's first hard drive for Mac OSX, and the second hard drive to put Windows 7 on (running on bootcamp, directed from the first hard drive). However I know nothing of Lion server software. Can I disable the server part of Lion server, and use it as a regular computer, or do I have to wipe the server software off and put regular Lion or snow leopard OSX on it ? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

When you first start up the Mini Server, simply do not
enable any of the server services.  And if you do by
accident do that, you can simply open the Server App
    and disable it from there.
BTW, it does make a pretty nice workstation.  Using one
myself with a Thunderbolt display.  Also, if you decide to
get one, upgrade it to 8 gig right away.   I put the following
in mine and works just fine and is currently only $40.99.

  • I want to use a headless MacMini Server as a webhost for four sites.

I am considering trying the MacMini server to use as a webhost. I have a comcast business account with 5 IP's. It's an extreme connection speed package.
    My sites would be:
    2 Joomla! CMS sites,
    1 WordpressMU Site,
    1 SugarCRM site.
I am looking for something an idiot could install and manage. I'm using a hosting company right now, but would like more control of my OS.
I don't like the fact that Apple doesn't include phpMyAdmin as a standard package with Snow leopard.
I installed the above scripts on my macbook pro through MAMP and MAMP Pro, but all I can get is local access. The public cannot access my sites folder (regular snow leopard). So, I was told that I need snow leopard server to accomplish what I want to do. Can anyone help me figure out what I need, and how it's done?
    Walt

It does sound like a simple port forwarding thing.
Do take care with that Comcast account. If my experience is any indication you will not get the advertised speed. If you read the agreement it is only guaranteed for the first few kilobytes or so of any transmission and then backs down to normal speeds afterward.
Comcast will also do you a "favor" and turn the firewall on by default in the supplied modem/router. You have to call them and have them turn it off if it interferes with anything.

In my company, I use VS 2008 and SQLServer 2008R2, and I have rptproj projects in VS 2008.
The rptproj project has several rdl files.
I would like use VS 2010 or VS 2012 with SSRS and SQLServer 2008R2.
SSDT, which was introduced with SQL Server 2012. I suggest not possible migration rpt projects in VS 2008 to VS 2010 / VS 2012
Any alternative solution to do it ?
I have seen, but I'm confused it

    Iko says
You can now use Visual Studio 2010 to edit .rtproj report projects and .rdl reports.
You need VS10 SP1, then install the Data Tools for VS10, followed by the installation of SQL Server Express 2012 with Reporting Services and Data Tools.

    But I'm confused about it.

    Hi Kiquenet,
According to your description, you installed VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2, and create Reporting Services projects. Now you want to use VS 2010 or VS 2012 to open and manage the reports.
SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012 supports versions of SQL Server 2012 or lower, we can directly download Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012 from
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36843, then select SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Client Connectivity SDK as
    new shard features to install.
We can open the projects in both Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio 2010. For local mode only (that is, when not connected to SQL Server), we won’t get the design-time experience for controls that are associated with the viewer in Visual Studio 2008, but
the project will function correctly at runtime. If we add a feature that’s specific to Visual Studio 2012, the report schema is upgraded automatically and you can no longer open the project in Visual Studio 2008.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Which attached storage you are using for your Macmini Server?

    Hi all,
I am very confusing to choose a right attached storage for my small office use - with my Macmini server - for storage shared files, documents...
My intend is to select one with:
    - Firewire 800 connection (2 is best)
    - 2 internal disks so I can make RAID 1
    - Do not need any manual operating like turn on, turn off when power Mac down, up or electricity down, up
    - Quiet
    - Not make a lot of heat
I read many review of product as Buffalo, WD, Drobo, Promiss... but I still not quite convince before make an order. Each products has some weak points (as I understood through review):
    - Promiss: can not power on it self after electricity down and back, so this means we need a person to manually turn it on after that.
    - Drobo: noisy and bad quality?
    - WD: has some problem to maintain mount (through firewire) when reboot macmini?
    - Buffalo: I preffered this one but it do not have Firewire, only USB 2.0 and I afraid this is not enough for my sharing files purpose.
So please share you experience and help me to choose the best, thanks!

    Thanks!
I just bought 2 Buffalo box (single disk), I will try to buy Drobo box for a RAID soon!
BTW, do you have problem when restart server when use firewire connection?

  • Using MS Access 2010 on Windows via Bootcamp

Using MS Access 2010 on Windows via Bootcamp
I am wanting to do an online course which uses MS Access 2010. I am using an Apple Mac and thought I could use Bootcamp to set up a Windows partition to use the software.
My query is once I have created a database with MS Access 2010 in Windows on my mac, is the database essentially useless for my future mac work?
    Hope someone can help

    Thanks for the email.
I do think converting will end up being complicating. Do you know what Office for Mac is like, is it similar to MS Access? If so, I could do the course using MS Access and then buy Office for Mac and teach myself how to create databases using office.
As I mentioned there is no Access for Mac.  Microsoft never made one. Office for Mac includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint (and Outlook for the Business edition.)  And even these are missing some features of their Windows versions.  (e.g.: Excel macros often don't work on the Mac version of Excel.)
You can bring over your general knowlege of database programming (e.g.: relationships, joins, normalizing,) to any database product such as MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle Database, Filemaker, Alpha5, OpenOffice, etc.  But none of those other database products will open a database file made in Access.  (Or rather, may have very limited ability to open very simple databases, but you'll probably lose the relationship links.)  So your Access training won't be a total loss, but you'll need to learn the specifics of whatever database product you eventually use.

  • Lync Server 2010 without Exchange UM -- Can I use Asterisk for a voicemail server?

As the title implies, I am wondering whether it's possible to use Asterisk for my Lync Server 2010 voicemail server instead of using Exchange 2010. (?) We are moving to the hosted Exchange solution in Office 365 and do not want to pay up to the UM feature
    set.
Has anyone been able to get this working?

we did this as well. listed for the SIP response code and redirected the call to external voicemail.
however answering the call and desiring to transfer the call to someone elses voicemail doesn't generate a SIP response code you can intercept.  We jerry rigged a tech prefix to call outside for voicemail. but its annoying. forward your phone then unforward
    the setting is lost.

My question : Office equiped mixed computers , aslo Windows and Mac,

We woud use it for normal office work and get it by internet from other places as well

In general what you can do is: in OS X, use Windows in virtualization (aka emulation), as a "virtual machine" with VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or Oracle VM Virtual box.
That way you have both operating system open side by side without having to reboot into one or the other operating system.
Not sure whether you need a Mac Mini Server per se to do that, I do that with my MacBook Pro for instance. But the server would help since it has a quad-core CPU (more cores that you can dedicate to the virtual macine), and you can put the virtual machine on the second harddrive for better disk access performance. Was there some particular reason you were thinking of the Mini Server -- do you want to use server side Windows apps?
Again I have that setup on my MacBook Pro using VMWare Fusion with an XP virtual machine. In the Windows, I only use Office 2003 and some company apps that are Windows only. With Fusion (and I'm sure the other apps can do it as well) you can set a "shared" folder so both Windows and Lion will see the contents of it for reading and writing. I believe with Fusion you can also do your entire Home directory, but I prefer to limit it to a single shared "work" folder.

  • Can I input MacMini server thunderbolt video into IMac minidvi port?

I have a new MacMini server with Thunderbolt video output, and a mid 2010 27" IMac with minidvi external video input.
I have used the IMac as a monitor for my Mac Pro with good results for over a year.
My understanding from the Apple web site is that Thunderbolt video will drive a current model 27" LED Cinema display with minidvi input, so long as the monitor is the last item in the thunderbolt chain.
I have been unable to get the thunderbolt video from my Mac Mini to drive the minidvi external video input on my IMac.
Am I doing something wrong?  The monitor is the last (and only) item from the thunderbolt output on the MacMini server.
I continue to struggle with the disparate apple video standards, but need the ability to occasionally use the IMac in its external monitor mode, as opposed to remoting in to the MacMini server across the network.
    Any help appreciated.

    My Bad...
MiniDisplayPort is required, and this is what I have.
I believe that I finally solved the problem after getting through to a tier 2 Apple tech.
It does work, but there are several caveats:
    1.  Both machines are required to be on before connecting them.
    2.  This mode will support Windows 7 in boot camp, but you are required to connect the two devices in OSX, be certain the video is displayed on the monitor which is in Target Display mode, and then reboot the source machine to boot camp.
    3.  The MiniDisplayPort is the required cable, even though the source machine might use thunderbolt.
    Thanks....

  • Install Windows 7 on MacMini Server 0x80300024

I have a MacMini Server running Lion - latest updates.
It has two internal hard drives.
One hard drive will be formatted with Lion, the other with Windows Professional 7 SP1.
    (no partitioning)
I used Boot Camp to create a Windows Installer on an attached USB drive using a Windows 7 Pro with SP1 ISO image.
Boot Camp begins the Windows install process.
I am prompted to Select Disk 0 Partition 2 BOOTCAMP, and format it with NTFS.
After doing so, I get the "Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error: 0x80300024."
After Googling I see this is because Windows doesn't like additional drives attached.
Basically people are recommending either removing other drives or erasing other drives.
Neither of these options works, because the other drive is what has Lion and Boot Camp on it.
I wouldn't mind erasing it, as there is no end user data on it yet, but then how could I run Boot Camp to install Windows?
Is it possible to erase or remove the internal disk with Lion on it and boot from that USB drive without the aid of Lion/Boot Camp?
    Suggestions?

    TK321 wrote:
I had to remove the drive.
It was quite a while ago now, so maybe there has since been a software fix to either Windows or BootCamp to fix.
    There has not.

  • I am having keyboard problems when trying to boot up an OS (bootcamp on Mac Mini Server)

I recently tried using bootcamp on my new Mac Mini Server.
I uploaded a windows ISO Image perfectly the way it asked, Windows 7, I followed the correct steps, euqally divided one of the hard drives, and I was ready to actually set up the new Windows section of my computer. During this booting session, my dog came in the room with her ball and knocked the computer plug out of the socket. Now when I turn on the mac, the fan still works, the same Macintosh sound comes up, the screen turns that usual very bright gray, but it stays on that gray. After a minute or two, the screen turns black, with a blinking underline, as if it were confused to choose which operating system it has to boot.
My problem here is that I use a wireless keyboard (not by Apple) -- and I suppose that bluetooth syncronizes with the OS and not the computer system itself -- so my keyboard commands do not get recognized in order for me to navigate into Windows 7 or OS X Mountain Lion. I tried solving this problem by purchasing a brand-new USB keyboard (since Mac Mini Servers do not have the PS/2 entrance). I guess this new USB keyboard didn't work, I imagine, either because the USB slots on the machine are not recognized by the computer's internal system, only by the Operating Sysytems (which I hope isn't true), or that the mac had never used that USB Keyboard and wasn't going to be capable of using it until it had installed the necessary drivers, but without the OS running that would become impossible.
So my question is: Is there a way that I can connect a keyboard to the mac so I can continue installing my alternate Operating System? Is it maybe another problem all together?

It is starting to sound more like Bootcamp failed to install properly.
