Using Casper 6 to clone Boot Camp drive

I've cloned my XP Boot Camp drive using Casper 6.0 to a new NTFS internal drive but am unable to boot into the newly cloned drive.
I've sent the log files from the cloning to Casper's developer and they've said everything looks correct.
Pressing the option key on startup does not display the new'y cloned drive.
Going to System Prefs>Startup does display the drive but when I select it for startup I get an error message saying something to the effect that I need to insert a bootable CD. I can boot from the Casper CD but I need to boot from the drive.
The new drive is formatted NTFS using GUID Partition Table. Just like all 4 of my internal drives (2 of which are NTFS) I have not set any jumper blocks on the cloned drive. The drives are all SATA.
Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Well I sort of fixed my problem w/booting my Casper drive. I ended up purchasing Paragon Partition Manager Pro and created a bootable clone of my XP BootCamp drive on the first attempt.

    Hi pierrot10,
I assume with the '21" iMac' you refer to the new Öate 2009 21.5" iMac, right ?
Most likely the reason for this are missing Windows drivers, due to newer hardware in the 21.5" and newer BootCamp Windows driver on the OSX DVD that came with the 21.5" iMacs.
While in Windows on the 21.5" insert the Snow Leopard OSX DVD that *came with this iMac*.
The Setup should start automatically and should give you the possibility for a 'Repair Driver'.
Cloning a Windows system from one computer to another is not that easy due to different hardware components.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Fresh install and preserve boot camp drive?

I have an older 2007 MacPro (2 dual core CPUs @ 3Ghz) that has the following...
    MacPro Internals:
    Mac HD drive = 500GB (Bay 1)
    Mac RAID drive = 500GB (Bay 2) + 500GB (Bay 3)
Windows drive = 320GB (Bay 4) - boot camp drive with Vista 64
    ATI 3870 HD Video
    BlackMagic Designs Intensity Pro
    2nd Firewire card
    External devices:
    Motu Ultralite FW Audio interface
    Mackie Control Surface
    M-Audio AXIOM 25 MIDI keyboard
    LG Blu-Ray eSATA Burner
    30" Mac HD monitor
    24" Dell Monitor
    42" HD TV
    15" SD TV
    Oki C5800L color laser printer
    Software on my MacPro:
    iWorks and iLife 09
    Final Cut Studio 3
    Logic Pro 9
    Adobe CS4 Extended
    FX Factory
    Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD
    QuickTime Pro (purchased version)
I'd like to do a clean install of SL. The reason I want to do a fresh install is that when I went from Tiger to Leopard (2007 MacPro) vs. Leopard pre-installed new (on my 2008 iMac), there are indeed some difference -- specifically different Leopard driver support that appeared on a fresh install iMac, but not when "upgrading" on my MacPro (printer drivers for example).
My hunch is that SL will detect existing drivers and NOT upgrade them to the SL version -- which may or may not be a good thing especially if the SL version drivers are 64bit while my L version drivers are 32bit. So the end result with going the "upgrade" route will be a mixed bag of 32bit and 64bit drivers. I'm pretty sure this is NOT gonna be a good situation if I ran the "upgrade" rather than a fresh install.
However, it's CRITICAL that I not lose my Windows Drive (Boot camp) with Vista 64 on it. This is a separate physical drive (Bay 4) but if I do a fresh install of SL, will the installer recognize I have a Boot camp drive and will it still allow dual boot using option key at startup (showing my the Mac or Windows drive to boot to)?
    Rob.

    Hi Rob,
Sorry been out of the country
Yes you are correct the EFI Looks after the booting of OS's from any hard drive.
if you hold down the alt key while booting it will give you a list of drives it thinks it can boot from.
In theory any windows volume with XP SP2 or newer should boot (+though if not installed on the same hardware originally is will complain about divers & if more than 15% of the hardware has change windows sometimes needs to be reactivated+)
I run multiple systems at my office using the same multi hard drive setup you have and have never had any problems changing / updating the Mac HD while leaving the Windows HD fully intact.

  • Apple ships wrong boot camp driver for MBA iSight?

Apparently, the built-in iSight camera of MBA is a new version, and it is not covered by the boot camp driver supplied in the MBA dvds (at least not when using VMWare Fusion to run Win XP).
You can alter the iSight.inf file to fool WIndows into accepting the drivers. But at the end, the installation won't complete (probably because of incorrect files). Nonetheless, a generic camera will be installed, and you can still use (barely) the iSight in Windows.
    See below for details.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=463912

You deleted OS X. Now, you have to reinstall it. If your Mac came with DVDs, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD and hold the C key while your computer is starting, and go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility.
    2. Select the hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and install OS X. After installing OS X, you must install Windows again on your computer.
If your Mac didn't come with DVDs, press Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting.

I keep getting Error code 1603 whenever I try to install the boot camp driver update under Windows Vista, it says something about a restart pending in the event log but I've restarted twice and it hasn't changed a thing, is there any way to fix this?

right click on my computer, go to manage, then to device manager.
Under display adapters, remove everything, may ask to reboot, try rebooting or just run installer again.
This fixed it for me, i tried so many things before i found this fix.

  • Where do I find the boot camp driver for my MacBookPro3,1

I have an older model intel macbook. The model identifier is MacBookPro3,1. Can anyone provide me with a link to download the correct boot camp assistant and drivers? I don't have the old installation cds that it normally comes with. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, I'm also doing the same thing on an intel MacPro. It isn't the latest model but the model just before that.

Apple makes it so you need OS X DVD to get Boot Camp 3.0 first before you can install or download updates.
Call and request replacement DVD, or just buy SL 10.6.x DVD $29.
That would be newer and your OEM didn't come with 10.6.
I assume you have the original discs for 2009 Mac Pro.
Any 10.6 DVD will provide Boot Camp driver for any Mac.

  • Advice using Casper to clone BC drive

WinClone is working fine for me but I'd love to find some additional way to clone my BC drive onto an internal hard drive and be able to swap them out if needed.
Note: I'm running XP on a hard drive which is totally independent of my OSX internal drive and I've 4 hard drives, 2 for OSX (1 is an OSX backup clone) and 2 for XP (1 is also an XP backup clone).
I have cloned my existing BC drive to another internal. Both drives are NTFS w/ GUID. My problem is that my Casper clone drive isn't being recognized when I boot to my OS selection screen. I sent the makers of Casper my log files from when I performed the clone and they say that all of my setting for cloning are correct. I don't want to bug them too much since I know BC is beyond their expertise.
Does anyone w/ experience w/ Casper (or just experience) have any ideas on what's going on. When I look at my Casper drive it has all my XP files on it, it just won't be recognized.

No, at one time it looked like, when Acronis, Ghost etc were not, that Casper 6 would, and the only such commercial program. Plus there were one or two positives.
Having one person say it did not work for them, well if I look at threads under "OS X Snow Leopard" and news sites I'd guess 5% or 10,000 people found 10.6.6 or 10.6 to "fail" or not work or live up to expectations and had trouble.
I use Paragon to clone Windows and it is as easy as... SuperDuper or CCC.
CopyCatX was also mentioned at capable of full drive - Mac OS and Windows, but maybe that uses sector copy?? not familiar with it.
Paragon is not cheap but then Casper and CopyCatX are also in the $50-59 market range. And they do support a replacement for installing Windows instead of Boot Camp Assistant; resizing partitions (WinPE or linux CD) and enough features that I have it installed on all my computers now.
As always I like to use Wikipedia to start my research.

  • How to clone Boot Camp partition when Winclone does not work

The hard drive in my MacBook Pro is failing. It has 2 partions, one for Apple and the other is a Bootcamp with Windows 7.
I tried repairing it with Disk Utility, which did not work. I also ran DiskWarrior, which resulted in the error message: "Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure". I was able to copy my Apple files through DiskWarrior although there were a couple of errors.
My question is how to clone my Bootcamp Partition. I tried making an image with Disk Utility but it failed. I also tried using Winclone and it failed indicating there were hard drive issues.
Is there another way to try to copy the Bootcamp partition? I can boot to Apple so running a program/app or trying UNIX commands might work.
    Thank you in advance.

Some previous forum comments I have collected regarding backup of BootCamp.
Acronis 2011 w/ plus pak, didn't work well previously
    Ghost 15 - probably not
Casper 6 works for Windows on Boot Camp only
CopyCatX is more lengthy and sector copy so takes the longest.
Paragon Hard Drive Suite 2011 because it works great and they have CampTune
Windows 7 system backup and restore - Apple's goofy HFS read-only interferes with system and file backup.
I have also used Casper, Clonezilla and Paragon but less regularly, Casper failed a few times, I stopped using it, Clonezilla worked but took forever (for me) Paragon (which I have only used twice) was the best but my sample is limited.
I have restored from DU, CCC, SuperDuper and TM, they all worked, TM was slower but not a lot, you can boot from the others, which I prefer.
Paragon HDM 2011 can do either offline or online backups, the difference is that with an offline backup, the entire partition (or disk) is unallocated. In an online backup, the backup utility is running against a partition that may be making changes to itself. When you run CCC or SD! in OS X, you're running an online backup. However, I would recommend (at least for the first backup) that you boot from the HDM recovery CD to do an offline backup. This will ensure that you have an *exact* copy of the parition/disk.
I tried the native Windows backup utility.  It worked to backup and restore my Windows partition, but I noticed a "bad" side effect.  When I would restore a Windows Backup to my HD, it would corrupt my MacOS boot partition, so I would then have to restore the Mac partition as well.
Winclone allows you to migrate your Bootcamp partition from one Mac to another Mac and make sure Windows will boot. However, if the processor (for example, Core Duo or i7) is a different type, the restored version of Windows may not be supported or be able to run on the new Mac. If you are migrating between Macs that are the same type (MacBook Air to MacBook Air, for example), you will have the greatest chance of success. You can try to restore Winclone images between different types of Macs (for example, a Mac Pro to a Mac Mini), but be aware that if Windows boots but does not reach the desktop, it is probably not an issue with Winclone, but rather the change in processor type.

  • Windows blue screen of death crash during Boot Camp driver install

I have been trying to get Windows running under Boot Camp on my 2.66 GHz Alu iMac, but without success.
Boot Camp partitions the drive and Windows XP SP2 installs properly. I boot into Windows, and then insert my Leopard install DVD to install the Apple drivers.
The driver installation gets about halfway, then the machine crashes with a blue screen of death and restarts automatically. It puts me back in Windows, with no drivers installed.
I am installing the Boot Camp drivers from the Leopard retail DVD. This machine is missing the Leopard install/restore discs that came with it, and Apple want to charge £99 for a replacement set.
Is there any way I can get the Boot Camp drivers installed, or do I need to find a friend with the exact same machine and original system discs and use those?

    Aloha Adam.
Don't know whether this is helpful, but below is a list of drivers that are installed (as of Aug 08).
Also, if you have not already, you may find FAQ helpful, as well, at URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1656
Lastly, though they're a year old, the Update 2.1 is in .exe format, so if you can get it the .exe download package onto your installed Windows OS somehow (e.g., copied onto a CD, IF Windows can read it), you might stand a chance of alternate means of installing the drivers.
If this helps, please so indicate.

  • Using Disk Utility for Boot Camp to work

I'm trying to install Windows 7, but Boot Camp gave me the old error message about having unmovable data and needed to use Disk Utility to format it as a Single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume. So I backed everything up and am ready to go, but when I open Disk Utility and select my hard drive/disk, all the options under "erase" are grayed out. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You can't format what you are using.
If you cloned your drive you would be able to boot from that; if you used another method and you don't have OS X installed on another hard drive, you have to use your DVD.
