Using Bt HomeHub 2 as a Modem/possible router (Lin...

Okay so here is my problem:
I have just brought a a new Cisco Linksys EA4500. It didn't come with a modem built so I though that I could use my HomeHub 2. Now this how I have it connected:
Phone line-->ADLS-->BTHH--- Via Ethernet Port 1--->EA4500 Router
Now I thought that would just work and I could insert the install disk, follow instructions and it works. However it didn't the software I was given displayed 'can not find your router'. The other thing is that my new router is not appearing when I scan for wireless networks after I have turned it on.
So what I really want to know is:
Is my new router faulty? (Or is it hidden until I run the setup disk)
Is the BT HH restricting my router from working
Do I need to buy a new modem?
Do I need to configure my BT home hub?
Thanks in advance.

I am not sure that would work, unless your router can support PPPoA, which I am sure the EA4500 does not.
There is not going to be any advantage in a stand-alone modem anyway. Why did you opt for the EA4500, if you only have an ADSL connection?
Its possible that you may be able to authenticate the PPP session using PPPoE, if that is the case, then you may be able to use a stand alone ADSL modem like the TP-LINK TD-8616. I did read of someone doing that with a Netgear router, so it may possibly work with BT Broadband.
If you just end up using the EA4500 as an Ethernet switch and access point, then some of the more advanced features of the EA4500, like printer sharing, are unlikely to work, as that relies on the "router" function of the EA4500, which you will not be using.

  • Using HomeHub as simple modem not router

I have a BT Home Hub 1.5 and a Time Capsule.  My Time Capsule is providing my network and the BT Home Hub provides the internet connection to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable and this all works.  I'd like to disable the router part of the Home Hub if possible as I'd like to set up port forwarding, but I think the 2 devices are conflicting when I do as I get "The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your AirPort device".
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

    Hi,
This you can do it in two ways:
    1. Make three header under top level....one Product A, 2nd Product B ( as Billing element) and third as Common expense ( only cost). Now 1st & 2 nd WBS, you have to have sales order linking with individual lint item, for third you will accumulate all the common expense till the period end then make a reposting of the same in desired proportion to both products WBS hierarchy
(This is if you want to have a track on the common expense as well.......like planning, budgeting & control)
After this reposting, run RA for individual billing element and hence you will all the complement detailing and control over Revenue and expense with respect to Product A and Product B individually.
    2. If you don't want to maintain that kind of detailing the common expense and keep track of it through project, then have cost centers accordingly and make an assesment/ distribution with respect to expenses accumulated at those cost centers for the period to the respective WBS under each product. Then execute the period end processes for the project.
    Or
You can try with have two more line items in the costing sheet as an overhead against common expenses with respect each product.
I hope this should help you.

  • Using own modem and router

    Hi,
I've decided not to use the home hub 4 and to use my own modem equipments.
I was told that I only need to enter [email protected] as login name and password as password, then internet should work...
It is strange because the modem could get an IP from the DNS, but there's no internet connection.
I already followed the steps here: http://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/258/~/can-i-use-my-own-broadband-modem-or-rou...
    any ideas?
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    thanks for your responses.
yes, I tried different login names and passwords. I knew they worked because the modem managed to detect the upstream and downstream speed, as well as the ip address, DNS server, etc...
I did a ping check through the modem and it said it worked... strangely, the ADSL loopback check was failed.
Other settings were UK default, ie. VC, PPPoA, 0,38... I am using a Zyxel P-660R-D1.
Key thing is I am using a separate modem and router, both of them are high quality equipment because i'll be setting up a server to do cloud storage. Also i prefer not to use all in one model-router coz I think separate equipments just work better.
So any ideas? Is there anything special about the Homehub that BT isnt telling us, whereas we need HH in order to get on internet??
    Thanks

  • Using airport express with 3com modem/router

    Hi all,
    I have a 3COM modem/wifi router with serial code 3CRWE754G72-A.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and to my dismay the wifi does not work with my Router (I have all latest updates etc.). I have no idea why, but apple support say its cos my router is crap and they dont support 3rd party routers (they checked my MBP and found nothing wrong with it apparently, connects to apple base stations no probs)... there are loads of threads on this topic of incompatible wifi routers with the MBP in the MBP discussion area so I wont go into details on that.
My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use? From what I understand usually you can use it to extend your wireless network by adding it as a client to the existing network. However I am suspicious if it will pickup on my 3com wireless network... my MBP doesnt so I wouldnt be surprised if this didnt either!! Is it somehow possible to disable the wifi on my 3com router and connect it directly via ethernet to an airport express, and use the airport express solely for createing the wifi network?
    Any other suggestions welcome!

My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use?
The only thing the AirPort Express (AX) could possibly do is join the wireless network created by that router as a client. This would only give you the ability to use the AX's USB printer port and AX's audio output. This would NOT give you the ability to use the AX's Ethernet port.
If your MacBook Pro can't join the wireless network provided by that device, the AX probably can't either.
The AX can not be used to extend the network provided by that device nor can the AX's Ethernet port be enabled to allow you to connect your MacBook Pro. Both of these require compatibility with Apple's WDS which that device does not have.

  • New to FiOS, can I use my own modem and router

I saw several questions similar to mine, but none that I saw answered my question for my scenario. I am sorry if this is a duplicate. I am new to FiOS. I have no other services from Verizon and do not plan to get any. No phone, no television, nothing. Just Internet. God willing, the installation will take place in two days. My house already has coaxial cabling. I have my own cable modem, a SURFboard SB6121, which goes to my router, a TP Link TL-WR941ND. None of my equipment advertises that it is FiOS compatible. I've seen other people asking about using their own modem and router, but in those cases the scenario involved other bundled services, and I understand a FiOS router is necessary to forward ports to television, phone, and computers. However, in my very simple scenario, can the Verizon optical network terminal simply feed its output to my coax, from there to my modem, then router, then comptuers? Is there any reason that wouldn't work? Verizon technical support just gave me a machine that wanted to help me troubleshoot my Internet connection, and I couldn't get from there to a human. Thanks in advance for the help!

Banish the word and the device called "modem" from your home when using FiOS.  FiOS does not use modems.  Your cable modem is useless with FiOS.  Do not plug it in. FiOS uses routers.  The router connects to the ONT's WAN port using MoCA (coax) or Ethernet.  The installer will enable one of the ONT's WAN ports.  If you order 150Mbps or higher speeds, they will have to use Ethernet.  For slower speeds, coax is the default.  Many installers will use Ethernet if you ask nicely, but usually only if it isn't too much work.  Make sure it's easy to connect a router to the ONT using Ethernet, and you should be okay.  If Ethernet needs to be run through the walls, your best choice is get it done ahead of time.  You can always call later and get the ONT's WAN port switched. The only routers available with a MoCA WAN port are the Verizon models.  The Verizon routers are good devices for most users.  People who like to tweak their networking gear don't like them as many advanced features are limited or locked down.  You can't run any other router firmware on them.  WiFi range is decent, but not great.  I'm quite happy with my Quantum router.  YMMV. If you get Ethernet WAN enabled, you can use any router you want.  However, know that Verizon provides zero support for any other router.  They won't even mention it as an option.  That doesn't mean you can't use one, simply that you must do so without Verizon's help. There are reports that they won't even complete an install without one of their routers to verify service.  If you don't use one of their routers, consider renting one for a month to complete the install or even buying a used one.  If you own a Verizon router, you can install it if you ever suspect Verizon networking issues.  This will allow you to call their support. This FAQ is very helpful:http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077 Good Luck.

Which one can I use properly to monitor all the wireless Devices in my hous

Actually, none of the options will do what you are looking for it to do. That is because, this application only monitors the traffic from the device it is hosted on. That would also mean that you would have to run a copy on each computer that will access the Internet on your network; note their individual usages, and then, combine them to get an idea of the total usage.
However, if you are only interested in the amount of Wi-Fi traffic that only your computer is seeing, then the "AirPort Network Card" option would be the correct choice.

  • Using iPhone as wireless 3g modem ? possible ?

I have the older iPhone, and am seriously considering a new 3g iPhone. However, I have read in some reviews that the new iPhone 3g canNOT be used as a wireless 3g modem to connect your MacBook Pro to the internet. I would ideally like to wirelessly (using the built-in wlan), connect my wlan MBP to the internet. If that cannot work, could I connect an iPhone using a wired usb connection to my laptop, and then connect to the internet ?
    Thanks

This is not allowed right now.
(its called tethering - google for that)
Someone made an app-store app that did this, but apple yanked it. AT&T wants another $30 per month for a PC Data plan.
This may re-appear some day, because it is technically possible, just not currently allowed by Apple and ATT.

I want to use my jetpack 890L as a wireless router to enable wireless printing with a canon laser printer. Is this possible, and does the jetpack support WPS?

I’ve used several wireless printers with a 4510 and 5510 Jetpack and they all print just fine. The MHS890L does not support WPS. The WPS Wikipedia article briefly addresses the reason why you should not use WPS.  If you’re having trouble setting up your printer the manufacturer has a toll free support line to help you. Your Jetpack has the Wi-Fi Password on the bottom, under the battery, and or in the LED display.

Yes, if you plan to connect the AirPort Extreme back to the Motorola modem/router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme with cable modem and router?

    Hi--
I'm having a house built and all of the wiring for TV, phone, and internet will be centralized in a closet. The cable modem can be placed there as well. In one room in the basement I want to use my Airport Extreme for my iMac and USB external hard drives. In another location of the basement, I'd like to set up a Time Capsule for another desktop and USB printer. If the cat5e comes out of the wall at each location, I "think" I need a router at the closet location. I also thought I might need an Airport Express upstairs on first or second floor to boost signal for my laptop. The house isn't that big so maybe that's overkill. So beyond the router question, do I want to set up a roaming network and have the Airport Express connected via ethernet or just wireless if the thought is that I need this? Finally, if I should connect cable modem to router to Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, etc., in what order and ports does the equipment get connected? Many thanks!!

Welcome to the discussions, Forum Girl!
It would be best to position the cable modem and main router in the central location like the closet if possible. The other devices would connect via ethernet to the wall jacks in each room.
If you could setup a "roaming" wireless network as you mention, this will give you better wireless performance and coverage. This is the way commercial establishments like airports, businesses, etc. are configured for wireless.
The order of connection would go something like this: ethernet connection > cable modem >main router>devices. Devices could be computers, routers, a backup device, etc. Since the Extreme has only 3 LAN ports for ethernet connections, you will also need to plan to install an "ethernet switch" near the location of the main router to provide enough ethernet jacks. If you are planning to use DirectTV, etc or your audio/video devices require ethernet connections (most new products do for updates and extra features), be sure to plan for that as well.
Make sure that CAT5e or CAT6 wiring is run so you will be able to take advantage of faster gigabit speeds.
Finally, it would be a good idea to work with an IT specialist to go over your plans to make sure all the bases are covered. This would be money well spent.

  • Connecting Modem to Router

I just got Infinity 1 installed today. The modem is next to the master socket and is 10m away from the HomeHub router which is under the TV.
The default installation consisted of a normal ethernet cable from the modem to a square ethernet wall socket, then 10m of thick white cat5/6 cable to another ethernet wall socket, and then another normal ethernet cable to the HomeHub router. Seemed a bit over complicated for what I needed. I got them to not screw the wall sockets to the wall or pin the cable to the wall so it was more flexible in future.
So when they had left I tried connecting the modem and router using a single 10m shielded ethernet cable I already had and it seems it has synced at 39.9Mbps when I run the BT Retail speed test. That is the maximum I can expect.
Do the ethernet wall sockets do anything special or can I just replace that set up with the single ethernet cable permanently?

This is what they originally set up between the modem and router. Three cables. Obviously the sockets would normally be screwed to the wall next to the modem and TV and the white cat cable pinned around skirting boards and door frames. For me they were just lying on the carpet floor so seemed a bit unnecessary for what I need.
I've just replaced it with the single cat5 cable now. Wanted to just make sure I wasn't going to mess up any bedding in period by doing so. First day and all that.

  • Connecting Timemachine to Verizon DSL modem/wirelss router

How can I successfully connect my Timemachine to a Verizon GT704WG DSL modem/wireless router? Set-up I tried: The DSL line (reg. phone wire) is connected to the Verizon device. I connected the Timemachine to the router via ethernet. On my Verizon Network (loggin in via the browser) I can see the device connected. But the Timemachine keeps blinking Orange (error I assume). I cannot see the device via my MacBook pro in AirPort Utility (when trying to open TimeMachine). I also cannot click on manual set-up (option not available - grayed out).
Question: Is it possible to connect Apple's Timemachine to another DSL wireless router via ethernet. Are there setting I must use to make the timemachine available, since the DSL router recognizes the device. How does one set this networking configureation up - or are there other devices I need as an intermitted relay - and will thise hamper troughput?
PS: My DSL router does not have a firewall set-up for the connection to the Timemachine. I allowed all rules for the device. DHCP is dynamic.
    Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you Neturonboy for asking this question and thank you Tesserax for answering it. It's amazing that Verion's site has nothing about this; they do mention the Time Capsule, but nothing about this typical configuration. I have the GT784WNV model DSL modem/router, which is probably similar to yours. As soon as I turned Connection Sharring Off (Bridge Bode) and updated changes it worked.
However, I couldn't find where to do this at first using Mac OS X Lion. Luckily, I had an older laptop, which had the more familiar looking AirPort Utility version 5.4.2 you're talking about. After I had switched to Bridge Mode, I went back to Lion's version and could easily see where this setting is located. In Lion's (10.7.4) AirPort Utility, click on the image of your Time Capsule (there is no "Manual Setup" button in Lion), then select Network (not Internet), then change Router Mode (not Connection Sharing): to Off (Bridge Mode).
    About Guest Networks:
Note, if you have a Guest Network, then once you go to Bridge Mode, this feature is turned off; the whole Guest Network tab disappears from the choices under Airport (using the older AirPort Utility). Since these Verizon modem/routers are also wireless, your guests can access the network directly from  Verizon's router instead of going through your Time Capsule. Perhaps having a wireless router feature for your DSL modem makes the Time Capsule's Guest Network option redundant. You can get the network name, and other security information from the label on Verizon's router, but there is also a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) feature that looks like it might be useful for sharing your network. There's a physical button on the modem and there's a settings page on the routers' web browser accessible settings at 192.168.1.1.. I'm still looking into this.
    Good luck!

  • Modem and Router

Hi,I have a linksys EA3500 Router and a Bell modem. the modem is about 10 years old. I keep getting downtime when facetiming friends on the Ipad. Should I get a better router or modem or both? We have about 8 wireless devices hooked up at any one time.Go easy on me, I am not tech savvy :-)

The answer to your question depends on a number of factors: 1.  What type of package do you have from Bell?  What are you paying to get in terms of speed? 2.  There are no issues with your router (it's more than good enough for what you're using it for). Your modem is likely getting a bit out of date.  If it's anything like Rogers, your modem might be limiting your internet speed simply because it's old hardware.  My old modem (which was about as old as yours is) capped my internet speed at 10 Mbps, and I wasn't eligible for anything faster than that without upgrading the modem.  That cap may have been instituted at Rogers' end to get me to upgrade, but either way the result is the same. 3.  Are all the devices that are connected active and using the connection at the same time?  That can have an effect, depending on the speed of your connection. The slower the overall speed, the slower everything will work if it gets used simultaneously, as that speed needs to be shared by everything on the network. 4.  Is the downtime something that just started recently, or something that's been going on for quite some time?  If it's only recent, check and see if there has been any changes in the way your connected devices use the net, or possibly check to see if someone else has weasled their way onto your network and are making use of your connection.  It could also be a sign of a hardware issue, either with the router, modem (most likely, given its age) or the iPad. Hope that helps! JB

  • Do I have to use the homehub?

    Hi all.
I have requested a MAC code from my ISP and am looking forward to inifinity.
According to the sterile videos here I will once signed up get a homehub and inifnity modem.
    Can anyone confirm the following:
The Modem is just that, its not a router or firewall.
The routing/firewall/wireless is handled by the Homehub.
I can if wanted replace the homehub with my own Router/Firewall/Wireless device, such as an ASUS RT-N56U. (I guess this drops me off the opportunity to use that wireless thingy throughout the country?)
    Thanks for any feedback.

    Hi there,
Out of interest, what 3rd party router are you using? I'm seriously thinking of getting either a WNDR3700 or WNR3500 (both Netgears) to replace my HH2.
More importantly, are you able to connect correctly to the XBox Live network? IE are you able to get an "Open NAT" status on games such as MW2 and Black Ops?
