Using built in camera as motion triggered security camera

I live in an apartment and suspect that some of the staff have come in and have been rooting through some of my files (paper ones) and playing some of my music instruments. Not at all paranoid, things have really been moved around. What reliable software can I get that will capture people in my apartment, and save it to a terabyte ext hard drive I have connected? And/or send it to my non 3g iphone? I don't want it constantly recording, and I'd like it to shut off recording after x-amount of time of non movement.
I really need to be sure who this is and what they are doing. Help? Ideas?

ha! I just don't have much experience downloading from unfamiliar sites and have heard of the nightmares folks have had when doing that (though, usually on PC's, not Macs). Thanks for the feedback.
I think you'll find that dangerous sites, with bad downloads are almost always dealing with protection softwares and p0rn. If you are looking for software with ratings you can always check VersionTracker.com, MacUpdate.com, Downloads.com - These sites have all been around for many years and have earned a great reputation for trying to keep the real dangerous crap off their services.
There are no download links on the the site I referenced. That site simply provides you with a set of instructions, and refers you to the commercial sites where you can buy the parts or software's.
Now it's up to you to decide if a commercial site would endanger their reputation or income by selling a product that isn't safe to use or is useless.
It's an easy matter to check a site's reputation for quality, customer service, etc. I use Google, but it's not perfect. One thing to check is the comments at the end of the instruction page to see if they seem real and if the information on the page makes sense and proves accurate when you go to the sites the article lists for the ingredients. You can also take a look around the site at other articles and judge them for their accuracy and quality.
One thing that I like is that both the Twisted Melon and Evo Logical sites referenced in the article accept PayPal so they are not given any of your credit card information, they just get paid. They don't get to keep a PayPal account for very long if there are many complaints.
Both sites also offer some customer support. The Evo Logical site is posting quite a bit of support info on their site about the product and the Twisted Melon site has a Version History showing how often they are updating their program and they also have working links to MacWorld articles and links to software download sites that have ratings and comments:

You don't know me, and what I say can be wrong. We are just users on this forum and you still need to check things out and use common sense when spending your money.

  • Using Built in MacBook Pro Camera as a Security Camera

This might not be the right place to ask this, but here goes:
Is there a program or widget out there that can turn my Macbook Pro's webcam into a security camera. The scenario would be something like me leaving my laptop out on my desk and either taking a video at fairly low resolution (so as to not take up a lot of space) or take a small picture every 3-5 seconds that would later be compiled into a slide show. All of this being done silently so that whoever is either breaking into my room or stealing things does not know that this is going on. Also, sound does not have to be recorded.

so that whoever is either breaking into my room
Install a deadbolt on your door. If someone is breaking into your room, have you notified the police?

  • Using iSight as a streaming security camera

I have a strange problem. My husband and I just adopted a new dog - 9 month old Belgian Malinois. He's too smart for his own good. The crux of the problem is that he's getting out of his crate. The crate is LOCKED and stays locked. Our trainer suggested that we use a security camera to monitor him while we're at work so we can at least learn HOW he's getting out.
Immediately I thought of my awesome MacBook Pro with built in iSight. I have a few small problems. My work blocks AOL Instant messanger, so I can't see the video feed through iChat. I've tried a trial of Timbucktu but for some reason my work computer can't communicate with my home computer.
AND I'll need a program that will run on both Windows and Mac if it's a program that I'll need to use.
HELP! I've got to be able to see what this dog is doing when I'm not home!!! Is there a way to automatically "videoblog" it?

  • 60d using built-in optical system "locks up" camera intermittently

I've been having an intermittent problem for a long time with my 60d "locking up" that seems to be getting worse.  I'm using the built-in optical system in the 60D in E-TTL to fire a Speedlite 580EXii and a speedlite 580EX, both off camera, using the pop up flash to trigger them but setting it so that the pop up flash doesn't add any extra light to the exposure.  It's just triggering the Speedlites, camera usually in manual mode but flashes in E-TTL.
I love this set up but the problem I have is that occasionally the camera will just lock up.  I try to press the shutter halfway to focus and get nothing.  The camera's still on but completely unresponsive.  It's not the battery cycling, as I've checked that out, and I don't believe it's a low light focus issue, as I'll often point the camera right at a light when it does this hoping to get it to work again and usually it does nothing to help.  The weird thing is that usually after a minute or two of fiddling around the pre-flash sensor will finally come alive and start doing it's thing again and I can finally fire off a shot again and it'll work till it locks up again the next time.  It might happen four times during an hour of shooting.  Sometimes turning the camera off and back on will clear it and sometime it doesn't but usually when it's locked up it'll stay like this for a couple minutes until finally it becomes responsive again.  I know it sounds like a battery issue but I really don't think it is as I've swapped them out many times and still get the same problem.
I should point out I've had the same problem with two Rebels and now this 60d so I don't know if it's my gear or operator error or what.  I know the wireless E-TTL system is complicated and doesn't always work but this problem is wildly frustrating and seems to be getting worse.
Has anyone else ever had a problem like this?  I don't know if I should spring for the 600EX and the radio controller and if that might be better or not.
If anyone has any insights or has experienced this before I'd love to hear how you dealt with it....Thanks, Robert

If the "lock up" occurs sometime after taking a series of shots, I would venture to guess that it's the on-board flash shutting down temporarily to prevent overheating. After it cools off a bit, the camera returns to working normally.
When used for wireless off-camera communication with other flashes, the on-board flash fires a series of "pops", which can heat up the flash tube a lot if being used relatively continuously, eventually causing overheating and risking burning out the flash tube. I believe all the camera's are designed with some sort of sensor to stop the flash from firing when it starts to get overheated, rather than let it burn itself out. After the flash cools, it resets and allows the flash to work again.
I don't know if you can cause the on-board flash to shut down this way if it's simply being used as flash. It might not recycle fast enough to overheat. But I really don't know because I almost never use on-board flashes on any of my cameras that have them. The very short duration "bursts" used for off-camera flash communication, however, don't fully drain the flash's capacitor and cause it to slow down and recycle, the way using it as a regular flash will. So there is more risk of continuous usage causing overheating.
If it is due to overheating, the easiest solution is to get and use an ST-E2 module. That's an off-camera flash controller that sits in the camera's hot shoe and communicates via near IR light emissions, has a little better range, and will not overheat. It's less obnoxious than the on-board flash too.
The 600EX-RT is used with a different off-camera controller, the ST-E3-RT (or a second 600EX-RT). It cannot be controlled by the camera's on-board wireless system at all. But it would give considerably greater range in most situations and doesn't require a direct line-of-sight setup the way the optically triggered flashes do.

  • Triggering a camera using LabView

    Hey,
I have a device that I'm moving using two servos. I'm controlling the motion using LabView. I want to capture the images of the device using MotionPro X3 high-speed camera (To track the position etc). So I need to synchronize the camera trigger and the motion using LabView. The software that comes with the camera (Motion Pro Studio) has the ability to allow the camera to be triggered using an external source. So I generated an analog signal using labview, and I connected a BNC cable from the analog output on the DAQ board to the camera. The camera needs at least 3V so it gets triggered, so I created a point-slider in labview, to increase the voltage from 0V to at least 3V.  I got this part to work.
So now I'm trying to combine the camera control code with the motion control code. In the motion control VI, when I hit "Run" the device starts to move, but data (Position, forces etc) is only saved when I hit "Save Data". What I want to do is to trigger the camera when I hit "Save Data", and not when I run the program. Is there a way to increase the voltage from 0 to 3V when I hit the "Save Data" switch?
Thanks in advance. I appreciate it if you could help me as soon as possible. This is driving me crazy.

    Hi FirasOSU
If possible, please post what kind of software you have available to work with and the specific hardware. The information I am posting is assuming you are working with one of our data acquisition boards which work with our NI-DAQmx driver.
There are several ways you can trigger the camera from a DAQ board depending on the model. I would recommend that you refer to the following knowledge base/white paper regarding tips and techniques for triggering with a data acquisition board and NI-DAQmx VIs
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/4329/en/
Here you will find information regarding options for triggering with our data acquisition boards using LabVIEW and sample code you can use to add triggering functionality to your code.
Also depending on your camera ports and if you have access to our vision tools that can be added to LabVIEW (Vision Development Module), then you can use the following example code to trigger your camera acquisition.

  • Can I use built-in iSight camera with other apps?

Can I use built-in iSight camera with other apps?
    How?
doesn't work in imovie or image capture

    Hi Judson,
THe built in iSight will actually work with iMovie if you have the version of iMovie which comes with iLife 6. (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61929 for a mention)
There is a slightly clumsy "workaround" available for use with earlier versions of iMovie, but you need a dv cam to use it - see http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051217210335199
I gather that "EvoCam" - http://www.evological.com/evocam.html - will also work directly with the built in iSight.
So too, should recent versions of QuicktimePro.
As for other apps, tell us what you wish to do with it. We may be able to come up with some suggestions.
    Cheers

what is IP cameras support Labview ?
and what VI i must Use??????

    Hi koeyers,
Are your cameras Gigabit Ethernet? If they are, we have some interfaces that you can use as frame grabbers.
    http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/es/nid/203245
And you can use our image acquisition driver, NI-IMAQdx, you can download our driver for a 30 days free trial.
    http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/960/lang/es
NI-IMAQdx installs LabVIEW VI’s that calls the NI-IMAQdx driver to control you camera, example files are install with the driver too!
If you are not using Gigabit Ethernet, you will need to use the driver that ships with the camera. Do you have the data sheet of the camera you are using? Or are you starting to look for cameras?
If you are looking for cameras this is a good link that will help you find cameras that are supported by our drivers:
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/nipc.specs?action=search&asid=1102
Some IP cameras (not Gibabit Ethernet) have ActiveX calls to control them, and LabVIEW can make those ActiveX calls, you just need to have the documentation of those calls that must come with the camera. Other cameras might have DLL’s and you’ll have to make calls to those DLL’s from LabVIEW.
They are more difficult to program that Gigabit Ethernet because they are not a standard, and National Instruments doesn’t have a specific driver for them, but we can make calls to the specific driver of the camera.
Later, if you want to process the images, then you will be interested in NI Vision:

Please let me know if this helps you or you need more information.

  • How can I view and convert .264 files from my security cameras for use on my Mac and the web?

My security cams record in a .264 file format HD.  I want to view, edit, etc on my Mac, what software will do that and are there any easy tips to do this?  I'm new to Mac's so I'm not sure what is the best format to convert to?  mp4?  Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.  I do love the Mac so far.

I have downloaded the trail....and it won't recognize my .264 files....not sure what the deal is?  Here is a screen shot-they files are "grayed" out....and won't highlight.  Do you see anything wrong?  I'm pulling the files off of a Lorex DVR security system.  LHD200

What do i need to be able to view all 4 security cameras in the same window on my iphone 3gs? I can view 1 at a time and just tap the screen to move the lens of the security camera on my iphone from my work place. But i once had all 4 cameras but it will not downlosd all 4 now. Is there anything out there like a stronger java to push the activex to my iphone?

The iPhone does not run ActiveX. That is proprietary to MS Internet Exploder.

  • Wireless webcam / security cam for use with Intel iMac

Hi all. I want to set up an outdoor web/security cam and a wireless model would be ideal, as I want to be able to put it in different locations.
There seem to be many PC-compatible wireless cameras, but are there any which are compatible with the Mac OS? I don't really want to get into Boot Camp / Parallels territory if possible.

  • Airport Extreme + Security camera

    Hi,
Need a bit to help. I purchased a DCS-2121 D-Link home security camera with the intention to set it up and allow it to record images when triggered by its motion detection.
    Hardware:
    DCS-2121 D-Link home security camera
Airport Base Station (white dome version)
    Virgin Broadband
    20' iMac (Intel)
    After quite a struggle, I eventually got the camera to work wirelessly and was able to view the camera from most web browsers (i was quite pleased with myself). I then wanted to record the images, the camera setup gave me two options;
Record to an SD Card (slot in side of camera), or
(ii) Record to a Samba Network Drive
The easiest option, I thought, was the SD card option. After checking the boxes on the setup menu for this option and putting the sd card in the camera, I was quite disappointed that no images were stored on the sd card after a days worth of recording. Any thoughts?
I then progressed onto the second option for recording, "Samba Network Drive". This started to feel a bit out of my knowledge range but I gave it a go. The setup menu asked for a USERNAME, PASSWORD, SERVER and SHARD FOLDER. This is where I got confused! What is required to get this recording to a folder?
Ideally, could a memory stick be placed in the spare usb port in the Airport Base Station and record the images onto it? This option would negate for a computer to be left on if recording via the Samba method.
    I would appreciate anybody's advice.
    Thanks,
    Robert

SMB is basically windows file sharing. You'll need to enable this on your mac in system preferencess/sharing. See this for more info:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1812
I'm pretty sure airport disks are shared via SMB by default in "WORKGROUP" (it's been a while). Though memory sticks don't always work well with airport base stations.
    For the other information:
Username: Username of your mac user account if accessing the computer, not sure what goes here if you're sharing via airport.
Password: The appropriate account password, or the airport disk password.
Server: The computer name or airport name. I don't think SMB uses spaces, so I'm pretty sure it translates names like "Mac Mini" into "Mac-Mini"
Shared folder: The name of the folder being shared
If you've got a windows computer, this can be tested out pretty easily by going through it's network places and into Workgroup to see if everything is shared properly.

  • What changed in Firefox versions 15,16 & 17 while viewing network security cameras?

I have been viewing my network Axis security camera's over my local area network for years with Firefox. After update version 15, I can only view the image for a few seconds before I have to reload the page because the image will disappear. The camera's server stays up, but the video image is gone, and telling me to reload page. After a reload it comes back in. Sometimes it will only last 5 sec's, other times between 30 & 60 sec's. If I downgrade to version 14.0.1, it all works fine like it should again. Am I doomed to use this version now forever? Or is there a way to tweak the newer version to let me view the video image longer?
Camera's video image is in Motion JPEG format and I have the latest Java & flash installed. I also have tried Firefox with all plugins disabled and it still don't help. I have 64 bit Windows 7 for operating system.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Wireless security cam

    hi,
I am planning to install several wireless security cams at home, and the one from linksys seemed  a good choice to me.
I am looking for a specific feature that I am not able to find any explanation on. In the features I see that I am abe to watch live immages remotely, and record those live images. What I am also looking for, is that the system can automatically takes and record immages, even when I am not connected to the cam.  assumethat there is a stranger in  our house, I wantthose images t be recorded at a later stage so that I can see who has been there.
Is that possible with the linksys cam?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Koen

Yes,using the motion detection feature on the linksys camera it is possible...Some good linksys camera are WVC54GC,WVC54GCA,WVC80N.

Basically your player is telling you that you need to install the codecs that will play the compressed data within the AVI file.
AVI is a legacy file container in which the tracks of data are interleaved to maintain synchronization. This data can be encoded using many different audio and video codecs. Your problem is to determine which codecs you need for the player you are trying to use and install them if they are available. Failing that, your will either have to play the files in a different player which has the codec support your require built into the app or convert the content to a compression format that is natively compatible with the player you wish to use.
Since you have not stated what platform, operating system, and particular player you are targeting for playback, it is difficult to provide precise instructions for fixing your specific problem at this point. Suggest you try alternative players compatible with your system and platform to see if they will play the files, use a dedicated media information utility to determine the codecs needed for playback, or post a sample file for analysis.
